Sony's PS3 headtracking system does it all with a camera

We were already blown away by Johnny Lee's headtracking demo using a Wiimote, but it looks like Sony's trying to take it mainstream in a much slicker way. The company was demoing a PS3-based headtracking system at GDC that doesn't require any special IR glasses to function -- it just uses a bone-stock Playstation Eye camera to track your ugly mug around the room. Sony says it's not announcing the system for any games yet, but we can't imagine devs aren't clamoring for this to get official -- this would be amazing

Garmin's Nuvifone comes under fire for trademark violations

Garmin probably thought getting into the mobile phone game would just be smooth sailing, but it looks like they've made a deadly miscalculation. Okay, that might be over-dramatizing the situation, but the PND-maker is facing a new lawsuit over its upcoming 3G wonder-device, the Nuvifone. Although Gibson's self-tuning Robot Guitar is mighty snazzy, buying an entirely new instrument in order to ease your tuning woes isn't exactly practical. Razer teases CeBIT-bound Speed of (The) Light mouse

Of course, the inevitable question came up about the Eee PC's success thus far, and what that means to computer companies on the higher end of the spectrum, like Sony. Memory cards with 4X more capacity
Source : DailytechMetaRAM have announced that they have developed a technology called DDR2 MetaSDRAM, that allows them to double or quadruple the capacity of memory cards while keeping their compatibility.
To allow them to do this within the confines of constant space, they piled up the chips, which would have caused compatibility problem had they not developed a new component that makes the system believe that each pile is just a single chip of larger capacity. And this point is important since one knows that can not address an infinite number of chips on a card.
The interest in this technology is two fold. It will permit at the high end of the range to make cards of very high capacity, but also to propose lower capacity cards that are less expensive, since the price of memory chips rises more quickly than the capacity of

"Silicon womb" enters human testing in the UK

In-vitro fertilization may soon become much more effective, if a new device dubbed the "silicon womb" comes out of testing successfully. Currently test-tube embryos are developed in an incubator, but the .2-inch long silicon womb, produced by Anecova, allows them to be implanted inside the mother for up to four days, during which time they're exposed to the uterus through 360 40-micron holes. Linpus rolls out Linux-based OS aimed at low-cost laptops / UMPCs

While its claim of being the "first" to offer an OS specifically designed for the latest crop of low-cost laptops and UMPCs may be a little dubious, the unfortunately-named Linpus is at least pretty quick to jump on the bandwagon. The Consolidation Quarter
After starting the year with a flourish of announcements (MacBook Air, Time Capsule, rentals on the iTunes Store) and excellent results for the last quarter of fiscal announced at the end of January, it seems Apple has decided to devote the current quarter for the consolidation of its products rather than departing from their current builds.
Indeed, if we look closely, all the physical changes have been relatively minor:
-- GB iPhone 16
-- Touch 32 GB iPod
-- 2 GB iPod Shuffle
-- MacBook Pro Penryn
-- MacBook Penryn
It should be noted that over the last two MacBook interations, Apple has done the minimum in R & D by not touching either's motherboard design, content to replace the processors, memory and hard drive.

Apple has just released version 1.1.4 of iPhone firmware. There does not seem to be any obvious new features with this new firmware compared to version 1.1.3 but the tools for unlocking the iPhone will not work yet.
The update is available from iTunes (162.1 MB) as usual. If you have an iPhone desim unlocked or Jailbroken - we advise waiting some days to get the first reports from other users.

EU belegt Microsoft erneut mit Bußgeld
Wie Financial Times Deutschland berichtet, hat die EU-Kommission heute gegen Microsoft bereits zum zweiten Mal ein Strafgeld verhängt. 899 Euro soll der Softwarekonzern zahlen, weil er bis Oktober 2007 ungerechtfertigte Lizenzgebühren für technische Informationen berechnet und damit früheren EU-Sanktionen aus dem Jahr 2004 zuwider gehandelt hat. Die EU-Kommission hatte Microsoft damals wegen Missbrauchs seiner marktbeherrschenden Stellung zu einem Bußgeld von rund 500 Millionen Euro verdonnert.

1.1.4 iPhone Firmware out, Jailbreak-able - but wait 2-3 days
Apple last night released the 1.1.4 iPhone firmware. Early reports say that it is Jailbreakable via Zibri's method but both Zibri and iJailbreak are telling people to hold off for a few days until they work out any bugs.
Us? Updated to 1.1.4 and trying out the different jailbreaks. Zibri's 2.4 works fine as far as we can tell. We did get a weird error (pictured) but the iPhone works fine, upgrades, Installer.app, phone etc, all workingmore to comeas we play with it. We're looking at the updated files of course.

Financial Times startet Exklusiv-Netzwerk
Wie der Guardian berichtet, startet die Wirtschaftszeitung Financial Times ein exklusives Online-Netzwerk für Spitzenvertreter der Medien- und Technologiebranche. Der genaue Launchtermin steht allerdings noch nicht fest. Eine Mitgliedschaft soll umgerechnet rund 2650 Euro jährlich kosten. Damit bleibt der Zutritt zur elitären Internetgemeinschaft zahlungskräftigen Entscheidungsträgern vorbehalten, die dann ganz unter sich bleiben können.

Urteil: Online-Durchsuchungen sind grundsätzlich zulässig
Das Bundesverfassungsgericht hat die Online-Durchsuchung von Computern grundsätzlich für rechtens erklärt. Der Einsatz von Spionageprogrammen sei unter strengen Auflagen mit dem Grundgesetz vereinbar. Allerdings dürften Ermittler PCs von Verdächtigen nur dann ausspionieren, wenn "eine konkrete Gefahr für ein überragend wichtiges Rechtsgut" wie ein Menschenleben oder den Bestand des Staates bestehe. Darüber hinaus benötigten sie generell eine richterliche Anordnung.

