Apple Updates iMovie With Support for More Macs [Mac Blog]
Apple has updated its iMovie consumer video editing software with support for additional, older Macs. Previously, iMovie didn't work on Macs that did not have an OpenCL-capable graphics card, including some configurations of the Mid/Late 2007 MacBook Pro, Mid 2007 and Early 2008 iMacs, and the Early 2008 Mac Pro. Apple begins aggressive trade-in program in India to boost iPhone 5c sales
In an effort to boost sales of the iPhone 5c in India, Apple is reportedly implementing an aggressive trade-in scheme whereby users can trade in their old iPhone 4 and receive discounted prices on the iPhone 5c.
Specifically, users who trade in an iPhone 4 are eligible for a $207 discount on both the 16 and 32 GB models of the iPhone 5c.

New York Mulls New Anti-Theft Measures as Smartphone Thefts Continue to Surge
The New York City Council is considering a new measure to help fight iPhone and other smartphone thefts, in the form of a pawn shop bill that would require second hand dealers and pawn brokers to maintain easily accessible electronic records of purchased items, including photographs and serial numbers. Current law mandates non-electronic inventory records. Waze brings social GPS app to Windows Phone today
It may not have received the same amount of buzz as Instagram this morning, but social GPS app Waze is another hugely popular service that's finally reaching the Windows Phone masses today. Apple and Samsung damages trial comes to an end; Jury begins deliberations
Apple and Samsung's retrial on damages came to an end yesterday. Now, the jury is busy deliberating in an effort to determine just how much of the vacated US$450 million judgement Samsung will ultimately have to fork over to Apple.
During the course of the trial, Apple argued that it deserves $380 million while Samsung argued that $52 million would be a more appropriate amount for its infringing activities.
During closing arguments yesterday, Apple attorney Harold McElhinny said that the case wasn't about blindly punishing Samsung, but rather about creating a strong disincentive for further infringement.

Winamp, the media player of your college years, is shutting down next month
Winamp, the AOL-owned mp3 player of yore, will close up shop for good on December 20th, which means you have exactly one month from today to use the service -- if you're still using it, that is. In addition to shutting down Winamp.com, AOL and co. will no longer offer downloads of the media player. It's hardly a surprising announcement, but it's a slightly glum one considering Winamp's popularity in the late nineties and early aughts. Minimalist task manager Begin adds tap-to-edit, new fullscreen mode
Begin is a tough-as-nails to-do list that helps you manage the tasks in your life that are due right away. You are allowed a single list of tasks and each item in your list has three options -- do it today, do it tomorrow or mark it as done. It's simple, but effective.
A recent update (version 1.5) softens the app by increasing the amount of time a task can stay on your list from two to five days. You don't have to do things "right away," you just have to do them in the next few days. One of the biggest improvements is the ability to edit a task by simply double-tapping on an item.

Much as Google tried to get NFC to be the payment form of the future, it seems that the company has realized that many folks are still attached to plastic. Instagram arrives on Windows Phone Store today without in-app image capture or video support
These days, a mobile OS is only as good as its ecosystem, and no company knows this fact more than Microsoft. Its smartphone platform known as Windows Phone has had plenty of growing pains during the first three years of existence, which is mainly related to a limited number of big apps and game titles. Despite these struggles, Microsoft has slowly but surely been able to court heavy-hitting developers -- even if only one or two at a time. Review: Photo Studio HD for iOS
I had high hopes for Photo Studio HD, a universal US$1.99 app that provides an extremely wide selection of tools to edit and enhance photos.
The problem is, I really couldn't import any pictures and truly improve them using the app. The issues started when I opened a landscape image with the result that it lost most of its resolution and looked blurry and blocky. Not good for an app that calls itself Photo Studio HD.
In addition, the app's editing tools are difficult to launch. When you swipe across the scrolling list, sometimes a tool near your finger opens, instead of the expected movement to the next tool.

