LG eyes number two phone maker spot for 2012, premium brand in the works
Sitting pretty as the number three cell maker in the world would make many of the bigger names happy -- not to mention the usurped Sony Ericsson and Motorola a bit green -- but not LG, as it's now gunning for spot number two. MCS Music sues Microsoft, Yahoo, Real Networks

Tiny, printable batteries promise to change the face of obnoxious greeting cards forever
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS in Chemnitz led by Prof. Dr. Reinhard Baumann have unveiled tiny, printable batteries that they hope to put into production for pennies apiece. The new battery prototype is primarily composed of a zinc anode and a manganese cathode that can be screen printed and covered with a non-printed template cover. Each mercury-free battery weighs less than one gram, and can individually produce about 1.5 volts of electricity. By placing several batteries side by side, however, up to 6 volts can be generated. Asteroids heading towards the big screen?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has won an all-out "bidding war" over the film rights to Atari's classic Asteroids video game. We're not entirely sure who all was involved in this "war," but the conflict couldn't possibly be prompted over the universal themes tackled by the story of the plucky little triangular spaceship and the asteroid field it inhabits. Sony exec says UMD-less PSP was "always the plan"
Well, it's no secret that plenty of folks have been talking about a UMD-less PSP since day one, but it looks like that's been the case behind the scenes at Sony as well, at least according to the company's head of product planning, Naoya Matsui. Speaking with GameBusiness.jp, he said that Sony has "planned to release a PSP model without a UMD drive since the very beginning," but that if "we'd simply released the hardware, there wouldn't have been much for everyone to enjoy," adding that Sony "needed to prepare the right environment for it first - things like the transferal of content with the PS3 and PSN, and PC software to manage content like music and movies such as Media Go." Apple-Patente: Karaoke-iPods und Akku laden im Regal
Quer über den Globus versuchen Firmen, ihre Entwicklungen möglichst weitreichend durch Patente zu schützen - Apple macht da keine Ausnahme. Ob all diese Patentanträge dann auch bewilligt werden oder gar Anwendung finden, steht auf einem anderen Blatt.

One downside to consistant iPhone 3GS form factor: Clones.
There is plenty of upside to Apple's choice not to change the design of the iPhone3GS from the iPhone 3G. All docks and accessories work between models, you know exactly where all of the buttons are on the device and "it ain't broke", right?
Well, there is also a downside. Those knockoff-makers have lots of time to perfect your look and feel. Cult of Mac looked at popular Chinese iClones like the A88 or SciPhone i68 and found them amazingly similaron the outside.

Apple patents detail fingerprint recognition, Haptic Feedback, and RFID Tag Readers
Macrumors has been digging through Apple patents and found some very tantalizing nuggets of perhaps possible future iPhone features.
Fingerprint identification using fingerprints to identify each finger and associate actions based on each finger. This would allow the iPhone to interperet each finger action seperately, allowing for easier and more acurate control over input by the user.

Greenpeace continues to hate on Apple, apparently doesn't watch commercials
Greenpeace continues to be at odds with Apple's message that they are as green as green can be. Today's report (page 22-23) puts Apple in the lower half of the technology rung with Japanese whale killers like Nintendo and Fujitsu. Do Samsung, Nokia and Sony Ericsson have batteries that last for 5 years?

