Apple at work on first external beta of OS X 10.7.5
Apple is far enough into development of OS X 10.7.5 that it's on the verge of releasing the update's first external beta, AppleInsider sources say. A small group of Mac developers are expected to get a beta within the next few days. The general development community should get the software shortly afterward.

Sprint's early 4G LTE network tested in controlled conditions, hangs with the big boys
Sprint doesn't have much time to meet its goals and get its 4G LTE network up and running by mid-2012. The Now Network is definitely getting closer, though, and just gave PCMag the chance to test its fledgling LTE in Atlanta. Average speeds on the downlink sit squarely in between AT&T and Verizon, at 9 to 13Mbps, despite Sprint having to use 5MHz channels half as large as what AT&T can muster in some cities. Vodafone gets green light to buy Cable & Wireless, goes on a high-fiber diet
Vodafone has succeeded in its attempt to buy Cable & Wireless in a bid to become the UK's second largest telecoms company. Netflix defends changes to API, terms of service
Netflix has issued a statement clarifying some controversy over changes to the video service's API and terms of service, according to The Next Web. The changes, announced last Friday, initially appeared to severely restrict the ability of developers to make money on apps using the API, furthermore removing access to data such as rental histories. Some worried that it could effectively put a halt to apps used to make recommendations or add titles to a person's Instant Queue.

Intel designs neuromorphic chip concept, our android clones are one step closer

Achtung: Vermeintliches “Microsoft Word 2012″ für iOS ist ein Fake
Manchmal fragt man sich schon, wer bei app store für die Freigabe der Apps verantwortlich ist. Im aktuellen Fall hat es ein Entwickler geschafft, eine App mit dem Namen “Microsoft Word 2012″ im App Store zu veröffentlichen.
Die App, bei der es sich angeblich um Microsofts Textbearbeitung handelte, war zum Glück nicht lange verfügbar. Für stolze 10 US-Dollar war die App kurzzeitig im App Store erhältlich, nur um vergleichsweise schnell wieder zu verschwinden. Wie es die App überhaupt in den Verkauf geschafft hat, bleibt allerdings offen.

NEC LifeTouch L unveiled: Android 4.0 tablet keeps it thin and light (video)

Facebook tackles 'major update' for iOS SDK, buys Face.com
Facebook has announced that it is developing a "major update" up to its software development kit for iOS. iOS-Apps: Apple verlangt ab Juli große Grafiken
In einer Mail an seine Entwickler weist der iPhone-Hersteller heute auf die ab Juli 2012 geänderten Anforderungen hin. Die App-Symbole neuer Apps und Cover-Grafiken von Zeitungskiosk-Anwendungen müssen größer werden.
Aktuell empfiehlt Apple lediglich, dass die hochauflösenden Icons eine Größe von 1.024×1.024 Pixeln haben sollten. Ab Juli wird aus der Empfehlung eine Voraussetzung. Dann müssen die Icons der Apps, die neu eingereicht werden, mindestens diese Auflösung aufweisen.

Google completes buyout of Magnolia Broadband patents, puts a little extra protection under its belt
Magnolia Broadband revealed that Google was buying some of its patents at the start of June, but to say that its confirmation was brief would be an understatement. It's being more verbose now that the transaction has been cleared: Google now owns over 50 patents for beamforming wireless signals. Magnolia characterizes the techniques as important to making the best use of cellular connections, which could well be helpful to a company that just bought Motorola. Vintage Apple I sells for $375,000
A rare piece of Apple history is no longer on the market. Last Friday, Auction house Sotheby's sold a working Apple I computer for US$374,500. The vintage computer sold for more than twice its estimated value after a bidding war broke out between two bidders, according to a CNN Money report. The lucky winner was an anonymous telephone bidder who will walk away with one of only six known units. Apple originally produced 50 Apple I's and the other 44 are missing.

Celestica phases out BlackBerry-related production for RIM

China conducts its first crewed spaceship docking, gives southeast Asia its place in space

At first glance, you wouldn't think a Square reader could substitute as a reel-to-reel player, but it does and Evan Long has a video to prove it. Before you start calling shenanigans, remember that the Square reader is nothing but a magnetic head designed to read the magnetic strip of a credit card. Nook Simple Touch hacked to run classic Macintosh OS
A hack has allowed Macintosh OS to be installed on the Nook Simple Touch. Blogger Mike Cane last year wrote about an "impossible dream" to make a Nook Touch run an early Mac OS build. The vision eventually became a reality, following a report in February that someone had successfully installed Macintosh emulator Mini vMac on the device.

