Sprint CEO takes pay cut as investors voice concern about cost of iPhone deal
Sprint Nextel's $15.5 billion gamble on Apple's iPhone will apparently lighten CEO Dan Hesse's proverbial wallet by $3.25 million this year. That's how much compensation Hesse agreed to give back to help placate investors unhappy about the high cost of the company's iPhone deal. Nokia PureView 808 taucht bei der FCC auf, zeigt seine Innereien im Netz

Nokias PureView 808 mit seiner 41-Megapixel-Kamera ist bei der FCC aufgetaucht, obwohl Nokia schon klargemacht hatte, dass es in den USA gar nicht herauskommen soll. Kann uns natürlich egal sein, denn im Rest der Welt soll es noch in diesem Quartal rauskommen, in Indien und Russland sogar schon im Mai. Natürlich hat die FCC das wahrscheinlich letzte SymbianBelle-Phone auch einmal komplett durchgemessen, alle Ergebnisse davon gibt es nach dem Quelle-Link.

iBook Lessons: Creating Amazon KDP tables of contents on MS Word for Macintosh
For whatever reason, many Amazon authors seem to be under the impression that you can only create a proper table of contents for Kindle Direct Publishing on Windows, not the Mac.
Having just uploaded our newest book (Getting Ready for Mountain Lion) to Amazon, Steve Sande and I have invested a lot of time learning the quirks of KDP and its tools, as well as those for iBooks (but more about that in another post). FBI reportedly pressing for backdoor access to Facebook, Google
Investigators at the FBI supposedly aren't happy that social networks like Facebook or Google+ don't have the same kind of facility for wiretaps that phones have had for decades. If claimed industry contacts for CNET are right, senior staff at the bureau have floated a proposed amendment to the 1994-era Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) that would require that communication-based websites with large user bases include a backdoor for federal agents to snoop on suspects. 15 suggestions for iOS 6
I've been writing these posts for the last couple of years, usually always before WWDC, as mini roundups of what I, my colleagues, and readers want to see in the next iOS release. However, as releases go on it gets harder and harder to put together lists of major features I'd like to see in the next iOS.
That's because iOS has now become a fairly developed OS capable of doing most of what you'd ever need it to do. I mean, remember when multitasking or copy and paste were the big feature requests? What about improved notifications? Wireless sync? Folders?

HBO Go and Max Go get Android 4.0 phone support, skip tablets for now
Those with Android 4.0 phones like the HTC One X have been left out of watching HBO Go and Max Go on the road so far. Handschuh übersetzt Zeichensprache in gesprochene Sprache (Video)

Zeichensprache funktioniert nur bei denen, die sie auch verstehen, was naturgemäß oft zu Kommunikationsproblemen führt. Ein paar Studenten an der Cornell University haben einen Datenhandschuh entwickelt, der die Zeichensprache im amerikanischen Dialekt ASL in gesprochene Sprache übersetzt. Dazu ist er mit insgesamt neun Flex-Sensoren, vier Kontakt-Sensoren und einem Accelerometer ausgerüstet, die die Fingerbewegungen drahtlos an einen Rechner schicken, der sie dann interpretiert und per Text-to-Speech zuerst in Buchstaben und dann in ganze Worte übersetzt

Apple referenziert OpenStreetMap in iPhoto-App

Facebook Messenger mit Standort und Lesebestätigung
Als Alternative zu herkömmlicher SMS, Apples iMessage oder anderen Programmen für Sofortnachrichten bietet auch Facebook eine Messenger-App. Mit dem Update auf Version 1.7 wird die Software um Lesebestätigung und Standorterkennung ergänzt. Facebook Messenger wird als separater Download neben der beliebten Facebook-App angeboten, ist in der Version 1.7 immernoch kostenlos und 5,1 MB groß. Adobe bringt Flash-Sicherheitsupdate für alle Plattformen, Internet Explorer-Exploit schon da

