Disney puts Nintendo DS to use as interactive tour guide

UK iPhone sales fall below targets

Lotus Notes 8.5 bald auch für Mac
War es früher bisweilen noch schwierig, Programme der "großen" Hersteller für Mac OS zu bekommen, da alles auf Windows ausgerichtet war, sieht die Welt heute schon anders aus. Fast alles, was das Apple-Herz begehrt, ist auf dem Markt zu finden. IBM ist mit seinem dokumentorientierten Datenbanksystem Lotus Notes bisher allerdings eine Ausnahme geblieben. Researchers hope to charge up gadgetry with body heat

Additional Information about MacBook Air CPU
During the keynote, Steve was not providing much information concerning the CPU that powers the MacBook Air, despite the fact that Intel reduced CPU size by 60%.
Anandtech obtained some additional information. The CPU would be a Core 2 Duo Merom, featuring a reduced packaging to make it as small as possible.
Both cores (located below the Alu plate) are identical, only the connections and printed circuit around are reduced, as well as pins on the other side.
This CPU is not one of Intel ultra low voltage series, as it is clocked much higher, however its TDP is around 20W, so lower than those located in MacBook at similar speed.
Such packaging was originally planned to be introduced by Intel later in the year, but it seems that Apple and the founder are working well together and that Intel agreed

While you'd be hard pressed to come up with a safer Apple rumor to predict, it seems that AppleInsider has it on supposedly reliable word that the company will in fact be extending multi-touch trackpads to its top-end MacBook Pro line, and in the "next several weeks," no less. Mac OS X 10.5.2 to Bring CD/DVD Sharing
Missing optical drive, the MacBook Air can use remote drives reachable via the wireless network to install applications. If no details were provided regarding the procedure, Babygotmac bring some information.
As reported by Andrew too (a new Hardmac Team member), the future Mac OSX 10.5.2 update will include a new function allowing CD/DVD sharing, which should work on all Macs, as the MacBook Air will need them for external application.

How to Install Tiger on a Mac Pro Rev 2
Many of you have asked us if it is possible to run the new Mac Pro under Tiger. If you ask Apple, they will say it is impossible to install (Tiger), which is correct. The machine will not boot off any MAC OSX 10.4.xx dvd.
Lots of readers have contacted us to explain a workaround. There are in fact two solutions:
- Install OS X 10.4 and all its updates on a hard drive from another machine, then connect it to the Mac Pro Octo, which will now work with the hard drive.
- Start the Mac Pro in Target mode ("T" at boot up) and connect it via firewire to an Intel Mac running Tiger. Perform an installation from the Intel Mac onto a disk of the Mac Pro Octo, including all updates.
In both cases, the Mac Pro Octo will boot up (Tiger) and function normally. It is understood to be possible to clone a disk (on the Mac Pro Rev 2) from a disk that is already "in production" on another machine.

NVidia Is Working on a GF 8800 GT for Previous Generation Mac Pro
As most Mac-dedicated websites, Engadgetreported complains from Mac users about the lack of backward compatibility of the GeForce 8800 GT in previous generation Mac Pro.
When asking NVidia representative, they obtained some information. NVidia is already working on a update kit to make the GF 8800GT compatible with all Mac Pro. It should be available in couple of weeks.
As NVidia is not directly selling products, it will most likely be a new graphic card which will be added to the Apple Store; it should feature a modified BIOS to support all PCI-Express-based Mac Pro version. The price of this update kit remains unknown and will for sure be a topic to follow.

PS3 to Become a Digital Recorder
Source : TGdailySony keeps updating its game station PS3 to add additional feature, and make it a more attractive option to its competitors. The company plans to offer in a near future an external USB tuner which will turn the PS3 into a digital recorder (playback or streaming).

GeForce 8800 GT bald auch für ältere Mac Pros

Handpresso gets unboxed: how did we ever get by without?

Actually, that headline is a bit misleading, since we'd never actually subscribe to a method of coffee production that required any sort of effort before the coffee is actually in our body -- clearly defeating the purpose -- but this Handpresso thing is still quite the little gizmo in its own right. It works pretty much exactly like you'd expect: pump the handle to the right pressure level, add an espresso pod and hot water, flip the switch and blammo, you've got a few waking hours in a cup. Lenovo to outsource all laptop production to Taiwanese suppliers

Apparently that cheap Chinese labor ain't what it used to be: Lenovo's putting all its laptop eggs in the Taiwan basket. Lenovo currently has Quanta, Compal, Wistron and Inventec building for it in Taiwan, and the company plans to drop one of those from its consumer line and add one manufacturer to its ThinkPad line. This apparently means that Lenovo's outsourcing its laptop manufacturing completely for the first time in its history, which might seem a bit odd for a Chinese company, but with Lenovo's market share slipping to the likes of Acer, it seems the time is right to make a move. Iphone verkauft sich in Großbritannien nur mäßig
In Großbritannien sind seit dem Verkaufsstart im November erst 190.000 Iphones über den Ladentisch gewandert. Das berichtet Financial Times. Chinesisches Unternehmen verklagt Microsoft
Wie die Nachrichtenagentur Xinhua berichtet, hat das chinesische IT-Unternehmen Zhongyi Electronic Microsoft wegen illegalen Einsatzes seiner unternehmenseigenen Technologie verklagt. Dabei handelt es sich um Zhengma, ein System, das die Eingabe von chinesischen Silben mit lateinischen Buchstaben erlaubt. Zhongyi Electronics zufolge wird es auf Rechnern mit Windows 95, 98, 2000 und XP eingesetzt, obwohl das Redmonder Unternehmen bis dato nur für den Einsatz des Systems auf Windows 95 Lizenzgebühren bezahlt habe.

