Wireless Emergency Alert system goes live this month, delivers location-based SMS warnings
Last we heard of the federal government's Wireless Emergency Alert system, only Sprint had signed on to deliver the SMS warnings. Now, with the secured participation of all four major carriers and smaller regional operators, that gratis service is set to go live this month, covering nearly 97 percent of active mobile users. Kaspersky denies rumors of working on OS X security
Security firm Kaskpersky Lab is denying claims that Apple has asked it to research vulnerabilities in OS X, a statement reveals. "On Monday, April 14, computing.co.uk published an article titled 'Apple OS 'really vulnerable' claims Kaspersky Lab CTO' that includes an inaccurate quote regarding Apple and Kaspersky Lab," the company writes. Perian posts end of life notice. Mac video enthusiasts weep.
Perian has been a steadfast friend on my computer for years. With Perian, nearly any video format I throw at QuickTime simply works. Perian has been a wonder. It supports AVI. It supports DivX. It supports MKV.
It's been one of the best and most useful tools I have had access to and invariably the first thing I reinstall after any upgrade.
And now, according to a statement by its devs, it's reaching the end of the road.
Today, the Perian dev team announced that the software will no longer be updated. They will release all the source code to Google Code or Github, but the team is moving on.

Lenovo LePhone S899t with ICS reportedly in the works for China Mobile
According to a recent leak on Chinese site PConline, Lenovo's reportedly working on an Ice Cream Sandwich slab with China Mobile said to be on the receiving end of the delivery. Morning outage hit 12 percent of all iCloud users
A Monday morning iCloud outage affected 12 percent of subscribers, or about 15 million people, according to the service's status page. Between 8 and 9:30 AM Pacific time, iCloud email was inaccessible for the affected group. As of 9:42 AM, all services were listed as online.

AT&T stops offering Xbox 360 U-verse bundle until it can deliver an updated version
In a relatively strange fashion, AT&T's quietly pulled the plug on its U-verse kit for the Xbox 360 -- at least for the time being. Rumor: Flexible iPhones in the future thanks to new OLEDs
The coming years could see bending, twisting, and even wearable iPhones and other devices, if The Korea Times is right in its interpretation of one Samsung executive's remarks. Report: Amazon planning front-lit Kindle e-reader for July, new tablet later this year
Certainly it's no great shocker that Amazon's got plans for a new e-reader and tablet later this year. Nor should anyone be particularly surprised at the prospect of a front-lit reader from the retail giant set to compete directly with the latest Nook offering. Time Warner Cable head unfamiliar with AirPlay
Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn A. Britt admitted he is unfamiliar with AirPlay, said a report in the New York Times. During a group interview last Friday, Britt said there was no easy way to get Internet video onto a TV, overlooking AirPlay which easily sends a media stream from your iOS device to your TV using an Apple TV.

Foxconn denies chariman leaked news of Apple TV set
Foxconn is disavowing suggestions that chairman Terry Gou leaked news of an Apple TV set, writes The Next Web. Apple invites Kaspersky Lab to examine Mac security
The CTO of computer security firm Kaspersky Lab says that Apple has asked them to take a look at Mac security, and the malware targeting it. Nikolai Grebennikov says that the "Mac OS is really vulnerable," and that the company's "first investigations show Apple doesn't pay enough attention to security."

Time Warner Cable's CEO doesn't know what AirPlay is, hates set-top boxes

Canon ditching humans, cameras hand-made by robots by 2015
Canon has announced that it'll ditch human production line employees and rely entirely on robots to build its cameras. Several Japanese companies have felt the pinch thanks to the soaring value of the yen and have acted quickly to move production overseas, but Canon has resisted doing the same. Apple movie/TV product placement is on the rise
Does it seem like every TV show or movie you've watched recently has a MacBook, iPad, or iPhone in it? Q: I have a brand new iPod nano and I cannot get iTunes to recognize it. Do these things only work with a USB 2.0 port? My computer knows the iPod is plugged in, but iTunes does not. Octopus keyboard is an upcoming jailbreak tweak that brings the predictive text input of a BlackBerry 10 handset to your iPhone. Mario Hros is the developer who came up with the idea to mix a Blackberry with an Apple and gave iDownloadblog an exclusive first look at his work.

Apple gets another bite, wins appeal to pursue preliminary injunction against Samsung

Sparrow for iPhone 1.2 adds new features, push will be subscription-based
Sparrow for iPhone just received a nice update that marks several items off users' wish lists. Among that is the ability to compose in landscape mode, create/edit labels and swipe between messages, plus additional localization. Sparrow now is available in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Russian and Chinese.
However, the developers announced on Sparrow's blog that they were unable to get VoIP privilege from Apple for push notifications. Sparrow will have push introduced in a future update, but it will be done on Sparrow's side, and the company will charge an annual subscription.

