AVM: Neue Firmware, neue Features
Im vergangenen Monat hat AVM für seine neuesten Produkte der FRITZ!Box-Familien zahlreiche interessante, experimentelle Updates im FRITZ!-Labor veröffentlicht, die insbesondere Besitzer der 7270 und 7170 freuen dürften. Ziphone 2.5 available
A version of Ziphone, the software to Jailbreak and desim/unlock the iPhone is now available in a version that has specifically validated to work with firmware 1.1.4.
It is strongly advised to restore to version 1.1.4 instead of just updating to 1.1.4 before installing Ziphone.

Samsung execs called for questioning in continuing corruption probe

GadgetsWe haven't heard too much lately about the South Korean government's probe into the Samsung Group's alleged corruption and influence in the government, but the AP is now reporting those bribes were emanating from a $213 million slush fund the company supposedly set for use in swaying government officials. Letzte Chance: Duracell verlost iPod Hi-Fi
Apples verhaltener Ausflug in die Welt der Soundsysteme iPod Hi-Fi wurde im September letzten Jahres still und leise beendet. Seither findet man das ursprünglich 359 Euro teure iPod-Dock höchstens noch bei eBay. Da überrascht es doch, dass Duracell plötzlich neben diversen iTunes-Songgutscheinen und iPods auch fünf Mal das iPod Hi-Fi verlost (ja fünf, auf der Aktionsseite steht zwar "10", in den Teilnahmebedingungen ist allerdings von 5 iPod 30 GB + 5 iPod Hi-Fi die Rede). Apple has put online several technical notes in English on the Time Capsule
Setting up Time Capsule for the first time
Backing up with Time Capsule for the first time
Time Capsule: Initial backup is interrupted
Restoring files from a Time Capsule backup
We learn that it is very compatible with Time Machine, and the first back up can be extremely long. Following back ups, being incremental, will be more rapid.
Apple gives some advice:
- Never interupt the first back up; if you do - you must start again from scratch.
- For the first back up : have the computer connected via AirPort as close to the base station as possible - or better - use Ethernet.

EU now formally opposed to TomTom / Tele Atlas deal
Filed under: GPSReuters is reporting that the European Commission, apparently having completed is inquiry into the $4.2b acquisition offer TomTom made Tele Atlas last year, is apparently issuing a "statement of objections." Apparently it's not a flat-out rejection / do not pass go / do not collect $200, but now TomTom has until May 5th to work on resolving the issues the EU's presented before it can get the thumbs up to make its big buy.

i-mate's US outpost implodes, most laid off

We've caught wind from a number of employees -- or ex-employees, as the case may be -- that i-mate's US division in Redmond, Washington has all but disintegrated after a Friday bloodbath that saw the entire engineering, QA, and tech writing departments laid off, among others. Several honchos who weren't cut left anyway, perhaps unwilling to work in a ghost town or as a show of solidarity to their fallen brethren; notably, the Chief Software Officer and VP of Sales and Marketing are both gone, leaving a sales director to be promoted to the lofty title of GM of what seems to be all US operations.

Time Capsules uses regular Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 HDD
So, when Apple say that Time Capsule uses a
massive 500GB or 1TB server-grade hard drive what they really mean is that it contains regular Hitachi Deskstar 7K drives, namely the 7K1000 for the 1TB unit and -probably- the E7K500 for the 500GB unit.
This can be seen on pictures of a 1TB Time Capsule's innards taken by nakedmac and posted on flickr.
According to Hitachi's spec sheets, these drives are tailored for
Internal and external storage for consumer computers
Networked storage servers
Extreme gaming machines
Video editing arrays So in a sense yes they are "network-grade".

Telsa sets the record straight: Roadster has airbags, okay?