Hon Hai/Foxconn plans deeper investments in Sharp
Hon Hai -- better known as Foxconn -- is in talks to buy more shares from Sharp, according to company chairman Terry Gou. Reuters reports that Gou revealed the information at the company's annual meeting on Monday; he specifically noted that Hon Hai is taking advantage of a recent drop in Sharp's share price. "When we [first] bought [in March], Sharp's shares were 550 yen, now it is 400 something. It's been dragged by the macro environment. Apple removes hints of future products from a key file in iOS 6
Once upon a time eager rumormongers would download the latest iteration of the next generation of iOS, and like examining goat entrails to determine the next Caesar, they would delve into the USBDeviceConfiguration.plist to divine upcoming hardware products from Apple. But, with iOS 6, this is no more. Oh sure, the file is still there (and a previous version jokingly referred to non-existent software), but all traces of upcoming hints have been removed.
Tim Cook wasn't kidding about doubling down on secrecy, and I have a feeling this is but the first snowflake to fall upon the tip of a silent iceberg that will soon seal the leaks bubbling around Cupertino.

Mozilla working on 'Junior' iPad Webkit browser
Mozilla announced that it's working on a browser for the iPad called Junior. Mozilla said it wants to make browsing "more fun, more ergonomic" and hopes to re-think the browsing experience "from the ground up." Entwickler sehen Android weiterhin an zweiter Stelle
Der Android Bereich wird von App- und Spiele-Entwicklern immer noch an zweiter Stelle hinter dem Apple App Store gesehen. Dies ist auch nicht wenig verwunderlich, leidet Android doch im Allgemeinen unter der starken Fragmentierung der Versionen und den vielen unterschiedlichen Hardware-Anforderungen.

Wichtigste Neuerung von Dropbox 1.5 ist die erwähnte Auto-Upload-Funktion: Auf Wunsch kann die Software automatisch über Wi-Fi und auch über eine mobile Datenverbindung alle Fotos hochladen, die sich in der Filmrolle des iPhone oder iPad befinden – oder auch nur die jeweils neuen Fotos. Apple plant Podcast-App für iOS 6
Die seit Montag verfügbare Beta-Version von iOS 6 zeigt eine deutlich schlankere iTunes-App. Die fehlenden Kategorien sollen nach Informationen von AllThingsD ausgelagert werden. Unter anderem wird das neue Betriebssystem eine eigene Podcast-App mitbringen. Hörbücher, iTunes U und Podcasts sind bislang als Unterkategorien in der iTunes-App gelistet. Für besseren Zugriff und Bedienung der Inhalte plant Apple, diese Sparten auszulagern. Unter anderem soll eine Standalone-App für Podcasts ab Herbst auf die Bildschirme der iOS-Geräte kommen.

iPhone bald mit austauschbarer Kameralinse?
Erfinden ist gut, patentieren noch besser. Laut Apples neuester Idee kann die Kameralinse am iPhone künftig ausgetauscht werden. Wenn der Patentantrag bewilligt wird, geht das an keinem anderen Telefon. Der gestern veröffentlichte Patentantrag beschreibt, dass Mobilgeräte mit einem abnehmbaren Rücken versehen werden sollen, sodass Nutzer die Kameralinsen nach Bedarf tauschen können. Für Apple wäre das ein großer Schritt, sind doch bisherige iOS-Geräte immer komplett versiegelt.

How would you change the Orbotix Sphero?
Orbotix's novelty smartphone-controlled robotic cue ball is so fun, even The President has been snapped playing with one. It's a toy, and as such doesn't really serve a function beyond chasing your pets around the kitchen. When we reviewed it, we found that the steering was sluggish and frankly, the novelty wore off pretty quickly. But how about you out there? Four Internet giants forge alliance to counter 'badware'
AOL, Google, Facebook, and Twitter have joined an alliance that was born to counter malicious ads, including malware gateways, ads for scams, and sale links to counterfeit goods. Nonprofit StopBadware, the 6-year-old promoters of the alliance, hosts a clearing house which lists identified websites containing the "bad ware" links.

Samsung to release tube-powered wireless audio dock
Samsung has announced that an upcoming speaker dock, the DA-E750, will be available in the UK and Korea starting June 18th. The dock features a wide array of wireless connectivity options, as well as a vacuum tube-based amplifier meant to improve sound quality.
