Nintendo wants your money for online "Pay & Play" gaming?

Nintendo couldn't have been more obtuse in its announcement last week at GDC, but from the looks of it you won't be enjoying that totally free Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection play forever. Nintendo is busting out a new Pay & Play service for certain games, which seems to refer to both downloadable content for some titles, and online multiplayer for others. It's really hard to tell, but it doesn't sound like Nintendo has any intention of going the Xbox Live route. iTunes now number two US music retailer

Auf dem CeBIT-Messestand C03 in Halle 21 der europäischen Generalvertretung Winkom präsentiert der koreanische Speicherspezialist Mtron seine neuesten SSD-Laufwerke. News: Apple now selling 2GB iPod shuffle
Apple’s new 2GB second-generation iPod shuffle is now available from Apple’s online store. Available in the same five colors — silver, blue, green, purple, and (Product) Red — as the 1GB models announced last September, the 2GB models are listed as shipping in 7-10 business days. Neue Version von Microsofts .Net Micro Framework

New MacBooks and MacBook Pros
Apple finally updated the MacBook and MacBook Pro line. Although, the upgrades are significant, they didn't include the larger trackpads that many, including us, had expected. The Pro line does have multi-touch now, however.
The case designs for both lines are also the same.

Open-Source-Virtualisierung für Intel-Macs
Innotek hat eine neue Betaversion der Virtualisierungslösung VirtualBox veröffentlicht. Die Open-Source-Software steht für Intel-Macs zur Verfügung und ist mit der neuen Beta-3-Version auch Leopard-kompatibel geworden. Unterstützt werden in der Hauptsache Windows-Systeme wie XP und Vista. Leider ist die Dokumentation noch etwas lückenhaft, gerade für die Mac-Version, welche sich noch im Beta-Stadium befindet.

Aw snap. It finally, really happened kind of. Apple has just dropped a nasty refresh on its MacBook and MacBook Pro line, knocking the processor speeds up, and giving the Pros that tasty multi-touch the MacBook Air has been sporting. Still, they couldn't break off an even slightly new form-factor for us? Right now we're seeing updates to the GPU, an LED backlight (option!) for 17-inchers, as well as LEDs on all the rest of the Pros (sorry again MacBookers), and of course those speed bumps still, this leaves something to be desired. Sonys bewirbt seinen neuesten Radiowecker mit der einprägsamen Produktbezeichnung ICF-ClipMK2 nicht als kompatibel mit iPods und dem iPhone.
Diese Aussage bezieht sich nach unserem Informationsstand jedoch lediglich auf die Möglichkeit, das iPhone wie einen iPod über den Dockanschluss anzustecken, zu laden und Musik darüber abzuspielen. Eine Freisprechfunktion wie auch eine spezielle Abschirmung gegen Interferenzen scheint nicht gegeben.Aber immerhin, der Preis für das ab Mai erhältliche Gerät liegt angesichts des beschriebenen Leistungsumfangs mit den angepeilten 100 Dollar auf jeden Fall im akzeptablen Bereich. Internet: 2007 war Gründer-Boomjahr
2007 sind in Deutschland 323 Internetunternehmen gegründet worden. Zu diesem Ergebnis kommt eine Datenerhebung des Online-Magazins Deutsche Startups. Siemens bestätigt Entlassungen bei SEN
Der Siemens-Konzern hat Berichte über Entlassungen in seiner defizitären Telefonanlagensparte Enterprise Communications (SEN) offiziell bestätigt. Demnach sollen weltweit 3800 Stellen abgebaut werden, davon bis zu 2000 in Deutschland. Zusätzlich werden laut Siemens weltweit etwa 3000 Arbeitsplätze, 1200 davon in Deutschland, durch Partnerschaften oder geplante Verkäufe wegfallen. Hierzulande sind in erster Linie das SEN-Stammhaus sowie Verwaltungs- und Support-Abteilungen betroffen.

