MSI's X-Slim to get Pentiums to fight MacBook Air
MSI is planning on making a version of its 13.4-inch X-Slim notebook available with a faster Pentium chip than the current 1.33GHz Intel Atom CPU. The current X320 lightweight, sub-3lb laptop is meant to compete with the MacBook Air, and the faster chips would extend the range to make it more competitive with the Air, which is offered with Intel's 1.6GHz and 1.86GHz Core 2 Duo CPUs.

Apple sets date for Q1 2009 financial results call
Apple has announced the date for its next financial conference call, which will discuss the results of the company's first fiscal quarter of 2009. The call is currently scheduled for Wednesday, January 21st at 2PM Pacific, or 5PM Eastern time. Those not participating directly in the call will have to listen via a QuickTime webcast.

T-Mobile getting HTC Rhodium as the Wing II, Sapphire as the G2?
T-Mobile USA has a pretty solid relationship with HTC, considering it sells the Shadow, the Wing, and the G1 at the moment -- and seeing how the G1's doing a nice little spot of business for them, it stand to reason that they'd be looking to continue the good times through '09. iPhone nano still enroute, but not for US?
Apple could be making its rumored iPhone nano primarily for non-US markets, checks by analyst Brian Marshal of AmTech. Noble Security intro MacBook Air, iMac locks
Noble Security says it has begun selling two new locks for Apple computers. The first is for the MacBook Air, which Noble notes lacks a traditional Kensington lock slot. The Noble lock is in fact claimed to be the only one available for the Air, and attempts to match the thin size of the computer.

Samsung Q1EX tablet shows itself, gets detailed
This unassuming little tablet somehow managed to slip under our radar at CES, but the folks at UMPC Portal did thankfully manage to snap a few pics of it, and dig up a few details. Dubbed the Q1EX, this followup / compliment to Samsung's Q1 series of UMPCs ditches the usual QWERTY keypad in favor of a full-on 7-inch touchscreen, and gets backed up by a VIA Nano processor, along with built-in Bluetooth, GPS, and WiMAX, among other standard tablet PC features. Unfortunately, there's no word on a price or release date just yet, but if Samsung's past track record with the Q1 is any indication, you can expect to see a whole slew of different incarnations before all is said and done.

Olidata Conte ultraportable makes its shiny debut
It doesn't look like this one was actually on display at CES, but Italy's Olidata does seem to have taken the opportunity to announce its shiny new Conte ultraportable, which takes square aim at the growing ranks of 13.3-inch ultra-thin laptops out there. Big set back for Rambus
Rambus, the company that has made a speciality of haunting the courts to put forward claims for millions of dollars for patent infringements has just had a big disappointment. They had their lawsuit dismissed against Micron. The judge having noted that Rambus destroyed important documents which could have used to their discredit. More seriously, the judge considered that the patents of the company are quite simply not applicable in this context.
If Rambus hopes to appeal this decision, they are already on a back foot. Their stock has already been ravaged by the crisis, like all the others has fallen 40%, the investors preferring to flee a company whose ground is beginning to break down.

Palm may sell 1.5m Pre phones in 1st year

So, there's good news and bad news. Windows 7 may ship as early as July

Screen shots of Palm's Mojo SDK already in the wild?
We don't have a failsafe way to confirm that these are real, but what we're seeing certainly jibes with what Palm's been saying about webOS and its Mojo SDK: all web, all the time. Apps, which rely heavily on HTML and Javascript, are actually debugged right from the comfort of your desktop web browser, so it seems like there isn't even a native emulator to worry about. OLED displays were out in full force this year, with Samsung bringing plenty of its own to showcase to CES onlookers. We already had a chance to check out a snazzy folding OLED late last week, but CNET was able to capture a few more for good measure. Whoa, Sharp -- wait just a minute. Did you really just introduce a pair of music systems that get down with slotMusic players? Google widerspricht Umweltstudie zur Internetsuche

