Comcast testing free Wi-Fi access for subscribers
Internet provider Comcast is performing Wi-Fi hot spot trials near NJ Transit rail stations in the state to grant subscribers access to the Internet on their mobile devices, according to a Friday DSLReports post. Apple working to fix iTunes Plus upgrade problems
A number of customers attempting to upgrade existing iTunes albums to the new DRM-free Plus format have reportedly run into problems, according to Macworld. Research team "near production" of a cheap lightbulb, lasts up to 60 years
We've seen plenty of high-efficiency lightbulbs rolling around, but this new one -- if it ever sees the light of day (groan) -- has impressive potential. Checkout 2.3.2 adds minor features, fixes bugs
A v2.3.2 update is now available for Checkout, Werck's Mac-only point-of-sale software. The app handles a variety of cashier tasks, such as sales, receipts and invoices. The software can also be used to manage inventory stocks however, and generate reports on several forms of connected information.

Nikon D700 gets tweaked to shoot video via live-view
Some Canon die-hards have already managed to coax their DSLRs to record video via live-view, and it looks like Nikon aficionados are now able to do the same, albeit not quite as easily just yet. That's because the mod requires both access to Nikon's SDK for the D700 and the necessary skills to actually do something with it, in this case capturing video from the live-view feed via USB. The good news is that the modder responsible for the hack, Olivier Giroux, is planning to "productize" the software and make it publicly available, but until then, you'll have to make do with the sample video after the break which, while not quite 480p, still looks pretty dece

GPS maker Garmin has recently introduced the FR60 fitness watch that can connect wirelessly to compatible ANT+ fitness sensors such as heart rate monitors and foot pods. Sure, Clearwire is still busily rolling out its mobile WiMAX network across the US, but the fledgling wireless standard isn't having the best time of it lately -- Nokia just discontinued the N810 WiMAX Edition, which was easily the highest-profile WiMAX product on the market, and now Nortel is closing down its entire mobile WiMAX division. T-Mobile dude promises more 'G series' phones this year
In an interview with FierceWireless, T-Mobile USA's senior VP of engineering and operations (and newly-minted chairman of 3G Americas' board) Neville Ray has slipped a couple juicy morsels in the process of talking up his carrier's ongoing 3G rollout. NTT DoCoMo announces farewell to mova and DoPa 2G services

With LTE just over the horizon, NTT DoCoMo is proactively announcing the phase out of its mova and DoPa 2G services. The 2G mova services encompass car phone and Pre-Call prepaid -- which got their roots in March of 1993 -- while the 2G DoPa packet communication service sprouted up four years after that. Einem Bericht zufolge stehen bei Intel im zweiten Quartal Preissenkungen einiger Mobilprozessoren an. So sinkt der Preis des T9600, ein mobiler Core 2 Duo mit 2,8 GHz um immerhin 40 Prozent auf 309 Euro pro CPU bei der Abnahme von 1000 Exemplaren. Druckerhersteller TallyGenicom flüchtet in Chapter 11
TallyGenicom hat freiwillig einen Antrag auf Gläubigerschutz nach Chapter 11 des United States Bankrupcy Code gestellt. Ex-Freenet-Chef wegen Insiderhandels verurteilt
Die Wirtschaftsstrafkammer des Landgerichts Hamburg hat den ehemaligen Freenet-Chef Eckhard Spoerr und Finanzvorstand Axel Krieger wegen Insiderhandels zu Geldstrafen verurteilt. WSJ: Dell plant Einstieg in den Smartphone-Markt
Alle wollen dem iPhone an den Kragen, doch das Original übertrifft bisher nicht wirklich ein Modell der Konkurrenz. Unterdessen arbeitet Apple eventuell schon an einer Neuauflage, die andere Geräte auf Abstand halten könnte. Patentierte Technologien sorgen außerdem dafür, dass nicht wahllos Klone in die Welt gesetzt werden. NASA investigates problems with Mars Spirit rover
They've manged to make it to the five-year mark despite a few considerable bumps in the road, but it looks like one of the Mars rovers has once again hit a snag, and NASA is now furiously trying to sort out the problem. Apple zieht Update für NVIDIA-Grafikkarten zurück
Erst vor wenigen Tagen veröffentlichte Apple einen neuen Treiber für seine in Macs eingesetzten Grafikeinheiten von NVIDIA. Das "Graphics Update" sollte die Zusammenarbeit und insbesondere Cursorbewegungen auf externen Displays verbessern, falls diese an ein MacBook über den Mini-DisplayPort-auf-Dual-Link-DVI-Adapter angeschlossen sind.

