LG tries to creep you out with phone that feels like human skin

It's not often we see a cellphone that we're actually a little hesitant to pick up, but LG has managed to pull off that considerable feat with its new LG-SH240 slider, which boasts the rather unique characteristic of a keypad that purportedly feels like real human skin. If that hasn't swayed you away from it, you can also expect the phone to pack a 2 megapixel camera, 3G HSDPA connectivity, and built-in Bluetooth, among other decidedly non-creepy features. Google wins big at Big Brothers Awards

That "distinction" punishes companies with a particular desire for control of individuals and intrusions into their privacy.
Google has won according to the jury for many things:
-- It does not have want to implement European law, preferring instead self-regulation, even if they refuse, for example, a person to have access to their own personal information and ask them to delete it.
-- Having agreed to put in place a screening so as not to displease the Chinese authorities. Google could also have censored its results in France and Germany since 2002.
-- They have also launched a campaign to collect DNA -- offering Internet users the opportunity to test their genome in order to uncover predisposition to certain diseases

Via war längere Zeit für ihre hochwertigen Mainboardchipsätze bekannt, die vor allem bei den AMD-Anhängern sehr begehrt waren. Das Soundsystem iPod Hi-Fi ist ja seit geraumer Zeit nicht mehr erhältlich. Optisch deutlich an die ausgelaufene Boombox aus dem Hause Apple angelehnt, aber gerade mal halb so teuer ist die BassStation von GEAR4.
Der schlichte schwarz-weiße Klotz bringt mit Hilfe eines integrierten 12 Zentimeter-Subwoofers bei einer Gesamtmusikleistung von 35 Watt ordentlich Wumms aufs Parkett. Die BassStation ist kompatibel mit allen iPods mit Dockanschluss und verfügt zudem über einen Aux-Eingang. Censorship for fun and profit: Boston talk show host gets bleeped for Sirius / XM mention

There's no telling where in the command chain this came from, but Boston talk show host Howie Carr got censored yesterday afternoon for uttering those nastiest of words: Sirius and XM. He was reading off yesterday's news about the DoJ's approval of the merger when his producer blanked out his mention of the two companies involved. Howie's station, WRKO, is owned by Entercom, a major competitor of Clear Channel -- who of course has its own opinions on censorship.

NASA won't dampen exploratory spirit of Mars rovers

NVIDIA's 9800 GX2-based Quad SLI solution gets mixed reviews

NVIDIA's high-end GeForce 9800 GX2 graphics card has been pretty well received on its own, but it looks to be decidedly more of a mixed bag when it comes to a Quad SLI configuration, at least according to a pair of early reviews. iPhone effect crashes on smartphone makers
Smartphone manufacturers have caught the bug, exploring Innovative new technologies and touch screens as they attempt to secure their slice of the market against Apple’s iPhone, at least, that’s what the analysts think is going down.
ABI Research calls the wave of invention that’s breaking across the smartphone industry the ‘iPhone effect’. Essentially, Apple’s high-tech foray into the market is forcing existing incumbents to play catch-up to remain competitive.

Sony's image takes another fall
In recent years, Sony has taken some disastrous blows in terms of image.
We all remember Rootkit installing without the knowledge of customers to prevent them from copying their CDs, and we all know their unrelenting pro-DRM stance. A new case has arisen, seemingly less serious but potentially just as damaging.
Mac-users may not be as familiar with this notion - our machines come installed with just OS X and iLife - but Windows-users know the problem of pre-installed commercial applications all too well. This software is more or less invasive, is rarely useful, and it is very difficult to get rid of.
The publishers of these programs pay computer manufacturers to load their software on new machines. This helps to reduce the final price, which explains why all manufacturers are eager to do so. Google will not be a mobile phone operator in the USA
The auction of frequencies around 700 MHz ended last week in the USA.
Google did not succeed in catching a slice of the coveted frequencies that would have allowed them to become mobile phone operators. It should be said that the installed operators did everything to bar the road to them. Never has such an auction raised so much, nearly 19.6 billion dollars.
In a way, Google has nevertheless a half victory since it forced the telephone operators such as AT&T to invest much more than necessary, certainly this will weaken them a bit.
In France we are always waiting to know if there will be a fourth mobile telephone operator. The European Union is in favour of this initiative, since there is little competition in the French market and the average price of subscriptions is much more expensive than other countries.

Marc DeBevoise, SVP of business development and strategy confirmed the move in a panel discussion at the Future of Television West conference last night. He promised to make four cult Manga anime classics available through iTunes, including the ground-breaking ‘Ghost In the Shell’.

Asus stuffing resistive touchscreens into next-gen Eee PCs?

We have some major doubts about this one, since Asus officially shut down those Eee PC touchscreen rumors a while back, and DigiTimes has been pretty far off in the past, but apparently the new word on the street is that Asus actually is building resistive touch into at least a some of its upcoming next-generation Eee PCs. Citing "sources at touch screen panel makers," the technology is supposedly more mature than capacitive touch screens at this size, and will cost Asus about $10 extra per laptop. We still don't see the point, but it looks like you dreamers can keep on dreaming for the time being.

