Samsung Game Hub, Video Hub hands-on (video)
Sad that Samsung's rumored S-Cloud didn't appear on the scene? Well the arrival of the company's new Video, Game and Music hubs might heal the wounds. Rather than a unified service, the Galaxy S III will have access to three separate stores that will offer an alternative to Google Play. New lawsuit accuses Apple of double-billing on iTunes
A New York resident, Robert Herskowitz, has filed a class action lawsuit against Apple, accusing the company of double-billing for purchases on the iTunes Store. Herskowitz recently bought the Adam Lambert song "Whataya Want From Me." Submitted court documents claim that after discovering double-billing for the track, Herskowitz immediately contacted Apple, only to receive an automated message telling him saying "[Apple is] reviewing your request and will send you a personal response soon."

Logitech intros new Solar Keyboard Folio for iPad
Logitech has been hitting the news a lot lately, first with their Ultrathin Keyboard Cover (US$100, and -- ahem -- we're still waiting for a review unit) and now with the Solar Keyboard Folio ($130, available for pre-order).
The new case is of the familiar folio style, flipping one way for typing and another for viewing media. It also features the popular "magnets in the cover" trick to turn your iPad 2 or third-generation iPad on and off with a flick.
Logitech's marketing materials say that the Solar Keyboard Folio's Bluetooth keyboard will last for two years of typing two hours per day

Samsung Galaxy S III launching on Vodafone, Orange, O2, T-Mobile and Three in the UK
While we wait for the LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy S III to arrive in the US this summer, UK punters will have opportunities to preorder the new flagship device starting right away on these carriers: Vodafone, Orange, O2, T-Mobile and Three. Samsung Galaxy S III gets benchmarked, shows plenty of promise
We're here on the floor at the Samsung Galaxy S III launch and we've just managed to get some alone time with the unit to get some benchmarks. Now, let's stress that the handset is a pre-production model, so we can't take these as gospel truth, but it's a good indication of how powerful that Quad-Core Exynos really is. The only thing that isn't working is SunSpider, since our results just didn't tally with the other tests available, so hopefully it's just a quirk. Apple adds 10 new language localizations to iTunes Connect
Apple has updated the App Store localization support in iTunes Connect with 10 more languages, a developer bulletin indicates. These include Norwegian, Turkish, Finnish, Danish, Indonesian, Malay, Thai, Vietnamese, Greek, and traditional Chinese. Through the expanded support, the metadata, keywords, and screenshots on App Store pages can now be rendered more appropriate to a region.

Apple hit with class action lawsuit over iTunes double-billing
Apple has been hit with another class-action lawsuit for double billing customers in the iTunes store.
New York resident Robert Herskowitz claims Apple charged him twice for the single "Whataya Want from Me" by Adam Lambert. Herskowitz says he contacted Apple and got an automated response telling him his request was being reviewed. The the message he received from Apple wasn't so friendly.
"Your request for a refund for 'Whataya Want from Me' was carefully considered; however, according to the iTunes Store Terms of Sale, all purchases made on the iTunes Store are ineligible for refund. This policy matches Apple's refund policies and provides protection for copyrighted materia

Analyst: Apple's Walmart, Target stores-within-stores to gro
Apple is likely to increase its footprint outside of its existing Apple Stores, according to analysts at Piper Jaffray. The iPhone and iPad maker is looking to expand on pilot projects that have seen Apple mini-stores popping up in select Walmart and Target stores. Taken nationally, such a move would tremendously expand Apple's retail reach, as the two big box retailers have significantly more rural distribution than does Apple.

