28Mbps HSPA+ rolling out in Italy, Germany
Ericsson on Wednesday announced it will partner with wireless provider Telecom Italia to bring wireless data speeds as fast as 28Mbps when downloading and 5.8Mbps when uploading thanks to HSPA+ technology. Changewave throws up some hopeful Apple numbers.
It's not a pretty picture around the technology sector. But there are some bright spots in Changewave's latest survey. Although Apple's desktops are down significantly (we just heard our first tip of an desktop hardware update - more on that later), MacBook sales remain strong.
Within the shrinking overall PC spending environment, Apple (AAPL) planned laptop purchases (30%) for the next 90 days have improved 3-pts since our previous survey in January. But at the same time, planned desktop purchases (26%) have dipped 2-pts.
and Apple's customer satisfaction remains way out in front of the pack. No brainer there really

iPhone offline apps made possible by HTML 5 compliant Mobile Safari
It shouldn't come as a surprise that offline web apps are on the way to iPhone and Android platforms in the form of Google Offline. The trick is that newer browser technology allows the storage of cached information indatabase form. In Firefox and Safari, you currently need Google Gears to do this. Soon it will be built in (like in Chrome). Also, new betas of Firefox allow geolocation in the browser. This should be standard in all browsers in a year. The video from MWC 2009

The case for a $149 iPod touch?
I've made my case for a $149 iPod touch over at Computerworld. Thanks for your input ;)
Many Apple customers (myself included) really wish Apple would build a Netbook. I want an Apple Netbook not necessarily for the cheapness, but more for the smallness (though the cheapness wouldn't hurt) and of course to be able to run OSX natively. Apple has said, again and again, that they can't make a Netbook that would compete in price with the ASUS

NTT docomo and Sharp show projector phone at MWC
We had a brief peek at yest another pico projecting set at MWC, this time an NTT docomo Samsung affair without a name, price, or even a release date. Specs are as sketchy as these are usable in a brightly lit room, but the hopes are this device will be used for services like mobile TV, home theater (yeah, right), document editing, presentations, and video calling. We were enthused to see the mock ups (pictured above) of where the design of this device could go -- and we're hoping that by next year the bricks we've seen lately will be gone and sleek design will become the norm. Dell Mini 10 shows up for pre-order... from QVC?
You'd think with an in-demand new product like the Mini 10 Dell would want to snag as many pre-orders as it can for itself, but it looks like none other than QVC will be getting first dibs on the company's latest netbook, as Dell has now confirmed after the netbook made an appearance on shopping channel's website. Starting today, it'll apparently be offering one configuration of the Mini 10 for $559, which includes a 1.6GHz Z530 Atom processor, a 160GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, Windows XP and, of course, that 10.1-inch SVGA display. News: Night vision video shows iPhone 3G innards, flaws
An iPhone 3G owner has recorded a video of his handset using his camcorder’s “night vision” setting, which provides a unique look at the phone. SEC charges, settles with RIM executives over backdating issue
Well, it looks like RIM's top executives weren't about to get off the hook after just paying a little fine to the Ontario Securities Commision over that backdated stock options issue, as the US Securities and Exchange Commission is now getting on the act with some charges of its own. Sygic demos turn-by-turn nav app for iPhone

Canon announces the Selphy CP780 portable photo printer
Looking for some red hot photo printing action "on the go," as it were? Canon has just announced the newest addition to its line of SELPHY compact photo printers. The CP780 boasts faster print speeds, improved image quality, and (count 'em!) three colors. That's right, three. Archos 10 netbook now available for purchase
So, the last we'd heard, Archos' 10-inch netbook was going to be available in April, but here it is -- the middle-to-beginning-of-the-end of February, and it's available to order now. Intel may give NVIDIA license post-lawsuit