Safari für Windows mit Sicherheitslücken

DRM für Weblinks? Google weiter skeptisch
Im November des vergangenen Jahres hatte ein Zusammenschluss von Verlegerverbänden das Automated Content Access Protocol (ACAP) vorgestellt, mit dem Website-Betreiber mehr Kontrolle darüber bekommen sollen, wie Suchmaschinen auf Inhalte der Website zugreifen. Streit wegen Apple-Display beigelegt
Wie viele der Klagen, die gegen große Unternehmen wie Apple geführt werden, endete auch diese Ende letzter Woche mit einem außergerichtlichen Vergleich: Im Juli vergangenen Jahres hatten zwei Fotografen eine Sammelklage wegen irreführender Werbung im Zusammenhang mit den von Apple verbauten Displays eingereicht. Da sich jedoch keine weiteren Personen fanden, die sich von Apple getäuscht fühlten, konnte die Klage nicht weiter verfolgt werden. Apples Anwälte meldeten nun die Beilegung des Streits.

Intel's Netbook revealed as FTEC SmartBook, mystery solved

Finally, the Intel Netbook mystery is solved with the official unveiling of the 7- and 9-inch low-enders in Malaysia. The ruggedized laptops for kids (at least, initially) is manufactured by Malaysia's own FTEC and will carry a SmartBook moniker. The term "netbook" is generic, Intel-speak for highly-portable, Internet-centric laptops which Intel plans to target at young children, first-time buyers, seniors and housewives. Nachdem der Mac mini entgegen vieler Erwartungen doch nicht eingestellt wird, gibt es seit heute neues Zubehör für den kleinen Racker. Der Hardware- und Zubehörhersteller Sonnett aus Kalifornien hat den MacCuff mini im Angebot. Es handelt sich hierbei um einen Rahmen, mit dem sich der Mac mini etwa an der Rückseite eines LCD-Bildschirms befestigen lässt.

John Mayer schickt kreative Fehlermeldung an Apple
Das kann jedem mal passieren: Man verbindet den iPod mit dem Mac und irgendwas hakt. iTunes verweigert die weitere Teilnahme am Geschehen und der äußerst seltene Crash-Dialog erscheint. Der Musiker und Apple-Freund John Mayer entschied sich in so einer Situation ausnahmsweise mal für den blauen "Report"-Knopf und schrieb einen kleinen Brief an die Mitarbeiter in Cupertino.

Wer viel englische Texte schreibt oder übersetzt muss immer wieder einmal im Wörterbuch nachschlagen, um den passenden Begriff zu finden. Praktisch ist dabei das Online-Wörterbuch dict.cc, das von Benutzern für Benutzer geschaffen und gepflegt wird. Weil dieses aber nur per Internet zu erreichen ist, schuf Entwickler Lipflip alias Philipp Brauner jetzt für das Lexikon von Mac OS X 10.5 eine Offline-Version des kompletten dict.cc Deutsch-Englisch Übersetzungsvokabulars.

Musik-Flatrate für den iPod von Sony
Seit der Einführung des MP3-Formates und den damit verbundenen Möglichkeiten, digitale Musik im Internet zu beziehen befindet sich die CD in der Krise. Der gute alte Tonträger hat zwar noch nicht ganz ausgedient, aber jedes Jahr wieder beklagen sich die großen Labels über einen rückläufigen Umsatz. Digitimes says that in the second-quarter 2008 (within weeks to months) ASUS will be releasing EeePCs with resistive touch panels. This contrasts with the more acurate capacitive touch screen technology that is employed in the iPod Touch and iPhone. The difference to the user is that resistive touch works with styli while capacitive touch uses the natural capasitance of the finger to pinpoint location. Because the resistive touch screen is a more mature technology, the prices in bulk for the addition of this technology will approach only $10 per device. Forscher der kalifornischen Stanford University wollen mit einer Multiblendenkamera die Fotografie revolutionieren. Mac OS X feiert seinen 7. Geburstag
"Cupertino, California - 21. März 2001 - Apple hat heute bekanntgegeben, dass ab diesem Samstag, dem 24. März, Kunden aus der ganzen Welt Mac OS X im Einzelhandel erwerben können." Mit diesem Satz begann Apple die Pressemeldung, die vor sieben Jahren aller Welt den Start des neuen Apple-Betriebssystems ankündigte. Wohlgemerkt - es war keine neue Systemversion, sondern ein komplett neues Betriebssystem. Nach zahlreichen Verschiebungen des Veröffentlichungstermins hatte das Warten auf Mac OS X ein Ende und aus "Rhapsody" wurde schließlich doch noch ein Produkt.

