Pranksters invade Starbucks with desktop computers

We've already seen the confusion and hilarity some so-called "portable" computers can cause when taken out into public, but those shenanigans are nothing compared to the scene stirred up when the folks from Improv Everwhere lugged some ancient desktop computers (replete with CRT monitors) into a Starbucks. As you can see in the video after the break, they surprisingly weren't kicked out, but they did manage to attract a fair bit of attention, including from a few folks that thought the computers were set up for public use. Neues Recyclingprogramm Apples für Handys
Nachdem Umweltaktivisten um Greenpeace im vergangenen Jahr deutlichen Druck auf Apple ausgeübt hatten, änderte sich langsam etwas in der Firmenpolitik des Mac-Herstellers in Sachen Umweltschutz. Um der Forderung nach einem "Greener Apple" nachzukommen, startete Apple nun in den USA ein Rücksendeprogramm für iPods und Mobiltelefone. Das in den Vereinigten Staaten größtenteils auf freiwilliger Basis betriebene Angebot ergänzt das Rücksendeprogramm für iPods nun auch um Mobiltelefone aller Hersteller, solange man ein entsprechendes Gerät bei Apple erworben hat.

Acer set to launch Blu-ray-equipped 16-, 18.4-inch laptops

Our tip jar, it brings us so much joy -- and it brings you, dear reader, this printout of what's purported to be the Best Buy database listing for one of those heretofore-unknown MacBook model numbers. You'll note that whatever MB402LL/A turns out to be, it's said to be in stock on March 2nd, which is just a few days away -- but also note that current MacBook Pros have MA-series model numbers, while the regular MacBook has traditionally carried the MB designation. Hynix gets official with MetaSDRAM-based 8GB DDR2 RDIMM

Solar-powered dragonfly throws ball back in WowWee's court

Make no mistake, our hearts were fluttering when we finally witnessed WowWee's FlyTech Dragonfly buzzing about, but there's just something about this creature that really wins us over. Designed and constructed by James G. Watt, this robotic insect reportedly includes a number of solar cells which provide enough power in sunlight to make the critter's wings flap. Hollywood backs Blu-ray
Since the end of last week, and without any surprise following the withdrawal of Toshiba from the race, the 6 Hollywood majors are now behind the Blu-ray format. Paramount, which had caused a sensation by announcing its exclusive support to HD-DVD (for $ 150 million, shared with Dreamworks), has been the last to takthe leap and certainly one that will have the most to lose.
The balance seems to be swinging in France too, where we start to find HD-DVD players below 100. This is not the same for movies which the majors do not want to let go on the cheap. This will certainly happen later in brokers' stores, far away from the eyes of the consumers.

Spieletest: NFL Tour - Football für Anspruchslose
Seit einigen Jahren schon liefert EA mit taktisch zwar abgespeckten, dafür aber in Sachen Rahmenprogramm und Aktionsmöglichkeiten recht unterhaltsamen Sportspielen aus der Street-Reihe ein angenehmes Konkurrenzprogramm zum Realismus der eigenen Sportsimulationen. Die NFL-Street-Titel waren da ein gutes Beispiel, das EA jetzt allerdings eingestampft, durch den uninspirierten Nachfolger NFL Tour ersetzt und sich damit dann auch gleich sämtlichen Spielspaß gespart hat. Bowers & Wilkins wird demnächst das in den USA eingeführte Lautsprechersystem Zeppelin auch hierzulande auf den Markt bringen. Ab dem 11. März ist das Audiosystem für 598,90 Euro in den Gravis-Läden erhältlich. Es ist nicht nur zu allen Ipod-Modellen kompatibel, sondern kann über eine 3,5 Millimeter-Aux-Schnittstelle auch an andere Player und an PC-Systeme angeschlossen werden.

IDL Motors' linear propulsion system gets demonstrated

USA umgibt sich mit virtuellem Hi-Tech-Zaun
Mauer war gestern. Heute schützt man Grenzen mit virtuellen Zäunen. Einen solchen wollen die USA an der Grenze zu Mexiko in einigen Teilen der Staaten Arizona und Texas errichten. Der Hi-Tech-Zaun - im Regierungsjargon Project 28 genannt - besteht aus etwa 30 Meter hohen unbemannten Wachtürmen, die mit leistungsfähiger Überwachungstechnik gespickt sind. Trotz Drahtlostechnologie wuseln auf den Mac-Schreibtischen noch die Kabel wie zu Zeiten alter Heimcomputer. RAID 0 in a Mac Pro
In today's computers with multiple processors and ever greater quantities of memory, the hard drive becomes an increasingly important bottleneck. It may be tempting, therefore, to combine the performance of multiple disks as we do CPUs to improve the overall performance of the machine. By default, the Mac Pro supports software RAID 0. It is a protocol in which the machine will distribute the writes simultaneously, and reads simultaneously on multiple drives in order to accelerate IO (striping).
We have tested with the fastest hard disk at this time, the Samsung Spinpoint F1 with 32 MB cache. Our tests showed that this disc, without Raid, is capable of reaching sustained speeds of 105 MB / s for reading and 96 MB / s for writing (excluding cache), which is well above what other currently marketed SATA disks can achieve.
To highlight the disk performance, we used the SpeedTools Utilities and its software QuickBench 4, which has the merit of providing reliable and reproducible results.

