Google Shopping to change formats, charge merchants
It's just about closing time for Google Shopping's free merchant listings. The iconic search engine has traditionally shown us products regardless of a commercial relationship with sellers, but they'll be required to fork over some coin if they want to join the party after the fall. Google Maps to enter 'next dimension' at June 6 event
Google is reportedly sending out invites to a San Francisco event scheduled for next week, and it appears that the event will be focused on Google Maps. The invite, which shows Google's signature map pinpoint looming over the San Francisco coastline, promises invitees that the event will reveal "the next dimension of Google Maps."

Vizio PCs officially launch in June, home theaters look on with envy

NASA's Robonaut 2 shown pushing buttons, firing lasers on the ISS (video)

Verizon's Motorola Xoom to get ICS upgrade on June 4th
Well, it looks like T-Mobile's Galaxy S II isn't the only device that's gotten some Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade news today. Verizon has now also confirmed that its version of the Motorola Xoom will finally be getting an ICS update of its own on June 4th. That will bring the tablet up to Android 4.0.4, and add features like speech-to-text functionality, a customizable launch bar, a new built-in photo editor, and the ability to dismiss notifications with a swipe. Netflix beats Apple in 2011 US online movie revenue
In 2011, Netflix surpassed Apple in terms of US online movie revenue, according to IHS. Netflix's share of the market jumped to 44 percent; by comparison, it had less than 1 percent in 2010. Apple controlled 60.8 percent of revenue in 2010, but even though its revenue has continued to grow, its marketshare has shrunk to just 32.3 percent.

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II getting ICS June 11th
If you've been waiting and waiting and waiting some more for Ice Cream Sandwich to show up on the US variants of the Galaxy S II, it looks like the upgrade is ready to begin trickling in. T-Mobile is the first to announce an official date for its flavor of last year's flagship device, with its version of the GSII rolling out on June 11th. Cathas claims patent infringement by iOS Developer program
A new lawsuit has been filed against Apple and its iOS Developer Program for patent infringement. Delaware-based Cathas Advanced Technologies believes the iOS Developer Program infringes on two claims of a patent entitled "Web-Based Design Software for Keep-Alive Boards," according to Patently Apple. Cathas expects a ìreasonable royaltyî along with a payment with interest for "suffered damages."

Carmageddon will be free (for a day) on iOS
Carmageddon is an old PC game that recently got the Kickstarter treatment, as developer Stainless Games is planning to build a sequel. Not only did the project get completely funded, but the company hit its "stretch goal," so as a result, the game will also come out for iOS when it arrives later on this year.
And that's not all. It will be free on launch day as well. Yes, instead of messing around with UDIDs or special versions, Stainless has just decided to make the game free for a day at launch. Cisco sues TiVo to nullify four DVR patents, claims TiVo's just a big meanie
TiVo is known for being more than a bit aggressive in claiming patent rights for its DVRs, and Cisco has apparently had the last straw. Scientific Atlanta's owner has sued TiVo this week in an attempt to negate four patents that TiVo is allegedly using to bully Cisco and other set-top box makers. Sources: Apple may have trouble moving assembly to US
Apple CEO Tim Cook's suggestion of moving production lines back to the US would be very difficult in the short term, note supply chain sources in contact with DigiTimes. A new version of Netflix's iOS app featuring an updated user interface has been released in the App Store. Version 2.2 includes a new scrub bar that is easier to control, along with a modified subtitles button that reflects changes made to the web based player and a new button for switching between alternate language soundtracks when available. Gartner: Apple turns over inventory every five days
Technology research firm Gartner is always coming up with innovative ways to compare companies and publish their relative ranks in terms of one criteria or another. Last week, Gartner published the results of its 2012 Supply Chain Top 25, and Apple was at the top of the list.
On a scale of 1 to 10, Apple pulled in a composite score of 9.69, about 80 percent higher than second-place company Amazon and a full 436 percent higher than #24 HP. That score is based on a number of factors, including the opinion of corporate peers and Gartner analysts, the weighted three-year return on assets, and inventory turns. AT&T CEO predicts data-only plans within two years
The fact that modern smartphones still actually make voice calls may well come as a surprise to many users happy to use their mobile devices as pocket-sized computers. Carriers, on the other hand, seem content to keep the "phone" in smartphone. AT&T's Randall Stephenson told an investor conference this week that he sees a time in which carriers offer up data-only options for subscribers -- a time that may well come in the next two years or so. The CEO said he'd, "be surprised if, in the next 24 months, we don't see people in the market place with data-only plans." It's hardly an announcement, but it certainly comes from a guy who knows a thing or two about where the industry is headed.

