Apple rumors are a dime a dozen, and an overwhelming majority never materialize. So, when the rumors of an almost-13-inch iPad made the rounds earlier this year, it was easy to dismiss it as just another whisper in the endless hum of Apple conjecture. But then Phil Schiller took the stage in San Francisco and showed off the iPad Air for the first time and the mega-iPad rumors suddenly make a bit more sense.

Microsoft Bashes Apple's iWork Software, New iPads
Microsoft's corporate vice president of communications, Frank Shaw, today took to the Official Microsoft Blog to denounce both Apple's revamped iWork software and the company's well-received decision to distribute it as a free upgrade for existing users. Amazon takes a dig at iPad Air with Kindle Fire HDX ad
Apple is no stranger to its competitors taking shots at its work. Some of them are downright hilarious. But at least they're usually fair comparisons. Amazon took yesterday's announcement of the iPad Air as an opportunity to subtly dig at Apple and promote its Kindle Fire HDX tablet.
You can see the ad above. What the ad doesn't say is that the Kindle Fire HDX is lighter than the iPad Air because it isn't the same size as the Air. The Fire HDX indeed is lighter than the Air's one-pound weight, at 0.82 pound. But it also features nearly an inch smaller screen, 8.9 in

Anki Drive available in Apple Stores
One of the most remarkable gaming moments at this year's WWDC keynote was the debut of Anki Drive, a racing game that allows players to pit an iOS controlled toy car against a computer controlled competitor. The car is equipped with sensors that allow it to intuitively provide a challenging opponent for the player.
Anki Drive is now available for purchase in Apple Stores nationwide. The starter kit, which retails for $200, comes with a vinyl track and two cars. Additional cars are available for $70 apiece. Each car has unique statistics and attributes including different levels of acceleration. Gamers can look forward to multiplayer support alongside the single player modes.

During the last 4 months, Apple paid out $25 million per day to iOS developers
During yesterday's media event, Tim Cook gave us his typical update on all things App Store. Specifically, Cook informed us that the App Store now houses more than 1 million apps and has seen more than 60 billion downloads. But there's one data point in particular that's worth some extra attention, namely that Apple has thus far paid out US$13 billion to iOS developers.
Now anytime you're talking about "billions," you're clearly talking some serious business. Indeed, the $13 billion figure is so large it's easy to casually gloss over its significance. To help put the figure into perspective, here are some facts about Apple's App Store payouts to developers over the past five years.

Apple posts slew of iPad videos, including iPad Air commercial, online
Apple today posted a number of iPad-related videos to its YouTube channel that it first showcased during yesterday's media event.
First up, we have Apple's first commercial for the iPad Air. Titled "Pencil", the commercial cleverly touts how thin the new iPad Air is while driving home the point that it's undeniably a content creation device.
Next we have Apple's video introducing us to the iPad Air. Per usual, Jony Ive is front and center as he details everything that went into the creation of the Air, a device which he notes has been in the works for years.

Samsung denies Nokia's version of events in Apple and Nokia's licensing agreement
Earlier this month, we reported that Apple was seeking sanctions against Samsung after word emerged that Samsung executives were improperly given access to confidential details from Apple and Nokia's confidential 2011 licensing agreement.
According to a court order penned by Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal a few weeks ago, it appears that a damages report put together by a Samsung damages expert was not marked "Highly Confidential -- Attorney Eyes' Only" as it should have been. The report included "key terms" from Apple and Nokia's licensing agreement and was erroneously posted to a Samsung FTP site that was available to a number of Samsung employees.

T-Mobile Offering iPad Air and Retina iPad Mini for $0 Down [iOS Blog]
Following yesterday's announcement that T-Mobile would begin selling the iPad, the company today debuted introductory plans to offer customers 16 GB cellular versions of the Retina iPad mini and the iPad Air with no downpayment. Like other T-Mobile "UnCarrier" offerings, the tablets will require a monthly hardware fee, which starts at $26.25 per month for the entry level 16 GB iPad Air and $22.08 for the 16 GB iPad mini with Retina Display. Mavericks' dock-on-every-monitor feature doesn't work for me
One of the features I was most looking forward to with the release of Mavericks was the promise that I could have access to the menu bar and Dock on every monitor. It might seem like a minor tweak, but it's always annoyed me that I had to pick one of my screens to be "in charge" of things, when I'd prefer to be able to launch and manage my applications from either screen, depending on which one I'm working with at the time. The promised top menu bar multiplication has arrived as described, but unfortunately the "Dock for every screen" bullet point comes with a big, fat asterisk.
You see, I'm one of those weird people who doesn't let his Dock sit at the bottom of the screen -- I like my Dock to sit vertically on the side. The way the multi-screen Dock works in Mavericks requires you to place your mouse