Kommt das iPhone-SDK später?
Für Februar 2008 wurde ein Software-Development-Kit (SDK) für das iPhone und den iPod touch angekündigt. Bisher wurde dieses aber nicht veröffentlicht und alles deutet darauf hin, dass Apple den Termin nicht wird einhalten können. Voraussichtlich wird das SDK erst im März 2008 zur Verfügung stehen. Firefox in Deutschland besonders erfolgreich

Offener Brief an Steve Jobs
Autor Thomas Zaugg vom "Magazin" hat einen augenzwinkernden offenen Brief an Steve Jobs verfasst, in dem er sich fragt, wann Apple das iPhone endlich in die Schweiz bringt. Grundlage für die Aktion des "wütenden" Autoren ist dessen Annahme, dass wohl auch am 29. Februar kein Schweizer Kooperation für das iPhone vorgestellt werden wird.

MacBook Air ineffizient gebaut
Japanische Ingenieure von der Nikkei Electronics Teardown Squad haben das MacBook Air auseinandergenommen und danach wohl eine ganze Menge Schrauben in der Schale gehabt. Über dreißig Schrauben würden alleine die Tastatur sichern, was sicherlich reduziert werden und sich damit auch auf die Kosten auswirken könnte (und das nicht durch geringere Materialkosten).

Internet Explorer 8: Beta-Version ist fertig
An interne Tester verteilt Microsoft die Beta 1 vom Internet Explorer 8. Damit erhalten Entwickler Zugriff auf eine Vorabversion des kommenden Microsoft-Browsers und können diesen testen. Low stocks of MacBooks
For some unknown reason that maybe could be a sign of imminent renewal - the stocks of MacBooks have fallen to their lowest.
Tech Data, one of the two wholesalers charged to provide the retailers that do not pass via Apple do not have any model in stock, and this is quite exceptional.
However stocks of the MacBook Pro remain in good supply, which may explain the delay that Apple has taken to evolve this range.

Adobe veröffentlicht AIR 1.0 und Flex 3
Mit AIR 1.0 und Flex 3.0 hat Adobe seine neue Plattform für so genannte Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) veröffentlicht. Dabei handelt es sich um Webapplikationen, die Techniken wie HTML, CSS, JavaScript und Flash nutzen, aber statt im Browser in einer eigenen Runtime-Umgebung auf dem Desktop ablaufen und so die Vorteile von Web- und Desktop-Applikationen kombinieren sollen. iMacs to recieve processor upgrades along with new Macbook Pros?
MacBook Pros are due for an update, we know this. If not this Tuesday, then likely at the mid-March event. By the way, if Apple releases the MacBook Pros before the event, you'll know they are mostly just a Processor/keyboard/trackpad update. If Apple waits until the event, we are likely to see a full overhaul of the design. We hope we have to wait.
But those Penryn chips that are going into the MacBook Pros are also the same class of processors that Apple puts in the iMacs. Could the iMac be the benefactor of new processor (and front side bus) upgrades? We'd say it is pretty likely.
Also, why are Apple's laptops the only benfactor of the multi-touch trackpads? Can we get a multi-touch trackpad for iM

GSM-R-Netz der Bahn wird um 7.000 Kilometer ausgebaut
Die Deutsche Bahn hat Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) den Auftrag erteilt, nach dem das GSM-R basierende Mobilfunksystem der Bahn auf weiteren 7.000 Kilometern entlang von Personenzugstrecken ausgebaut werden soll. Damit soll die Sicherheit erhöht und die Betriebskosten gesenkt werden, teilte NSN mit.

Fujitsu MHZ2 BT: the latest 500GB 2.5-inch laptop drive

Solid state is still what gets our motors purring, but 500GB of storage in your laptop isn't anything to scoff at, either. Fujitsu's new MHZ2 BT is the second drive to hit the half-terabyte mark, but just like the Hitachi 500 gigger it's a non-standard height (12.5mm), meaning you won't be able to slap it in most laptops or enclosures --unless you're willing to shave out an extra ~3mm of surrounding matter. Expect 'em out in May.

Apple event postponed until Mid March
It looks like the Apple event originally scheduled for February 26th has been postponed until mid-Marchish. Apple would have made the decision last week because they usually allow a journalists a week to arrange travel to the evnt. The reason for the delay is likely that the SDK isn't ready for primetime and the developer apps aren't polished enough to be shown.
Apple has introduced something on just about every Tuesday in 2008 so far so we still are likely to see a new release of some sort - MacBook Pros seem like the most likely candidates. There are still lots of things that could be released at any moment including:

More iPhone areas (Italy, Austria, Spain)

Achillesverse in FileVault?
Das fragt sich u.a. die britische Macworld, nachdem es letzten Freitag einigen Hackern geglückt war, in Apples an sich sicheres FileVault einzudringen. FileVault ist eine Datenverschlüsselung, die es eigentlich Angreifern unmöglich machen soll, auf Dateien des jeweiligen Volumes zugreifen zu können.

Samsung P10 laptop battery "melts" in South Korea
Filed under: LaptopsMerely days after LG put the brakes on sales of its Z1-AE007 laptop due to suspicions of a faulty battery within, yet another lappie in South Korea is making headlines for its overheating, er, abilities. Reportedly, the battery in a P10 computer, produced in 2002, "melted" after inexplicably emitting smoke during use. The device managed to burn a bed and a certain part of the floor, but thankfully, no "big fire" was started. According to company spokesman James Chung, Samsung is now "checking details of the incident," but the actual manufacturer of said battery has yet to be revealed.