At the very tail end of its Galaxy S III event, Samsung promised one more surprise -- and what it gave us was a special retail strategy. Samsung launches new services for the Galaxy S III: Music Hub, S Health and more
Samsung has just taken the wraps off of its highly anticipated Galaxy S III and, in a move similar to Nokia's efforts with the Lumia line, decided to package in some of its own services to further differentiate itself from the competition. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and TT Games have announced the launch of LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 for iOS devices. The game takes players through the finale of the Harry Potter story and features a special interface that has players use touch gestures to cast spells, change characters, and duel. Additionally, the game includes Dueling Club expansion that allows players to to master advanced dueling skills against a host of famous witches and wizards including Professor Snape, and Lord Voldemort. A newly-discovered USPTO patent from Apple reveals some interesting technology that could grace future iPhones and iPads. Unlike some of the company's older haptic feedback patents, this one takes things a little further by introducing variable textures and other feedback translating to a user's finger. Samsung Galaxy S III gets an early exclusive on Flipboard, coming to other Android phones in 'coming months'
It looks like you can now add one more popular iOS app to the Android ranks -- sort of. Samsung has managed to get an exclusive version of Flipboard for its just-announced Galaxy S III smartphone, and the folks at SlashGear have already taken it for a quick spin. The short version: it's a lot like the iOS app, with the notable exception of some widgets that you can add to the phone's home screen. Whenever we take a group photo, it's always a pain to have to go and email a copy to everyone afterwards. Apple and Samsung earn 99 percent of mobile phone vendor profits
While the two big smartphone vendors, Apple and Samsung, are battling it out in the courtrooms, they're still in total control of operating profits. Horace Dediu of Asymco has just published his analysis of operating profits for the top eight mobile phone vendors and found that Apple and Samsung together pulled in 99 percent of the profits in the first quarter of 2012.
Apple had the largest share of that total, with a full 73 percent of the profits made by the top mobile phone vendors. Only Apple, Samsung, and HTC made a profit in the first quarter of 2012, and HTC's share was a tiny 1 percent. US judge tells Apple, Samsung to trim down patent lawsuits
In much the way that a parent might tell two fighting siblings to quit being overly dramatic, a U.S. judge has ordered Apple and Samsung to simplify their patent lawsuits by Monday in order to start a trial on July 30, 2012.
Judge Lucy Koh of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California told the companies to slice the patent infringement and other claims to the point that a jury can not only understand what's going on, but judge the issues in a single trial. This was the second time that the judge had asked the companies to reduce the claims to a manageable level.

IDC: Apple makes big gains in tablet market, Android stumbles
Research firm IDC predicted there would be a steep drop off in tablet shipments during Q1 of 2012. Following the surge of sales during the holiday season, a fall of 34 percent, while certainly staggering, is hardly surprising. But there's bad news: shipments failed to meet even those bleak predictions. Shipments fell by 38.4 percent, thanks in large part to Android slates stumbling dramatically. After a reasonably impressive holiday season, IDC expected Android would continue to make inroads in the market. Analyst: Apple may delay television launch until 2014
Despite rumors of an Apple television set launching this year, JP Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz has cast doubt on the imminent timing. The investment bank has reportedly failed to find any evidence of a "TV-related product launch" in the near future, though Moskowitz does admit that Apple may "radically alter the TV landscape" if the reports surrounding an HDTV prove accurate.

Rumor has next iPhone taller, thinner, with flat metal back
The new iPhone will be taller and thinner, and have a flat, primarily metal back, iLounge claims to have learned. Rough dimensions are said to be 125x58.5x7.4mm, adding an extra 10mm in height, while cutting thickness by almost 2mm. The metal will allegedly not cover the entire back but just a middle section, somewhat resembling the look of current iMacs. Apples Marktanteil im Tablet-Markt wieder gestiegen
Laut neusten Marktzahlen von IDC (International Data Corporation) konnte Apple im vergangenen Quartal im Bereich der Tablet-PCs wieder seinen Marktanteil deutlich ausbauen. Im vierten Quartal 2011 war Apples Marktanteil noch gesunken, nachdem Amazon mit dem Kindle Fire in diesen Markt vordrang. iPhones, iPads increasingly subject to search warrants
iPhones and iPads are rapidly becoming a primary computing device for many users. As such, they're increasingly subject to search and seizure by legal authorities, according to GigaOM.
The first time a search warrant was issued for an iPhone was shortly after the device debuted in 2007. Since then the numbers have increased steadily. According to the US Public Access to Court Electronic Records (or PACER), there have been 50 cases in which "iPhone" was listed. Additionally, this year's warrants have already outnumbered those issued in 2009.
Authorities seized an iPad for the first time last year.