iPod-Verkäufe rückläufig?
Der allgegenwärtige Gene Munster hat den Monat Januar bereits bezüglich der iPod-Verkaufszahlen analysiert und stellt einen Rückgang im Vergleich zum Vorjahr fest. Hochgerechnet auf das gesamte Quartal bis Ende März seien Verkäufe zwischen 9.5 und 10.3 Millionen Einheiten zu erwarten, so Munster. Wenn Apple genau die Mitte dieser Schätzungen erreicht, wäre ein Rückgang um 6 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahr festzuhalten. Diese wäre das erste mal überhaupt, dass Apple seine iPod-Verkäufe nicht steigern könnte.

Apparently Intel still has some difficulties with these 3 times 2 cores, because they're limited to a 1066 MHz FSB speed, while the latest Mac Pro's are already reaching 1600 MHz.

Fonic nicht mehr mit Datenbremse

Novell übernimmt Platespin
Für 205 Millionen Dollar in bar hat Novell die Firma Platespin übernommen, die Software für die Automation in Rechenzentren (RZ) bietet. Mit der Übernahme will Novell den Bereich IT-Management und Virtualisierung stärken, nachdem das Unternehmen sich zuletzt vor allem auf Linux-Lösungen konzentriert hatte. Apple schließt seinen Store vorübergehend
In den vergangenen Wochen wurde der US-amerikanische Apple Store beinahe jeden Dienstag geschlossen, um kleinere Produktneuheiten einzuführen. Mal war es ein iPod nano in pink, mal das XSan oder Aperture 2.0, und dann wieder ein neues iPhone mit 16 GB bzw ein iPod touch mit 32 GB oder der neue iPod shuffle 2 GB. Auch heute ist es wieder soweit - der Apple Store ging weltweit diesmal pünktlich um 12:00 Uhr deutscher Zeit vom Netz und damit etwas früher als sonst üblich.

Kann man Fingergesten patentieren? Zumindest wenn sie auf einem Bildschirm stattfinden und eine bestimmte Funktion ausüben. Apple hat derzeit zahlreiche Patentanträge zur Fingerbedienung von berührungsempfindlichen Bildschirmen laufen. Sollten diese dem kalifornischen Elektronikkonzern zugesprochen werden, dürfte eine von Apple initiierte Klagewelle über den Wettbewerb hereinbrechen. Tages-Flatrate: Vodafone senkt Preise für Websessions

Microsoft stops spending on HD-DVD
Following the abandonment of HD-DVD by Toshiba in favour of Blu-ray, Microsoft has announced the immediate end of selling HD-DVD readers for the Xbox 360.
A posteriori, the company will certainly have lost money, but much less than if they had decided to market this as an internal reader inside the console.
Rumours have it that there will be a new reader - this time a Blu-ray - sometime this summer.
It remains amazing the speed the the HD-DVD is disappearing, as if industry wants at all costs to bring an end to this nightmare.

Crazy MacBook/Pro rumor week concludes today
While everyone has been expecting new MacBook Pros since Macworld, yesterday all of the major rumors sites got word from retail shops that new MacBook priced models were coming as well. What does this mean?
If Apple releases MacBooks and not Pro models, it will mean either something is seriously wrong with th upcoming Pro pipeline (they are way overdue) or that Apple is waiting for an event to launch them because of a design overhaul- most likely alongside the iPhone SDK.
Something else to consider perhaps Apple is making an aluminum MacBook and essentially merging the product lines - like when the 12 inch Powerbook existed. Maybe we'll see a cross the board update?
Or maybe we'll see nothing in the Mac

Flickr-Client für Mac OS X
Mit Photonic ist ein Flickr-Client für Mac OS X erschienen. Das Programm ist gleichzeitig Upload-Manager und Flickr-Browser. Grundsätzlich bietet eine solche Applikation den Vorteil, gerade bei größeren Fotomengen, diese nicht über ein mehr oder weniger umständliches Web-Interface heraufladen zu müssen. Nokia zeigt biegsames und selbstreinigendes Handy-Konzept

Flash a Geforce 8800 PC
The EEPROM video cards on the Mac have 128 KB memory, twice the size of ROM memory on PC cards. Until now, it was impossible to flash a Geforce PC without replacing the memory chip, which is very complex.
Fortunately, NVidia has thought of us, at least in the first version of the reference 8800 GT, which has a 128 KB ROM.
We have managed to retrieve the ROM of a 8800 GT Mac, and then insert it into the PC card.

