Daily iPad App: League of Evil 2 proves platformers and touchscreens can play nice
There are a lot of awesome games on sale in the Because We May event going on this weekend, but of the titles I've picked up so far, League of Evil 2 is probably my favorite. It's a platformer title, in the vein of Super Meat Boy, in that it's basically a quick and simple romp through a series of quick levels. But while a lot of platformers don't work all that well on the iPad's touchscreen, League of Evil 2 works great. The virtual buttons are not only big and easy to hit, but they're very responsive, and great character and animation designs make it easy to move around the level quickly in very precise ways.

MIT students make Minority Report-style iPad control system
Researchers at the MIT Media Lab have created a Minority Report-style glove and iPad input system for three-dimensional virtual object manipulation called T(ether). The system lets the team use motion tracking on gloves to create and alter virtual items with the iPads used as a point-of-view window to see what the users are manipulating. A demonstration video shows the system having multiple users simultaneously affecting the compter-generated world, both with and without the glove.

Nuance announces Dragon Drive, Siri-like functionality for cars
If you can't get enough of Siri's dulcet tones, then you'll be happy to hear that Nuance -- one of the companies behind Apple's intelligent assistant -- has announced a similar type of functionality that should be coming to cars soon. Dragon Drive replicates the power of Siri so that drivers can initiate a conversation to perform common tasks rather than take their hands off the wheel.
Expected sometime this summer, Dragon Drive lets drivers send text messages, check traffic information, play music, or get directions by just asking. A button on the steering wheel activates the voice recognition so that other discussions in the car don't set off a search.

Microsoft Office for iPad reportedly on track for November release
A recent report from BGR reiterates the earlier claim from The Daily that Microsoft is working on a version of Office for the iPad. According to BGR, Microsoft is bringing the complete Office suite to both the iPad and Android tablets by November of this year. BGR's source claims the version he saw was almost identical to the one leaked earlier this year by The Daily.

Cisco drops Cius tablets after the BYOD crush, plans upgrade to Android 4.0 out of kindness
Cisco had grand plans for a Cius tablet on every fast-paced executive's desk, but those dreams appear to have been dashed not long after getting off the ground. Apple looking to hire engineers at Israel R&D facility
We've heard that Apple intends to step up hiring at a new research center in Israel, and here is more evidence of that effort. Two new job listings have appeared on Apple's site for physical design engineers in Haifa, Israel, showing that Apple is getting serious about building out its new R&D center.

Apple hiring new chip engineers for Israeli development
Apple has started hiring for two new chip engineering jobs in Israel, notes AppleInsider. The company is looking for two "SoC Backend Physical Design Engineers," to be based in the Haifa and Herzliya Pituah regions of the country. People hired for the jobs will be required to handle "physical implementation of a complete SoC [system-on-chip] from net list to tape-out," including aspects like clock and power distribution, and power and noise analysis. US TSA eyeing Macs, iOS devices to assist mission
America's favorite frisking and body scanning team -- the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) -- is about to go Apple. NextGov is reporting that the TSA has put out a request to possibly purchase any number of Apple products to "support specific areas of TSA's Risk Based Counter-Terrorism mission."

An anticipated untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 devices has been released by hacker pod2g and the Chronic Dev Team. Called Greenpois0n Absinthe 2.0, the software is notable not only for supporting the latest version of Apple's iOS firmware, but also reportedly almost all A4 and A5 devices, including the iPhone 4S and the third-generation iPad. Traditionally, support for A5 hardware has been difficult due to changes made by Apple that closed an earlier exploit. Apple's VP of Europe steps down after 12 years
French newspaper Le Figaro is reporting that Pascal Cagni is stepping down from his position as Apple's vice president of Europe. Cagni was hired by Steve Jobs in 2000 and has served as Apple's European VP for 12 years. He was responsible for Apple's explosive growth in the EMEA region, which saw revenue grow from US$1 billion to $19 billion per year under his leadership.