Thievery at MWC! Telstra exec's HTC with WinMo 6.5 stolen
It's not clear if Telstra chief Sol Trujillo was sporting an HTC Touch Pro2 or a Touch Diamond2 at MWC this week, but one thing's for sure: he's doesn't have it anymore. A pickpocket apparently lifted the handset off another Teslsta exec who was checking it out today -- and making matters worse, it was running an early build of Windows Mobile 6.5. Oops. TiVo and DISH / Echostar head back to Texas for another patent duel
Well, just when it was starting to look like TiVo and DISH / Echostar may finally have put their seemingly never-ending patent dispute behind them, the two companies now look to be rekindling things in Texas this week, where they've landed in court once more to sort out that pesky patent involving TiVo's Time Warp software. As patent dispute junkies may recall, TiVo first wound up being awarded some damages in the matter way back in 2006, after which Echostar was forced to develop some workaround software that it claims no longer infringed on TiVo's Time Warp patent, which allows for recording of one channel while the user watches another. Intel said readying low-power quad Core i7
A tip to Fudzilla indicates that Intel is preparing a Core i7-based equivalent to its new Core 2 Quad S chips. The processor would be an adaptation of Intel's upcoming Lynnfield design for mainstream, quad-core processors and, like the current designs, would reduce the thermal peak power to 65W and render the design small enough to fit in all-in-one PCs and compact desktops.

Intel takes NVIDIA to court over chipset licensing
Oh, brother. Another Intel / NVIDIA paper fight? As fate would so fittingly have it, these two giants are meeting up yet again, this time in the courtroom. Canon releases color-matched SELPHY printer
Canon on Tuesday released a new compact photo printer in three colors, the SELPHY CP780. Meizu iPhone clone makes long-awaited debut

Viliv S5 and X70 MIDs hands-on with video!
We just played around with Viliv's latest MIDs, the stylish S5 and X70. Both devices use haptic feedback for onscreen keyboard input, and despite the resistive screen we found them both to offer some of the best touchscreen interaction we've seen on devices like this. They were both running Windows Vista, and seemed rather responsive and usable, even with Atom under the hood. What's really impressive is the X70 (pictured), which is thinner than the S5, and also can be mounted to an optional leather case that brings a keyboard and foldability to the device, and turns the unit into a laptop of sorts. iPhones now 33% of Rogers' smartphone sales

Samsung Show hands-on and video at MWC
The Engadget Spanish team just got their hands on the Samsung Show (the European, i7410 model) projector phone that we first caught a sneak peek of a CES. The Show's projector is powered by Texas Instruments' DLP pico technology, and though the fact that it packs a projector does increase the bulkiness of the phone as far as looks are concerned, the phone is still rather small and light. The talk this week at Mobile World Congress has been largely positive about Microsoft's latest iteration of its smartphone UI, Windows Mobile 6.5. Still, some of us at Engadget (well, one of us, at least), feel like the folks in Redmond missed the mark by a longshot. Instead of demonstrating its technical prowess and vast resources, Microsoft limped out a half-hearted rehash of an OS we've seen all too much of, and managed to blind most onlookers with a storm of big time partnerships and bloated PR. AT&T resumes $100 iPhone refurb discount
AT&T has resumed an earlier discount made possible for the iPhone 3G. The carrier is once again selling refurbished iPhones with a $100 price cut, bringing the cost of the 8GB model down to $99, and the 16GB version to $199. A fresh two-year contract is also required, and AT&T warns that some phones could be marred by "minor scratches."

TI's OMAP 3 hardware doesn't manage to do Windows Mobile 6.5 any favors
We were really impressed with Texas Instruments' OMAP 3-based mobile development platform when we saw it running Android earlier today, and the hardware seems to hold up well to all sorts of video-accelerated magic for a multitude of Linux-based interfaces. Not so much with Windows Mobile 6.5. Granted, this is a very early build of the OS according to Microsoft, and is lacking all sorts optimization mojo that will go into the final product due end-of-year-ish, but at the same time this is basically an interface skin to Windows Mobile 6 that Microsoft has had nearly a year to work on since 6.1, and it's not exaggerating to say that performance is a complete joke

All-electric Wheego Whip hitting America in May... slowly
You can probably tell from the image above that the Wheego Whip isn't the fastest automobile to ever hit the streets, but it'll still be getting Americans from point A to point B before most of those other "concepts" will. The company is currently looking to score dealers that will sell its "electric LSVs (Low Speed Vehicles)," the first of which is obviously the Whip. If all goes to plan, it'll have 50 dealers across America by May, and given that this is "the best affordable electric car in the world" (that's the words of RTEV CEO Mike McQuary), we'd say all 50 should be brimming with customers. Unfortunately, we're not told just how fast slow this thing actually goes nor how expensive cheap it'll be, but hey, May's just a few months out, anyway.

