Rock Band moshes over to Wii on June 22nd
Filed under: Gaming
Although PlayStation 2 / 3 and Xbox 360 owners have been living the dream for months, Wii owners can finally circle a date on their calender to undoubtedly be sick: June 22nd. As we expected, the title will indeed be adding Nintendo's darling to its tour 'round the consoles, but just like those pesky Ticketmaster fees, things aren't going to be all peaches and cream during the checkout process. For starters, Wii purchasers will be forced to swallow the "no downloadable content" and "no online multiplayer suppor

RED ONE camera gets wrangled into Super 8 telecine system
Filed under: Digital Cameras, Misc. Gadgets
As if the much-hyped RED ONE camera didn't have enough going for it already, it looks like it could soon be put to use for a slightly unexpected but most welcome task: capturing Super 8 film. That's apparently possible thanks to what's described as a "pre-prototype" rig that employs a RED ONE camera and a Moviestuff Workprinter XP system which, thanks to a direct interface to the RED's GPI input, should allow you to do up 30 single frame captures per second in the RED's 4K m

STMicro touts bird flu-detecting VereFlu "lab-on-a-chip"

Though the cases still use increasingly stale flip-style face covers, the lids and cases are very thin, use magnets to stay shut, and include separate screen,…

Acer's Eee competition to have lower price tag, more beautiful eyes
Filed under: LaptopsAccording to a report on the lately-talkative Acer, the company's first iteration of Eee PC-competition will be somewhat cheaper than ASUS' current (and future) sticker prices. In a scant article, speculation abounds that the first wave of Acer-made 8.9-inch laptops will be priced around $350 to $400, while ASUS will market its 8.9-inch micro-top for $50 to $100 more. Word on the street is that Acer will launch its cheapo solution sometime in May, but ASUS will preempt the introduction with

Intel's X48 chipset arrives on shelves, reminds users of the X38
Filed under: Desktops
For those of you looking to build your ultimate super fantasy dream system, the goal may have just gotten a little closer. According to some tipsters and the zany builders at Tom's Hardware, Intel's X48 chipset is on the street (and mobos) and just waiting to take your breath away maybe. According to Tom and co., the new configuration may not be that far of a cry from the previously released X38, adding only an improved northbridge and "official" support for FSB-1600 memory, though they note that this was technically available in the X38 as well. Tom runs the new entry through a battery of comparisons, so you can

Quanta is teaming with OoVoo to produce the Quanta Video Messenger -- a 1,280 x 720 pixel / 30fps, multi-point-capable set-top box that plugs directly into your HDTV and home Internet connection (presumably via Ethernet or 802.11n, they don't say). OoVoo is also looking to integrate its wares in existing set-top boxes. The prototype STB is the size of a hardback book and does not currently include a webcam or mic -- those must be plugged into the device separately. A big mistake if they take this model

Incredible! HD-DVD have disappeared
Over the years, we held our breath in the war HD-DVD against Blu-ray. A week did not pass without one of the camps making a ground breaking advertisement or announcing a new powerful product.
However after the HD-DVD camp threw in the towel, the disappearance of their products has been incredibly quick.
On the sites of the big retailers all reference to HD-DVDs have been cut from their catalogues and the term even banished from the search fields on their sites.
At this rate, in a week or two one would have the impression that Hd-DVD never existed.
For certain, one can still find the players at rock bottom prices at certain retailers, but the stocks melt in front of our eyes, a trend encouraged by these prices
Soon the only ones that will remember will be Toshiba who lost a billion dollars in this war, and those who bought a player but who will never own a collection.
The big distributers seem ready to put this nightmare behind them and put their power into selling the maxim

Apparently beyond about a mile from the base station non-line of sight performance was "non-existent", regular indoor use produced latencies as high as 1000ms even just 400m away, and the company had to scrap its network for TD-CDMA service on 1.9GHz just to make sure customers weren't completely left in the cold.