Apple Campus 2 receives final approval
"Go for it." With those words, Cupertino Mayor Orrin Mahoney gave final approval for the construction of a new Apple campus in his city. Apple will receive its full building permits on November 20 and thereby be free to begin stage one of development.
Phase one includes the construction of the soon-to-be-iconic 2.8 million square foot, circular main building, a 100,000 square foot fitness center and a massive, 120,000 square foot auditorium. A parking garage capable of housing about 2,400 vehicles will also be built, but it will be underground and hidden from sight.
As part of its construction arrangement, Apple has agreed to a reduction in the sales tax rebate it receives from Cupertino. Now, the city will refund 35 percent of sales taxes it receives from Apple-related

ETH hat den schnellsten Computer Europas
In der neuen Supercomputer Top-500-Liste befindet sich unter den schnellsten 10 Supercomputern der Welt neu ein Schweizer. Der «Piz Daint» genannte Rechner steht auf der Liste auf dem sechsten Platz — er ist der schnellste Computer Europas. Das nach dem Berg im bündnerischen Münstertal benannte System der ETH steht im «Swiss National Supercomputing Centre», kurz CSCS, bei Lugano. Der Supercomputer wird für Wetterhervorsagen genutzt.
Das Cray-XC30-System wurde im Frühling 2013 in Betrieb genommen. Das System baut bei den CPUs auf Intel Xeon-E5-Prozessoren, bei den GPUs wird auf Nvidias Tesla K20X gesetzt. Beim für die Top-500-Liste eingesetzten «Linpack»-Benchmark kommen die 5272 Knoten (115’984 Cores) des «Piz Daint» auf 6.27 Petaflops — der Peak lag gar bei 7.7889 Petaflops.

New Virtual Pet App 'Hatch' From 'Clear' Developers Hits the App Store [iOS Blog]
Impending and Realmac Software, the app studios behind popular to-do app Clear, have today released a new app called Hatch. First announced back in December of 2012, Hatch is an ambitious virtual pet app that has been in development for several months. Reminiscent of the Tamagotchi pocket pets that were popular in the late 1990s, Hatch provides users with a virtual iPhone pet called a Fugu. Fugu, which come in an array of colors, are creatures that iPhone owners can interact with in a variety of ways. As with most virtual pet items and applications, Hatch requires users to feed, clean up after, and care for their Fugu.

Galaxy Gears: Wie viele Smartwatches hat Samsung tatsächlich verkauft?
Samsung hat auf die Berichte über die angeblich tiefen Verkaufszahlen der hauseigenen Smartwatch «Galxy Gear» reagiert. Das Unternehmen gab in einem Statement bekannt, über 800’000 der intelligenten Uhren an die Händler ausgeliefert zu haben. Logitech's 'PowerShell' iOS 7 Game Controller Now Available
Following the release of the MOGA Ace Power earlier this week, Logitech has officially announced its PowerShell game controller for the iPhone 5/5c/5s and the fifth-generation iPod touch. The form-fitting controller is made to plug into the Lightning port on a newer iOS device and features console-style controls including a directional pad, shoulder bumpers, and face buttons. The controller also allows for headphones to be connected through an included adapter, and also leaves the volume up/down buttons, ring/silent switch, and power/sleep button of an iOS device fully accessible. Logitech's controller also includes a 1500 mAh battery which will charge an iOS device whiile it is plugged into the controller, and can also be charged simultaneously with a device through the controller's micro-USB port.

Gerücht: Display für grösseres iPad bereits in Produktion
Die Zeitung «The Korea Times» will von einem Manager aus der Display-Industrie die Information erhalten haben, wonach die Produktion für ein grösseres iPad-Display bereits begonnen haben soll. Das spekulierte grössere iPad soll dem Insider zufolge bereits im nächsten Frühjahr auf den Markt kommen.
Der angeblich hergestellte Bildschirm soll über eine Diagonale von 12.9 Zoll verfügen. Die Auflösung des neuen Bildschirms soll gemäss dem Insider annähernd im Bereich von UHD liegen. UHD bzw. 4K entspricht einer Auflösung von 3’840 mal 2’160 Bildpunkten. Mit der deutlichen Erhöhung der Anzahl Bildpunkte erhofft sich Apple angeblich eine weitere Verbesserung der Bilddarstellung. Eine Erhöhung der Auflösung würde aber eine Anpassung der Apps notwendig machen.

