Toshiba Excite 10 ICS tablet goes on sale, prices start at $450 for 16GB model
It's been a little less than a month since Toshiba unveiled its trio of Ice Cream Sandwich slates, the Excite 7.7, 10 and 13, and starting today you'll be able to grab one of these for yourself. Apple cuts prices on refurb iPads by up to $50
Apple has further knocked back the cost of refurbished iPads at its online store. The iPad 2 is now available for as little as $319 in the case of a 16GB Wi-Fi model, a $30 price drop. Other models have had their prices reduced by up to $50, such as the 64GB 3G tablet, which is just $629. The only other exception in fact is the 16GB 3G, which has been slashed by $30 to $449.

VeriFone to bring out Square-like payment card reader
VeriFone will release a new card reader that plugs into the iPhone or iPad's 3.5mm headphone input to process payments. A step up from its PayWare solution for hardware, the new device, called SAIL, will be very close to Square's hardware. VeriFone already makes card payment hardware for larger businesses and stores, and is trying to protect this client base from smaller up and comers like Square, BusinessInsider reported.

Grund ist, dass ich derzeit bei einer längeren ZDF-Produktion meine Brötchen verdiene und an mehreren anderen Projekten (mit-)arbeite. Daily iPhone App: Escape from Age of Monsters runs on
You may remember Age of Monsters -- it was a really simple game put together by developers working with artist Jeff Matsuda, featuring some really gnarly art and some rock/paper/scissors game mechanics. Now, Matsuda and his team have come back to iOS for a second title, this time called Escape from Age of Monsters. Twitter makes its mobile site more feature phone friendly
When you look at the latest, greatest devices from Apple, Samsung, Motorola and the like all day, it can be easy to forget that not everyone out there is sporting a smartphone. But feature phone users have thoughts and feelings that need to be tweeted at all times, too. It's a good thing then, that Twitter's seen fit to update its mobile site to help offer a more uniform experience to users with old browsers, low bandwidth and handsets that don't quite fit under the "smart-" moniker. Rimac quells Concept_One doubters, shows its EV supercar's pedal to the metal (video)
O ye unfaithful, believe. For those of you who saw Rimac's preview of its Concept_One electric supercar and were skeptical of that claimed 2.8-second 0-62MPH time given all the leisurely putting around, the Croatian automaker has followed up with a video proving that this isn't your daddy's EV. HTC One X spills its source code, but only for the quad-core half

Apple has dropped its prices on refurbished iPad and iPad 2 units. As noted by MacRumors, original iPad units can be had for as little as $279 for a 16GB Wi-Fi model, with pricing extending up to $549 for a 64GB Wi-Fi + 3G unit. Rovio makes a Mighty Eagle's $68 million in profit in financial squawk

Apple has released a minor maintenance update for iOS devices. Versions 5.1.1 is said to improve reliability when using the HDR photography option from the lock-screen shortcut, while an iPad-specific tweak is designed to enable the device to properly switch between 2G and 3G networks.

Nielsen: Smartphones top devices, Android top OS
A majority of US mobile subscribers are now choosing smartphones over other kinds of handsets, according to new numbers out from Nielsen. Smartphones currently make up 50.4 percent of handsets, up from 47.8 percent in December 2011. Nielsen's report also looked at the most popular operating systems among smartphones, finding that Android was by far the favorite at 48.5 percent of smartphones sold in March. iOS came in second with 32 percent, while RIM's BlackBerry OS was in third with 11.6 percent.

Amtrak conductors to "punch your ticket" using iPhones
Here's a modern twist on a time-honored tradition for train travelers. Since last fall, Amtrak has been training conductors to use an iOS device to scan passenger tickets on some selected routes, including Boston to Portland, Maine, and San Jose to Sacramento, California.

MobileMe customers get free 20 GB of iCloud storage until September
Last year, Apple announced that it's shutting down MobileMe at the end of June 2012. To ease the transition from MobileMe to iCloud, the company offered 20GB of free iCloud storage to all existing MobileMe users. This free storage expires June 30, 2012, but a change in Apple's website, noticed by Macotakara, suggests the company is extending this freebie until September 30, 2012.