Bei Casual Games funktioniert natürlich noch alles dufte, bei komplexeren Spielen werden Touchscreenbedienungen allerdings schwierig und enervierend. MOGA von Power A ist ein richtiges Gamepad-System, das genau diese Lücke ausfüllen könnte. Vor allem bringt es auch den alten, leicht bratzigen Charme eines Mega Drive zurück auf die Bildfläche. A hands-on reconsideration of the Newton
Harry McCracken over at TIME Techland has written a beautiful piece about a 20-year-old piece of technology that was ahead of its time -- Apple's Newton MessagePad. As he notes, it was twenty years ago this week that Apple CEO John Sculley introduced the Newton to the public at a CES show in Chicago. The device wouldn't actually ship until August of 1993 and would fly for only five years before being axed by Steve Jobs upon his triumphant return to Apple, but it made its mark on the world and on Harry McCracken.
He never had an opportunity to write a review of the Newton, so he purchased a "new in box" first-generation Newton MessagePad H1000 off of eBay and set to work giving this piece of nostalgic technology a fair review.

Apple to acquire Italian digital audio editing software firm Redmatica
Speaking at the recent D10 conference, Tim Cook said Apple is still in the business of buying companies, but he doesn't want to announce these accusations unless necessary. According to a recent Tech Crunch report, Italian startup Redmatica may be the target of one of these quiet buyouts. ETSI chooses Apple design for new nano-SIM standard
The European Telecommunications Standards Institute has approved the use of an Apple design for the new nano-SIM standard for cellphones. Although Apple isn't credited by name, the dimensions of the accepted card -- 12.3x8.8x0.67mm -- match the company's submission. Samsung buys Nanoradio, hints at very low-power WiFi in your next Galaxy
Samsung hasn't had a lot of need for hardware acquisitions as of late, so it's a bit of a surprise that the company has snapped up chipset manufacturer Nanoradio. Neither side has outlined the terms of the deal or the exact plans. Nanoradio is best-known for "ultra low power" WiFi in phones and other mobile devices, however, so we'd venture that Samsung is looking to improve the performance of its own wireless-laden smartphones and tablets. Don't be surprised, then, if your next Galaxy S or Galaxy Tab is a little gentler on the battery while you're on the local coffee house hotspot.

Wir geben zu, In-Ear Kopfhörer passen uns auch selten wie angegossen. Dass wir dann aber 2000 Dollar dafür ausgeben würden um diese Ultimate Ears zu kaufen halten wir doch für unwahrscheinlich. Sehen zwar pompös aus und sind halt für die eigenen Ohren perfekt angepasst, aber selbst die 26dB Krachreduzierung und die einstellbaren Mitten, Höhen und Bässe überzeugen uns nicht wirklich von so einem Preis. Microsoft details Windows Store changes, adds desktop apps, better navigation
Microsoft is opening up about the changes its made to the Windows Store as the premiere date for the new OS draws near. It'll be available in 26 markets (so far) and Redmond's listened to concerns consumers had about getting around. In response, it's added a navigation bar that also links users directly to the apps they already own. StatCounter: Chrome überholt den Internet Explorer beim weltweiten Marktanteil