iPhone 3G ab kommender Woche bei T-Mobile günstiger
Wie Heise Online meldet, wird T-Mobile ab Montag, dem 2. Februar, die Einstiegspreise für das iPhone senken. Bisher waren im günstigen Tarif bis zu 249,95 Euro für das iPhone zu zahlen. Ab Montag sollen maximal 129,95 Euro für ein iPhone 3G anfallen. In den höherpreisigen Tarifen soll das iPhone 3G mit 8 GB für einen symbolischen Euro erhältlich sein. Auch im Prepaid-Tarif Xtra soll der Preis für das iPhone 3G von bisher 569,95 auf 499,9

Und wieder droht Apple eine neue Klage. Dieses Mal fühlt sich ein iPhone-Kunde von der Marketing-Abteilung hinters Licht geführt, da die versprochene Netzgeschwindigkeit nicht zutreffe. Intel: Erster Prozessor mit acht Kernen
Während Dual-Core-CPUs heutzutage schon Standard sind und von Woche zu Woche mehr Quad-Core-Prozessoren verkauft werden, ist es nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis CPUs mit acht Kernen an den Mann gebracht werden. Der Core i7 von Intel macht dabei schon einmal den Anfang, auch wenn dieser eigentlich nur vier Kerne hat, dafür aber acht Threads zeitgleich bearbeiten kann.

Media Markt "verschleudert" MacBooks
macbug will in einem aktuellen Newsletter der Handelskette Media Markt entdeckt haben, dass diese MacBooks und MacBooks Pro zu "Kampfpreisen" auf den Markt schmeißen. So sollen die bei Aluminium-MacBook-Modelle zu Preisen von 1119 respektive 1379 Euro angeboten werden. Im Apple Store liegen die Preise bei 1199 beziehungsweise 1499 Euro. Die beiden 15"-MacBook-Pro-Modelle sind mit Preisen von 1649 Euro (2.4 GHz) und 2069 Euro (2.53 GHz) ebenfalls günstiger als im Apple Store (1.799 und 2.249 Euro). Auf der Mediamarkt-Seite sind allerdings derzeit keine Preise für portable Macs zu finden.

Zumba Phone: the Steorn Orbo of cellphones?
Ready for this? The BBC is reporting on a "top-secret phone" developed by a 40-person strong ejector-seat technology company -- IA Technology -- from Hereford England. The Beeb calls it, "the world's first fully accurate voice recognition system for mobile phones." A bold claim (to say the least) from seemingly nowhere. TCG legt Standard für Festplattenverschlüsselung vor
Die Trusted Computing Group (TCG) hat Spezifikationen für die sogenannte "Full Disk Encryption" veröffentlicht. Erneut Verzögerungen bei der Entwicklung von Firefox 3.1
Innerhalb eines Monats erfolgte von Mozilla nun schon die zweite Bekanntgabe über die zeitliche Verzögerung der Entwicklung von Firefox 3.1. Eigentlich wollte Mozilla die dritte Beta noch im Januar freigeben, Mitte Januar zeigte sich jedoch schon, dass dieser Plan nicht eingehalten werden konnte. Nun stellten sich die vorhandenen Fehler als noch schwerwiegender heraus, verantwortlich dafür ist in erster Linie die neue JavaScript-Engine.

People they've chatted with (as well as the Wall Street Journal) say Dell has two models coming our way. One running Android a la the G1. The other running Windows Mobile. Samsung's 4Gb chip promises 32GB DDR3 memory modules for PCs and laptops
Oh Samsung, you and your world's firsts. We like to tease but your latest breakthrough is truly notable: the world's first 4Gb (bit, not Byte) DDR3 DRAM PC memory chip based on relatively frugal 50-nm processes. Grafikchips verkaufen sich schlecht

Amazon meldet Umsatzsteigerung im vierten Quartal
Amazon hat seinen Umsatz im vierten Quartal trotz der schwierigen wirtschaftlichen Lage im Vergleich zum selben Vierteljahr des Vorjahres um 18 Prozent auf 6,7 Milliarden Dollar erhöht. Der Gewinn des Unternehmens stieg um 9 Prozent auf 225 Millionen Dollar oder 0,52 Dollar pro Aktie. Damit übertraf der Online-Händler auch die Prognosen der Analysten, die den Umsatz auf 6,4 Milliarden Dollar und den Gewinn auf 0,50 Dollar pro Aktie geschätzt hatten.

