Red Octane lets loose separate Wii Guitar Hero III controller

Helio continues to bleed money, now $560 million in the red

We'll be honest with you -- it's a bit disheartening to watch the (seemingly) inevitable happen to Helio. After all, it's managed to soldier on despite hordes of other MVNOs hanging it up here in the US of A. Nevertheless, data gleaned from EarthLink's most recent annual report shed some light on its deteriorating situation. Reportedly, Helio's net loss "widened by 41.3-percent to $326.6 million in 2007 compared to $191.8 million in 2006," yet revenues managed to grow 267-percent to $171 million from $46.6 million the year prior and subscriber growth rose 28-percent over last quarter to 180,000. Alcatel-Lucent sends data 1600 miles at 16.4Tbps

If you happen to own an iPhone, and you happen to have updated to the 1.1.4 firmware, you can now easily jailbreak, activate, and unlock your phone with a couple of simple solutions. As you may have heard, iNdependence 1.4 beta 5 is out, which will do all sorts of non-Apple approved things to your device from OS X, though if you're looking for the ultimate cross-platform solution, you probably can't do better than the latest version Zibri's all-in-one package, Ziphone 2.5. Time Capsule first impressions

Okay, so we've got our Time Capsule up and running here -- we'll be back with a full review once our full 516GB backup is completed, but here are some quick first impressions:
You can definitely hear the disks spin up and access. It also sounds like there's a fan in there, but there are no obvious vents for one and we can't feel any air coming out, so the drives might just be that loud.
The top is getting quite warm during the backup -- we'll see if it cools down once we stop hitting the drive this hard, but if there really isn't a fan we're a little concerned. Hope those server-grade hard drives like being cooked.

Apple to Control 3rd-Party iPhone Applications

iLounge was able to obtain information about the SDK iPhone, specifically on how Apple plans to implement software distribution:
-- Mandatory distribution (unsurprisingly) via iTunes and the iTunes Music Store, which will serve as a server.
-- Apple reserves the right (also no surprise) to accept or reject software, not only based on quality but also at their disgression.
-- The SDK will not allow (no surprise, once again) the interactivity with new devices like GPS, microphones, etc
In short, Apple is Apple. They announced the SDK under pressure due to the release of an unofficial version and the explosion of informal applications, but will ultimately continue to try to do what is natural in the corporate culture: maximize control of their dear product, the iPhone, even if only in their head.

Dreamworks Squirming out of its exclusive HD-DVD contract
Dreamworks who, among other things, produces the Shrek films, signed an exclusive HD-DVD contract at the same time as its parent company Paramount. While the latter has announced its move back to BluRay, Dreamworks seems unable to opt out so easily.
Pending discussions and an agreement with Toshiba, it will sever its contract, and abandon HD-DVD films. Given the already low share of HD-DVD media sales, the commercial impact would be relatively small. However, their image is damaged and the door is left open to competitors, meanwhile the security (or lack therof) of partnering with Paramont/Dreamworks will be another casualty of the format war.

Curved iMac concept bends beyond the realm of plausibility

ZDF will 2009 HDTV-Regelbetrieb vorbereiten

More out of our 8800GT overclock
After the first test of an overclocked 8800 GT, we decided to go further in our endeavors to reflash a 8800 GT.
Before continuing, we should warn you:
-- The overclocked card we have is not the one provided by Apple, but another PC-flashed card. It has a newer, more efficient heatpipe than Apple's card.
-- Though the overclock that we have achieved yesterday was relatively simple and rather dangerous, the technique we are proposing today would certainly not be supported by all cards.
This time, we have decided to go much further, and after verifying that the card was supported under Windows, we have pushed the GPU to 721 MHz, the ROPS to 1802 MHz and RAM to 2042 (2x1021) MHz.