Sharp zeigt neue IGZO LCD und OLED Screens

Die neuen auf Indium-Gallium-Zinkoxid basierenden LCD Panels die Sharp vor eine Weile angekündigt hatte sind jetzt vorführreif. Bei der Society for Information Display Show in Boston zeigt Sharp die IGZO Panels. Ein 4,9-Zoll 720x128 und ein 6,1-Zoll 2560x1600 Display sind dabei. Doch damit nicht genug, denn sie haben obendrein ein massives 13,5-Zoll OLED mit 3840x2160 QFHD Auflösung dabei und ein flexibles 3,4-Zoll Display. Wir können also weiter größere Auflösungen mit weniger Stromverbrauch und besseren Touchfunktionen erwarten, denn bei Sharp läuft alles nach Plan. Daily iPhone App: Duckers is colorful fun for free
Duckers is a game we've been waiting for quite a while. I first saw it last year at 360iDev, where Retro Dreamer (the same guys behind iOS' Velocispider) showed it to me as a work in progress. But now it's all finished and available on the App Store as a free download.
It's certainly a colorful title, with plenty of cute graphics and fun objects to find and collect as your duck drills into the ground. If anything, I'd say the game is almost a little too easy. While there are a growing number of obstacles to dodge the deeper you go, the gameplay is so casual that it's not too hard to line up your duck just right and grab tons of coins and gems on the way down. Statcounter: Chrome overtakes Internet Explorer in global browser share for the first time
Chrome's share of internet use just inched past Microsoft's Internet Explorer last month, laying claim to king of the web browsers. Statcounter's analytics measured that 32.43 percent of its 15 billion page-views were done on Google's browser, while Internet Explore took 32.12 percent and Firefox 25.55 percent. According to StatCounter, an upswing of over 0.6 percent in Firefox use (from Internet Explorer) helped Chrome claim the top spot. The month rounds off some impressive growth for Chrome in 2012, which claimed second place in Statcounter's results at the start of the year. Now, if Google could just get that

New smaller SIM format gets standardized, shrinks 40 percent
ETSI has given the nod to a new SIM format standard, which will be 40 percent smaller than the existing micro-SIM design. Agreeing to the design in Osaka, Japan, the shape will be 12.3mm by 8.8mm and will measure the same thickness as existing SIMs at 0.67mm thick. The design promises to work with existing hardware and appears to fly closer to Apple's suggested size, following plenty of crossed words between manufacturers over the next iteration of the card. Google erringt Sieg im Java-Prozess gegen Oracle

Internet-TV Zattoo erhöht Auflösung und Anzahl der HD-Sender
Zu Ostern startete Zattoo mit den ersten HD-Sendern. Jetzt zur EM 2012 weitet die TV-Plattform das Angebot für die Abonnenten im Web und der App aus. Gratis-Nutzer profitieren während der Fußballmeisterschaft zumindest von einer höheren Auflösung.

Kabel Deutschland setzt Download-Rekord mit 4,7Gbps

Wir haben keine Ahnung womit wir einen Download von 4,7Gbps verarbeiten könnten, aber Kabel Deutschland sieht nach vorne und hat in Schwerin den Rekord gebrochen. Mit einem Setup aus Arris' C4 CMTs und Touchstone CM820S Kabelmodems ist ihnen das bei einer Netzwerkfrequenz von 862 MHz gelungen. Damit können sie sich auch gegenüber der VDSL-Konkurrenz lässig zurücklehnen und sichern die Zukunft von TV Kabeln für Internet Provider. Damit könnte man theoretisch eine DVD in 8 Sekunden runterladen. Piraten in der Schule in der das getestet wurde, dürften aber wohl erst mal nicht wirklich was davon haben.

For our friends in the UK, ITV Player has received a 2.0 update that gives you live access to ITV 1 and ITV 2 over Wi-Fi or 3G. ITV also will provide an extra stream for live events that do not show on either of those channels. For those wanting to catch up on a show, however, that can only be done via Wi-Fi at this time.