Criterion Games typically makes console games, most notably the Burnout series, in which cars are mashed up in incredibly gorgeous ways across races and other modes. Tweetbot 2.4 mit Stichwort-Filter und Offline-Funktionen
Der äußerst beliebte Twitter-Client für iPad und iPhone wurde gestern erneut um einige neue Funktionen erweitert, die die Nutzung des Sozialen Netzwerks vereinfachen. Neben diversen Offline-Funktionen für Favoriten und die Read-Later-Funktionen, können nun auch Stichwörter ausgefiltert werden.
Bislang bot Tweetbot nur die Möglichkeit, Personen, Hashtags und bestimmte Twitter-Clients aus der persönlichen Timeline zu verbannen. Mit der gestern veröffentlichten Version 2.4 können nun auch beliebige Wörter auf die schwarze Liste gesetzt werden. Das Hinzufügen der nicht mehr erwünschten Stichwörter gelingt über den Mute Filter, der in den Tabs erreichbar ist. Ein Klick auf Bearbeiten + Stichwort ausblenden zeigt den entsprechenden Dialog. Tim Cook declines dividends being paid to Apple employees
Apple's Board of Directors approved a dividend equivalent payment to employees holding restricted stock units, but this won't apply to Tim Cook, says a report in MacRumors. These RSUs vest after a period of time and are usually given to employees to entice them to stay with the company for a length of time.
Tim Cook, for example, was awarded 1.125 million RSUs when he stepped into the CEO position last year. Airfoil Speakers Touch: Theorien um Löschung aus dem App Store
Der App Store kann für Entwickler zugleich Himmel und Hölle sein. Er ist der einzige offizielle Weg, um Apps auf Apples iOS-Geräte zu bekommen. Gleichzeitig ist man Apples Mitarbeitern ausgesetzt, die eine App nicht freigeben oder nachträglich entfernen. Genau dies ist den Machern von Airfoil Speakers Touch gestern geschehen.

Dell Latitude 10 könnte das erste Windows 8 Tablet werden

Es ist schon eine Weile her, dass wir von dem Dell Peju mit Windows 8 gehört hatten, das aber dann einfach ein Windows 7 Latitude ST wurde. Aber jetzt ist ein wahrscheinlicherer Hinweis auf ein erstes Dell Windows 8 Tablet aufgetaucht in einem Slide bei NeoWin. 2GB RAM, maximal 128 SSD und Fingerabdruck-Leser soll es mit Dual-Core Intel Clover Trail Prozessor bekommen, bei einer Auflösung von 1266x768. Mit austauschbarer Batterie (immer gut) soll es zwischen 6 und 8 Stunden durchalten, bei größerer sogar 12. Hinzu kommt noch eine 8 Megapixel-Kamera. Wir sind gespannt.

Apple has made another subtle change to its iOS App Store, dropping the "Game of the Week" and "Staff Favorites" sections on the main page in favor of "Editor's Choice" and "Free App of the Week." The new designation has kicked off naming Chillingo's new Air Mail game and Autodesk's SketchBook Ink drawing app for the iPad, and Facebook Camera and Extreme Skater getting the nod on the iPhone. Apple-Europachef Rücktritt: Pascal Cagni nimmt seinen Hut
Nach einem gestrigen Bericht der französischen Traditions-Zeitschrift Le Figaro, verlässt Apples Europachef Pascal Cagni mit sofortiger Wirkung das Unternehmen. Eine offizielle Bestätigung blieb bisher aus.
Cagni arbeitete bereits seit dem Jahre 2000 in dieser Position für Apple und zeichnete verantwortlich für die Vertriebsbereiche Europa, mittlerer Osten und Afrika. Steve Jobs höchstpersönlich bestellte ihn zum damaligen Zeitpunkt als Nachfolger des vorherigen Europa-Chefs Diego Piacentini.

