News: FCC to propose cellphone use above 10,000 feet
The Federal Communications Commission will propose that airplane passengers be allowed to make phone calls and use cellular data on e-devices at 10,000 feet and above, the Wall Street Journal reports. Any use of cellphones on planes would require airline approval, as airplanes would need equipment installed to communicate with cellphone towers. FlightTrack 5: new look and features just in time for holiday travel
FlightTrack has been the frequent traveler's go-to app for five years, and now developer Mobiata has come out with a new version that offers a new iOS 7-friendly streamlined user interface and new features. FlightTrack 5 (introductory price of US$2.99, $4.99 starting December 1, 2013) replaces three previous versions of the venerable iPhone app; there's no longer a free version, but the expanded feature set of the new release makes it well worth the purchase. iWork for for iOS and Mac Updated, Keynote Gains With New Transitions [Mac Blog]
Apple has pushed new updates for its iWork suite of productivity apps on both the Mac and iOS. For iOS, Keynote saw the biggest improvements, gaining a number of new transitions, in addition to Apple's standard "stability improvements and bug fixes". Numbers and Pages each received unnamed stability improvements. On the Mac, Keynote gained the same new transitions as on iOS, while Numbers and Pages received new toolbar customization options and other bug fixes.

HBO Go for iOS update adds Google Chromecast support
HBO has some of the best programming around, but sometimes you're not near a cable box when you want to watch a show. Enter HBO Go, the only legal option for watching HBO content online. The service has been a godsend for travelers or college students whose parents have HBO and, thanks to today's iOS app update, it's even easier to use.
Version 2.4.0 brings Chromecast support for devices using iOS 6 and above. Utilizing Google's streaming content dongle, iOS users can now queue up video on their devices to play on their TV. FCC Proposes Permitting In-Flight Voice/Data Cell Phone Use
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission plans to introduce a proposal that would allow passengers to use cell phones on airplanes during flight, reports The Wall Street Journal. Under the terms of the proposal, airplane passengers would be permitted to make voice calls and use cellular data when above 10,000 feet.The Federal Communications Commission will propose allowing passengers to use their cellphones on airplanes, people familiar with the matter said. News: Samsung to pay Apple $290M more in damages
Concluding a retrial on damages today, a jury determined that Samsung must pay Apple $290 million in additional damages for the infringement of iPhone patents. The verdict is in: Samsung to pay $290 million in additional damages to Apple in infringement case
This just in: The jury in the Samsung vs. Apple retrial has reached a verdict, and the news is good/bad for Apple. Samsung will pay Apple additional damages in the amount of $290 million. This amount is in addition to about $600 million already owed to Apple.
Judge Koh reduced the original damages award last year, then ordered the retrial to determine a more realistic amount than Apple was asking for. The lawyers for both Samsung and Apple will now have an opportunity to view the verdict and will most likely quibble over the numbers, so it's not over yet.

Apple today released AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule Firmware Update 7.7.2 for AirPorts with 802.11ac. Jury Rules Samsung Must Pay Apple $290 Million in Damages Retrial
The jury has reached a verdict in the damages retrial between Samsung and Apple that began last week. The trial was to determine the amount of money Samsung must pay for copying key iPhone features and design elements after Samsung was found guilty in a jury trial last year. Apple debuts video trailers on the App Store with "Clumsy Ninja"
Remember Clumsy Ninja? You know, the app that was first previewed way back when Apple first unveiled the iPhone 5? Yeah, that little guy.