Samsung denied mistrial on racial bias claim in Apple case
Samsung requested a mistrial be declared in its trial with Apple over remarks made by an attorney working for Apple in the final moments of closing arguments in the case on Tuesday.As he was wrapping up his closing arguments, Harold McElhinny of the law firm Morrison Foerster, told the jury that, "when I was young, I used to watch television on televisions that were made in the United States."He then named several brands, such as Magnavox, that manufactured their TV sets in the U.S. and had enjoyed a large share of the U.S. TV market."But they didn't protect their intellectual property," he said. Apple erhält Baubewilligung für «Raumschiff» Campus 2
Der Stadtrat von Cupertino hat in der Nacht auf heute in einer zweiten Sitzung die definitive Baubewilligung für den neuen Apple Hauptsitz erteilt. Dank dem Votum des Stadtrates hat die Kommune die rechtlichen Grundlagen geschaffen, damit Apple ein offizielles «Development Agreement» mit der Stadt Cupertino eingehen kann. Apple soll die notwendigen Baubewilligungen für den «Campus 2» bereits im Verlauf des heutigen Tages erhalten. Bereits acht Tage nach dem ersten einstimmigen Stadtrats-Votum für das Projekt erhielt das Unternehmen zahlreiche Bewilligungen. Dazu zählten unter anderem die Erlaubnis, ehemalige HP-Gebäude zu demolieren oder einen temporären Emissions-Schutz aufzubauen. Apple plant, den Bau des Gebäudes im Jahr 2016 abschliessen zu können.

Candy Crush Saga passes 500m downloads, Bejeweled fans shake their heads
I won't play Candy Crush Saga -- mainly because it bothers me that Bejeweled never reached the same level of mainstream popularity -- but a lot of people do play it. Apple Receives Final Approval for 'Spaceship' Campus From Cupertino City Council
Apple today received final approval for its Apple Campus 2 project from the Cupertino City Council after gaining a unanimous initial approval back in October. "Go for it," said Cupertino Mayor Orrin Mahoney, following tonight's unanimous vote in favor of the project. "We're eager to see it happen. Go for it." With the vote, the Cupertino City Council approved the necessary ordinances to allow Apple to enter into an official Development Agreement with the City of Cupertino, which will see the company to receiving its full set of building permits on November 20. Apple has already received ancillary permits allowing it to begin demolition of the former HP campus that is already on the site.

Google Maps SDK for iOS now supports Apple A7's 64-bit architecture
If you're an iOS developer who uses Google Maps in your apps, you're gonna like the latest Google Maps SDK for iOS.
Google Maps SDK for iOS version 1.6 adds full support for Apple's 64-bit A7 processor. This means Google's Maps can now take full advantage of the power of Apple's latest chip. Twitter for iOS updated with better search, trending TV and local discovery
Twitter has released an update to its iOS client that offers a few cool new features and improvements. The most noticeable is an improved search function. A number of filters have been added to search, which makes looking for specific content easier and faster. Now you can filter your searches to include just tweets from the people you follow or just video or photo search results.
On the discovery side, Twitter has added new trends for TV and local content. Now you'll see what shows are being talked most about and also what things in your area are being tweeted most about.
Finally, the update allows you to take a screenshot of your verification backup code for safekeeping.

Apple clears final hurdle to bring sapphire manufacturing plant to Arizona
AZCentral is reporting that the Gilbert Public School Board voted to approve a tax break for Apple, thereby clearing the way for Apple to open up its planned sapphire manufacturing plant in Mesa, Arizona. Under terms of the agreement, Apple will buy the land, pay all expenses needed to build out the factory, and then lease it back to GT Advanced who will oversee the manufacturing operation.
The fate of the high-profile deal potentially worth hundreds of jobs seemed to hang in the balance, with the school district being the last of eight governing entities needed to approve a property reclassification that would entitle the premier tech company to a tax break.

Apple targeted in absurd class action suit over iOS Maps
In the latest installment of crazy folks suing Apple for absurd reasons, we have a class-action suit against Apple alleging that Apple's missteps with its Maps app for iOS rendered the device unworkable.