US TSA seeking $3 million in Apple hardware and services
The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) may purchase up to $3 million in Apple hardware over the next three years. Up to a thousand Macintosh and a thousand iOS mobile devices purchases are planned. The Apple equipment has been declared to be "critical to meet a variety of operational, programmatic, and mission-specific requirements" by the TSA.

X Prize adopts NASA guidelines for protecting lunar heritage sites, Buzz Aldrin punch averted
NASA hopes that one small step by Google's Lunar X Prize will eventually lead to a giant leap in protecting historical sites on the moon. The X Prize Foundation announced that it will adopt guidelines released by the space agency last year to help preserve lunar heritage sites. Briefly: Bing and Nokia, no ICS for Xperia Play, TWC app
Following last year's Microsoft partnership with Nokia, Bing Maps is the latest product to see a benefit. Starting today, users in 24 countries will be able to view active traffic data in Bing Maps as a result of Nokia services integration. Intel funnels $40 million into global network of research laboratories
Like any tech company worth its weight in silicon, Intel puts plenty of cash into research, often partnering with outside labs and schools that are less concerned with turning every project into a multi-billion dollar product. Nissan announces e-NV200 all-electric van, production slated for 2013
So, Chrysler's electric postal van never really took off -- perhaps a few too many mailmen refused to give up those roomy Grumman LLVs -- but now Nissan is giving the electric van concept a go. Apple CEO Tim Cook refuses $75M dividend on restricted stock
Apple earlier today filed an 8-K form with the Securities and Exchange Commission, indicating that the board of directors has decided to give restricted stock holders the same $2.65-per-share dividend they expect to give public shareholders. CEO Tim Cook has requested he not be awarded the dividend, however, costing him an estimated $75 million dollars over the next decade.

NVIDIA touts 30 Tegra 3 smartphones set for this year, teases next-gen Grey SoC with on-board LTE

ASUS Transformer Pad TF300TL hits the FCC with AT&T-friendly LTE
ASUS isn't known for offering its tablets to North American carriers with 3G or 4G; an FCC filing for a cellular-capable Transformer Pad TF300 could be a clue at a break in the WiFi-only trend. Google adds copyright takedowns to Transparency Reports, 1.2 million a month and growing
Google has been publishing what it's dubbed Transparency Reports for some time now -- detailing things like government requests to remove content from search results or requests for users' information -- and it's now added another big chunk of data to them in the interest of full disclosure. Starting today, you can see the number of removal requests it receives from companies over copyright and piracy concerns. HTC One X for AT&T gets unofficial bootloader unlock
No thanks to AT&T, owners of the carrier-branded HTC One X can now unlock their phone's bootloader on the HTCdev website. The process works by altering the handset's identifier, which causes the One X to appear as a Rogers unit on HTC's servers. Boost case for iPhone keeps the battery going
I love my iPhone 4S, but I am one of many who doesn't get great battery life from the phone. Apple has done some firmware updates that 'addressed' the problem, but I think battery life on my phone is still sub-par.
I've looked at a few battery cases, but many were pretty clunky and didn't seem worth the hassle. A friend tipped me to the Boost Case, and I found it on Amazon and gave it a try. Android, iOS account for 80 percent of Q1 smartphone sales
Research firm IDC has published its latest smartphone market-share report, finding Android and iOS to be responsible for eight out of 10 smartphones shipped in the first quarter of 2012. Android captured 59 percent of all sales, while iOS took 23 percent of the 152 million smartphones shipped in the first quarter. Linux phones maintained the same small share held for four quarters. Symbian and Blackberry shipments continued to drop precipitously.

Rumors of a Dell Peju tablet shipping with Windows 8 made the rounds last year, but they died down when the mystery device turned out to be the Windows 7-powered Latitude ST. Aperture update resolves Snow Leopard bug
Apple on Thursday released a minor maintenance update for its photo-editing software, Aperture. Version 3.2.4 is said to improve stability when operating in Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The update also resolves an issue that sometimes prevented the Viewer from correctly updating after a photo had been modified in an external editor.