Apple Debuts App Store Video Trailers in Latest Editor's Choice App
Apple today debuted a new video trailer in the App Store for its latest Editor's Choice app, Clumsy Ninja, reports MacStories. This is the first time that Apple has allowed a video to be embedded within an App Store description. As an Editor's Choice pick, Clumsy Ninja has been given a specially designed App Store page in iTunes that includes a link to the app along with a video trailer that opens into a full screen preview when clicked. Apple and Other Rockstar Consortium Shareholders Not Involved in Google Lawsuit Decision
Late last month, the Rockstar Consortium -- a group of companies, including Apple, Ericsson, Microsoft, BlackBerry, and Sony, that purchased a collection of 6,000 patents and patent applications from the bankrupt Nortel in 2011 -- sued Google, Samsung, HTC, Huawei and others for infringement of some of those patents. In an interview with Intellectual Asset Management (via TUAW), Rockstar CEO John Veschi, who was Nortel's chief intellectual property officer before the company went bust, said "It was entirely my call based on the facts in front of me." Did you get thrown in the dirt today? How about slammed into concrete multiple times or had someone attempt to drown you? The iPad mini in the video below has endured all of that -- oh, and it also took a few bullets for good measure. Apple had no say in Rockstar's decision to sue Google
Three weeks ago we reported that Rockstar, a consortium backed by companies like Apple and Microsoft, sued Google for patent infringement. As a quick primer, the Rockstar consortium in June of 2011 jointly bid US$4.4 billion in an auction for over 6,000 Nortel patents. Google was also a participant in the auction but backed down once bidding hit the $4 billion mark.
As for the suit itself, Rockstar is suing Google over patented technology which helps map relevant advertisements to corresponding Internet search terms. Put simply, the suit is going after Google's prime money maker.
As one would expect, news that Rockstar was going after Google evoked a lot of ire from folks

The time it took for my brother to get our new Super Nintendo out of the box and connected to our television couldn't have been more than five minutes. I'm pretty sure we used the same coaxial cable connector that the NES before it used, though it's possible he was bold enough to forge a new connection dedicated to the SNES. The time between when he arrived home with the console box and a copy of Super Mario World, and when we saw Mario's astonishing level of detail, was extremely short. If you have ever tried to add your iCloud calendar in Google Calendar, you probably saw this error: "Could not fetch the url because robots.txt prevents us from crawling the url." That's because the https://www.icloud.com/robots.txt file tells "web crawlers" not to index anything under /calendar/ which is a good idea if we're talking about something like Googlebot but should not apply when done in response to an interactive action initiated by a human. Messaging client Viber 4.0 released for OS X
Viber, the multi-platform messaging app that grew to take on heavyweight champ What's App (and now Facebook Messenger and iMessages) has just released version 4.0 of its desktop client for OS X. The update comes almost two weeks after Viber released its updated iOS client.
As with its iOS app, Viber 4.0 adds several new features for the Mac, including a sticker marketplace. Stickers are images, similar to emojis, that Viber users can send to one another to convey a message or emotion. They've proved so popular on Viber's mobile apps that the company is now using them to monetize across all platforms -- including desktop with this latest release for OS X.

Smartphone-Diebstähle trotz «Activation Lock» noch immer ein Problem
Die Behörden von New York denken offen über eine neue Massnahme nach, um die Zahl der Smartphone-Diebstähle eindämmen zu können. Dabei sollen die lokalen Pfandleiher und Zwischenhändler in die Pflicht genommen werden. Für den Geschäftsabschluss mit diesen Händlern soll ein neues Abrechnungsformular zur Pflicht werden, auf welchem leicht zugängliche technische Daten wie die Seriennummer aufgeführt werden müssen. Zusätzlich sollen die Händler angehalten werden, Fotos der angenommenen Produkte zu machen. Durch diese Massnahme sollen gestohlene Geräte schneller gefunden werden können, wie die Polizei von New York überzeugt ist.

Apple updates iMovie, adds support for older Macs
Apple has released an update to its new iMovie software for OS X. Though the minor update offers the usual bug fixes, there is one major improvement those with older Macs will be interested in: the latest iMovie can now be installed on computers with some older video cards. Previously the latest iMovie required a Mac with an OpenCL-capable video card installed, but with the 10.0.1 update, any Mac that can run OS X Mavericks can now install and run the app.
Besides support for older Macs, iMovie 10.0.1 also addresses reliability issues when updating projects and events from previous versions of iMovie. iMovie is US$14.99 in the Mac App Store.

