Gesture-controlled robot is at your service

Tokyo University engineer Tsuyoshi Horo has developed a novel system for controlling robots (or in this case, a moving stool) using a simple set of hand and body gestures. The researcher is utilizing a circular array of cameras to track and detect body movement within a controlled environment, and then translate those movements to actions for an automaton. The cameras are used to create a real-time, 3D, volumetric model of objects or people in the space, which is then converted into a psychedelic stack of virtual cubes which are read and processed as data. Apple and Sony merger? Never in a million years!
Bloomberg published a story this weekend on how an Apple-Sony merger makes a lot of sense. It doesn't. Let's see if we can't break down each argument point by point:
adding insult to injury, Apple Inc. continues to hold the spotlight. It really is one of the great business stories of the past 50 years. Sony, the inventor of the Walkman, ceded its leadership in portable music players to Apple's iPod and continues to lose ground.
It really makes you wonder why Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs doesn't just buy Sony.
It can't. Sony is worth over $45 billion - about the same as Yahoo! which also isn't possible for Apple to purchase (and might make more sense).

Samsung shipping ultra-fast SATA II SSD drives in time for MacBook Pro rollout?
According to Macworld UK, Samsung is now shiping the fastest consumer SSD drives avalable to Dell. The 64Gb drives have a SATA II interface that can support data reading at speeds of 100M Bps (bytes per second) and writing at 80M Bps. That makes it 60 percent faster than SATA I drives of the same type and two to five times faster than conventional hard-disk drives, according to Samsung.
Yes, of course we are thinking MacBook Pros - which should be out before the end of the month. In case you are wondering how fast these things are, Ryan Block put one in his last generation MacBook Pro (below).

iPod Touch for Business? Orange UK thinks so.
Orange UK is offering a free 8GB iPod to business customers in the UK who sign up for their Orange Solo, Orange Venture or Orange Momentum small business mobile plans. Orange is competing with iPhone-carrying O2 in the UK small business space and offers the iPhone at its France Telecom division so it is an interesting decision.
Not many people consider the iPod Touch as being a business tool - though some do.

iPhone bands?
The idea of a band based on iPhones and Gameboys has probably come up often with all of the latest musical instruments available on hacked iPhones. We are huge fans of iAno and guitar.app. Gizmodo found an interesting little "iBand". While the idea is good, the implementation leaves more than a little bit to be desired. Advanced Multitouch Gesturing Control Panel in Mac OS X
Macrumors found a recent MacOSX gesturing control panel patent from an Apple employee (formerly of Fingerworks). As they say, this is pretty likely to show up in upcoming builds of OSX and new hardware like the MacBook Pros that should be announced by the end of the month.

Digitimes reporting on falling NAND Flash storage
Digitimes reports today on the state of falling NAND Flash prices. Specifically, the price of a 16Gbit MLC segment is expected to fall below $5 and continue dropping through the rest of the quarter.
This news has an effect on Apple in a few ways. First, the MacBook Air has a 64Gbyte NAND Flash hard drive option. If Digitimes is to be believed, the 64Gbytes of NAND Flash should cost about $200. Memory controllers and other parts of the drive cost more of course. Keep in mind that SSD Memory uses a high quality NAND memory with more read/writes than standard Flash Memory so prices may not directly correlate. If memory prices are falling across the board, Apple will likely be able to drop its (currently $1000) prices

iPod Shuffle gets a price cut. Other iPods wait.
The iPod Shuffle got cut from $79 to $49. Then the Apple Store went down. Will the rest of Apple's iPod line also recieve some price cuts? Flash prices are cheaper - so it makes sense. Stay tuned!

Apple updates Xsan
Along with today's server hardware announcement, Apple today also released XSAN 2, a totally revamped version of its high-performance shared disk file system for Mac OS X.
Xsan is an Apple branded version of Quantum's StorNext File System software with minor enhancements designed for Apple's Mac OS X operating system. Xsan enables the sharing of one or more Xserve RAID devices with multiple Xserve or Macintosh systems. Xsan will also work with third party fibre channel storage devices with limited support from Apple. With the Xsan file system installed, these computers can read and write to the same storage volume at the same time.

JBL wird bei uns ja normalerweise nur im Zusammenhang mit iPod-Soundsystemen erwähnt, bekannt wurde das Unternehmen allerdings mit Lautsprechersytemen für den Heim- und Veranstaltungsbereich. AT&T feels a little left out, launches unlimited plan, too
There's no telling whether Verizon's recent announcement had anything to do with it, but something lit a fire underneath AT&T today as they've announced an unlimited plan for the same $99 Verizon is charging (well, $99.99, if you want to get down to the nitty gritty). The plan will be available starting this Friday, February 22, and much like Verizon's setup, it only includes voice calling -- data and messaging will still require an additional package. One of the major new features in Leopard is taking remote control of another computer on your local area network, with the click of a mouse. This type of function is not a novelty as such, as there is plenty of software that allows this already, but the ease of Leopard's implementation is truly staggering.
Having said that, what we are offered standard from Apple is a lighter version of what, among other things, is Apple Remote Desktop. Some useful features are missing for example only being able to observe the screen controlled, blocking use of the mouse on the 'controlled' screen, etc.
But no, these functions are actually alive in Leopard's screen sharing and it is only the user interface that has been clamped.

Neue Methode zur Gewinnung von Wasserstoff
Wasserstoff gilt als der Energieträger der Zukunft. Er ist ergiebig und vor allem sehr sauber: Seine Abgase sind einfacher Wasserdampf. Paramount and Universal to publish films on Blu-ray

Apple updates Xsan
Along with today's server hardware announcement, Apple today also released XSAN 2, a totally revamped version of its high-performance shared disk file system for Mac OS X.
Xsan is an Apple branded version of Quantum's StorNext File System software with minor enhancements designed for Apple's Mac OS X operating system. Xsan enables the sharing of one or more Xserve RAID devices with multiple Xserve or Macintosh systems. Xsan will also work with third party fibre channel storage devices with limited support from Apple. With the Xsan file system installed, these computers can read and write to the same storage volume at the same time.