Apple patching nasty iPhone SMS vulnerability
Given the hype surrounding Apple's iPhone, we're actually surprised that we haven't seen more holes to plug over the years. Schnell reagiert: Apple behebt iDisk-Sicherheitslücke
Nur 24 Stunden hat es gedauert, bis Apple eine Sicherheitslücke in iDisk gestopft hat, berichtet Heise. Das Leck ermöglichte es, sogenannte Directory Traversals durchzuführen. Apple patent applications offer glimpses of haptic screens, RFID readers, fingerprint ID
Alright, so you know the drill by now. A patent application doesn't necessarily mean an actual product is on the way -- but it's always fun to speculate, right? And this latest trio of applications from Apple certainly provides plenty of speculation fodder. The most notable of the lot is an application for a "multi-touch display screen with localized tactile feedback," which Apple seems to be at least considering as a possibility for the iPhone (or iPod touch). Palm Pre demand has 'settled'
Sales of the Palm Pre have cooled off to where supply is keeping up with demand, JPMorgan analyst Paul Coster said in an investment note today. Nach einer aktuellen Prognose des Bitkom wird der Umsatz mit Produkten und Diensten der Informationstechnik und Telekommunikation in Deutschland 2009 um 2,5 Prozent auf 141 Milliarden Euro zurückgehen. HTC Hero hits FCC with US 3G
No mention was made of a Hero with 3G that'd work on Rogers or AT&T back at its announcement a few days ago, but HTC has been getting awfully good at making phones that work properly around these parts -- so we can't say we're entirely surprised to see a Hero approved for WCDMA on Bands II and V gracing the FCC today. For the record, Bands II and V are 1900 and 850MHz, respectively, which is exactly the combo AT&T subscribers would need to flip the switch on high-speed data. Psystar bounces back from Chapter 11, intros new high-end hardware
Everybody's favorite fuzzy little Apple clone maker is back from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection (we're still waiting on that revelatory outing of creditors that Apple is so hungry for), and already has a new product in the offering. Psystar's new Open(7) hardware runs Intel Nehalem Xeon, which should provide a nice performance jolt to hackintosh land. Now here's a way to make us show up for the previews. O2 has evidently figured out that getting moviegoers involved in the action is a good way to get more fundaments in seats, and starting next week, the first in-cinema interactive 3D game will be rolled out in 20 Vue theaters around the UK. The title, dubbed Asteroid Storm, will rely on two overhead cameras that recognize hand raises down below. Facebook ändert seine Datenschutz-Einstellungen
Facebook will seine Privatsphäre-Einstellungen aufräumen. Das hat das Unternehmen bei einer Web-Konferenz am Mittwoch bekannt gegeben. Mit Umstellungsassistenten, so genannten "Transition Tools", wolle man die Kundenkonten auf das neue System aktualisieren. iPhone 3GS Is Indeed Seeing Red
Gavor from FrenchiPhone could confirm earlier report of white iPhone 3GS turning "red" after having been used intensively. It does not seem that the device was overheating, as we have experienced iPhone 3G enclosure getting hotter when intensively used. Apple did not really officially communicate about this issue, but it should come in a near future as similar reports have already been posted. So it is either a production batch problem, then it will be fixed soon, or some components included in the white enclosure are turning red upon heavy thermal exposure (something not reported with the white iPhone 3G) and this is a more time-consuming issue.

Macrumors has been digging through Apple patents and found some very tantalizing nuggets of perhaps possible future iPhone features.

NVIDIA Preps GeForce 9400M Successor
As you know Apple uses NVIDIA GeForce 9400M chipset since October 2008 in MacBook and iMac. This chips did not evolve as NVIDIA has left Intel graphical chipsets in the dust. However, as one should not expect that Intel will not react, NVIDIA is preparing the successor of its Atom-dedicated GeForce 9400M (known as ION platform). Improvements should be significant as the new version should have have much faster graphics and much more shaders (at least twice more than the GF9400M). In addition the power consumption should not change as thinner engraving should help to control it.
This evolution should be available by the end of the year. Unfortunately for NVIDIA, at the same time period, Apple should have adopted the new Intel mobile architecture based on Nehalem, an entirely different hardware in which Intel did not let any third party to be involved.

