Newman ManMan A1 is way too manly for us
Seriously, you just can't find a PMP that's any manlier than this. For starters, the phrase "man" is used three times in the product name (Newman ManMan A1), and secondly, it's fluorescent pink in color. Clearly, Newman is aiming at those with a soft spot in their hearts for the previous generation iPod nano, and the SmartTouch UI even gives users that CoverFlow feel without all the paperwork involved in buying a legitimate device. OCZ introduces Apex series of 2.5-inch SATA II SSDs
Another month, another new line of SSDs. This go 'round, we're having a glance at OCZ Technology's Apex Series, a midrange line of solid state drives of the 2.5-inch SATA II variety. The drives will be made available in 60GB, 120GB and 250GB flavors, and all three will offer 230MB/sec read and 160MB/sec write speeds. As with most every other SSD, these were also designed with low power consumption and reliability in mind, and the lightweight alloy housing keeps things secure during those unsettling installation procedures. Stanton's SCS-1 digital DJ system finally ships
It sure took 'em long enough, but Stanton has just announced that its completely boss SCS-1 System is finally shipping to eager DJs. The system is comprised of the SCS.1d deck and the SCS.1m mixer, both of which give funkmasters that digital flair while preserving the familiar feel of older school gear. One of the unique technologies is the HSS1394 protocol, which is a proprietary high-speed communications standard developed specifically for the SC System 1 in order to transmit MIDI messages rapidly over FireWire. What Apple could learn from Palm's webOS
In case you missed the keynote, Palm took some special moments to let everyone know that they're not trying to compete with Apple -- which is of course exactly what they're doing with the Pre and webOS. Dream G2 doesn't get the irony of ripping off an open-source OS
So we guess we gave Sciphone too much credit when we thought its G2 was running real, actual, genuine Android. "Why would anyone ape the user interface," we thought, "when the codebase is available to whomever wants it?" Silly us! RM and DACTA are launching a new commercial educational robot. Called ED-E, this fully programmable, PC-compatible bot's got 17 servo motors which enable him to jump, do backflips, head spins, and full-on dance routines. Apple Q1 results still expected to beat guidance
Apple will still beat guidance for its fiscal first quarter, even if it may not do as well as previously hoped for, analysts with UBS and Kaufman Bros. suggest. The latter is expecting $9.76 billion in revenue, with an EPS beating Apple 's guidance of $1.06 to $1.35. The consensus view is $9.85 billion and $1.39 however, and Kaufman had once called for figures of $10 billion and $1.44.

Mit dem Zümo 660 Europa hat Garmin ein Navigationsgerät für Motorradfahrer vorgestellt, das über ein 4,3-Zoll-Widescreen-Touch-Display verfügt. Canon rolls out simple PowerShot A480
In an unusual between-shows update, Canon today launched the PowerShot A480. The replacement for the A470 has a much smaller (about 25 percent) footprint and a new, highly simplified control scheme that scraps the mode dial for easier buttons and a reportedly streamlined software front end. IBM-Patente erreichen 2008 Rekordniveau
Das US-Patentamt hat IBM im vergangenen Jahr 4186 Patente bewilligt, 33 Prozent mehr als 2007. Damit hat IBM als erstes Unternehmen in einem Jahr mehr als 4000 Patente zugesprochen bekommen. Dell's 2209WA LCD monitor reviewed, deemed king of 22-inchers
Dell's 2209WA just surfaced a few days ago, and already we're seeing the first review of said panel courtesy of CNET's Australian branch. The 22-inch IPS display was said to boast "excellent color and viewing angles and great gaming performance" at a fantastic price point, with the only real knocks being the omission of 1:1 scaling and the inset design which occasionally caused reflections. Yeah, minor quibbles indeed. Toshiba will Festplatten-Sparte von Fujitsu kaufen

Aus verlässlicher Quelle will die französische Internseite MacBidouille erfahren haben, dass der erste französische Apple Store nicht im Pariser Louvre, sondern an der Rue Halevy entstehen wird. You know Palm's on to something when reputable sites start to splinter around its newly announced OS and handset. TapMaps: Offline-Stadtpläne für iPhone und Touch
Mit den sogenannten TapMaps bietet PlanetaryScale hochauflösende Straßenkarten für das iPhone und den iPod touch im App Store an. Die auf OpenStreetMap basierenden, und bisher für Berlin, Paris und die San Francisco Bay Area erhältlichen Karten werden komplett auf in den Gerätespeicher geladen und können somit unabhängig von einer Internet- oder Mobilfunkverbindung genutzt werden. Dies macht nicht nur für iPod touch-Besitzer, sondern auch mit dem iPhone im Ausland Sinn. Die TapMaps erlauben zwar weder Navigation noch Routenplanung, dürften aber in Verbindung mit der Ortsbestimmungsfunktion dennoch eine große Hilfe in der Fremde sein.
Im App Store sind die TapMaps für jeweils 7,99 Euro hier erhältlich. Der Preis scheint uns angesichts des damit verbundenen Komforts am Reiseort ganz in Ordnung.