Dell Continues on the DisplayPort Path

While Apple continues to stagnate with its range of aging monitors, Dell continues to renew its screens at high speed, not hesitating to add the last tiles or the latest connectivity.
After offering a 30" screen with a DisplayPort connector (in addition to the HDMI and DVI [HDCP compatable]), the manufacturer now offers the same thing on a screen 24".
Dell neither hesitates to smash prices. The 24" monitor costs $699, while the 30" is billed 1950.
It's not pleasant to admit, but buying an Apple display now is anything but sensible. They are certainly more beautiful than the competition, but they are expensive and are locked into dying technology. Meanwhile, the rest of the world begins to embrace HDMI connections and more HDCP compatibility.

Hidden in among Apple's chief operating officer Tim Cook's speech to the Goldman Sachs Technology Investment Symposium was a critical barometer of Apple's success - Apple beat Dell in laptop sales in the US higher education market,
While most reports focused on Cook's optimism as regards iPhone sales this year, the executive also told analysts: ""We just received word on Monday that Apple surpassed Dell as the number one supplier of portables to US higher education for 2007," Cook claimed.
"The ceiling for the Macs is nowhere in sight. Even if the market itself isn't growing, for us, switching Windows users is an enormous opportunity," Cook also added.
This is a critical metric for Apple, which once dominated computing on college campuses.

Inkel's MU-D e-dictionary longs to be a real tablet PC

Not like we expect anything earth-shattering to emerge from Inkel's South Korean laboratory or anything, but surely it could do better than this. The awkwardly named MU-D (it's for Multimedia Dictionary, supposedly) does manage to include a DMB TV tuner for keeping you busy when not defining your life, but the whole swivel screen approach just seems forced. Nevertheless, you will find a 4.3-inch 480 x 272 resolution panel, 4GB of internal storage, support for SDHC cards and an undisclosed price tag. Now, if only this thing could play Doom Portal.

Zwei deutsche Apple TV-Handbücher
Vorneweg: Der Download lohnt sich für Apple TV-Besitzer eigentlich nicht. In den Handbüchern ist nichts zu finden, was man nicht schon selbst herausgefunden hat, zudem liegt das kleine Büchlein fast unverändert schon der Urversion von Apple TV in gedruckter Form bei. Erwähnenswert ist vielleicht aber trotzdem, dass Apple momentan gleich zwei deutschsprachige Handbücher für Apple TV zum Download anbietet, die sich jedoch kaum unterscheiden. Die offensichtlich aktuellere Variante hat mit 44 zwar acht Seiten mehr als die zwei Tage ältere Version, kommt aber mit weniger Informationen. Das Kapitel zum Ausleihen von Filmen wurde gestrichen und die Thematik wird nur noch kurz in einer allgemeinen Einführung erwähnt - statt dessen wurden großzügig Leerseiten im PDF eingestreut.

CeBIT: Tool deckt Softwarediebstahl auf
Ein Wissenschaftlerteam vom Lehrstuhl für Softwaretechnik der Universität des Saarlandes hat eine Methode entwickelt, um Softwarediebstahl aufzudecken. Das Programm namens API Birthmark, das von David Schuler im Rahmen seiner Diplomarbeit federführend entwickelt wurde, untersucht dazu eine verdächtige Applikation auf Übereinstimmung mit dem Originalprogramm. Military Turing test to make autonomous war robots legal?

VLC Media Player 0.8.6e erschienen
Neben Apples QuickTime Player ist auch der VLC Media Player eine sehr nützliche und bekannte Abspielsoftware für Videos. Manchmal lassen sich mit ihm Dateien öffnen, bei denen QuickTime streikt. Source: MacNN If you had a MacBook Air in your hands, you will appreciate the hatch which seems to contain too few connectors. It allows Apple to move increasingly towards clean lines and edges which are as thin as possible.
They filed a patent on these ports which reveals some interesting things.
The ports were originally scheduled to be installed at the rear. But it is likely that this is a way for Apple to unveil fewer things on the patent.
Note especially that there is room for more ports than the (miserly) 3 on the MacBook Air.

