NVIDIA responds to Linus Torvalds' critique: 'supporting Linux is important'
Linux creator Linus Torvalds didn't mince any words with his criticism of NVIDIA earlier this week -- calling it, among other things, the "single worst company we've ever dealt with." That unsurprisingly didn't go unnoticed by NVIDIA, which has today issued a statement that attempts clarify its position on the open source OS. It leads off by flatly stating that "supporting Linux is important to NVIDIA," before addressing some of the criticisms that have been leveled at it from Torvalds' and others. Details on new Facebook ad system emerge
Details on Facebook's ongoing efforts to monetize its massive user base continue to trickle out, and now it appears that the social network is testing a new advertising scheme that will show up in users' news feeds. Speaking with Capstone analyst Rory Maher, Business Insider got a peek at the layout for the new ad strategy. AT&T strikes a deal with Sirius XM to make 2.3GHz LTE a reality, pitches it to the FCC
AT&T has been a little more eager than usual to get spectrum after a certain big deal fell through, and we now know that Big Blue has been willing to bury a few outstanding hatchets to make that happen. Apple releases first developer beta of OS X 10.7.5
Apple is seeding the first beta of OS X 10.7.5 to developers, according to AppleInsider. The initial build is listed as 11G15, and is a 937MB delta download, or 1.87GB in combo form. Facebook warms to subscription billing for devs, backs away from Credits as main currency

Kodak sues Apple in bid to continue with patent sales
Kodak has filed a new lawsuit against Apple, hoping to stop the latter from interrupting plans to sell part of its patent portfolio, Reuters reports. Documents were submitted yesterday through a bankruptcy court in Manhattan. Kodak asserts that Apple is wrongly claiming to own 10 patents derived from work the two companies did in the early 1990s. Also listed as a defendant is FlashPoint Technology, which claims ownership through an assignment from Apple, which spun off FlashPoint in 1996.

Keepin' it real fake: four SIMs, two memory card slots, one identity crisis
It takes quite a bit for a KIRF smartphone to turn our heads these days, but this specimen spotted by one of our readers in an Indian newspaper checked off just enough boxes to get us to take notice. As you can see, the company behind it has merged a fairly faithful iOS knock-off operating system with a device reminiscent of something from Samsung's Galaxy line, but it didn't stop there. You'll also get no less than four SIM card slots and two memory card slots, not to mention an antenna to pull down some free over-the-air TV channels. BBC 'Live Restart' brings pause, rewind and 'start from beginning' to iPlayer live streams
On demand TV is great and all, but what if the program you're wanting is on right now? Previously -- in the UK at least -- you'd have to either catch the whole thing later, or accept you'd missed a bit, and watch the rest live. Ocarina 2 arrives on iOS
Smule has released Ocarina 2, a sequel to its immensely popular Ocarina app for iPhone. Like the original, the app allows you to blow into your iPhone's microphone to create a tone, which can be changed and adjusted depending on where you hold your fingers on the touchscreen. The new version brings features like a dynamic harmony, and the ability to choose songs to be played rather than just playing freestyle (which seems similar to the options in Smule's Magic Piano app, and means Smule is once again selling extra songs as an in-app purchase). And there's also a new "Whistle Mode," and achievements that make the whole thing a little more game-centric.

Robot with tactile sensor is better at identifying materials than you are (but only wants to help)
Researchers at USC's Viterbi School of Engineering have developed a robot capable of identifying materials, thanks to a tactile sensor. The so-called BioTac sensor mimics the human finger, with flexible robot skin layered over a liquid filling -- and the skin even has fingerprints to increase the robot's sensitivity to vibration. Bot-Recycling: Dane Kouttron aka Transistor-Man hat aus einem SCARA-Roboterarm aus den Achtzigern diesen freundlichen Frankenstein 3D-ABS-Printer gebaut, was ziemlich aufwändig gewesen sein muß, denn die Controller mußte er sich selbst einfallen lassen und zusammenbasteln. Die Druckergebnisse sind zwar ziemlich große, aber an der Präzision kann man durchaus noch ein wenig feilen. Spotify for iPhone, iPad update to offer radio feature, more streaming
Spotify is upping the ante in the music streaming market by offering a new radio feature to iOS owners in the US. Launched late last year for the desktop, the Pandora-like radio service lets you setup an unlimited number of radio stations based on an artist, album, song or playlist. You can then listen to these stations on your iPhone or iPad while on the go.
Users can thumb through tracks and mark the ones they like and skip the ones they don't. Premium users get an unlimited number of skips, while free users are limited to "the industry standard." Free users will also see ads within the app.

Former AT&T staffer found guilty of Apple insider trading
A former employee of AT&T admitted to helping insider traders by surreptitiously passing iPhone sales figure and other company secrets. More MacBook Maintenance Malarky: examining the arguments that none of it matters

Apple and Liquidmetal hug it out, lengthen their pact until 2014
The deal between Apple and Liquidmetal was originally supposed to be a short-term fling. Technically, it expired in February this year, less than two years after the couple first met. MacBook Pro Retina screen teardown shows uniform assembly
iFixit has conducted a narrower teardown of the new MacBook Pro, this time concentrating solely on the computer's Retina display. The repair firm notes that the LCD is "essentially the entire display assembly," in that instead of combining with a back case and a sheet of glass in front, the LCD exists on its own, with the Pro's case serving as a frame. The reduced glare of the notebook is attributed to removing front glass from the equation.