Now that the proverbial cat is out of the bag on Western Digital's 2TB Caviar Green HDD, hardware fanatics have had a chance to take the 3.5-inch drive for a spin. While its performance leaves something to be desired -- transferring files took longer than the 1TB Caviar Black or 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda -- instead we've got low heat and noise. Markt für Grafikkarten bricht im vierten Quartal ein
Nach einem überdurchschnittlichen Wachstum im dritten Quartal 2008 hat die Wirtschaftskrise zwischen Oktober und Dezember auch den Markt für Grafikkarten erreicht. Laut einer Studie von Jon Peddie Research haben AMD, Intel und Nvidia in diesem Zeitraum 111,26 Millionen Grafikkarten verkauft, 34 Prozent weniger als im dritten Quartal. Dell readying the iPhone competitor : 'MePhone'
Prepare to avert your eyes. Dell is planning on entering the Smartphone space with a little gem they might call the MePhone, according to SAI. According to people they've chatted with (as well as the Wall Street Journal) Dell has two models coming our way. One running Android a la the G1. The other running Windows Mobile.
The move isn't surprising as mobile phones are rapidly catching up with computers as the preferred way people access the Internet. Dell, coming off a pretty bad quarter has to be gazing over at Apple's earnings sheet with a bit of envy. Dell's been rumored to be working on a mobile phone since the iPhone was announced.

Is iDVD EOL'd?
As far as we can tell, Apple hasn't done a thing to iDVD '09 to differentiate it from iDVD '08. Not even a few fresh templates. In fact, they left the 'iDVD' off of the side of the box, like it didn't exist anymore. Is it EOL'd?
We know Apple doesn't care much for the bag o' hurt that is Blu Ray disks. In fact, a DVD player doesn't even grace the AppleTV or MacBook Air. Optical is definitely on the decline in Cupertino.
As a side note, Apple had also removed iTunes from the iLife package as of iLife '08.

New iPhone on the way (Updated)
Update: Pinchmedia has some more info
MacRumors happened upon some code in the new SDK which seems to reveal that a new iPhone is coming in June. While this news isn't really unexpected, it is the first signs we are seeing that the iPhones are going to be upgraded (what? you thought Apple was going to discontinue them?).
On a separate note, they also got a screengrab from a web hits vendor which shows that someone with one of these new iPhones has been browsing the web - or that someone has been spoofing for fun and profit. No word yet on whether this person was looking for weight gaining supplements.

Intel to introduce eight-core Xeon processor for early 2009
Macworld reports that Intel is set to reveal its first eight-core processor at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference in San Francisco next month. The ISSCC program reveals that Intel will discuss an "eight-core, 16-thread Xeon processor manufactured with a 45-nanometer process".

Apple takes down NVIDIA Update what is to blame?
Apple today took down last week's NVIDIA firmware update for MacBook/Pro/Air. The update didn't fix the issues with the Dual Link DVI adapter on 30 inch displays, and furthermore, we've received word that some users with 15-inch Unibody MacBook Pros have reported speaker popping since installing the update. Kodak's reported a 24 percent sales drop and announced it's cutting up to 4,500 workers this year, while Toshiba posted its first loss in seven years, and announced cuts that would bring their expenditures down 80 percent from the current year. Finally, although this was previously predicted, Sony's announced that its profits were down a staggering 95 percent last quarter -- its first-ever third quarter loss posting. Samsung seems pretty proud of world's highest density DRAM chip
Those of you who actually keep track of which outfits are on top of others in terms of density (yeah, all 8.4 of you) have a new winner to document, as Samsung has just announced the development of the planet's highest density DRAM chip. By utilizing 50 nanometer technology, Sammy has concocted a four gigabit DDR3 DRAM chip, and if it has its druthers, the low-power device will be used in data centers and servers the world over. The module can be produced in 16GB registered dual in-line memory modules (RDIMM) for servers, as well as 8GB unbuffered DIMM (UDIMM) for workstations and desktop PCs, and 8GB small outline DIMM (SODIMM) for laptops. Hey Sony, where's the 1.86GHz VAIO P for America?
We already asked this question with "1.6GHz" in place of "1.86GHz," but seriously Sony, is there some sort of weird embargo on high-speed chips to America that we aren't aware of? While we Yanks have exactly one CPU option for the newly released VAIO P (that'd be the 1.3GHz Atom), those in Japan can order up the VGN-P90S with a 1.86GHz Atom Z540 processor. Of course, it's a ¥15,800 ($174) option over the baseline Z520, but an option nonetheless.[Thanks, Erica]Read - Sony