Apple competes with Lamborghini
If the PC world finds Apple laptops too expensive, in particular the MacBook Pro, a test conducted by Xbitlabs makes that reputation seem unfounded.
They compared the 15" model running vista costing $2500, to the high-end star of ASUS, the very similar Lamborghini VX2S that costs more than $ 3000.
Both machines stand neck and neck in almost every test, Asus is actually in front most of the time by a few percent. But the Mac is back in front when it comes to 3D applications and is much better in the tests of autonomy giving half an hour to an hour longer depending on usage.
If we add the fact that it is more elegant and less expensive, and most importantly that this test was done by a PC site that may not be particularly favourable to Apple, we can conclude that the Apple is an excellent machine, currently without peer!.

Comparison of HD 2600 XT vs 8800 GT
Source: MacWorld Macworld compared the performance of two (generally available) video cards with Mac Pro Rev. 2, the Radeon 2600 HD XT and GeForce 8800 GT.
As you can see, the Radeon is far behind in DOOM 3 and Quake 4. It does better than the Geforce with Unreal Tourney, a game in which the renderering effects seem ancient today.
It is also noted that in the first two games, the performance of the Radeon collapses in the high resolution while those of the Geforce are constant.
These may be explained these simply enough:
-- The memory bandwidth of the Geforce is wider than the Radeon. It does not get filled up by the high resolutions (as tested).
-- NVidia GPU is also much more powerful, better supporting the complex effects -- which go wron

Changewave's latest report gives some very interesting numbers:
Apple is the number two manufacturer in the busines market already.
Apple leads the very satisfied category in their survey by double digit numbers and kills Palm and Windows Mobile devices.
While RIM currently is the market leader by huge numbers, it's recent outages and declining satisfaction ratings are leaving a big question mark in the business landscape - one that Apple is hoping to exploit.

Nach rund drei Jahren, in denen der Autokonzern alle 10 bis 12 Wochen eine Liste von MP3-Dateien kostenlos online zur Verfügung stellte, wurde der Service eingestellt - und kam jetzt wieder mit dem Mixed-Tape 19 zurück. Umbau drückt auf Dells Gewinn
Rund 16 Milliarden US-Dollar Umsatz erzielte Dell im vierten Quartal 2008, rund 10 Prozent mehr als noch ein Jahr zuvor. New information on the next mobile platform of Intel, the Centrino 2 (ex Montevina) have been published. Here is a list of processors that will be available:
All these processors can be put into Apple portables. One could have MacBook Pros that reach a maximum of 2.8 GHz.
We recall that the CPU are of the type Penryn just like those recently released, and it is only the bus frequency that will rise to 1066 MHz compared to 800 MHz available today. Also with the arrival of DDR3 the data flow will rise for a lower power consumption.

Letzte Nacht veröffentlichte Apple ohne großes Tamtam ein Update für die Fotoverwaltungssoftware iPhoto. Statt der üblichen "Problembehebungen" als Begründung für Version 7.1.3 wurde der Hersteller aber diesmal richtiggehend konkret und nannte Probleme mit Wire-O-gebundenen (auch bekannt als Drahtbandbindung) Alben und Fehler bei Karten als Grund.

Okay, try not to let your mind get blown by the possible time-space paradox we're about to illustrate, but MSI's supposedly introducing a new ECOlution motherboard at CeBIT with an "air powered cooler" that transforms the thermal output of its chipset into the kinetic energy necessary to power that same chipset's fan. Of course, as the fan cools the heatsink it deprives itself of energy, supposedly the piston affixed to the crankshaft pulls back down, giving it another potential surge when its heat rebuilds.

Apple MacBook Pro Penryn tests: a little more speed, a lot less heat

Sure, more speed is great, but on OS X most bumps don't have an appreciable effect on everyday work (unless all you're doing is video encoding). We were more interested in what Intel's Penryn processors can do for the MBP's heat envelope, so we maxed out both CPU cores in this brand new machine at let 'em crank for a half an hour.