New Interface in Snow Leopard
When Snow Leopard was announced, it was meant to refresh the all system layers when touching the interface. So far, all beta versions followed this schema, and if the engine is completely different, one can not spot the difference between Leopard and Snow Leopard.
However, it seems that Apple decided to introduce so changes in the GUI. IT does not seem to be radical modifications, but rather a new theme that will be unified to the system and all application running on it. So far we only know its name: "Marble".
This change is most likely restricted to the cosmetic point of view, and was a bit expected as Apple needs to justify visually some of the deep changes made internally in the system, the marketing team needs some material for the future campaign and does not want to only rely on the substantial performance gain brought by Snow Leopard.

Apple Starts Translating its Service Manuals
So far certified repair and maintenance centers were trained by Apple and receiving instructions and manuals in English. Those "service manuals or source manual describe how to identify, operate and perform repair procedures. Such documents are restricted to internal usage.
Apple recently changed its policy and just released service manuals localized in different languages, the first two samples are dedicated to the unibody MacBook and 15" MacBook Pro.
This is a good idea and will for sure make repair center's life easier for training their technicians and further increase their support centers, especially required with the increase of the Mac market and users.

Performance gain just amazed the audience with respectively 550 MB/s and 480 MB/S in reading and writing modes!
One will have to wait for the official availability of this product to perform a true test, as well as the required SATA III controller, as the current SATA II is not able to get such transfer speed on a single channel. This result demonstrates the huge potential and the rapid evolution of SSD when compared to plate-based HDs.

IDC: PC-Markt stagniert im vierten Quartal
Laut einer Studie von IDC ist das Wachstum des PC-Markts im vierten Quartal praktisch zum Erliegen gekommen. Die PC-Hersteller haben demnach zwischen Oktober und Dezember 2008 weltweit nur 0,4 Prozent mehr Computer verkauft als im Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres. Yet another line of SSD from OCZ
OCZ officially revealed a new range of SSD disks named Apex.
Thanks to a internal RAID 0, these disks will be capable of very large data flows, 230 MB/s for reading and 160 MB/s for writing. These discs will be proposed into 60,120 and 250 GB versions; their prices have not been shown yet. Note that the two other ranges, Vertex and Solid remain in the catalogue, Apex comes into play for the midranges. Of course, it will be necessary to await the first tests to have an idea of their performances. Indeed, their line entry suffers from an underpowered controller that gets quickly bogged down in the event of multiple requests. New breakdowns of a Seagate series of disks?
According to Tom's Hardware FR, Seagate is infected by an epidemic of breakdowns concerning its 7200.11 series of disks.
The breakdown are characterized by a sudden disappearance of the system disk, as if their electronics had burned. It is, in fact, a bug of their firmware which would lead the disk to be put into a mode of protection from which it cannot leave.
If the solution appears simple (i.e. an update the firmware) it cannot be applied once the disk has entered this mode, and Seagate still does not propose an update.
This brings back to mind the breakdowns with the series of 2.5" disks marked with famous firmware 7.0.1 which almost always ended up giving up the ghost after one year of use. There too, Seagate never communicated officially on this defect, preferring to play it deaf, a ploy in which Apple followed them.

Google and Seagate cut staff while Microsoft weighs options
We woke up this morning to find somebody other than Steve Jobs at the helm of Apple and Palm reigning supreme as the new darling of the tech industry. Unfortunately, it's not the tech bubble year of 1996 -- it's the recession plagued start to 2009. So it's no surprise to hear that Google, Seagate, and Microsoft are all looking to slash operating costs in a quest to remain buoyant. Google (yes, the invincible Google) just laid off 100 recruiters while announcing the closure of a few satellite engineering offices -- a move that will certainly see the loss of at least a few of the 70 or so affected engineers who are unwilling or unable to relocate. Two people who are familiar with Mr. Jobs’s current medical treatment said he was not suffering from a recurrence of cancer, but a condition that was preventing his body from absorbing food. Doctors have also advised him to cut down on stress, which may be making the problem worse, these people said.

Toshiba buy the hard disk activity of Fujitsu

It looks like Apple is pretty serious about keeping Hackintoshes off of the street (ever heard of Psystar?). According to his Twitter post, Wired reporter Brian X. Chen is revealing that Wired is getting sued by Cupertino for releasing a video on how to make a Hackintosh. That is a pretty bold move on Apple's part considering there are literally hundreds of sets of instructions out there on how to do this. Lifehacker alone seems to post a new one every week.

I am sure all of you saw my letter last week sharing something very personal with the Apple community. Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought.
In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June.

Toshiba said to be nearing deal to buy Fujitsu's hard drive business
Hitachi may be out of the picture (if it was ever actually in the picture to begin with), but it looks like Toshiba is now very close to buying Fujitsu's hard drive business in a deal that's reported to be worth between 30 and 40 billion yen, or anywhere from $335 to $447 million. I have said all along that Apple legally was not compelled to release any information about Jobs' health unless it had a material effect on his ability to run the company. It's a principle to which Apple has steadfastly clung, trying to draw a line between privacy and public relations, even at the expense of Apple investors clamoring for the company to do something to rescue them.

Man swipes prototype phones from Sony Ericsson, is caught
Details are still a bit fuzzy on this one, but reports out of Sweden say that a 35-year-old map swiped a batch of prototype phones from Sony Ericsson's Lund offices on Monday or Tuesday and was then promptly arrested on Wedneday after police discovered the prototypes, along with a hundred other phones, at his home. According to Sony Ericsson, the man was not an employee but had a "working relationship" with the company, and apparently used a pass card to gain entry to the building.