A Closer Look at Apple's Mac Pro Production Process
During yesterday's media event, Apple played a video highlighting the production process for the upcoming Mac Pro, a machine that will see Apple bring Mac production back to the United States and is already seeing over 2,000 people in 20 states working on the project. The video showed a number of steps in the production process, taking an initial chunk of aluminum and sculpting it into the shape of the Mac Pro enclosure before subjecting it polishing, anodizing, and other steps. That's because you've got tell the OS that TextExpander has permission to control your Mac. However, the process isn't clear. Fortunately for you I've figured it out. Why OS X Mavericks is really rather dull
I’ve always loved a Mac OS update. There have been times when I banged my stupid Apple-believing head on the desk when said new version of the Mac OS stubbornly refused to work with my Photoshop *, XPress, Outlook, or my (literally) blinking printer. But this anger is soon directed – via Apple noiselessly implanting its pleading reason into my willing brain – at Adobe, Quark, Microsoft or Canon for not being ready for Apple’s new OS with its fancy new features and suddenly hidden important folders. My first Mac OS update was System 7 in 1991. Strangely I have no recollection of loading 15 floppy disks into my Macintosh LC in order to have the Trash Can not dump its contents every time I Shut Down. Oh, and the other “4,000,007” reasons to upgrade Apple boasted at the time.

Like a lot of you, one of the first things I did when I had both OS X Mavericks and iOS 7 (in beta form) on my devices was to try AirDrop. I mean, it's been in OS X for a while and it was added to iOS 7, so of course you're going to be able to zap files back and forth between your iPhone and Mac, right?

OS X Mavericks Adoption Pushing Past 7% in Under 24 Hours
Less than 24 hours after OS X Mavericks launched for free in the Mac App Store, roughly 7% of Mac traffic is already coming from machines upgraded to the new operating system, according to a live tracker hosted by analytics firm GoSquared. The tracker shows adoption sitting at around 0.5-0.7% yesterday until beginning its upward march upon the public release. Apple has launched the iPad mini that fans wanted originally: the iPad mini with Retina display. It will go on sale in late November, following the launch of the iPad Air on 1st November.That original iPad mini will continue to sell alongside the new model at a reduced price of �249 for the Wi-Fi version, and �349 for the 3G model. Both have 16GB of storage.The second-gen iPad mini will cost �50 more than the old 16GB version (when it was selling for the original �269 price), which makes it �319. Nicht lange ist es her, da war die Kauf-Entscheidung bei einem neuen iPhone einfach: man musste sich nur für die Grösse des Speichers entscheiden — das war dann auch gleich massgebend für den Betrag, den man für das neue Gerät ausgeben wollte. Auch als dann neben dem original-schwarzen iPhone auch ein weisses Modell zur Auswahl stand, war die Entscheidung noch relativ einfach. Seit ein paar Jahren aber bietet Apple jeweils auch das letztjährige Modell vergünstigt zum Verkauf — das hat sich auch dieses Jahr nicht geändert. Neu gibt es aber mit dem iPhone 5c und dem iPhone 5s zwei neue Modelle. Zusammen mit dem nach wie vor von Apple angebotenen vorletzten Modell «iPhone 4s» und den je nach Anbieter noch vorhandenen Restposten des iPhone 5 fällt die Auswahl in diesem Jahr mit vier verschiedenen iPhones besonders gross aus.

