USB typing speedometer teaches Mavis Beacon a lesson in speed

Researchers working to teach creepy baby robot to talk

We just got our 2.5GHz Penryn / 4GB fourth-gen MacBook Pro. Plenty of power under that hood, but the outward differences are few: it's got the new, reorganized F-key layout (which we're not all that fond of), and the trackpad physically the same (with the addition of multi-touch, which works just as well as it did on the MacBook Air). A new business strategic for the iPhone?
Source : BusinessweekDuring an interview, Apple's chief operational officer Tim Cook stated that the company was "not married" to an exclusive-carrier business model for the iPhone.
This is the first time that an executive does not shut the door for non-subscription models, and this single sentence makes us hope for an unlocked version of the iPhone in the future.
But, married or not, Apple is bound by contracts to the operators, and except if they have foreseen a special clause, such a development of the market would probably make these operators less willing to renew their (exclusive) contracts with Apple.

Vermutlich will Nvidia erst nach der CeBIT 2008 sein neues Single-GPU-Flaggschiff vorstellen. AIBO matches real dogs in chasing away loneliness, research claims

While robot / human relations seem to be fairly solid at the moment, it looks like the fight is already on between canines and their robotic counterparts. Some researchers at Saint Louis University compared Sony's AIBO with a mutt named Sparky at three different nursing homes, to see how residents would respond. Overclock the GeForce 8800 GT on OS X
We all know overclocking a video card is easy with a Windows machine it is easy to overclock a video card and there even exists software solutions to help one do so. OS X, however, prevents access to such settings, making our only option a firmware flash.
We looked at the Mac firmware of the 8800 GT and have found the hexadecimal sequence as follows:

It is unique and contains 3 frequencies of the video card, the figures in brackets were there only to ensure that the sequence is unique. To read them, we must reverse the pairs of values, as was the case seven years ago when we learned how to overclock the first GeForce 2 MX. Ahh, memories

This time it's a patent lawsuit by a Massachusetts man named Romek Figa, who claims to have patented a caller ID system infringed by the iPhone. Of course, leaving the iPhone locked into AT & T reopens this problem, the practice seemed quite to have irritated some people and they have contacted their state representative (equivalent of our deputies) to propose a law called the "Wireless Consumer Protection and Community Broadband Empowerment Act of 2008". One of the measures recommended, which seems tailor-made for (potential) iPhone customers, would require operators to sell only the phone, without subsidies or bound to a subscription.
As in all democratic countries of the world this bill is going to have to confront the lobbyists who will try to influence it, depending on their interests, to be adopted or placed by the wayside.

Telekom profitiert 2007 von starkem Auslandsgeschäft
Die Deutsche Telekom hat im Geschäftsjahr 2007 in Deutschland einen Umsatzrückgang von 5,4 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr hinnehmen müssen. Allerdings konnte der Konzern den Verlust durch sein starkes Auslandsgeschäft kompensieren. Während der Umsatz im Inland auf 30,7 Milliarden Euro fiel, legte die Auslandssparte um 10,2 Prozent auf 31,8 Milliarden Euro zu und machte damit 50,9 Prozent des Gesamtumsatzes von 62,5 Milliarden Euro aus (plus 1,9 Prozent). Das geht aus den heute veröffentlichten Zahlen des Bonner Unternehmens hervor.

Source : Apple Apple is happy. The iTunes Store is the second biggest vendor of music in the USA. Only Wal-Mart still resists and keeps its first place position. If this figure charms Apple, it disturbs the usual channels of distribution and the majors music producers. The former will have to think how to fight this trend and also about diversification. A couple of words on the Penryn in the portables
After questions from many readers, we will recall some details on the processors equipping our new portables.
Here are the principle new features:
- fabricated in 45 nm process: this along with other optimizations allows the reduction of power used by the processor. Note that Apple has revued its method for calculating the time to discharge the battery; this gives the impression that the new portables have a shorter time on battery power - however the numbers now are really just more realistic. The old figures were never really attainable except by switching off wifi and turning down the brightness of the display ie doing nothing with the computer.
- Increase of L2 cache that is now 3 MB (compared to 2 MB previously) on the base model MBP and the MacBooks, and 6 MB (compared to 4 MB) on the high range MBP: this increased cache will improve the performance in certain conditions.
- Addition of SSE4. This new instruction set is expected to have a big performance enhancement for mult

Why hasn't anyone hacked the Kindle?

You know, the Kindle runs Linux, has USB, uses all standard processors and chipsets, even comes with free built-in EV-DO -- you'd kind of think that stuff (and all the rest) would make it about as high a profile target for hardware modders and hackers as there are. So what gives, why hasn't the hacker community glommed onto this thing? AnandTech evaluates the MacBook and MacBook Pro updates. Conclusion? Yawn
AnandTech has taken a close look at the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros both inside and outside. Their conclusion? Not much to talk about. The internals are almost exactly the same. Same motherboards, same hardware save for new video chips and trackpad on the MacBook Pros and Penryns and RAM/HD configurations on both.
Alltogether kind of a small update from Apple. In fact, the MacBook Pros haven't been touched much over the past two years. We expect much more from Apple at the WWDC 2008. Perhaps even a *gasp* redesign.

Probleme mit iTunes 7.6.1

Telekom wächst dank gutem Auslandsgeschäft
Auch im vierten Quartal 2007 musste die Deutsche Telekom einen leichten Umsatzrückgang um 0,6 Prozent auf 15,795 Milliarden Euro verbuchen, für das Gesamtjahr weist der Konzern aber ein Umsatzplus von 1,9 Prozent auf 62,516 Milliarden Euro aus. iPhone (& iPod touch) Software Roadmap am 6. März
Apple hat für nächsten Donnerstag um 19 Uhr unserer Zeit zu einer Presseveranstaltung im kalifornischen Cupertino geladen, um Einzelheiten zu kommenden Softwareneuerungen für das iPhone und vermutlich auch den iPod touch sowie zur bevorstehenden Veröffentlichung einer Entwicklungsumgebung für externe Softwareentwickler bekannt zugeben.
Schwerpunkt der Veranstaltung sind laut der Einladung Unternehmenslösungen. Wir erwarten in diesem Zusammenhang die Verbesserung der Anbindung an Microsoft Exchange-Server sowie die Ankündigung eines Cisco VPN-Clients für das iPhone.
Unabhängig davon wird der 6. März Aufschluss darüber geben, in welchem Umfang wir zukünftig Programme von Drittunternehmen und freien Entwicklern für das iPhone und den iPod touch erwarten dürfen. Sehr wahrscheinlich ist zum Beispiel die Ankündigung erster Spiele für Apples Multitouch-Geräte. Now that the future of HD media has been clarified with the retirement of HD-DVD, electronic manufacturers hope that this technology and all that accompanies it will have a strong growth.
Samsung prepares to produce in quantity in the third quarter 16" LCD screens that support full HD; these are foreseen for portable computers. This screen with a format of 16:9 will have a resolution of 1920x1080.

ABC propose VOD films for free
The US chain ABC has decided to propose for free VOD of many series, such as "Desperate Housewives" or "Lost", to people with cable or satellite connections.
However it will be impossible for viewers to skip the advertisements that will be built into the files since the fast forward function will be disabled.
We will see in the future if this initiative is viable, with TV channels investigating all options to stop the pirating of their products. Intel lays out roadmap for Montevina-based Centrino 2 platform