AT&T is once again offering refurbished iPhone 3G units for $99. As the company did for a brief time in late December, 8GB models are available for $99, while 16GB refurbs are selling for $199. iPhone 3G derzeit nicht mehr als Prepaid-Variante zu haben
Im Herbst des vergangenen Jahres stellte der deutsche Apple-Partner T-Mobile das iPhone 3G in einer Prepaid-Variante vor. Zum Preis von rund 570 Euro erhielt man das "Xtra Pac Apple iPhone 3G 8GB", in dem sich eine Prepaid-SIM, das iPhone 3G und insgesamt 100 Euro Startguthaben befanden. Nun hat der rosa Riese dieses Angebot laut iphone-ticker.de überraschend eingestellt. Die Fragen seitens iphone-ticker.de an T-Mobile zu den Gründen hinter dieser Entscheidung blieben unter dem Strich unbeantwortet. We've been waiting on more details about a "forthcoming" Samsung MID for what feels like centuries now, but if a recent find is what it says it is, we'd say a Samsung-branded, WiMAX-enabled Mobile Internet Device is pretty close to production. According to the good chaps over at Joystiq (and, you know, Nintendo), you can get your grubby mitts all over the DSi come April 5th. The system will launch for $169.99, will include all the goodies you've been reading about -- like those dual cameras and downloadable content called DSiWare (starting at the totally mysterious price point of 200 DSi Points). Der Hightech-Verband Bitkom hat die heute veröffentlichte Breitband-Strategie der Bundesregierung begrüßt, die wesentliche Vorschläge der Wirtschaft aufgegriffen hat. "Die Industrie braucht für den kostspieligen Breitbandausbau ein investitionsfreundliches Umfeld, mit langfristiger Planungs- und Rechtssicherheit", sagte Bitkom-Präsident August-Wilhelm Scheer. MIT's 'bar of soap' knows just what you want when you hold it
It's no mind reader, but MIT researchers Brandon Taylor and Michael Bove's "bar of soap" device should be able to tell you what gadget you're pretending to use based on how you hold it. Loaded with 72 capacitive sensors and a three-axis accelerometer, the prototype has a small screen that says what it believes you're pantomiming -- camera, phone, PDA, gamepad, and remote control are demonstrated in the accompanying video. In a slightly more realistic / entertaining example, a baseball is stuffed with sensors and used to determine what kind of pitch you've. Samsung's Blue Earth is saving the world from behind glass
The entirety of civilization seems fairly well and dedicated to one-upping each other in the "green" department, and Samsung is looking to up the ante once again by stating that "blue is the new green" and putting out the new Blue Earth solar phone to prove it. Sadly, the Blue Earth isn't quite ready to go -- currently it's only to be seen in non-working mockup form, though the hardware is certainly looking good. Samsung's showing off its eco-packaging and built-in energy-saving functionality, including an "Eco Walk" function to let you know how many trees you save by walking places. We just got a great look at the potential of Android on Texas Instruments' new Zoom OMAP34x-II Mobile Development Platform, a sort of sexy cousin to Compulab's exeda. iFixit haben das neue MacBook Pro zerlegt und eine entsprechenden Fotostrecke veröffentlicht. Um die Unterseite des MacBook Pro zu öffnen, ist das Lösen von zehn Philips-Schrauben notwendig. Mit einigen wenigen Schrauben kann im Anschluss sogar die angeblich fest integrierte Batterie gelöst und entfernt werden. Etwas mehr Hand und Fuß dürften da die Andeutungen haben, die Analyst Toni Sacconaghi von Bernstein Research von Apples Geschäftsführern Tim Cook, Peter Oppenheimer und Phil Schiller in Erfahrung gebracht hat. Brasilien startet Linux-Großprojekt
Userful, ein kanadischer Spezialist für linuxbasierende Desktop-Virtualisierung, und sein brasilianischer Vertriebspartner Thin Networks konnten nach eigenen Angaben das bisher größte Projekt weltweit zur Desktop-Virtualisierung gewinnen. Die beiden Firmen sollen 356.800 Arbeitsplätze an Schulen in rund 5000 brasilianischen Gemeinden ausrollen. Das Projekt sei gleichzeitig das größte bisher durchgeführte Linux-Projekt der Welt, teilen sie mit. Nach Abschluss der ersten Phase sind derzeit rund 19.000 PC-Arbeitsplätze an Schulen im ländlichen Raum in Betrieb.