ITC judge hints at Apple strength in Samsung patent claims
The ITC judge overseeing Apple's ongoing patent infringement case against Samsung's Galaxy Tab and smartphone lines referred to a famous comedy routine by the comic duo Cheech and Chong as a test for infringement, a possible hint that the judge is favoring Apple's claims. The test refers to a straightforward way to identify a copy: "Does it look like it, feel like it, smell like it?" iPhone 5: Erste Details zu den Innereien

Wir haben jetzt schon genügend iPhone 5 Designs gesehen, aber jetzt gibt es endlich mal erste handfestere Gerüchte von den Innereien. Der Prozessor soll ein S5L8950X sein, wäre also vermutlich nach dem 8940X im iPhone 4S und dem 8945X im neuen iPad ein weiterer Schritt nach vorne. PowerVR SGX543 Graphik und 1GB RAM sind nach 9to5 Mac auch dabei. Kabel Deutschland sets record with 4.7Gbps download speeds
About a year ago, Arris teased a system capable of 4.5Gbps downloads, and while that technology was in the proof-of-concept phase last June, it's beginning to look more like a real possibility. German network provider Kabel Deutschland just notched a new download speed record using Arris' C4 CMTs and Touchstone CM820S cable modems: a mind-blowing 4,700 Mbps (4.7 Gbps). A New York federal judge has given class certification to authors fighting Google over plans for the world's largest digital library. Judge Denny Chin ruled that a class action is ""more efficient and effective than requiring thousands of authors to sue individually." Georgia Tech develops poultry deboning robot / chicken nightmare machine
If you have any chickens in the house, you're going to want to keep them away from the computer. Georgia Tech researchers have developed the device that will haunt their feathered dreams. The prototype Intelligent Cutting and Deboning System has a built-in 3D vision system in order to help it cut and debone a chicken. The robot uses collected data and custom algorithms to help reduce bone fragments and increase yield on birds, whilst ensuring that no fowl with ever get a full night's sleep again. Ruling in Google versus Oracle: APIs are not copyrightable
Further announcements have come from Judge William Alsup's courtroom in the Google versus Oracle case today. The judge has decreed programming APIs to be non-copyrightable. The ruling comes in accordance with existing copyright law declaring "a utilitarian and functional set of symbols, each to carry out a pre-assigned function" non-copyrightable under Section 102(b) of the Copyright Act. Alsup's court is the first court, district or appeals, to have specifically addressed the separate matter of API copyrightability, instead of the complete codebase copyrightability issue.

Judge denies Oracle attempt to toss jury verdict
Judge William Alsup has rejected Oracle's bid to have the jury verdict finding Google to have not infringed on six patent claims overturned in its ongoing legal battle with Google. Alsup's statement, detailing the reasoning behind the denial, argues that there was sufficient evidence to support the jury's verdict absolving Google of some patent violation charges. Microsoft Office 365 launches for government customers
Microsofthas announced Office 365 for Government, its version of cloud productivity software. The specific government version of the suite released in July 2011 uses specific government-only encryption and storage to help soothe concerns about privacy and data security. Other than the government-level encrypted storage, Office 365 for Government is the same as regular Office 365, keeping Exchange, SharePoint, Lync, and the other Office web apps in the cloud, but giving the option of installing a desktop version of the Office 2010 suite as well.

Google lobs antitrust complaint against Microsoft, Nokia in EU, claims they're playing patent footsie
The gloves just came off at Google: the company has just filed an antitrust complaint with the European Commission against Microsoft and Nokia. Its gripe accuses the two Windows Phone partners of playing dirty pool through handing 1,200 wireless-related patents to Mosaid, a Canadian firm which spends most of its time suing the industry over WiFi rather than making products. AMD: Kein monatlicher Catalyst-Treiber mehr

Briefly: MobileMe, White House botnets, Woz backs out
Users of Apple's soon-to-be-defunct MobileMe cloud service have reportedly begun receiving notifications from Apple that the service is on its last legs. A tweet reblogged by 9to5mac shows what appears to be a screenshot of a notificatoin from Apple, warning a user that his MobileMe service will be expiring at the end of June. The Notification directs the user to visit me.com/move in order to migrate data to an iCloud account.

Oracle v. Google: Judge finds structure of Java APIs not copyrightable, renders jury infringement verdict moot
Thought the Oracle v. Google litigation fireworks were over? Well, if you weren't aware, during the copyright phase of the trial, the jury found that Google had infringed the structure, sequence and organization of Oracle's Java APIs. However, at the time, Judge Alsup had yet to evaluate the validity of Oracle's API copyright claims upon which that verdict was based.