Tesla VP of Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Service, Darryl Siry, set the record straight on the whole airbag wavier thing: in case it wasn't already clear, the Roadster does indeed have driver and passenger airbags. WDR-Hörspiel-Downloads noch ohne Radio Tatort
Schon seit letztem Sommer bietet der WDR auf seinem Download-Portal ausgewählte Hörspiele kostenlos im MP3-Format an. Leider wechselt das Angebot derzeit jedoch noch ausgesprochen selten, die beiden aktuell angebotenen Hörspiele stehen bereits sein Anfang Januar online.Vielleicht hilft ja die eine oder andere Nachfrage per E-Mail? Denn diese werden beim WDR erfreulicherweise gelesen. Eine Stellungnahme zu den offensichtlich zu Hauf eingehenden Downloadwünschen zum Radio Tatort verweist auf rechtliche Probleme, der Sender bemühe sich aber um eine Klärung. iPhone in Österreich doch schon Mitte März?
Dass nach den USA, Deutschland, Großbritannien und Frankreich das iPhone am 14. März auch in Irland offiziell zu haben sein wird, ist seit gestern bekannt. Auch in Österreich wird seit ein paar Tagen um die baldige Einführung des Apple-Mobiltelefons spekuliert. Bis vor kurzem hieß es noch, man werde im Sommer mit dem iPhone in unserem Nachbarland rechnen, könnte der Start eventuell doch vorgezogen werden.

Design-Studie: iMac mit gebogenem Display
Es ist kein Geheimnis, das es viele schlechte und auch sehr viel gute Design-Studien rund um Apple-Produkte gibt, die oft ein Traum der Gestalter bleiben. Man muss nur im Internet ein wenig auf die Suche gehen und findet dann mitunter auch skurile Kreationen. Apples Blu-ray-Lieferant wird wohl Sony
Einige Quellen vermuteten Blu-ray-Laufwerke bereits mit den kürzlich vorgestellten MacBook-Pro-Modellen. IBM's "green optical link" promises one second movie downloads

So IBM is apparently working like crazy on some next-gen communications technology that -- ready to have your mind blown? -- "uses light instead of wires to send information." We know, this is some crazy future crap up in here, but check it out. Nicht neu: SDK nicht für alle Entwickler
In wenigen Tagen wissen wir mehr zu der von Apple angekündigten Entwicklungsumgebung für iPhone- bzw. iPod touch-Programme und der damit verbundenen Öffnung von Apples Mobilgeräte-Betriebssystem für die Softwareentwicklungen von externen Entwicklern.
DIe Tatsache, dass sich im Moment das halbe Internet von der "Mutmaßung" überrascht zeigt, Apple könne den Zugriff auf das SDK limitieren und nur ausgewählte Anwendungen für den Vertrieb über iTunes freigeben, überrascht nun allerdings uns:

Oktober 2007 hat Apple dies recht deutlich angekündigt: "[Steve Jobs] nennt Nokias Modell mit digital signierten Applikationen als Beispiel für eine beschränkte Öffnung einer Mobilplattform für externe Entwickler und kündigt ein verbessertes aber ebenso sicheres System an." Time Capsule steht seit ein paar Tagen bereits zur Auslieferung und wurde an die ersten Besteller verschickt. Entsprechende Versandbestätigungen erhielten nicht nur wir, sondern auch einige andere. Erfreuliche News für alle iPod touch und iPhone-Hacker: ZiPhone liegt jetzt in Version 2.5 vor und ist für jedermann verfügbar (eigentlich sollte die Spender der Vergangenheit bevorteilt werden). TiVo shuttering Rewards program, screwing its best customers

Apparently TiVo sent around an email notifying its loyal overpaying customers that it's shutting down the TiVo Rewards program on May 28th of this year. This won't matter to the vast majority of TIVo customers, no no, this decision only screws the company's staunchest word-of-mouth advocates. Worst parents in the world punk kid into thinking he got an Xbox 360

Your parents ever do anything mean to you for their own amusement when you were a kid? Whatever it was, something tells us it wasn't as evil as what Jonathan's (above) family did, having him unwrap an empty Xbox box with some shirts inside -- while on video, mind you -- and then laughing at him when he got upset and cried that he'd been hoodwinked.