TSMC schraubt 28nm ARM Cortex-A9 Chips auf 3.1GHz

Und weiter geht es in der Prozessorspirale. Etwas unerwarteterweise hat TSMC in Taiwan einen Dual-Core Cortex-A9 unter 3,1GHz laufen lassen. Normal wären 2GHz gewesen. Damit ist der Chip ca. zweimal schneller als die 40nm Variante. Bis es zur Marktreife in Handys und Tablets kommt ist es wohl noch was hin, aber wir freuen uns schon mal auf erste ARM-Desktops und Notebooks.

It seems like almost every day that we receive a press release announcing Verizon or AT&T is planning to expand its LTE coverage to three, five, eleven new markets. But in some remote pockets of the country, you'd be lucky to latch onto even a solid 3G signal. TSMC ramps 28nm ARM Cortex-A9 chip to 3.1GHz, gives your desktop jitters
We know TSMC's energy-miser 28-nanometer manufacturing process has a lot of headroom, but the company just ratcheted expectations up by a few notches. Lab workers at Taiwan's semiconductor giant have successfully run a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor at 3.1GHz under normal conditions. That's a 55 percent higher clock speed than the 2GHz maximum that TSMC normally offers, folks, and about twice as fast as a 40nm chip under the same workload. Don't expect that kind of clock speed from your next smartphone or tablet, though:

TeleHuman: zylindrischer 3D-Projektor mit sechs Kinects (Video)
Das Problem bei 3D Displays ist ja, dass sie nicht wirklich 3D sind, will sagen es gibt zwar eine gewisse Tiefe, man kann aber nicht um die Dinge herumlaufen. Wissenschaftler am Human Media Lab der kanadischen Queen's University haben diesen Projektionszylinder gebaut, der genau das zumindest für Menschen erlaubt. Das zylindrische Display bildet den Menschen so ab, als stünde er mittendrin, wobei das Bild aus einem Zusammenschluss von sechs Kinects erzeugt wird. Neben der Anwendung als Telepräsenz-Hologramm haben sie das gleiche Prinzip mit BodiPod als anatomisches Modell eines Menschen realisiert, dessen Schichten bis auf die Knochen mit Gestenkontrolle abgepellt werden können. Traveling exhibit to display Steve Jobs patents
Steve Jobs fans in the Washington, DC area will want to check out an exhibit of his patents. Jobs had more than three hundred patents to his name, and 312 of them will be on display at the S. Dillon Ripley Center, which is part of the Smithsonian Institute.

Bereits bei den gestrigen Bildern einer MSI GeForce GTX 670 fiel auf, dass die Stromanschlüsse ungewöhnlich platziert waren. Pop Video has started taking pre-orders for its iPhone pico projector. The $99 is shipped by Crucial.com on behalf of well-known semi-conductor maker Micron Technology. Daily iPhone App: Junk Jack builds something special
I have flown over 6,000 miles in the last two days -- on Monday, I left Prague to fly back to London, and then yesterday, I jumped on a plane to come back home to Los Angeles. And through it all, Junk Jack was there for me. The game has been out for a while now, and you might have passed over it previously as a 2D Minecraft or Terraria clone (which it basically is). But especially with the recent update, Junk Jack has carved out a major niche of its own, and it now stands as the best sandbox game I've ever played on a mobile device.
You may know how these games work by now. You start in a wild, untamed world with nothing, and then start digging down to see what kinds of resources you can find

Analyst: Vorstellung eines Apple-Fernsehers in diesem Jahr unwahrscheinlich
Geht es nach den Investmentbänkern von J.P. Morgan sieht es mit einem Start des sagenumwobenen Apple Fernsehers im Jahr 2012 schlecht aus. Samsung Series 9 Ivy Bridge Ultrabook: Angekündigt aber für wann?