While AMD is struggling to catch up, results of 32 nm engraving production tests are so positive that Intel might switch to this new process 3 months ahead of schedule. SAP-Anwender erneuern Forderung nach optionalem Support-Modell
Die deutschsprachige SAP-Anwendergruppe (DSAG) hat gemeinsam mit elf Branchenverbänden der Wirtschaft ihre Forderung nach Nachbesserungen bei den Verträgen von SAP mit deutschen und österreichischen Kunden erneuert, da aus ihrer Sicht das Thema "optionales Support-Modell" im Zusammenhang mit dem SAP Enterprise Support nach wie vor nicht befriedigend gelöst ist. Urheberrechtsklage gegen Microsoft, Yahoo und Real eingereicht
Der britisch-amerikanische Musikverlag Music Copyright Solutions (MCS) hat zusammen mit weiteren Rechteinhabern eine Urheberrechtsklage gegen Microsoft, Yahoo und Real Networks eingereicht. Apple und die Zukunft der Nvidia-Chips
Im vergangenen Oktober stellte Apple neue Notebooks vor, die sich nicht nur von außen, sondern auch innen deutlich sichtbar von den Vorgängermodellen unterschieden. So kam zum Beispiel Nvidias neuer Chipsatz zum Einsatz, nachdem Apple zuvor auf Lösungen von Intel gesetzt hatte. T3 Motion goes third wheelin' with its CT3 personal commuter EV
Don't get too excited, the above picture's only a render, but T3 Motion -- the company that brought you the security-focused electric stand-up vehicle -- is planning to bring this whip to life as the CT3 personal commuter / EV. As Autoblog points out, the lack of a fourth wheel should help this get classified as a motorcycle, meaning it won't be relegated to zipping around the neighborhood but still will be kept to a 45MPH top speed. iTouch: zögerlicher Umstieg auf 0S 3.0
Nach AdMob-Zahlen hatten am 20. Juni - also drei Tage nach Verfügbarkeit - bereits 44 Prozent der iPhone-Anwender zu OS 3.0 gewechselt. Sony bringt neue iPod-Soundsysteme
Sony bringt diesen Sommer zwei neue iPod-Soundsysteme mit CD-Player und integriertem Radio auf den europäischen Markt:
Das oben links abgebildete CMT-Z100iR (erste Bilder davon gab es bereits im März) kommt wahlweise in weißem oder schwarzem Hochglanzgehäuse und wird über ein Frontdisplay mit Sensortasten bedient - den Polierlappen legt man also besser gleich daneben. Das Gerät soll noch im Juli zum Preis von 349 Euro inklusive Wandhalterung erhältlich sein.
Mit dem NAS-Z200iR (rechts) kann zusätzlich Internetradio empfangen werden und über Wi-Fi auf das Musikarchiv des heimischen PC zugegriffen werden - die iTunes-Mediathek wird in der Sony-Pressemitteilung allerdings nicht erwähnt und bleibt offensichtlich außen vor.

DIY HD projector hits the right note, sub-€500 price range
It's really hard to say how much of a value this DIY HD projector is, given we're missing some crucial specs like resolution (gotta be at least 720p, right?), contrast ratio, and luminosity. Still, at €500 (about $708 US) for the whole kit, it's not a bad deal if you planned on spending your weekend doing projects anyway. All the pieces come in four separate bundles -- HD optic, light, housing, and electronics -- and if you need some handholding (it's okay, so do we), there's a German-language instruction manual that's thankfully full of pictures and diagrams, and even more entertaining, we've got a video / picture slideshow of the process done to a playful techno ditty. Das iPhone ist bereits jetzt Heimat vieler Anwendungen aus dem medizinischen Bereich, wie etwa dieser und dieser. Ganz ernsthaft gehörten aber echte Anwendungen, die für Ärzte gedacht sind, mit zu den ersten Applikationen, die für das iPhone vorgestellt wurden und durch die Ansteuerung externer Hardware über den Dock Connector dürften die Anwendungsgebiete noch erweitert werden.

Taiwan orders Dell to honor $15 monitor mishap
It's not exactly all that uncommon for Dell to misprice an item on its website and, if you're lucky, it might even honor it. But it looks like the stakes have just been raised considerably in Taiwan, where the company recently listed a 19-inch monitor for NT$500 (or about $15US) and promptly received more than 26,000 orders for close to 140,000 of the monitors. Now, ordinarily, Dell would simply send out a polite email explaining their mistake and call it a day, but Taiwanese regulators have now stepped in and ordered Dell to honor the misprice after receiving a couple of hundred complaints. Hulu still silent on PS3, Windows Mobile blocking - but there's a free solution
