Motion detecting SIMSense SIM card opens new world of possibilities
File this one away in the "man, I should've thought of that" category. Here at Mobile World Congress, Oberthur Technologies is making a name for itself by introducing the planet's first motion detecting and handset-independent SIM card. SIMSense, as it's so eloquently named, could open up a whole new world of interaction with phones that don't come with any sort of accelerometer built in. For instance, a user could simply shake their cellphone upon receiving a second call in order to send out a pre-written SMS that explains the situation. Gameloft: 200 Millionen Spieledownloads
Gameloft, der Marktführer für Download-Spiele (Asphalt 4, Brothers in Arms, Real Football 2009), hat Marke von 200 Millionen verkauften Spielen übersprungen. We're not quite sure if you're seeing what's happening here, but Apple and RIM are working themselves right into the time-out corner. We already heard earlier today that Palm would be joining Adobe's Open Screen Project -- which, by the way, guarantees Flash 10 support on the Pre -- and now we're told that Nokia is following suit. What it all boils down to is this: Google, Microsoft, Palm, and Nokia are all expected to release platforms or handsets in the coming year or two which will support Flash 10, all while Apple's iPhone attempts to limp by with YouTube support. AT&T pays out $8.2 million settlement over school E-Rate program
"Settlement" and "needy schools" aren't two things that most companies would like to see in a press release, but that's exactly what AT&T is dealing with at the moment after it has payed out $8.2 million to settle a dispute involving the E-Rate program, which uses funds collected from phone customers to pay for hardware and connectivity service fees for schools and libraries. According to the Department of Justice, AT&T (or, more specifically, AT&T Technical Services Corp.) allegedly not only engaged in non-competitive bidding practices for E-Rate contracts, but claimed and received E-rate funds for goods and services that weren't eligible for the program, and over-billed the E-Rate program for some of the services it provided. Archos announces new Moorestown-based netbook, 9-inch tablet
We saw the rough'n'ready Archos 10 get reviewed mere days ago, and now the company's back with the Atom-powered Archos 10s, a new 20mm thin netbook with 3.5G functionality, 1GB memory, Windows XP Home and up to 160GB storage. Additionaly, the company has designs on a 17mm-thin, 9-inch tablet based on Intel's Moorestown MID platform, to see the light of day sometime this year. Sporting the Atom Z5xx processor, this guy will include the Intel System Controller Hub chipset, up to 160GB storage, VOD and hi-def video playback, and digital TV reception. Sony Ericsson Idou hands-on and video walkthrough
Sony Ericsson launched its 12.1 megapixel Idou at Mobile World Congress yesterday evening, and while not a finished device, we checked it out anyway. The Idou will eventually roll with the Symbian Foundation's OS, but the version we're seeing here is somewhere in between. The resistive touchscreen (essentially the same as found on the XpressMusic 5800) is immense, glossy, and already brilliant. The transitions and sweeping gestures (check them in the vid) are really responsive and quick, with no real lag. We checked it against its nearest neighbor in the C905 and it is slim in comparison. ARM debuts Sparrow multicore netbook processor
We've had our eyes peeled for ARM Cortex-based netbook news, and now among the action this week at MWC '09 we're getting our first look at Sparrow, a Cortex A9 processor aimed squarely at netbook manufacturers. This is a multi-core update to the Cortex A8 (processor of choice for the Palm Pre and Pandora), and it's been speculated that this could be the processor for the next generation iPhone, with "at least triple the computing power of the ARM11 processors found in the [current] iPhone and T-Mobile G1." Microsoft gets sued over Windows XP downgrade fees
Microsoft may be doing its best to move past Windows XP once and for all, but a Los Angeles woman is alleging that the company is all too happy to bank some extra change on the OS in the meantime, and that it's essentially trying to have it both ways. As a result, she's now suing Microsoft over its XP "downgrade" fees, and requesting that the lawsuit be granted class-action certification so others can get a piece of the action. Apparently, Emma Alvarado bought a Lenovo PC last June and had to pay an additional $59.25 to downgrade to XP, which she claims is simply a case of Microsoft taking advantage of consumer demand for XP to

Mitsubishi unveils prototype in-dash Blu-ray player
Difficult though it may be to believe, Panasonic showcased a conceptual in-dash BD deck of its own back in October of 2007. Obviously, nothing has really come of that, so Mitsubishi's stepping in with a prototype of its own. It's stated that the player has only a third of the volume compared to a traditional "home Blu-ray player," with it somehow being able to slip into a standard single-DIN opening. Acer unveils Tempo smartphone series: X960, F900, M900, and DX900
Not long after we spotted four new Acer phones in Barcelona has the company officially unveiled the Tempo smartphone quartet, albeit with a few typo-laden spec sheets. Here's what we know. the X960 has a 2.8-inch VGA TFT LCD touch screen, GPS, virtual keyboard, MP3 plaer, and 3.2 megapixel camera. The F900's got a wider, 3.8-inch WVGA TFT touchscreen, 3 megapixel camera, and G- and L-sensors but otherwise sports the same features as the X960. LG's KS360 to be company's first Android phone?

