Painting a Steve Jobs tribute live
This video was sent along by reader Danny B, and while we've seen a few works of art paying tribute to Steve Jobs, we haven't really seen one made live in real time like this. Just trust me -- you can watch the video below, and I think it's fascinating how the art goes from just a few brush strokes on the wall to the iconic image of Apple's genius.
Aaron Kizer is the artist, and the painting was done at an event in Kentucky called the 11th Hour Live Music and Arts Show. As you can hear at the very end of the video, the event was also "hosted" by what might be a very familiar voice to those of you who own iPhone 4Ss.

CardMunch app adds LinkedIn profiles
Some of you may remember CardMunch before LinkedIn acquired it earlier this year. The app lets you scan business cards and add them to a contact list. It uses Amazon's Mechanical Turk service and an actual human to do the optical character recognition needed to translate the image into text. Now that LinkedIn has been working with the developers for the past few months, an updated version complete with LinkedIn profile integration has been released.
Besides its tie-in to LinkedIn, the updated app has a fresh, new UI and improved support for the iPhone's camera. It also lets you add notes to each business card so you can remember where and whe

Cox to exit wireless business: sales end Nov. 16th, leaves the air March 30th, 2012
Cox Wireless has always been something of an also-ran, trying to play catch up with the big boys that already had a well-established infrastructure. It snatched up some precious 700MHz spectrum from the FCC in 2008 and launched its somewhat gimmicky "unbelievably fair" service late last year. However, by May 2011 it was clear things were not going as planned. The company announced it would become a

Kindle Fire torn down by iFixit, asbestos gloves curiously absent
We already had a pretty good idea of what's inside the Kindle Fire -- basically, the same thing that was inside the BlackBerry PlayBook. But of course we're still fans of seeing all the circuits and components that make up a modern gadget, and that's why we love iFixit so much. With gentle touches and tiny tools the disembodied hands here split Amazon's new hotness in twain and then started pulling out silicon and copper with wild abandon. The teardown is still ongoing, so set those browsers on Refresh, but already the small 4,400mA

Microsoft clarifies that Windows 8 isn't coming to phones (video)

Turns out, that's not how he said it. A Microsoft rep confirmed to us that if transcribed correctly, Ballmer's remarks (on display in the video below) should read, "We've got broad Windows initiatives driving Windows down to the phone. With Windows 8, you'll" By "Windows," then, he meant the overarching family of software bearing the Windows name, and not Windows 8 specifically. Says Redmond's PR team:

Gartner shows iOS lost smartphone share to Android in Q3 2011
Although Apple is selling iPhones like the proverbial hotcake, iOS lost market share in the worldwide smartphone market in the third quarter of 2011. What's remarkable is that sales of the iPhone actually grew during that time, according to sales information from Gartner.
As noted in a post on AppleInsider, Apple sold 17.3 million iPhones in that quarter for a market share slice of 15 percent. That makes the iPhone the third-largest smartphone platform in the world. But the market share was actually down year-to-year, with the 2010 figure at 16.6 percent.
The Android mobile operating system ate up that share, with 60.5 million smartphones sold in the third quarter of 2011 --

First Looks: XtremeMac Microshield SC + SCL for iPad 2
XtremeMac has released two new Smart Cover-compatible shells for the iPad 2. First is Microshield SC ($35), an extremely basic, soft-touch plastic-coated shell that snaps onto the back of the tablet. Rather than precision cut openings, the top and bottom edges are both fully exposed -- a design decision that we are not fans of. It comes in a variety of pastel colors, as well as black and clear. The other version is called Microshield SCL ($70), which…

NTT DoCoMo has not 'given up' on iPhone, says CEO
Japan's largest cellphone carrier, NTT DoCoMo, has not "given up" hope of selling the iPhone, according to CEO Ryuji Yamada. Yamada explains that Apple and DoCoMo are still in talks, but that there are several concerns, such as Apple's insistence on high volume commitments. The CEO also worries about the risk of the iPhone becoming a "mass majority" of DoCoMo products, and the closed nature of iOS blocking the carrier from pre-installing otherwise commonplace DoCoMo apps, such as its e-wallet system or custom i-mode email.

Researchers give a robot the abililty to control a person's arm (video)
Human-machine interaction just got a bit more interesting. Researchers from France's Montpellier Laboratory of Informatics, Robotics, and Microelectronics have demonstrated a new technique that allows a robot to control a person's arm in order to accomplish a task together -- yes, you read that right. As you might expect, that's still being described as a proof of concept, and the current setup simply consists of a set of electrodes that are attached to the arm and used to direct the person to drop a ball into a hoop the robot is holding -- to keep things on the up and up, the human participants were blindfolded during the tests, which were successful. According to the researchers, however, that is just the beginning. They eventu

IconSettings provides one-touch access to iOS settings with bookmarks
IconSettings is an interesting hack that lets you set up one-touch buttons on your iOS device to fix certain settings (like turning Bluetooth on or off, or changing brightness levels) but without going through a jailbreak process. All it is is basically a series of links that you can save out to your iOS homepage as app shortcuts, which then will talk back to your device when loaded up, sending you to the appropriate screen with just a touch.
Pretty smart. Of course, you'll need to be connected to the Internet when you use these things, since it's just a link on a webpage, so iPads without 3G will probably be out of luck. But it's

Gartner: Android has 52.5% of smartphones, Windows just 1.5%
Android now represents the clear majority of smartphones worldwide, Gartner found Tuesday. It had more than doubled its share in the summer versus last year to hit 52.5 percent, leaving all other platforms combined in the minority. Both Nokia's Symbian and Apple's iPhone had declined in share over the summer to 16.9 percent and 15 percent each, although Nokia's rapid collapse in shipments and the known slingshot effect as customers waited for the iPhone 4S meant that Apple would likely take second place in the fall.

Appcelerator: iOS still has highest developer interest, Kindle Fire heating up
The latest Appcelerator survey says developers are still most interested in putting together apps for the iOS platform, with 91 percent of them "very interested" in developing for the iPhone, and 88 percent going for the iPad. iOS 5 was also cited by developers surveyed as the most significant announcement for mobile in the last quarter.
But just because iOS is leading the pack doesn't mean developers aren't still looking at other platforms. In fact, the Kindle Fire is shooting up the charts of developer interest, and it's sitting at just a few points lower (49 compared to 53 percent) than the iPad was back when it launched. Android in general has been tempting developer interest, but the Kindle Fire sp

Fortunately, a new feature in iOS 5 comes to the rescue: custom keyboard shortcuts. In the Settings app, navigating to General > Keyboard > Shortcuts gives you access to a fully customizable list of shortcuts you can edit to your heart's content. If you're familiar with

Both companies are purportedly meeting in the next few days to give Apple a four-inch LCD for the new iPhone and an unusual 7.35-inch tablet display. The four-inch screen would supposedly keep the 640x960 resolution, since it would provide "better cost-cuts," the Korean outlet said.

If you're looking for a fun gadget gift for the iPhone or iPad user in your home, Griffin Technology has an option in the form of an iOS app-controllable flying model helicopter, the HELO TC, that is designed for indoor use and allows pilots to control the device with an app and special controller IR case that fits on the iPhone or iPod Touch. Users can fly the copter via joystick mode or using the accelerometer, but this affordably-priced novelty is not without its limitations.