A petition against the 2008 MacPro that 'freeze'
Source : XLR8yourMacA number of Mac Pros, all fitted with the Radeon X2600 XT, suffer a similar problem to that seen by owners of the iMac alu - also fitted with the Radeon 2600.
At random times, the screen freezes and the machine grinds to stop making all work impossible.
The exchange of the graphic boards does not solve the problem in all cases, on this Apple has still to comment. None the last updates - eagerly awaited especially those that had some bearing on the graphic components - brought a solution or an improvement. Jetzt wagte das Unternehmen aus Cupertino einen für den Softwarebereich riesengroßen Update-Schritt auf Xsan 2, wie man heute in einer Pressemitteilung bekannt gab. SSD drives commercially available soon
While we often about SSD's (solid state disks), it is impossible to find them commercially available, except possibly in Japan.
Things could change soon. In fact, Samsung announced that it has started mass production. The first model that will be available will be a 64 GB formatted 2.5 " drive, with a SATA interface.
No way you can use this model in a MacBook Air, but those who may be tempted by this expensive product (its price is not yet known), will be able to install in their MacBook or MacBook Pro.
Its tantalizing performance, 100 MB/s reading and 80 MB/s writing might even encourage the more motivated to use two in a RAID configuration in a Mac Pro in order to have a boot disk with frightening performance.

Noch bevor der amerikanische Online-Store offline ging, konnte zumindest eine Änderung festgestellt werden: Apples kleinster iPod wird 30 US-Dollar billiger und kostet nun 49 US-Dollar. A 128 Gb 1.8" SSD
Source : MTRONMtron has announced that they'll start producing 128Gb 1.8" SSD's.
The announcement is still vague, but it appears that the drives will be equipped with MLC memory, assuring a speed of 100 Mb/s for reading, but only 40 Mb/s for writing. One should keep in mind that 1.8" drives are typically even slower than regular-sized drives.
When we want to know whether these drives will be supported by the MacBook Air, we need to know which interface they'll support (ZIF ATA for the MBA), their height (max 5mm for the MBA) and of course the price if we want Apple to support it as a BTO - this will probably be the biggest problem.

According to blu-ray.com Toshiba may announce later today that they're leaving HD-DVD. They'll stop producing HD-DVD players and the corresponding authoringsoftware immediately. The products will still be available in stores for a few weeks.

DoubleTwist: Freeware entfernt iTunes-DRM
Vorerst nur für Windows-Rechner verfügbar, sollte DoubleTwist in den kommenden Tagen auch für den MAC erhältlich sein. Das kostenlose Tool von Jon Lech Johansen kann eine ganze Menge (Filesharing, Social Networking, Videos und Musik abspielen, Handys mit iTunes synchronisieren ect.), doch wir konzentrieren uns im Folgenden nur auf eine Funktion: Die Entfernung des DRMs eurer im iTunes-Store erworbenen Songs.

Toshiba bestätigt das Ende von HD DVD
Nun ist es also - nach einigem hin und her - hochoffiziell: Toshiba bestätigte in einer Presseerklärung und auf einer extra kurzfristig einberufenen Pressekonferenz, dass die HD DVD in diesem Unternehmen keine Zukunft mehr habe. Damit erklärte nicht nur Toshiba das Format für beendet, es bedeutet auch das allgemeine endgültige Aus für HD DVD, da Toshiba derzeit de facto das einzige passende Standalone-Gerät dazu anbietet.

Toshiba: "no plans" to adopt Blu-ray
In the Q&A session following Toshiba's HD DVD dumping event in Japan, Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation made a bit of a surprise announcement. While it remains committed to standard DVD, they have "no plan at all at this moment" to take up the Blu-ray format. He also stated that Tosh has no plans for a next-next gen format at all. Digitimes reporting on falling NAND Flash storage
Digitimes reports today on the state of falling NAND Flash prices. Specifically the price of a 16Gbit MLC segment are expected to fall below $5 and continue dropping through the rest of the quarter.
This news has an effect on Apple in a few ways. First, the MacBook Air has a 64Gbyte NAND Flash hard drive option. If Digitimes is to be believed, the 64Gbytes of NAND Flash should cost about $200. Memory controllers and other parts of the drive cost more of course. Keep in mind that SSD Memory uses a high quality NAND memory with more read/writes than standard Flash Memory so prices may not directly correlate. If memory prices are falling across the board, Apple will likely be able to drop its (currently $1000) prices and/or order higher capacity drives (128GByte) in the coming months.

The "toy" is basically a talking computer with an RFID reader, that guides kids through different pre-loaded games or stories. Filed under: HandheldsDetails are pretty light on this one but, according to Crave, HP recently dropped word in an "informal chit-chat" that it is now prepping its very first UMPC, which apparently could hit the market as early as late spring of this year. Most interestingly, HP reportedly said that "you won't even need to consider this purchase," adding that, "you'll buy it like a handphone without a thought". What's more, HP also apparently boasted that one of the "key areas of improvement" would be in battery life, although unsurprisingly didn't get any more specific than that. Tiny Code not working with Apple, FW1.1.4, apologizes
In response to a large influx of feedback regarding Tiny Code's announcement last week, developer for the app KellyTM revealed that the statement was false. Last week, Tiny Code announced that they were officially working with Apple on making legit iPhone and iPod touch apps, using a copy of the yet-to-be-released software developer's kit. KellyTM
