EPI announces 19- and 22-inch Envision-branded monitors

EPI's Envision-branded monitors don't exactly do a whole lot to distinguish themselves from the pack, but the company sure is cranking 'em out these days, with it now adding two more reasonably-spec'd (and reasonably-priced) models to the lot. DNA "pistons" could power nanoscale robots

What happened to the MBU?
It has now been over two years since Apple has begun the transition from Power PC processors to Intel, which, it is fair to say, has become a huge success. This transition took place with an incredible simplicity, strongly supported by Rosetta and by the availability of compilers that have enabled developers to quickly offer native software. Of course, a huge propellant was the faily quick transition of Adobe CS.
The final component of that transition was the eagerly-awaited Microsoft Office 2008, which has now sold for over two weeks. Until the release of Office 2008, we had full confidence in the MBU (Macintosh Business Unit), which has operated at Microsoft for 11 years, doing an excellent job, we might add. Their Mac versions often surpass their Windows-counterparts, but it's difficult not to be disappointed Office 2008. Without wanting to throw too many stones, let's just say it disappoints.

The iPod does NOT disrupt PaceMakers
Last May, a study to measure the effect of electromagnetic waves generated by the iPod on PaceMakers caused quite a stir. Its findings showed that in 50% of cases, the player had disrupted the functioning of these devices, even causing total halt in operation in one patient. Of course, critics of Apple products are always quick to pull the trigger on reporting negative findings.
A new study done this time in-vitro brings totally contradictory results. None of 4 iPod models has been able to generate a magnetic field sufficient to disrupt the functioning of a PaceMaker to within 2.7 cm distance (just over 1 inch). The magnetic field generated has been shown to be less than that of the background noise generated by the pacemaker.
It will certainly prompt further studies to verify these results, but we wonder what intere

NVidia buys Ageia
Ageia is a small company founded in 2002 that has tried in recent years to wedge its PhysX chips in the realm of video games. The PhysX-friendly coding paired with their dedicated physics-processing PCI cards greatly improve the rendering of video games, producing very realistic, stimulating effects.
Even though intentions are good, there are only a few games on the PC have been optimized with PhysX coding. With only a few games optimized, few cards were sold, and thus, few developers were tempted to write with PhysX in mind.
NVidia has probably saved the company in deciding to purchase it. Eventually, one could find PhysX support in their graphics chips, which could entice developers to implement the technology. Last September, Intel had purchased Havok-developed solutions that rival those of Ageia.

Wireless chip-on-a-band-aid to monitor patients from home

UK startup Toumaz Technology is bringing band-aids into the 21st century with a new technology that can remotely monitor patients. The solution involves a custom mini-chip with a 5-7 day battery, with built-in 800-900MHz wireless and a price as low as $5 a pop when the disposable patch is released next year. The chip is designed to relay data from sensors such as electrocardiogram, a three-axis accelerometer, blood glucose, ph-level and blood pressure monitors. Samsung F1: The Best 1TB HD!?
First tests performed on PC were already indicating that the 1TB Samsung F1 was a fast HD and would not fear many competitors. This has now been confirmed on Mac too.
Xlr8yourmac published a comparison of the Samsung F1 vs. Hitachi model, both HD featuring 32MB of cache and 1TB of a storage space. The 1TB Western Digital Caviar was also included, however it has only 16MB of cache.
The Samsung F1 won all benchmark tests, in front of the WD Caviar, the Hitachi coming last, most probably due to its age, as it was the 1TB HD on the market.
As a summary, the Samsung F1 is definitely today the best OD for any users willing to get a 1TB storage space unit associated to high level performance. For higher performance level, one will have to choose the WD Raptor, however it will not be the same storage space capacity.

Wurde der Begriff "hacken" bis vor einiger Zeit noch mit verschrobenen Einzelgängern und ihren aufgemotzten Computern verbunden, ist das eigenständige modifizieren von Software heute fast salonfähig geworden. Wer kennt die Situation nicht: Man muss sich dringend etwas merken und schreibt es deswegen schnell auf einen Zettel. Nur wohin damit jetzt? Die Chancen stehen gut, dass man dieses Stück Papier niemals wieder sieht. E-Plus steigert Umsatz und Gewinn
E-Plus hat seinen Umsatz im vierten Quartal 2007 gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres um 1,7 Prozent von 747 auf 760 Millionen Euro gesteigert. Der Umsatz aus Mobilfunkdienstleistungen wuchs um 4,2 Prozent auf 721 Millionen Euro. Das gab das Unternehmen heute bekannt.

