AT&T CEO voices regret over iPhone unlimited data model

It's always refreshing to hear the head of a major corporation cop to past mistakes -- particularly in front of a large crowd of on-lookers. AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson admitted some misgivings about the way the carrier handled iPhone data, telling a crowd at the Milken Institute's Global Conference in Los Angeles, "My only regret was how we introduced pricing in the beginning, because how did we introduce pricing? Thirty dollars and you get all you can eat." Stephenson drove the point home by adding, "Every additional megabyte you use in this network, I have to invest capital." German court stays Apple lawsuit against Samsung, postpones another

The Mannheim Regional Court on Friday has suspended an Apple lawsuit against Samsung over a photo viewing patent and has postponed ruling on a pinch-to-zoom case which was scheduled for judgment today.

HP tops Apple in client PC market

According to new figures out from analyst firm Canalys, Q1 2012 saw Apple slip from the top spot in the client PC market. Thanks to a boost in shipments, former number one company HP retook its perch atop the market for at least one quarter. The report, though, may signal troubles ahead for PC manufacturers, as it suggests seismic trends at work in the marketplace.

German court stays, delays separate Apple v. Samsung issues

Germany's Mannheim Regional Court has stayed an Apple lawsuit against Samsung over a photo gallery page-flipping patent, says FOSS Patents. The case is now waiting on the resolution of a invalidation proceeding at the country's Federal Patent Court. Regional courts are noted to stay patent infringement cases only if the defendant shows a high chance of a patent being invalidated.

Swivl-it motion tracker for phones slated for late May

Swivl, maker of the self-titled mount for smartphones with digital cameras that pans to follow a speaker during a voice conference, has introduced a basic version of the gadget, Swivl-it. Unlike the $179 full-blown version, the $129 model doesn't have a digital wireless microphone included and is missing one motor that allows for vertical adjustment. Users can still tilt it by hand, however, but it won't adjust itself as they get up or sit down.

Study: iPad accounts for 95 percent of tablet web traffic

Advertising network purveyor Chitkia has mined advertising impression data and discovered Apple's iPad to have the highest portion of web-use share over any other tablet by a long shot. Over 94 percent of the metered Internet traffic from all tablets comes from the iPad. The next closest competitor is the Samsung Galaxy, achieving a mere 1.22 percent.

Samsung sales injunction won't kick in prior to patent validity check

Stick with us here. A German court has ruled that Samsung will be able to fight to protect the sale of its products before an argument over the actual patent involved in those products is resolved in favor of either company. If that sounds confusing, it's because it is. Usually, in Germany, companies can sue for injunctions before the patents in question are ruled valid or invalid, to stop sales of a certain product immediately. Walmart iPhone price cuts not universal, checks show

The reported Walmart discounts on iPhones aren't in effect across the entire Walmart chain, reports observe. The Verge notes that it managed to find a Walmart in Austin with the same bargain, but four other US outlets had regular prices. 9to5Mac says it called 17 Walmarts around the US, none of which were offering discounts. Star Wars Pit Droids is a fun little Star Wars-themed arcade puzzle game from LucasArts on the App Store. Since because today is May the fourth (be with you), the game is free all weekend long. Smoking iPhone emphasizes importance of authorized repair work

An iPhone self-ignited during a Regional Express flight in Australia due to a faulty repair. According to a Sydney Morning Post article, the smoking phone was spotted by a cabin crew member, shortly after the plane landed at the Sydney Airport on November 25, 2011. The crew member asked the passenger to throw the overheating device into the aisle and blasted it with a fire extinguisher. The iPhone was sent to the US for analysis where it was discovered that a faulty repair created a short circuit in the device. Der macht das gediegene alte iPad zwar nicht schneller, aber sorgt dafür, dass sich die Batterielaufzeit noch mal um einiges verlängert. Am stärksten wirkt sich das bei Video aus, so dass man (bei einer Einstellung von 200nits aka 40% Helligkeit) sensationelle 15,7 Stunden Videolaufzeit bei H.264 720p rausholen kann. Appleís cut-price iPad 2, which it continues to sell alongside its new iPad, has been given a boost with a shift to a new 32nm A5 processor from the original 45nm iteration. Although using fundamentally the same architecture, the die-shrunk version has been shown by Anandtech to draw less power offering significant improvements in battery life. Kindle Fire shipments plunge to less than 750,000 in Q1

After setting the tablet scene alight in Q4 last year with 4.8 million tablet sales and taking the number two position in the market with a 16.8 percent market share, Amazonís Kindle Fire sales fizzled in Q1. For the months of January, February and March this year, Amazon saw its Kindle Fire slide to just a 4 percent market share on the back of less than 750,000 sales. iPad-Nutzer kennen das Problem beim Bearbeiten von langen (und kurzen) Texten: Ohne die vom Mac bekannten Pfeiltasten zur Navigation innerhalb des Textes, fällt es schwierig schnell Veränderungen am Text zu machen. Ein Video des YouTube-Nutzers danielchasehooper zeigt wie Apple dies einfach verbessern könnte. Während das Verfassen von Texten auf dem iPad noch relativ einfach von der Hand geht, ist man bei Änderungen an bereits geschriebenen Wörtern darauf angewiesen, mit dem Finger den Cursor auf das gewünschte Wort zu navigieren. Im Vergleich zum Mac, wo die Pfeiltasten auf der Tastatur dies deutlich vereinfachen, ist dies auf Apples Tablet häufig frustrierend. Dasselbe gilt für das Selektieren von Texten.

NPD quarterly smartphone data questioned

NPD's quarterly market share report was refreshed on May 2, and it listed Android holding 61 percent of the market, with Apple's iOS devices second at 29 percent. At their worst, captchas are impossible to decipher; at their best, they're fun? A startup called Are You a Human has developed PlayThru, an alternative to text-based authentication. Google to authors: sue us individually, not as a class

Search engine giant Google is seeking to have the Authors Guild and the American Society of Media Photographers removed from a half-decade-long lawsuit. In a process that began in February, Google attorney Daralyn Durie informed Judge Denny Chin in Manhattan federal court that authors and photographers would have better individual results on their own. Liquidmetal inventor says Apple 'years' away from casings