Samsung hat mit dem Series 9 Ultrabook mit Ivy Bridge Prozessoren sicherlich alles richtig gemacht. Mit Dual-Core 1,7GHz Core i5 3317U CPU und Intel HD Graphik 4000 mit HM75 Express Chipset geht es dabei vor allem um Effizienz. 128GB SSD und 8GB Arbeitsspeicher runden das neue Ultrabook ab. Electronic Arts throwing kill switch on iOS Rock Band [U]
Update: Electronic Arts has now issued a statement saying that "Rock Band for iOS will remain live -- the in-app message users received yesterday were sent in error. We apologize for the confusion this caused," and added that it will share additional information "as soon as possible." EA had in fact put up a notice on its website that it was suspending support of Rock Band as of May 31st, and users received a message that the game would no longer be playable (see picture, below). Scheint so als wird Live für Windows 8 und die neuen Windows Phone Varianten als Name komplett abgeschafft und nennt sich jetzt nur noch Microsoft Account. Die verschiedenen Services bekommen jetzt ein schlichtes "App" als Zusatz und werden über alle Plattformen hinweg verschmolzen. Vielleicht wäre es an der Zeit auch die Services mal auf eine Seite zu integrieren, und auf die klassisch verschiedensten Anlaufstellen wie Hotmail, Skydrive und Live.com zu verzichten. Logitech Solar Keyboard Folio: iPads grüne Tastatur
Keine Frage, ein iPad schreit gelegentlich nach einer Tastatur. Und wenn man schon die Arbeitsbedingungen bei Foxconn auf dem Gewissen lasten hat, dann kann man wenigstens etwas für den Rest der Umwelt tun. Vonage reports $14 million in income, loses 19,000 subscribers
Vonage may have raked in $216 million in revenue, netting itself $14 million in profit, but things still seem to be heading in the wrong direction for the company. We're not even talking about the sharp decrease in net income -- the $350 million made in the last quarter was thanks in large part to a one-time tax benefit. Nikon D3200 ships at Best Buy

Google's Language Immersion Chrome extension translates random text to teach foreign lingo
Berlitz may be the best way to learn a foreign language, but most of us have neither the time nor the ability to fully immerse ourselves in the vocabulary of another country. Google Docs adds 450 fonts and 60 templates, sadly includes Comic Sans
Google Docs has lagged behind offline apps in the number of fonts and pre-made layouts to choose from, but that's just changed with a much larger catalog for both. More than 60 new templates and 450 fonts are now on tap to use in your presentations and reports. MIT and Harvard announce edX web education platform, make online learning cheap and easy
We'll forgive you if you failed to take MIT up on its offer take its courses for free when it rolled out its MITx online learning platform last year. However, Harvard took notice of its efforts, and has joined MIT online to form the edX platform and offer courses and content for free on the web. Gameloft set to offer 11 games on BlackBerry 10 platform at launch, more to follow
Hot off the heels of the BlackBerry 10 exhibit, RIM announced a partnership with Gameloft that will see the developer offer a number of mobile titles by the time the new platform launches. Briefly: SalesVu updates, Lensbaby sells Pro Effects Kit
SalesVu has updated its mobile payment application for iPhone and iPad to version 2.0, enabling additional retail-related functionality. Employee shift management, barcode scanning, and receipt printing have been added, along with a simplified end-of-day process. Food service users can split checks and relay orders to the kitchen through the app. SalesVu made the updates while facing competition from competing payment system Square, which is reportedly aiming for a $4 billion valuation.

Electronic Arts throwing kill switch on iOS Rock Band
Discovered earlier today by Reddit users, publisher Electronic Arts is remotely deactivating all iOS Rock Band installs on May 31. The developer of the game, Harmonix Music Systems, says it is unaware of the reasoning behind Electronic Arts' shutdown of the game, which relies on no external server support to function. A different version of Rock Band, Rock Band Reloaded, released in December of 2010, is unaffected by the discontinuation of the original title.

Toshiba AT330 gets FCC approval, on track for June 10th launch date
Toshiba's 7.7-inch and 10.1-inch Excite tablets (known also by their respective model numbers, AT270 and AT300) have had their time in the FCC spotlight, and now it's the 13-incher's turn.