Dritte Firefox-3.0-Beta geht in die Testphase
Mozilla hat den Code der dritten Betaversion von Firefox 3.0 eingefroren und will am Montag mit der Testphase beginnen. Das berichten Macworld und Electronista. Auf die Uhr geschaut: Nikes Amp+ iPod-Fernbedienung
Nike vermarktet seine Amp+ als Armbanduhr und Fernbedienung, der unbedarfte Betrachter sieht allerdings wohl erst einmal nur ein breites schlichtes Armband. Die Uhrzeit wird per Knopfdruck recht abgefahren über versteckte, orangerote LEDs angezeigt. Dies bedeutet allerdings auch, dass Menschen, die alle fünf Minuten die aktuelle Uhrzeit brauchen, sich nach einer anderen Quelle für Zeitangaben umsehen sollten. Die Abfrage der aktuellen Uhrzeit dauert dadurch, dass das Display zuerst die Stunden und dann die Minuten anzeigt, etwa zwei Sekunden - also deutlich länger als der kurze Blick auf eine herkömmliche Armbanduhr.
Als Fernbedienung versteht sich Amp+ ausschließlich mit dem iPod nano. Hintergrund wie auch Voraussetzung für die Funktion ist da nur für dieses iPod-Modell erhältliche Nike+ Sport Kit, Amp+ soll die Bedienung des iPod beim Laufen erleichtern und unterstützt spezielle Funkionen des Laufkits wie etwa die akustische Ausgabe der aktuellen Laufdaten.

Gerücht: Neue Macbook Pros kommen

Intel opened its graphic chips to Open Source
Even though Intel does not manufacturer (yet) video cards, they are in first place concerning a graphic solution using a chipset such as the GMA950 or the GM X3100 that we have seen in certain Macs.
Intel has just published this documentation that allows developers in the 'free' world, led by Linux, to develop drivers that have better 2D and 3D support.
We assume that this has been motivated by at least two things:
- Intel has never been particularly strong with its video products. In this way it can use the development made by others to improve their product.

If this happen rarely, then it is not a problem, but if you have a portable to which to often connect a disk, it becomes annoying. To suppress this notification, all that is needed is to enter the following command in the terminal:

Mac-Beta: Youtube-Konverter Tubular
Tubular hatten wir am 15. Januar das erste mal in unseren Händen, die Mac-Software möchte eine All-In-One Suite für eure Youtube-Spielereien werden und verspricht neben der übersichtlichen Suche auf Youtube auch das problemlose herunterladen einzelner Videos und die automatische Konvertierung in ein iPod bzw. iPhone-kompatibles Video-Format. Jetzt gibt es die erste öffentliche Beta zum Download und wenn wir ehrlich sind, konnte Tubular uns noch nicht wirklich überzeugen.
Kostenlose Tools - auch für Windows - gibt es wie Sand am Meer und $20 sind uns zu viel für ein Feature das wir auch mit freien Firefox-Add-Ons realisieren können. Aber, wie auch immer. Tubular lässt sich nun hier herunterladen und ist sicherlich testenswert.

Motus Darwin controller to being that Wii feeling to the PC
Filed under: GamingWe've seen plenty of Wiimote hacks that involve interfacing the controller with a PC, and a ton of Wii KIRFs, but an outfit called Motus is aiming to bring it all together with a new controller called Darwin that the company says will bring motion control to the PC in a big way. Based on an existing Motus golf club controller called the iClub (very original, guys), the Darwin tracks motion using gyroscopes, accelerometers and a compass, which allows it to track absolute motion without the need for a sensor bar like the Wiimote. Knight Rider case mod does K.I.T.T. proud

1.600 MHz FSB für ältere Mainboards von Asus
Mit dem Core 2 Extreme QX9770 führt der Prozessor-Gigant Intel einen ersten Prozessor ein, welcher über einen 1.600 MHz (effektiv) schnellen Frontside-Bus verfügt. Während Intel die neuen Prozessoren lediglich für die Chipsätze der 4er-Serie freigibt, hat Asus auch einige „ältere“ Platinen für den schnelleren FSB fit gemacht.

Nvidia übernimmt PhysX-Entwickler Ageia
Nvidia verleibt sich Ageia ein - und verfügt damit nun über deren Physik-Engine PhysX und die zugehörigen Beschleunigungs-Chips. Damit kann Nvidia nun sicherstellen, dass auch das PhysX SDK in Zukunft die Rechenleistung der GeForce-Chips für Physik-Berechnungen nutzt - ähnlich wie es auch bei der Havok-Engine der Fall ist. Rettet Apple Yahoo vor Microsoft?
Jetzt wird es schwierig: Wie könnte ein fusionierter Konzern aus Apple und Yahoo heißen? Fest steht, dass Jerry Yang, Mitgründer und Chef von Yahoo, nicht unbedingt zu den glühendsten Verehrern Microsofts gehört und das Kaufangebot aus Redmond (44,6 Milliarden US-Dollar in Bar und in Aktien) daher nicht mit Begeisterung aufgenommen haben wird. Yahoo gilt seit längerem als Übernahmekandidat und hatte zuletzt mit einem sinkenden Marktanteil bei der Internet-Werbung und einer fehlenden klaren Linie bei den eigenen Angeboten zu kämpfen.

NVIDIA to acquire Ageia

Hotswap laptop batteries let you keep the juice flowing
Filed under: LaptopsSure, most laptops let you swap out a battery while the machine's asleep, but sometimes you need things to stay running while you switch out powerpacks -- which is where inventor Ric Richardson's hotswap batteries come into play. In addition to their traditional contacts, the cells have a small extension that plugs into your machine's power jack, allowing you to take out the dead battery and plug in the new one without having to shut down. It's a deceptively simple idea, but Richardson's got a patent on it, and he says he talking to various companies like HP and Lenovo about using it in consumer laptops. We're definitely intrigued -- but here's hoping there's a good way to stow that cable afterwards.