Huawei's Android touchphone is a mystery wrapped in an enigma
We were really hoping MWC would be Android's coming out party, but while there's a hefty amount of name-dropping at the show, nobody much seems ready to put hardware on the line. And then there's Huawei. We were expecting a handset from them at the show, and they're halfway there, announcing an Android phone, but only bringing a non-working prototype to show for it. We knew production was destined to start in 2009, and lo and behold, Orange has committed to selling the thing. NVIDIA Tegra: Mobilchips für tagelanges Onlinevergnügen
Es klingt wie ein informationstechnisches Wunschkonzert: HD-Videowiedergabe, Unterstützung für drahtlose Netzwerke und 3G-Mobilfunk, mehrere Tage Akkulaufzeit. LG Arena KM900 hands-on
We've been waiting to get our grubby mitts on the LG Arena KM900 and try out the S-Class 3D UI for ourselves, and well -- it's a nice featurephone interface, but it's not exactly revolutionary. The widget interface is nice, and we're into the picture-based contacts screen, but the icon-based home screen just feels cluttered, especially when viewed in the expanded horizontal orientation. It'll be interesting to see how LG refines these elements in its upcoming onslaught of Windows Mobile phones -- we wouldn't drop back to a featurephone for this stuff, but we'd be plenty interested in seeing more phones like the

Android-powered HTC Magic coming to Vodafone

We saw a Touch Diamond2 running old-skool Windows Mobile 6.1 this morning -- and don't get us wrong, the hardware's pretty hot, but who really wants that noise when we've got the same thing running Windows Mobile 6.5 a few blocks away? Shortly after the fanfare of Microsoft's press conference today, we were ushered downstairs for a walkthrough on a freshly-flashed Touch Diamond2 of virtually everything that makes 6.5 different from the versions before it, and while we're not blown away by the sheer freshness or paradigm-shiftyness of what we're seeing here, it's a totally acceptable bump of 0.4 in the version number. Let's put it this way: we still have a burning desire in our hearts and our loins for 7.0, whenever that happens.

LG GM730 hands-on (with video!)
We had opportunity to check out one of LG's newest smartphones, the LG GM730 at MWC today. We've seen all the specs but thought knew you all needed a really good look at the new S-Class UI. This phone is not final, so our hands-on shows a few interface hiccups, but, you'll get the drift. So what's the take away here? This appears to be a darn fine overlay on Windows Mobile, access to things from the home screen are simple and quick: mail, messaging, calendar, menus to get at network settings and so forth are a welcome addition. The hits keep coming at MWC 09, and while we're racing around from liveblog to liveblog, the crew at Engadget Spanish managed to snag some quality time with Samsung's Ultra Touch S8300 slider. NVIDIA today introduced a new platform based on the NVIDIA Tegra 600 Series ARM based computer-on-a-chip that enables a $99, always-on, always-connected HD mobile internet device (MID) that can go days between battery charges. ARM had two separate announcements this morning in Barcelona. The first was that its partners had ramped up its Cortex A8 processor production and would have chips in production soon. This class of chip (TI OMAP3) is what the upcoming (TI OMAP3 series) Palm Pre, Archos, and Toshiba (Qualcomm Snapdragon) phones will have inside. We'll likely this type of chip in 2009 iPhones.
In addition, with the help of Sony Erricsson/Silicon Partners, ARM will be demonstrating multi-core processor Cortex A9 processor technology that will be used in 2010 running SymbianOS.
The company said it will show a low-power Cortex chip manufactured using IBM's 32-nanometer process that could bring features like full 1080p high-definition video to smartphones while drawing less power.

LG brings S-Class UI to Windows Mobile with GM730
Turns out LG's fancy new feature phone UI -- S-Class, as it's called -- isn't just for feature phones. The GM730 brings the same 3D interface into the wide world of Windows Mobile, along with 7.2Mbps HSDPA, 2Mbps HSUPA, quadband EDGE, and Internet Explorer Mobile 6.0 into a package just 11.9mm thick. Sadly, LG's elected to do nothing but 900 / 2100MHz with the 3G here, so North Americans are left out of the equation at this point -- but much of the rest of the world can look into picking it up in the first half of the year.