Kevin Rose von Digg will erfahren haben, dass das kommende iPhone, welches er in den nächsten Monaten erwartet, mit einer neuen Kamera zur Videochat-Funktion ausgestattet sein wird. Bain Capital steigt aus 3Com-Übernahme aus
Die Übernahme des US-Technologieunternehmens 3Com durch Huawei und Bain Capital ist endgültig geplatzt. Bereits im Februar sahen sich die beiden Interessenten mit Sicherheitsbedenken der USA konfrontiert und zogen daraufhin einen Antrag an das Committee of Foreign Investment in the US (CFIUS) zurück. Update: iPod shuffle Reset Utility in Version 1.0.3
Regelmäßig tauchen im iFUN-Forum fragen wie diese auf: iPod blinkt orange/grün, wie beheben?. Abhilfe schafft in solch einem Fall meist das vor einem Jahr vorgestellte iPod shuffle Reset Utility, indem es den iPod komplett auf die Werkseinstellungen zurücksetzt.
Das kleine Hilfsprogramm ist jetzt in Version 1.0.3 verfügbar. Die neueste Aktualisierung dürfte allerdings lediglich für Kompatibilität mit den relativ neuen 2 GB-Modellen von Apples kleinstem iPod sorgen.

Ubuntu 8.04 als Beta-Version
Die kommende Ubuntu-Version 8.04 hat jetzt die Beta-Phase erreicht. Sony BMG launching (DRM-free?) subscription music service this year

Towards a new Mac mini?
According to Apple Insider, the Mac mini has been moved to EOL status ("End of Life"), so we should expect new models soon.
This popular products for Mac users, but financially not interesting for Apple, might finally evolved and receive new Penryn processors (up to 2.1GHz) as well as the "old new" shared memory graphic chipset GMA X3100. We could also expect the Mac mini to support WiFi 802.11n, it could be a good marketing point for Apple to claim to have all its hardware models supporting the new wireless format.
We should expect the price of the new Mac mini to drop significantly according to the new price policy from Apple Europe.

Fujitsu: 320GB at 7200rpm in 2.5" Format
Fujitsu announced the future availability in June of a 2.5" HD spinning at 7200rpm and offering 320GB of storage space.
The MHZ2 BJ will drain 2.3W, less than competitors models, while featuring 16MB of cache and a SATA II format. Last but not least, thanks to its 9.5mm thickness, it should easily find its way in all MacBooks.
The market for mobile plate-based HD is really active over the last few months, for two main reasons: sales of mobile computers keep growing up and SSD appeared as a possible solution, even though it remains very expensive.

Laser Diodes: Investigation for Patent Infringement in USA
The U.S. International Trade Commission announced to have launched an investigation on certain laser and short-wavelength light emitting diodes for potential patent infringement. Among the 30 respondents in this investigation, many companies are well known in the field of red and blue laser-based devices dedicated to pro and consumer markets: Sony, LG, Hitachi, Panasonic, Samsung.
This investigation was launched following complaint filed by Gertrude Neumark Rothschild of Hartsdale, NY, on February 20, 2008, for patent infringement (only limited to the US market). The solutions should be found quickly within the next two months, and as usual is such case, it is all about money, either someone trying to get money with a broad claims owned patent, or companies that on purpose decided to ignore an intellectual property when developing a product.

Neue Version des iPod shuffle Reset Utilities veröffentlicht
Der Kleinste unter den iPods zeichnet sich nicht nur durch seine Größe aus, sondern besitzt auch als einziges iPod-Modell kein Display. Streikt das Gerät dann einmal, lässt sich nur schwer nachvollziehen, woran es liegen könnte. Und manchmal wird der iPod shuffle nicht einmal mehr vom Rechner akzeptiert. Die vertreiben hochfrequente Klingeltöne, die von den meisten Erwachsenen nicht gehört werden können - aber darum geht es nicht: Der Clou ist die Art und Weise wie die Klingeltöne vertrieben werden, nämlich ganz simpel als Podcast. Apple has just released a small update of its utility for reinitializing the iPod shuffle (version 1.0.3 3.6 MB) by default with iTunes. This restores the factory parameters for the 1st and 2nd generation models.

Use iPod Reset Utility to restore the following iPod models back to their factory settings, when iTunes is unable to do so:

Spielen wie anno 1987 auf dem Mac: Stunt Copter 1.1.0 ist eine originalgetreue Umsetzung des alten Mac-Spiels. Ein Männchen muss, am Hubschrauber baumelnd, über dem Heuwagen abgesetzt werden. Shuttle's Linux-based KPC desktop gets reviewed

It's not often we see a desktop surrounded by hordes of folks just waiting for reviews in order to pull the trigger (or not), but Shuttle's Foresight Linux-based KPC is one of those machines. The Celeron 430-powered box actually managed to hold its own, and oftentimes best, an overclocked 3.2GHz Pentium 4 rig in a number of everyday tasks (read: Office use, web browsing, etc.), and of course, accessing the internals in order to load in upgrades of your own was a lesson in simplicity.