Asus's Eee PC 1000HE pulls the shift key in from right field
Eee's 1000H is generally held to be one of the more complete netbook packages out there, but the placement of the right shift key to the starboard side of the up arrow drives many a touch-typist bonkers. Welcome, then, to the 1000HE, or "extended." Studie: Mobilfunk schadet Kindern und Jugendlichen nicht
Eine aktuell Untersuchung der Münchner Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) im Auftrag des Bundesamts für Strahlenschutz (BfS) hat unter 3000 Heranwachsenden keinen Einfluss von Mobilfunkstrahlung auf das Wohlbefinden von Kindern und Jugendlichen feststellen können. "Wir wissen aber weiterhin nicht, welche Langzeitwirkungen elektromagnetische Felder des Mobilfunks auf Kinder und Jugendliche haben", teilte das BfS mit. Aus Vorsorgegründen empfiehlt die Behörde insbesondere bei Kindern weiterhin einen vorsichtigen Umgang mit drahtlosen Kommunikationstechniken.

Apple spending $500 Million on LG Displays for the next 5 years
The AP today revealed that Apple and LG have come to a big agreement over the next five years for display technology. The agreement spells out that the displays won't just be for monitors but also for iPhones and iPods. Rambus scheitert mit Patentklage gegen Micron

Good news, Windows 7 fanatics -- Microsoft has decided to nix that 2.5 million download limit in order to a) calm everyone down and b) enable its servers to relax just a wee bit. After the Windows 7 Beta download was launched, it took just hours to bring the servers to a screeching halt as consumers 'round the globe attempted to get in before the 2.5 million mark was hit. Here at Engadget, we don't spend an awful lot of time dabbling in operating systems, but when Phoenix Technologies offered us the chance to check out its HyperSpace instant-on OS, we just couldn't resist. Microsoft a major investor in touchscreen firm
Israeli touchscreen maker N-Trig today revealed that it has received a total of $24 million in funding from a group of investors led by Microsoft. The American developer is the largest contributor and says its undisclosed amount is there to encourage the use of multi-touch technology with Windows 7, which is the first desktop Windows platform to be built with touchscreens in mind.

Windows 7 beta: brings the MicroSoft servers to its knees
Friday, Microsoft launched beta public of Windows 7, the successor of Vista, allowing the first 2.500.000 people (update: this limit has since been made infinite) who would be interested to download it. However life took a turn for the worse. Faced with this load, the servers quickly fell making any remote loading impossible. Microsoft preferred to closed down everything and endeavoured to place at the disposal more infrastructure in order to answer the demand.
It should be said that this beta weighs 2,4 GB, multiplied by 2,5 million, one arrives at 6 PetaOctets and this is simply colossal.
After the mitigated success of Vista, this breakdown (which should have been foreseeable!!) restates the form of success of the company, that has suffered from image problems lately.

New MacBook Pro 17" Battery: Apple Released a TechNote
In order to prevent any issues or complains from potential customers, Apple already released a TechNote related to the famous non replaceable battery powering the new MacBook Pro 17". As we already announced it after the keynote, the battery can be changed in any APR for 179 Euro, and a one-year warranty will be granted too (depending on the local laws). One will have to wait for couple of months to evaluate if the battery lifetime really evolves according to Apples claims.

Die nächste Version des Linux-Kernels wird zwei neue Dateisysteme mitliefern. Btrfs und Squashfs wurden in den Entwicklungszweig, der zu Linux 2.6.29 führt, integriert. Vor jedem Apple-Event überschlagen sich die Gerüchteseiten mit Prognosen zu neuen Produkten. Im Nachhinein ist es immer interessant, einen Blick auf die Berichte zu werfen und zu beurteilen, welche Seiten richtig lagen und wo Fehleinschätzungen getroffen wurden. Wired und TUAW hatten beide von einem neuen iMac zur MWSF gesprochen, bekanntlich veröffentlichte Apple aber kein neues Gerät und wird dies wohl erst in den nächsten Wochen tun.

Vertrag mit Apple: LG liefert weitere fünf Jahre Displays
Der südkoreanische Hersteller LG wird mindestens die nächsten fünf Jahre lang Displays an Apple liefern, wie das Unternehmen nun bekannt gibt. Siemens-Aktionäre lehnen geplante Aufsichtsratsbezüge ab
Wie der Spiegel berichtet, steht der Führung des Siemens-Konzerns auf der kommenden Hauptversammlung am 27. Januar eine Auseinandersetzung mit den Belegschaftsaktionären ins Haus. Diese wollen die geplante Anhebung der Aufsichtsratsgehälter ablehnen. Die Forderungen, die eine Erhöhung ihrer Bezüge um 100 Prozent vorsehen, seien unverhältnismäßig. Ab 2010 wollen die Aktionärsvertreter über die Vorstandsbezüge entscheiden und ein Ausufern von Managergehältern verhindern.