We sniffed out Nokia's new E55 not-a-QWERTY QWERTY candybar phone, which uses a SureType-esque predictive text mechanism with two letters per key, and looks pretty good doing it. Nokia's calling this the "world's thinnest smartphone," quite the feat if it's true, and it might just give Nokia's ultrapopular E71 a run for its money in the "fashionably smart" category. We played with the phone for a brief moment, and though it's running an alpha software build, we didn't have much trouble typing out a quick message. First off, this set is a stunner, build quality and feel in your hand is really a quality affair. The material choices in both metal and plastics used here are really first rate -- we gush because we're rather impressed. The screen is bright, easy to read and the UI overhaul -- and new features underneath -- are much appreciated. One standout in the new improved UI has to be the start menu which, when clicked, pops you into a full screen shortcut list which is miles better to surf through with a finger. All in all? First hands-on with the HTC Touch Pro2 (with video!)
So this thing's definitely got some heft to it -- and honestly, especially for a business-centric device in this class, we don't think that's a bad thing. As with just about everything HTC churns out, the Touch Pro2 is exquisitely manufactured, feels rock-solid, and the WVGA is absolutely awesome -- we noticed that the gestures and animations are totally smooth and responsive, proving that WinMo is perfectly capable of handling this kind of UI dazzle. Tikitag renamed Touchatag, adds QR codes to repertoire
We haven't heard much from Tikitag since they showed up on the scene last September, sticking RFID tags to everything in sight. The Alcatel-Lucent Venture-backed company's popped up on the radar again, only this time it's taken on a more tactile-focused name, Touchatag, and is now touting 2D barcode support, including do-it-yourself tag creation system for adding some QR ciphers to your business cards or anything else you wish to lay claim. Intel nimmt wegen Erfolg der Atom-Prozessoren einige mobile Core-2-Prozessoren aus dem Angebot
Intel hat angesichts des anhaltenden Erfolgs von Netbooks mit Atom-Prozessor mehrere mobile Core-2-Prozessoren, vornehmlich für Sub-Notebooks, gestrichen. Laut Golem verschwinden demnach die ULV-Varianten (Ultra Low Voltage) 7600 mit 1,2 GHz und 7700 mit 1,33 GHz. Lediglich die Variante 7500 mit 1,06 GHz verbleibt im Angebot. Schweden: Verfahren gegen The Pirate Bay beginnt
In Schweden beginnt heute der Prozess gegen die vier Gründer des umstrittenen Torrent-Trackers The Pirate Bay. Den Angeklagten Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Peter Sunde Kolmisoppi und Carl Lundström wird Behilfe zu Verstößen gegen das schwedische Urheberrecht vorgeworfen. Im Falle einer Verurteilung drohen den Beschuldigten Haftstrafen von bis zu zwei Jahren und eine Geldstrafe von 1,2 Millionen Kronen (110.000 Euro).

Wurm "Conficker" infiziert Hunderte Bundeswehr-Computer
Wie ein Sprecher des Bundesverteidigungsministerium mitgeteilt hat, sind mehrere Hundert Computer der Bundeswehr von dem Wurm "Conficker" befallen. Bereits am vergangenen Donnerstag habe der Schädling die Rechner angegriffen. Einzelne Dienststellen seien inzwischen vom Netzwerk der Bundeswehr getrennt worden, um eine weitere Verbreitung des Wurms, der eine Schwachstelle im Server Service von Windows nutzt, zu unterbinden. Das für die Netzwerksicherheit zuständige Computer Emergency Response Team der Bundeswehr (CERTBw) soll Maßnahmen zur Entfernung des Wurms eingeleitet haben, so dass die volle Funktionsfähigkeit der Bundeswehr-Computer bald wiederhergestellt werden kann.

Spielebranche erzielte 2008 neuen Umsatzrekord
2008 konnte die Spielebranche in Deutschland 14 Prozent mehr Umsatz erzielen als im Vorjahr und erreichte damit einen neuen Rekord. Als Wachstumstreiber zeigten sich laut BIU insbesondere die Wii, Playstation 3 und Xbox 360 - während die PC-Spiele wieder leichte Verluste hinnehmen mussten.

HTC's Touch Diamond2 adds zoom bar, mega screen, surprisingly few diamonds
HTC is following up on its ultra-sexy touchphone, the Touch Diamond, with the new Touch Diamond2, which seems quite worthy of the title of successor. This time around there's much more room for screen, with a huge 3.6-inch 480 x 800 LCD up front, and around back there's a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus. The other main addition is a "touch zoom bar" below the screen -- just like on big brother Touch Pro2 -- which we presume provides expected (and welcome) functionality. There's also the new version of TouchFLO 3D running on Windows Mobile, but under the hood there's the same old 528MHz processor, and the whole kit is actually a tad thicker a 0.54-inches. Still, memory is up to 512MB ROM and 288MB RAM, and if HTC keeps hoisting pixels and sexy on us at this rate we can hardly complain. This