A 500GB 2,5'' disk
Fujitsu recently resumed ownership of the biggest 2.5" drive by announcing a capacity of 500 GB. Available in May, unfortunately it cannot be put into Mac portables since it is too thick (12.5 mm). However, we can use it as an external drive where it will the perfect companion for a MacBook Air, for example.

Sony's debuts new noise canceling headphones, refreshes EX series earbuds

The new MDR-NC40 noise canceling headphones feature an open-air design, with the battery pack moved to the cord to keep the weight off your head. The headphones can fold into a neat little softball-sized package for packing, and will be out in March for $100. The EX series is a bit more complicated, but the top-of-the-line is quite obvious: the MDR-EX700LP has "lightweight magnesium housings" and an "exclusive multilayer diaphragm" -- which we hear is a good thing -- along with seven sizes of hybrid-silicone earbuds for most effective ear cramming. Sony announces PS-LX300USB USB turntable, ready to fight next format war against 8-track

Those waiting for the next generation of Blu-ray players, here you go: Sony's got two new ones for you today, the BDP-S350 and BDP-S550. Both feature BD-Live (and thus Ethernet) and USB (for external) storage, while the S550 has PiP (BonusView) and 1GB of onboard storage. As for the rest of the specs, well, expect TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, dts-HD (and dts-HD Master in the S550), AVCHD and xvYCC color support, and, of course 1080 60/24p. Zukunft des Leipziger Siemens-Werks bis 2011 gesichert

Sharp and Sony tie the knot on LCD HDTV production

The WSJ is reporting that, slightly close to what was rumored, market leaders Sharp and Sony are getting hitched on a joint LCD HDTV panel production business -- not unlike how LG and Philips have LG.Philips LCD. While the venture has yet to be named (we'll call it Sharp.Sony for now, why not?), the $3.5 billion plant is under construction right now in Sakai, and is due to open its doors in March 2010 where it will produce as many as 72,000 HDTVs per month. We've always heard that Apple deliberately sends out misinformation to distract the rumor sites, and it looks like that may actually be true -- check out these shots of the Future Shop inventory system, listing the upcoming MB402LL/A and MB403LL/A SKUs from Apple as being priced at CA$1149 and CA$1349, respectively. That's MacBook pricing, if we had to make a guess -- but remember that earlier Best Buy shot that showed a box size of 17 inches square, which is way bigger than any non-Pro MacBook. Apple bietet ab sofort auch in Deutschland die kostenlose und umweltgerechte Entsorgung von iPods und Mobiltelefonen aller Hersteller an. Bei Bedarf erhält man ein Versandetikett oder auch entsprechendes Verpackungsmaterial und kann die Altgeräte in den nächsten Briefkasten werfen oder in einer Postfiliale abgeben. Viele iPods werden auf diesem Weg jedoch nicht zu Apple gelangen, diese lassen sich zumindest bisher immer noch prima über eBay entsorgen.

Virgin's coconut-powered 747 completes first flight

Finally, mankind has the answer to that eternal question, how many coconuts does it take to go from London to Amsterdam? The answer: 150,000 -- converted into biofuel and poured into a special 747, of course. Virgin Atlantic completed its first biofuel tests yesterday with solid results, using a mix of 20 percent coconut oil and 80 percent jet fuel to power a 747 -- a first for the airline industry.