OS X Mavericks: So arbeitet man mit Tabs im Finder
In Apples Haus- und Hof-Browser Safari können über die Tastenkombination cmd + T neue Tabs geöffnet werden. In Mavericks hat auch die Dateiverwaltung Finder diese Funktion erhalten.Dadurch kann beispielsweise in einem Tab der Dokumente-Ordner und in einem anderen Tab ein verbundener Server dargestellt werden. Apple updates iLife for OS X: New iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand features explored
It's been three years since Apple last updated the iLife suite – iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand – but during its 22 October event, Apple finally announced a new version of iLife for OS X. Interview mit einem der ersten Nutzer des neuen Mac Pro
Am gestrigen Special Event gab Apple weitere Details zum vollständig neu gestalteten Mac Pro bekannt. Während der neue Mac Pro im Dezember ausgeliefert wird, hat Apple das neue Flaggschiff bereits drei Profi-Nutzern zur Verfügung gestellt. 1 Million Apps im iOS App Store — 60 Milliarden Downloads
Apples CEO Tim Cook konnte zu Beginn der gestrigen Keynote bekannt geben, dass seit der Lancierung des iOS App Stores im Jahr 2008 über 60 Milliarden Apps heruntergeladen worden sind. Gleichzeitig konnte im iOS App Store auch die Schwelle von einer Million angebotener Apps überschritten werden. Man könne sich in der heutigen Zeit kein Leben mehr ohne Apps vorstellen, wie Tim Cook an der Präsentation zufrieden feststellte. In den letzten Jahren konnte Apple den App-Entwicklern insgesamt über 13 Milliarden US-Dollar auszahlen.

Aperture 3.5 released, adds iCloud photo sharing, Maps support + more
In addition to the other flurry of software releases today, Apple has released Aperture 3.5. The update includes a slew of bug fixes and small enhancements -- along with some pretty noticeable ones as well. Among the bigger enhancements: iCloud Photo Sharing is supported, Apple Maps is now used for Places, and support for publishing and syncing galleries directly to a SmugMug account has been added.
The full release notes are below. Aperture 3.5 is a free download to those that have version 3.0 or higher. Users who don't own it can purchase it from the Mac App Store for US$79.99.

There was a time when installing and configuring Mac OS Server or OS X Server was no modest undertaking; it was an entirely different operating system build, requiring a reinstall or upgrade to get at the yummy workgroup nougat center of Apple's desktop system.

iMovie Theater channel added to the Apple TV
If you turn on your Apple TV you may notice a new channel called iMovie Theater. Apple quietly added the channel tonight.
The channel itself is an extension of a feature in the new iMovie app for iOS and OS X that allows users to share clips, movies, and trailers to iMovie Theater and watch them anywhere -- on the Mac, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or Apple TV.

Some users with legacy versions of iLife and iWork that were not purchased through the Mac App Store are having difficulties upgrading to the new versions released earlier today, according to Macworld. Apple releases iTunes 11.1.2 with OS X Mavericks support
If you've downloaded OS X 10.9 Mavericks, be sure to run Software Update via the Mac App Store after you've installed it. It seems Apple wasn't able to include a version of iTunes that was fully compatible with the latest OS X, so they've released a supplemental iTunes update as well.

Apple announces new iPad covers and cases
Apple today made a number of sweeping iPad announcements. Naturally, Apple also took the opportunity to announce new iPad covers and cases.
First, Apple announced new iPad Smart Covers made of polyurethane that will be available for both the iPad mini and the iPad Air. Apple's iPad Smart Covers work well to protect the front-end of your tablet and will retail for US$39.
Apple also announced new iPad Smart Cases, which protect both the front and back of your tablet. They're a tad fancier than the Smart Covers, as they're made out of leather. They'll be available on the Air for $79 and on the mini for $69.
Both the iPad Smart Cover and Smart Case will be available in Product (Red) versions as well.

Apple's Smart Covers and Smart Cases Updated for New iPads [iOS Blog]
Alongside the new MacBook Air and Retina iPad mini, Apple debuted new Smart Covers and Cases for the devices. Like existing products, the Smart Covers product the device display while Smart Cases wrap around the entire device. The polyurethane Smart Covers will retail for $39 for both the iPad mini and the iPad Air, and the iPad mini version will fit both the first and second-generation tablets, which means existing iPad mini Smart Covers will fit the second-generation Retina devices. The covers will come in yellow, blue, green, black, pink, and Product (RED).

If you want to pull frames quickly and easily from your video clips, then you should take a close look at MovieDek from Limit Point. MovieDek is a video utility that'll scan a video file and export a range of frames as stills in just a few minutes.
MovieDek is a bare-bones app that launches with a small dialog box in the center of the screen. The app instructs you to drop a movie file on the application or the window to start the extraction process. There's also a preferences button and a quit button if you want to shut down the app. Inside the preferences, you can set the scale of the exported images as well as the image file format and image quality.