Basics: AAC oder MP3 - Dateien mit iTunes konvertieren
Sowohl MP3 wie auch das von Apple verwendete AAC (eine Weiterentwicklung des MP3-Formats) sind stark komprimierte Audioformate, auf diese Weise werden die im Vergleich zu unkomprimierten Formaten wie WAV oder AIFF äußerst kompakten Dateigrößen erzielt. Jedes Mal, wenn also eine Datei in einem komprimierten Audioformat gespeichert wird, fallen Audioinformationen unter den Tisch und der Klang wird (wenn auch kaum hörbar) wieder ein wenig schlechter.
Daher sollte man nach Möglichkeit gänzlich auf das Hin- und Herkonvertieren zwischen diese Formaten verzichten. Manchmal kommt man allerdings nicht darum herum. Zum Beispiel wenn die eigene Musiksammlung gänzlich in AAC gehalten ist, der Audioplayer der Freundin aber nur MP3s abspielen kann.

Auch Apple senkt Preise für SSDs
Nachdem Intel aufgrund wachsender Konkurrenz seine Preise für SSDs gesenkt hat, zieht nun auch Apple bei seinen SSD-Angeboten für die aktuellen MacBook Aluminium nach. Der Aufpreis für eine 128 GB fassende SSD (Solid State Disk) liegt nun je nach MacBook-Modell zwischen 280 Euro und 420 Euro. Nokia Ovi Store unveiled, launches in May
Nokia's just announced at its Mobile World Congress presentation that, lo and behold, the company's launching its own online app and media portal, the Ovi Store. Download, Mosh, widgets are going to be focuses of the Ovi Store. The N97 will be the first device to be "pre-integrated" with Ovi Store, but "tons" of existing S40 and S60 customers will be able to download the service starting in May. MWC: Intel und LG entwickeln Mobile Internet Devices
Intel und LG Electronics haben während des Mobile World Congress in Barcelona die gemeinsame Entwicklung von Mobile Internet Devices (MID) angekündigt. LG soll damit einer der ersten Anbieter sein, der Geräte mit dem Atom-Nachfolger "Moorestown" auf den Markt bringen wird. Als Betriebssystem will LG das Linux-basierte Moblin einsetzen. Beschleunigt Nvidia den G92b-Chip?

NVIDIA's Tegra to power $99 MIDs
NVIDIA's really promising the moon here, and if they even halfway deliver we could have a real "game changer" (as they say in the business) on our hands. What's on offer is a theoretical $99 slide-out keyboard MID, running a Tegra 600 chipset and Windows CE -- NVIDIA, as usual, offers the innards and the concept, but will leave it to manufacturers to create (and price) the actual units. The device could handle HD video playback, "days" between battery charges and always-on wireless connectivity. This form factor lands in between NVIDIA's Tegra APX chipset for smartphones and ION GeForce chipset for netbooks, and if it actually delivers it seems like it could actually make MIDs viable in the market. NVIDIA's Tegra jumps on the Android bandwagon
We've been hearing all kinds about NVIDIA's Tegra the last couple weeks, and have all been quietly wishing and hoping that we'd see Android getting some action -- and we will, and how! Apparently while the initial focus is Windows Mobile, NVIDIA sees Android surpassing Windows Mobile sales into 2012 and has decided to put some serious grunt into the new OS's development. The NVIDIA Tegra 2600 part is being developed with an optimized and accelerated Android release aimed squarely at OEM development and set for release sometime in Q2 this year. We've no idea how long it takes from reference to finished-in-our-hands-product, but the briefing hints at a couple mystereious sets, the "IAC S2" in Q3 and a "Yulong N8" by Q4. This

You can definitely feel the oncoming rush or portable WiFi hotspots now that we've got products like Novatel's insanely slick MiFi on the way to market, and now Option's stepped up with its own flavor. While the end result is the same as Novatel's offering, to get the GlobeSurfer X·1 surfing any kind of 3G data network, you'll need to add a USB 3G modem of your own. So it's not totally clear to us why you'd wait for this thing over a C905 that you could buy today, but once again, that's the confusion behind Sony Ericsson's Cyber-shot / Walkman branding that they're claiming they hope to clear up going forward -- it's just that the W995 isn't really a step in that direction, and we weren't huge fans of the chicklet-sized nav keys up front. That being said, it seems like a fine phone overall -- the display looks crisp and vivid, the interface was relatively snappy, and there's little to complain about having an 8.1 megapixel autofocus cam at your disposal. EU commissioner pushing for standard connector for all cellphones
While some companies like Connectland have already offered up their own solution to the problem of multiple cellphone connectors (seen at right), a European Union commissioner now seems to be taking the idea one step further, and is starting to push the notion of one standard cellphone connector to rule them all.