AT&T creates virtual work partition for smartphone users
In today's BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) workplace, there's an issue that often arises. Many smartphone owners who are choosing to use their personal devices for work use find it obtrusive when corporate IT departments wish to manage their devices. Now AT&T has introduced a new technology called "Toggle" to allow employees to access work apps from their own smartphones without becoming a security threat.

Apple-owned FileMaker has released Bento 4 for iPad, a new version of its personal database software. Among the core changes is the ability to create personal apps customized for different tasks; elements can be dragged and dropped into place. iFixit examines the MacBook Pro Retina display
Last week, iFixit took apart a Retina MacBook Pro, and, this week, the repair company takes a closer look at the display assembly. In a 16-step guide, iFixit removes literally everything from the display assembly. It's impressive to see all the films, sheets and other components that go into the LCD display.
Not surprisingly, iFixit doesn't assign a repairability score to the component because there is no way to repair the display assembly. The company concludes that "if anything in the display assembly breaks, you'll need to replace the whole thing."

New Bento 4 for iPad adds design tools for customizing database solutions
It's a bit hard to believe that Apple software subsidiary FileMaker has been marketing Bento for more than four years now. The Mac version of the personal database debuted in early 2008, and separate iPhone and iPad versions can be had on the iOS App Store. Today the company is jumping the iPad build from version 1.15 all the way to version 4, with new features to let users customize their libraries entirely on the iPad. Senator agitated over Apple, Google's mapping methodology
Senator Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) recently sent letters to Google CEO Larry Page and Apple chief Tim Cook decrying usage of "military-grade spy planes" used to generate the 3D images for new map applications for both companies. Perhaps by coincidence and perhaps not, Apple today began running a new ad for the iPad (seen below), the first for its market-dominating tablet in a while. Monster Physics is fun for any age
This universal iOS app comes from the "Gee, I wish I had this when I was a kid" category. Monster Physics teaches science, but in a fun way. You create your avatar then assemble a contraption from pieces available in the app. Wheels, cannons and all sorts of parts. You can weld things together and make moving joints. There are 68 items that can be used to make your gadget.
Then your creation gets rendered, and the true laws of physics will apply. Will the object roll smoothly, fly like an airplane or make a space flight? Several of my designs failed, and that is where the learning takes place. After awhile I was literally flying high.

US military looking to create a 'universal remote' for drone fleets
When you've got as many different drone models as the US military, it can be hard to manage things. That's why a group inside the Pentagon is looking to help cut down on unmanned aerial fragmentation, attempting to develop a way to manage all of the different models with a universal drone controller. It's something the military has tried and failed to accomplish in the past, but this time it's taking a more smartphone-esque approach to the matter, according to Wired. The key would be to create an underlying software architecture that allows pilots to control fleets of unmanned vehicles. Microsoft steps up iPad rivalry with 'Surface' tablets
Confirming a number of rumors, Microsoft has unveiled a series of self-branded tablets, referred to as "Surface," at a special event in Los Angeles. The devices appear to be aimed directly at the iPad, sporting a 10.6-inch display and a 9.8mm-thick magnesium chassis that helps keep the weight down to just 1.5 pounds. Liquidmetal, Apple extend ongoing agreement through 2014
An SEC filing by Liquidmetal Technologies on Friday revealed that the company has extended its licensing of the technology to Apple for exploitation in consumer electronics for another two years beyond the original agreement, now in effect until 2014. Apple has made light use of the technology since 2010 on small parts such as the SIM card ejector pin in the iPhone 3GS, but continues to develop the innovation for commercial use.

We're here live at Microsoft's press event in Los Angeles, where it just unveiled not just the rumored tablet you were hoping for, but two tablets: Surface for Windows RT, which has an NVIDIA chip inside, and Surface for Windows 8 Pro, which runs off Ultrabook-grade Ivy Bridge processors. Microsoft didn't just announce one Surface tablet today -- it's announced one for each of the main varieties of Windows. That includes the Surface for Windows 8 Pro, which is slightly larger than its ARM-based counterpart for Windows RT. Mountain Lion Preview 4 updated, adds PowerNap and Facebook

Here at its mysterious, last-minute press event in Los Angeles, Microsoft just confirmed it will sell its own Microsoft-branded Windows 8 tablet under the Surface badge. Measuring just 9.3mm thick, it's built around an angled, all-magnesium VaporMag case that weighs just under 1.5 pounds. Since the success of Scrabblous on Facebook and Words with Friends on the iPhone, there have been plenty of Scrabble-like games out there, where you place lettered tiles on a board trying to spell words for a high score. But Quizboard smartly takes that gameplay, and puts a new twist on it: Instead of spelling words, you're laying tiles and then answering trivia questions, building a path from the edge of the board to the center and trying to score as many points as possible.