New rumor has Apple TV set supporting FaceTime calls, Siri
A "well-placed" source has seen a prototype of Apple's upcoming TV set, claims Cult of Mac. Visually the hardware is said to resemble Apple's current Thunderbolt Display, but with a size "much larger" than 27 inches. Apple update exposes Lion login passwords in clear text
OS X 10.7.3 contains a debug flag which makes system passwords readable, checks show. Depending on the system configuration, people who update to v10.7.3 may have a widely-viewable debug log file containing passwords for all users accessing a system. iPad mit 3G/4G: Vodafone-Kunden müssen APN-Adresse ändern
Besitzer eines iPad mit UMTS-Fähigkeit müssen in den kommenden Wochen mit einer Änderung im mobilen Datennetz von Vodafone rechnen. Um auch in Zukunft unterwegs via GSM surfen zu können, bedarf es daher einer kleinen Änderung am Access Point Name (APN).
Über den APN stellen die mobilen Datengeräte ihre Verbindung mit dem Mobilfunkanbieter her. Bei den iPads im Vodafone-Netz lautete die Adresse in der Vergangenheit pad1.vodafone.de. Die neue Adresse, die auch schon andere Geräte nutzen, lautet hingegen web.vodafone.de.

I am a big fan of Shadow Era, a really solid World of Warcraft-style virtual collectible card game for iOS. It's been out for a little while, and with a few excellent updates and expansion packs released, there's a lot of game here to be had, starting at the low price of free. Amtrak adopts iPhone for ticket scanning
US government railroad Amtrak is migrating to the iPhone for ticket scanning, the New York Times reports. Conductors on some routes have been training on the technology since November; during testing, passengers could submit either a regular ticket or a special barcode loaded on their smartphone. It's no secret that Apple's iPad is making great strides in the business market, with Apple CEO Tim Cook reporting during the Q2 2012 earnings call that about 94 percent of the Fortune 500 are either testing or deploying the iPad in business. Now harmon.ie is releasing social software to make Microsoft's SharePoint collaboration software usable on the iPad and iPhone.

Evernote buys out handwriting app Penultimate
Cloud-syncing note service Evernote has purchased handwriting-recognition app Penultimate, SlashGear reported. Penultimate will continue on as a standalone app, at least for the time being, and its creator, Ben Zotto, will join Evernote to work on integration of the two services. Passwords stored in plain text after Lion update
Legacy FileVault users (those who used FileVault before Lion) running a recently updated version of Mac OS X Lion should consider changing their login passwords. According to a report in ZDNet, an Apple programmer inadvertently left a debug flag in the latest 10.7.3 version of Mac OS X that turns on a system-wide debug log file. This log file stores the user's login passwords in plain text and is located in an unencrypted area.
Any user with admin or root access can read this file, grab the login credentials and access your encrypted data. If you use Time Machine to backup your system, this log file is also available from your archive.

Nielsen: Over 50 percent of US mobile users own smartphones, Android and iPhone sitting pretty
Smartphones crossed an important milestone in March, based on Nielsen's estimates. The Genius Bars at Apple Stores are now in some cases replacing black iPhone 4s with with equivalent iPhone 4S models, 9to5Mac claims. Recently it was said that Geniuses were replacing broken white, GSM 16GB iPhone 4s with 4S units instead, owing to shortages of the former. Taiwanese supply chain news source Digitimes is reporting that Apple may be prepping a MacBook Air priced at $799 for Q3. According to its sources in the upstream supply chain, Apple may be positioning itself to address a renewed push by Intel to kickstart sluggish ultrabook sales to date. Intel is said to have put in place ambitious sales targets of 20-30 million ultrabooks for 2012, driven by pricing taking the second wave of ultrabooks below the $700 threshold.

Mobil-Spiele: 84 Prozent des Umsatzes in den USA für iOS-Games
Der Marktanteil von Android mag zumindest unter den Smartphones deutlich über dem von Apples iOS liegen. Dennoch lässt sich mit der Entwicklung von iOS-Apps deutlich mehr Geld verdienen – was aktuell eine neue Studie zu Mobil-Spiele-Umsätzen verdeutlicht.
Die Organisation Newzoo hat 17.000 Menschen befragt und hochgerechnet, dass es in den USA mittlerweile 101 Millionen Benutzer von Mobil-Spielen gebe – 34 Prozent mehr als im Vorjahr. 37 Millionen würden für die Spiele auch bezahlen – 35 Prozent mehr als im Vorjahr.