CeBIT-Karte weiterhin als Fahrschein gültig

Einen wirklich guten Eindruck beim schnellen Antesten macht das kostenlose Amazon Album Art Widget für den Mac. Per Mausklick im Dashboard wird das Cover wahlweise für den ausgewählten oder den aktuellen Titel bei Amazon.com gesucht (auf Wunsch lassen sich auch Amazon.de und weitere Amazon-Lokalisierungen voreinstellen). Falls mehrere Bilder gefunden werden, lässt sich das gewünschte in einer Rasteransicht auswählen, anschließend kann man das Cover direkt dem Titel oder Album zuweisen.

Umfrage: Firmen lehnen Bindung an nur einen IT-Partner ab
Eine große Mehrheit deutscher Unternehmen hält nicht viel von der Festlegung auf einen IT-Hauptlieferanten. Dies belegt eine Umfrage von Völcker Informatik unter hundert Fach- und Führungskräften aus der IT-Branche. 46 Prozent halten diese Vorgehensweise für "gefährlich", da sich das eigene Unternehmen zu sehr in die Abhängigkeit eines "Big Players" wie Oracle, SAP oder IBM begebe, "deren Produktpolitik der Einzelne überhaupt nicht beeinflussen kann."

Nokia to shove Qualcomm MSM chipsets into future phones
Nokia sure is doing a lot of hand shaking over in Barcelona, as shortly after it signed a gentlemanly agreement with Adobe, the Finnish handset maker has decided to equip some of its future devices with Qualcomm chipsets. Right now, details are somewhat vague, though we do know the two are hoping to "develop advanced UMTS mobile devices initially for North America." Sony bringt mit der Cyber-shot DSC-H20 eine Neuauflage seiner 10fach-Zoomkamera auf den Markt. Skat klopfen auf iPod touch, iPhone und Computer
Nachdem bereits gefühlte 10.000 Solitär- und Poker-Spiele für den iPod touch bzw. das iPhone erhältlich sind, findet sich jetzt erfreulicherweise das erste Skat-Spiel (2,99 Euro) im iTunes App Store.
Die Software von Peter Heinlein ist eine Umsetzung der kostenlos spielbaren Shareware Skat des selben Autors, die Versionsnummer wird analog zu der für Mac und PC erhältlichen Variante daher bereits mit 8.0 angegeben.
Wer sich ob der Investition von 2,99 Euro nicht sicher ist, kann sich also zunächst die Desktop-Variante laden. Ein zwei Spielchen genügen, damit man auch nach längerer Abstinenz wieder voll bei der Sache ist und mit Gewalt vom Computer bzw. iPod oder iPhone getrennt werden muss. OK, we used up all of our good jokes in the titleand it wasn't even that good. But if you want to know what the inside of your MacBook 17 inch looks like, have a gander at iFixit's take apart.
It really doesn't look like rocket science to pull out the battery - it even has a nice lil'tab to help those with meat hooks. For all of the griping about a non-removable battery, it doesn't seem like it is that "non".

Canon PowerShot SD780 IS, SD960 IS make brief, semi-official debut
These aren't completely official just yet, but an impromptu appearance on Canon's own website certainly seems to indicate that the company's new PowerShot SD780 IS and SD960 IS should be getting the official treatment sooner rather than later. Both of these are 12-megapixel compacts and, most notably, each pack an HD movie mode (720p) and the requisite HDMI port to go along with it, along with Canon's trademark DIGIC IV image processor, and a 3x optical zoom on the SD780 (pictured above) and a 4x on the slightly larger SD960 (after the break). Samsung OmniaHD's camera put to the test
Samsung sure has made some high claims about its OmniaHD supermegaphone, and now we've got some HD footage and stills to put those claims to the test. The camera does seem pretty stellar for a phone, and the video is undoubtedly HD, but we saw pretty sluggish performance in the HD recording mode, both in the on-screen preview and in the finished product. We'll chalk that up to the super-early build of the device software, but hopefully this will be resolved before the phone ships. The phone also does ultra-slowmotion video, which is awesome, but seems similarly inconsistent and stuttery in frame rate. 17-inch unibody MacBook Pro gets disassembled, examined
The battery on the now-shipping 17-inch unibody MacBook Pro may not be removable for average, warranty-abiding users, but that didn't stop the folks at iFixit from removing it and just about everything else that isn't soldered on. As you might expect, however, apart from that over-sized battery, the internals aren't too different from the 15-inch unibody MacBook Pro, although the 17-incher unsurprisingly has a pair of noticeably larger fans to keep everything cool, and iFixit describes the component density as "amazing." Samsung: at least three Android phones and a LiMo handset in 2009