Handystrahlung verhindert erholsamen Schlaf

AnyDVD 6.3.0.3 weiter verbessert

NBC und Apple versöhnen sich
Das Ende der Fahnenstange war für Jeff Zucker, CEO von NBC Universal, bereits im Oktober vergangenen Jahres erreicht, als Steve Jobs sich weigerte, sein iTunes-Preismodell neu zu verhandeln. Zu gering sei der Gewinn, den ein Vertrieb der NBC-Produktionen über die Download-Platform abwerfe, bemängelte Zucker damals. Nachdem die beiden Streithähne damals alles andere als eine Versöhnung herbeiführen konnten, setzen sie sich nun wieder an einen Tisch. Für den neu vorgestellten iTunes-Filmverleih kann sich Zucker nun doch wieder eine Kooperation vorstellen und zeigt sich kompromissbereit.

AT&T fordert Webfilter gegen illegalen Dateientausch

Unix-Betriebssystem Free-BSD 6.3 ist fertig
Die Entwickler von Free-BSD haben die Version 6.3 ihres Unix-Betriebssystems etwas verspätet fertiggestellt. Die neue Stable, die eigentlich noch 2007 fertig werden sollte, enthält neben zahlreichen Sicherheitsupdates etwa für BIND und IPv6 jetzt auch eine ACPI-Unterstützung. Report: Outsourcing-Business erholt sich
Der jüngste Report des Beratungsunternehmens TPI hat ermittelt, dass sich der weltweite Outsourcing-Markt wieder erholt. TPI schätzt, dass es Ende letzten Jahres insgesamt rund 2700 aktive Verträge gab, die einen jährlichen Umsatz von etwa 79 Milliarden erzielt hatten. Allein im vierten Quartal 2007 betrug das Vertragsvolumen 27 Milliarden Dollar - das höchste, das seit elf Jahren in einem Quartal erzielt worden war. "Bisher lag der Wachstumsrekord in diesem Business-Sektor bei gut sieben Prozent. Und für dieses Jahr erwarten wir ein Wachstum von sieben bis acht Prozent", sagt Duncan Aitchison, Europa-Chef bei TPI.

iPhone-Firmware 1.1.3 bereits gehackt
Kaum jemand außerhalb von Apple dürfte wissen, ob die 1.1.3 bereits das große Update ist, welches den Weg für offiziell sanktionierte Drittanwendungen ebnet. Auch ist nicht bekannt, zu welchen Bedingungen das geschehen wird. Apple könnte sich entschließen, den Vertrieb komplett über den iTunes Store abzuwickeln, was sicherlich in den Ländern für Begeisterungsstürme sorgen wird, die gar keinen iTunes Store besitzen (und wohl auch nie bekommen werden, vom derzeitigen Expansions"tempo" ausgehend).Vielleicht wird auch jede Anwendung zur Zwangs-Shareware, um Anteile an den iTunes Store abzuführen.

FreeBSD 6.3 freigegeben
Die freie Unix-Variante FreeBSD ist nun in der Version 6.3 erschienen. Das Update für die 6.x-Reihe bringt vor allem kleinere Aktualisierungen mit, denn parallel arbeiten die Entwickler bereits an FreeBSD 7.0. (FreeBSD)

iPhone 1.1.3 bereits gehackt?
tuaw.com meldet, dass man wohl die neue iPhone-Software 1.1.3 gehackt habe - auf einem Video auf YouTube sieht man Installer.app, wie es auf einem iPhone mit der 1.1.3er Firmware läuft. Die Vorgehensweise sei diesmal aber so komplex, dass die Autoren auf eine Veröffentlichung vorerst noch verzichtet

Das Programmieren von iPhone-Anwendungen geht auch ohne SDK und mit frisch verschnürten 1.1.3-Mobilgeräten weiter. Neu von Numark: Plattenspieler & 19"-Rack mit Dock
Numark bringt als Ergänzung zum USB-Plattenspieler TTUSB das erweiterte Modell TTi und damit die Möglichkeit, Vinyl-Schallplatten direkt mit einem über das integrierte iPod-Dock angeschlossenen iPod aufzunehmen.

Bayern will Online-Durchsuchungen im Alleingang
Der Freistaat Bayern will seinem Verfassungsschutz im Alleingang Online-Durchsuchungen gegen Terrorverdächtige erlauben. Der bayerische Innenminister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) will dazu schon im Februar 2008 einen Gesetzentwurf auf den Weg bringen.

Webkit-Browser, ganz einfach: Radon
Neuer Versuch im Wettbewerb um den schnellsten Browser: Radon ist Leopard-exklusiv und stellt Websites dank Webkit genauso wie Safari dar. Ansonsten ist der Browser aber mehr eine dezent aufgepeppte Version eines Webkit-Beispielbrowsers mit bunten Schaltflächen. Sogar die Downloadfunktion wurde in ein externes Programm ausgelagert, lediglich ein Google-Suchfeld hat es noch in die Anwendung geschafft. Resultat ist ein Browser, der nur drei MB auf die Dateiwaage bringt.

Apple sucht nach neuem chinesischen Partner
Die Verhandlungen mit China Mobile sind geplatzt - Gerüchten nach war der Mobilfunkanbieter nicht mit den Forderungen Apples einverstanden -, aber es gibt schließlich noch andere Anbieter. Insider-Quellen aus der Industrie sollen der Shanghai Morning Post etwas von möglichen Verhandlungen mit China Telecom und China Unicom geflüstert haben. You've got to hand it to modder Mark Irwin, who did his fellow tinkerers proud by assembling a bunch of found objects into a very handy audio / video dock for the squat new iPod nano.