Die Shopping-App von Shopkick nutzt die von den Transmittern bereitgestellten Informationen und zeigt den Kunden bereits beim Eingang Produkte auf, die ihnen unter Umständen gefallen könnten. Dazu muss die App dank der iBeacon-Technologie nicht geöffnet werden. Eine aktivierte Bluetooth-Verbindung reicht zur ersten Nutzung des Programms aus. Die App kann dem Besucher auch aufzeigen, wie weit entfernt von seinem aktuellen Standort sich ein gewünschtes Produkt in der Filiale befindet. Aktuell gibt es wenige Apps, die bereits von den acht Kernen entsprechend profitieren können. Der Chrome-Browser gehört dazu, einige Karten-Programme und Video-Player ebenfalls. iMovie-Update verbessert Kompatibilität mit älteren Macs
Eine Überraschung erlebten einige Besitzer eines älteren Macs, die auf iMovie 10 aktualisierten: Zwar wurde das Update installiert, aber das Videoschnittprogramm versagte seinen Dienst. Mit der neuen Version 10.0.1 ist iMovie nun auch mit diesen Macs kompatibel.iMovie setzte vorher einen Mac mit einer OpenCL-fähigen Grafikkarte voraus. WhatsApp führt vor Facebook in der Beliebtheitsskala

Die Führungsspitze von Apple hat den Angestellten eine neue Fassung des Verhaltens-Kodex zugestellt. Das Dokument regelt das Auftreten und Verhalten der Angestellten im unternehmerischen und öffentlichen Raum. Apple scheint die Regeln nicht einseitig einführen zu wollen, sondern bittet die Angestellten, diese in einem ersten Schritt zu begutachten.
Der Verhaltens-Kodex wurde von Apple auch als iBook veröffentlicht. Dieses beinhaltet nicht nur die schriftlichen Anweisungen, sondern auch Videos, Bilder und andere Funktionen.

Reporter app hopes to find a way to measure your immeasurables
We already have a plethora of digital tools to track everything from how many steps we walk to how well we sleep at night, but there are a few things that are a bit more difficult to measure. For example, if you were asked how happy you've been this month, would you have an immediate answer? Tumblr for iOS is redesigned, new features
Tumblr, now owned by Yahoo, has just released the latest version of its iOS app, giving the app a complete visual makeover and adding a number of new features. The app's dashboard, which allows users to both view Tumblr blogs they love and edit and post to their own Tumblr blogs, has now has that iOS 7 flat UI we all know and love. But the real treats in the latest release are the new features.
The new post composer screen offers a better layout and fewer taps to get your content up. The post choose has also gotten similar improvements. Tweetbot for Mac updates to 1.4, but doesn't gain slick interface the iOS version has
If you're hoping the updated version of Tweetbot for Mac will include the interface overhaul that recently graced its iOS sibling, you'll be disappointed.
There are several items in the 1.4 build of Tweetbot that will be useful to OS X Mavericks users, however. There's smoother scrolling and the ability to reply to tweets and direct messages from the app's notifications. Tweetbot now will correctly recognize computers being on Wi-Fi when location services are turned on.
Other fixes include squashing various bugs involved with using secondary windows, timeline searches and more.

Robox is a Robot in a box that's 'not just a 3D printer'
Toward the end of the C Enterprise's Kickstarter pitch, one employee explains the genesis of the product's name, "it's a robot in a box." And thus the name Robox was born. The product's probably more accurately described as a 3D printer trapped in what appears to be a toaster oven -- though there are some caveats to that, too. Narrato Journal received a facelift last month when the app was updated for iOS 7. Besides a new look and feel, the app also added support for the M7 motion coprocessor and enabled social sharing of entries via Facebook, Twitter and AirDrop.