Sparrow 1.2 adds landscape mode, label/folder management
Sparrow has released a new version of its iPhone email client, bringing it up to 1.2. The release makes several important changes, for instance allowing landscape composition for the first time, and navigating between messages by swiping up or down. Foxconn dementiert Aussagen des CEO bezüglich Apple Fernseher
Schon bei der Meldung am vergangenem Freitag war eigentlich klar, dass Foxconn die angebliche Aussage des CEO Terry Gou bezüglich der Vorbereitungen für Apples iTV nicht so stehen lassen konnte.

Best Buy founder / chairman steps down after investigation
Yet more fallout in the case of Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn's sudden resignation last month. Some more light has been shed on those aforementioned "certain issues" we heard about, and now an internal investigation has led to the exit of the big box retailer's founder Richard Schulze as chairman of the board. Schulze will be replaced by Hatim Tyabji, who has served as the CEO of Bytemobile and as chairman of the Best Buy's audit committee. Geekbench is a cross-platform processor benchmarking tool that is used to provide numbers on the relative capabilities of computers with various CPU / GPU combinations. The unofficial iPhone Dev Team has released a new version of redsn0w, its jailbreaking utility for iOS devices. The v0.9.11b4 update lets users restore old IPSW files to A5-based Apple devices, including the iPhone 4S, third-generation iPad, and iPad 2; previously, only devices prior to the iPad 2 could be downgraded, thanks to the limera1n exploit. Apple ahead of Samsung in Japanese market
Data vendor MM Research Institute tracked smartphone sales in Japan and discovered the iPhone is greatly outselling its competitors, says a report in Computerworld. Suppliers prep for new MacBooks, USB 3.0 in MacBook Air
Apple will finally announce updated MacBooks in June, DigiTimes claims. The site quotes supply chain sources, who say that parts shipments are expected to pick up significantly that month as Apple escalates MacBook production. The iPhone Dev Team released version 0.9.11b1 of redsn0w last week that lets you restore IPSWs directly to your iPad 2, iPad 3 and iPhone 4S. This means recent iOS device owners can now downgrade their firmware using the jailbreak tool. This is good news for folks who updated to iOS 5.1.1 or iOS 5.1 and want to go back to iOS 5.0.1. You do need your SHSH blobs from the earlier firmware if you want to downgrade, but Cydia usually saves those files automatically for you. I'm always looking for impressive free apps to show what the iPad can accomplish, and I've done that this week with 123D Catch from AutoDesk.
This iPad app (iPad 2 and new iPad only) allows you to use the iPad camera to photograph any object from a number of angles and elevations. Then the app sends your images up to an AutoDesk server where the object is rendered as a 3D file. You can even create 3D files for large objects, like a building, by moving parallel to it to allow the rendering to display the changing perspectives. Even people can be rendered in 3D if they don't move during the imaging sequence. It's all covered in the included help files and videos.

Yahoo erneut auf der Suche nach einem CEO
Bei Yahoo geht das Stühlerücken offenbar weiter, denn nun wurde der erst im Januar zum CEO ernannte Scott Thompson aufgrund eines ausgedachten Bachelor-Abschlusses entlassen. SDK: Dropbox beugt sich Apples Druck

German court refuses to rule in push notification suit
On April 20, Microsoft fired the most recent shot in it's legal skirmish with Motorola in German court in regards to a series of patent enforcement suits preventing Microsoft (amongst others) from using push notifications. In response to this filing, on Friday morning Mannheim Regional Court Judge Andreas Voss declared that his court is not prepared to rule on Motorola's complaint versus Microsoft in regards to push notifications from the Hotmail service. A new trial is expected.

Apple-Fernseher: Gerüchte um Apple und deutschen Herstelelr Loewe

Adobe: Neue iPad-Apps Collage und Proto
Neben einer neuen Version von Photoshop Touch hat Adobe auch zwei neue iPad-Apps veröffentlicht. Mit Adobe Collage lassen sich Moodboards auf Apples Tablet erstellen, Adobe Proto hilft beim Gestalten von Wireframes.

German TV maker Loewe denies rumor of possible Apple buyout
A German TV maker, Loewe AG, is denying rumors that it has been in talks with Apple about a possible buyout, according to Heise Online. A tip to AppleInsider recently suggested a deal worth $113 million, and that Loewe's board of directors were going to make a decision before May 18th. A Loewe spokesman now insists, however, that there is "absolutely nothing" to the claims.