Adobe hat ein Sicherheitsupdate für den Flash Player veröffentlicht, um ein Sicherheitsloch in allen Plattformen zu schließen. Das Update für Windows, Mac, Linux und Android fixt ein Problem, das zum Absturz des Flash Players führen und einem Angreifer Kontrolle über den Rechner ermöglichen kann. Adobe empfiehlt ein sofortiges Update und erwähnt, dass es bereits einen Exploit für Internet Explorer auf Windows gibt, der die Lücke nutzt. XCOR Lynx propulsion tech tests well on motorcycle, suborbital trip still pricey
Before parting with $95,000 to secure a spot on the Lynx suborbital flight, you'd want to make sure the spacecraft was safe, right? XCOR doesn't blame you: it recently tested out its piston pump technology on a Triumph Street Triple motorcycle with great results. Sure, it's not the same as flying to the edge of space, but the Triumph has the same cylinder arrangement as the Lynx's liquid oxygen and kerosene fuel pumps and develops a similar amount of horsepower. It's also loads cheaper than testing in the laboratory. AT&T CEO: Unlimited data was a mistake, iMessage a threat
AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson shared some thoughts on his relationship with Steve Jobs, the iPhone and the way the device continues to shape his company during an on-stage interview at the Milken Institute's Global Conference earlier this week, reports The New York Times. Facebook Messenger update to v1.7, adds free texting
Facebook has updated its iPhone and iPod Touch app Facebook Messenger to version 1.7, primarily adding the ability to text friends for free using one's existing data plan. This extends the program's ability and enables messages to reach friends even if they don't have the Messenger app on their own device, either on the web or directly on their phone. The update also adds the iChat- and iMessage-like "typing indicator" that lets a user know when someone is replying.

Adobe issues Flash plug-in, player 'critical' updates
A "critical" security issue that can cause the Flash plug-in to crash and allow a malicious program potential access to the system is addressed in the latest Adobe security update for both the Flash player standalone program for CS users and web browser plug-in for Macs, Windows and Android systems. Users are strongly advised to upgrade to version 11.2.202.235 on Macs and Windows, and v11.1.111.8 on Android (version 11.1.115.9 for Android 4.0).

Apple preparing Java runtime shift to Oracle
Apple is now preparing a pair of Java 6 runtime updates for OS X 10.6 and 10.7 that will mark the last Apple-custom versions of Java, handing over all future development and responsibility for Java on the Mac platform directly to Oracle. Apple had already stopped shipping a default version of Java with new Macs beginning with the release of Lion last summer, but had made in-house versions available to Lion users as well as continued supporting the Snow Leopard version.

Judge: Apple can't duck iPhone tracking suit
A lawsuit alleging Apple improperly collected data on iPhone owners will go forward, a judge ruled today. Bloomberg is reporting that the judge rejected Apple's claims that plaintiffs in the case had no standing. The suit centers around last year's revelation that iOS devices were collecting location data while in use, in order to optimize the devices' connective capabilities. The data was never actually transmitted anywhere, but plaintiffs in the trial allege that the data collection continued even after users indicated that they wanted to opt out.

Sprint Nextel CEO sacrificing performance bonuses
Following a loss of profit due to iPhone subsidies to consumers, Sprint Nextel CEO Daniel Hesse said he would take a pay cut this year. Hesse reported his 2012 salary would be cut to repay $346,000 he has already received in performance bonuses, and he will voluntarily surrender additional cash from 2011 and 2012 incentive plans.

Material engineers at Johns Hopkins University have turned to diamonds to change the properties of elements used in phase change memory such as used in CD-RW and DVD-RW discs. Dish Network, AMC dispute could see the network's channels dropped this summer
It wasn't that long ago that Dish Network was proudly offering AMC HD to its customers (especially since DirecTV didn't, which has since been rectified) but now the company is willing to let the network's contract expire this summer, taking new episodes of Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead away from subscribers. Google may be facing a fine potentially greater than $10 million for bypassing Safari privacy controls, according to an insider. An iPhone that started smoking on a flight to Sydney last November has been explained. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau conducted the investigation and found that a misplaced screw within the handset had punctured the battery casing.
