Firewinder LED windmill, for the eco-friendly barbershop

We're all about the wind-powered LED rigs lately, but for some reason we're just not as captivated by the Firewinder LED windmill as we'd hoped to be. The vertical corkscrew features rows of white LEDs embedded in the blade's edge, which brighten as the winds blow harder, which is definitely a neat concept, but in execution it looks more or less like a super-high-tech barber pole -- a look we're not certain we're willing to drop £99 ($200) for. Problems with census PDAs could prompt a return to pencil and paper

Harris Corp. may have nothing but good things to say about the HTC-made PDAs it's planning to supply for use in the 2010 census, but it looks like the handhelds are already starting to cause plenty of headaches for census officials, who are reportedly even considering a return to pencil and paper if things can't be resolved. As the AP reports, the problems start with the contract for the devices, which originally clocked in at $596 million, has since grown to $647 million, and could eventually balloon to as much as $2 billion. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T300 gets reviewed

We briefly got our hands on Sony's DSC-T300 digital camera (along with a bevy of other Cyber-shots) back at PMA earlier this year, but the folks at Digital Photography Review have now come through with a thorough review of the camera which, among other things, is particularly notable for its use of touchscreen controls. Über Geschmack lässt sich bekanntlich streiten - aber auch über die Qualität eines Computerprogramms? Ganz offensichtlich ist dies zumindest bei Safari 3.1, dem von Apple kürzlich als schnellsten seiner Art vorgestellten Webbrowser, der Fall. Eingehende Mails machen sich durch ihren Signalton bemerkbar und müssen zur Einsicht dann doch extra in Mail geöffnet werden. Unlimited music seems very popular if we are to believe certain rumors.
Sony BMG is studying the possibility of offering a subscription plan for complete access to its full music catalogue. It's presumed that this service would be open to iPod owners in order to reach a greater market, and consequently reach greater success.
This rumor comes at heels of another one dropped last week:
Apple is currently negotiating with the major record labels to offer unlimited access to music via the iTunes Music Store for all iPod owners. This feature would be offered in exchange for a cut of Apple's profits on each iPod sold for as long as the iPod was sold. Of course, the negotiations would be tightened to fix the price of this fee, which would undoubtedly be passed on to the price of the PMP.

Some Mac Pro have been shipped with SuperDrive Optiarc AD-7170A loaded with the firmware 1.NC.
This drive has (for once) more capabilities than those listed by Apple: it can burn DVD at 18x, while Apple only states 16x. It can also burn DVD+RW at 8x, DL DVD at 8x and CD at 48x.

SSD in a MacBook Pro
The French website Présence PC published a test illustrating the performance gain obtained from a SSD vs. HD in a MacBook Pro.
They simply replaced the 2.5" HD by a 32GB 2.5" SSD. As a consequence, booting time and launching applications was much faster, as well as file duplication; however, the storage space was limited to only 32GB
Unfortunately, the impact of power consumption and saving battery working time was not analyzed in details. We are still waiting for Samsung or another manufacturer to send us a sample to perform such test (simply click on the author link).
Let's hope that 2.5" 128GB SSD will soon be both affordable and available.

3G iPhone enters manufacturing - ships soon?
Apple has instructed its manufacturers to produce ten million new model iPhones, equipped with 3G support, a report claims.
Interviewed by iPod Observer, Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney makes the claims, citing "sources in Asia". The analyst speculates the new model iPhone may feature and environmentally-friendly OLED display. As well as being a little more green-friendly, the display technology promises better battery life.
The news suggests Apple may introduce a new 3G iPhone within the first half of 2008, with strong signals suggesting the new breed will appear in June.

Fire at battery plant threatens global supply of exploding laptop batteries

The fallout of the March 3rd fire at LG Chem, the second biggest S. Korean manufacturer of laptop batteries, is now clear. There's a global shortage of batteries which won't be relieved until LG Chem can restart the assembly lines in another 2 to 3 months. Dell claims that the shortage has already caused an increase in price for secondary or replacement batteries. ASUS says that the shortage could affect up to 40% of ASUS' laptop shipments including the Eee PC. Bad news for us, good news for Samsung SDI and Sony in Japan as laptop OEMs look elsewhere for inventory.

Apple/Orange problems surface with purchases using the LOA option

Asus will market an Eee PC with a touch screen
Source : Digitimes Following the success of its Eee PC, Asus has decided to quickly evolve its Eee PC. Having announced models with larger screens, they have decided to market an Eee PC with a touch screen in the second trimester.
However, contary to the touch screen used in the iPod Touch and iPhone, this screen will use a resistive technology instead of capacitive. This technology is more adaptive to medium-sized screens.
The cost of such a screen will be about $10 extra.

Intel releases low power 4 core Xeon
Source : Intel Intel announces two newcomers in the Penryn Xeon 4 core series.
The L5400 and L5410 run at 2.33 and 2.5 GHz with a 1333 MHz bus have the luxury of only dissipating 50 W.