Pfiffiges Autoradio mit iPod-Anschluss
Voraussichtlich Ende März kommt mit dem RK8200 von Parrot ein wahres Multitalent fürs Auto auf den Markt. Neben beliebigen USB-MP3-Playern besitzt das Autoradio auch einen Steckplatz für SD/MMC-Karten und einen Dockanschluss für iPods. Zudem können im internen Speicher des Geräts rund 300 MP3-Titel abgelegt werden.
Wer noch CDs hortet ist mit dem RK8200 allerdings schlecht bedient, auf ein entsprechendes Laufwerk wurde beim RK8200 verzichtet. Den Platz hinter der Frontblende nutzt Parrot statt dessen als praktische Ablagefläche für den iPod oder ein verbundenes Mobiltelefon. Die integrierte Bluetooth-Freisprecheinrichtung unterstützt alle relevanten Protokolle, telefoniert wird über die Autolautsprecher und zwei in der Frontblende des Geräts verbaute Mikrofone.
Die Preisempfehlung des Herstellers liegt bei 100 Euro.

Verizon gibt Open-Network-Spezifikation frei
Verizon Wireless hat jetzt den Zeitplan für sein Open Network finalisiert. Am 19. März soll die erste Version der Netzwerk-Spezifikation herausgegeben werden, mit denen die Entwickler neue Geräte und Anwendungen für den Open-Network-Service entwickeln können. Beim Deutschen Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz wurde mit BabbleTunes die Möglichkeit, iTunes oder auch einen iPod sprachzentriert zu bedienen, geschaffen. Durch eine Äußerung wie Spiele Kalter Kaffee von Clueso kann man mittels BabbleTunes den gewünschten Titel direkt abspielen, ohne dass zuvor spezielle Sprachkommandos erlernt werden müssen. Laut den Entwicklern arbeitet das System nahezu verzögerungsfrei, auf der diesjährigen CeBIT (Halle 9, Stand B37) kann man sich ein eigenes Bild vom Stand der Entwicklung machen.

Thunderbird 2.0.0.12 schließt fünf Sicherheitslöcher
Vor 2,5 Wochen wurde der Browser Firefox 2.0.0.12 veröffentlicht, um eine Reihe von Sicherheitslücken zu beseitigen. Einen Teil der Sicherheitslöcher in Firefox betreffen auch den E-Mail-Client Thunderbird, da beide auf die gleiche Rendering Engine setzen. IBM kauft Aktien zurück
Der IBM-Vorstand hat einen Aktien-Kaufplan im Wert von 15 Milliarden Dollar autorisiert. IBM zufolge ist dies ein integraler Bestandteil der Wachstumsstrategie des Unternehmens. Bereits 2008 wird der Konzern etwa zwölf Milliarden Dollar in Aktienrückkäufe stecken. Die Wertpapiere sollen mit Finanzmitteln aus dem Geldmittelbestand erworben werden. Googles Aktien fallen
Google, das Vorzeige-Unternehmen der IT-Branche, kränkelt jetzt auch. Die Aktien des Suchgiganten fielen am Dienstag um 4,57 Prozent. Verantwortlich für den Einbruch sind die aktuellen Zahlen des Internet-Marktforschungsinstituts Comscore. Diese haben für die bezahlte Klick-Performance in den USA im Januar ein flaches Jahr-zu-Jahr-Wachstum gemeldet. Dies ist eine abrupte Wende, denn noch im vierten Quartal konnte Google ein 25-prozentiges Wachstum verkünden. Sony stellt neue Mehrraum-Soundlösung vor
Sony hat neue 5.1-Heim-Kino-Anlagen vorgestellt, die mittels der proprietären S-AIR-Technik schnurlos den Ton in mehrere Räume übertragen können. iTunes die Nummer zwei in den USA
Eine neue Statistik der Marktforschergruppe NPD zeigt, wie wichtig der Online-Musikvertrieb geworden ist. Der iTunes Store ist demnach jetzt der zweigrößte Musikhändler in den USA, hinter Wal-Mart. Die Daten basieren auf den Absatzzahlen im letzten Jahr. Apple gab zudem in einer Pressemitteilung bekannt, dass man nun 50 Millionen iTunes-Kunden zähle und bereits mehr als vier Milliarden Songs abgesetzt habe.

Hack automates Guitar Hero, for times when a fake guitar isn't fake enough

This hack is neither cheap nor easy, but if for some reason you just have to pull off a feat of Guitar Hero virtuosity but lack the necessary skill, the folks at SYSTM have now provided details on how to automate the controller so you never miss a note. At the heart of the hack is a so-called "show control system," which runs a hefty $210 but will let you program all the necessary strums and button presses with some seemingly not to difficult to use software. News: NPD: iTunes to replace Wal-Mart as top music retailer this year

Changing SIMs in officially unlocked iPhones has been fixed...
Great news for all users of officially unlocked iPhones (France/Germany). I previously reported that firmware 1.1.3 would refuse to allow you to use a different SIM card without first syncing it with iTunes. I felt at the time this must have been a bug as 1.1.2 did not have this issue.
I am glad to report that 1.1.4 has fixed this bug, and now one can change SIM cards in officially unlocked iPhones without re-syncing with iTunes.

Sony H50 and W300 camera hands-ons

Oddly, it turns out the photos floating around of the DSC-W300 really don't do the megapixel-packing slim point and shoot justice. That finish actuall looks pretty good in real life, although the lens protrusion was a little puzzling. And, of course, the DSC-H50 is a hefty, solid feeling bugger, not unlike what you'd expect from the H-series.