Apple categorically announced that they will not take part in 2010 Macworld at San Francisco whose dates are fixed to be January 4-8.

Fünfjährige Zusammenarbeit zwischen Apple und LG Display vereinbart
Heute wurde bekannt, dass Apple und LG Display eine Vereinbarung über längerfristige Zusammenarbeit geschlossen haben. LG versorgt Apple demnach mit Displays für Computer, Musikplayer und Smart Phones, wie es in der Pressemitteilung heißt. Der Vertrag läuft über fünf Jahre, die erste Zahlung in Höhe von 500 Millionen Dollar wird noch für diesen Monat erwartet. Noch nicht bekannt wurde hingegen, wie hoch die vereinbarten Stückzahlen sind.

Bioshock soll für den Mac erscheinen
Wie Macworld berichtet, hat Feral Interactive am Freitag auf der Macworld Expo bestätigt, dass man den First-Person-Shooter Bioshock auf den Mac portieren wird. Diese Frage kam auf, nachdem Mitarbeiter des Feral Messestand mit T-Shirts der bekannten Big-Daddy-Figur des Spiels herumliefen. Intel plant angeblich CPU für günstige Subnotebooks

MacWorld Expo 09: post-mortem
So,
the 2009 edition of MacWorld Expo San Francisco is over. What's left of it, apart from a lingering pain in my feet?
In spite of a keynote that many have qualified as "dull", the Expo itself didn't seem that different from the previous 2 years, in terms of visitors (although we'll have to wait for the "official" numbers) and atmosphere. You can say that there was a lack of a certain excitment in the air, like you have after every keynote given by Steve Jobs and his famous "one more thing".
Regarding the content, it's interesting to note that, after the recent years of iPod/iPhone mania, the situation is normalising itself: MWSF09 was resolutely oriented towards the Mac, on the Apple booth as well as on the 3rd party booths. Indeed, if last year's edition was still stuffed with iThings, including luxury cars "made for iPod" complete with short-skirted bimbos, this year the iPod accessories are still there but not dominant anymore.

Wii Balance Board am Mac nutzen
Einsam zuckelt ein Milchwagen über die Erdkugel. Ob New York, Tokyo oder Bremen - der Fahrer findet keine Abnehmer für seine Milch, kein Mensch zeigt sich auf den Straßen. We just can't get enough of these Grippity back-typing keyboards, and Jacob Eichbaum dropped by the Engadget trailer one last time to show us his super-early mockup of a Grippity back-typing gaming controller, along with the original prototype that started all this insanity. LG Renoir hands-on
Though it has been out for some time, we'd not had the chance to really check out LG's Renoir properly -- even though Engadget Spanish has had a chance. Of course, LG's massive booth featured an area dedicated to this 8 megapixel effort that we had to almost fight through to get at this phone. Motorola laying off throngs, focusing on Android alone for smartphones
Phone Scoop is reporting that doomsday is imminent for Motorola, possibly as soon as this week. Toshiba's DMFC "internet viewer" prototypes are truly next-gen
It's not every day you walk past something quite as striking as Toshiba's new DMFC internet viewer prototypes. Sure, folks like Toshiba and Samsung have been chatting up DMFC (Direct Methanol Fuel Cell) power technology for ages, but to see it live and in person -- and powering a truly unique form factor -- is quite a treat. Word is these things can last for a week of typical use on one methanol refill, and are running regular old Windows XP. Unfortunately, there's no word on what processing and storage is under the hood or when these will hit the market, or for how much. Basically, Windows 7 is much more likely the OS we'll be seeing on them by the time they're ready to go -- if that ever happens at all, DMFC doesn't have the best track record of actually breaking through the productization stage. It's really impossible to convey how sharp and choice this thing looks and feels in person, but we did our best.
