iOS 5.0.1 seeded to developers, battery life fixes and multitasking gestures in tow
Well that didn't take long. After officially commenting on iOS 5's battery woes, Apple's gone and issued a beta of iOS 5.0.1 for developers to help fix the flaw. Per the changelog, build 9A402 fixes bugs relating to battery life and iCloud document syncing, improves voice recognition for Aussies and re-enables multitasking gestures on the original iPad.

Samsung to depose Jony Ive, other Apple designers
Samsung is set to depose Jonathan Ive and other Apple designers by December 1st. The depositions are in preparation for the July 2012 trial that will decide the outcome of the plethora of lawsuits the two companies have filed against each other. Amazon Flow for iPhone uses AR to 'swipe' retail sales
Amazon's A9 search team tapped into one of the most common tactics of modern retail shoppers on Wednesday by launching Flow for iPhones (free, App Store). The app uses augmented reality through the phone's cameras to ID products based on their UPC codes. If a match exists on Amazon, users can both get more information, including videos, as well as buy it on the spot.

Klipsch label Energy unveils 2.1 multimedia speaker system
Energy has debuted its first multimedia speaker system with the Energy Power EM-2.1, a front-firing subwoofer and compact two satellite speaker system that features fiber composite cone drivers. The speakers, which are about the size of a wall outlet, sit easily on either side of a monitor or computer, while the subwoofer is also compact in size, making it a true "desktop" system.

Apple confirms iOS 5 bugs causing battery drain, promises a fix "in a few weeks"
Anecdotal reports have been pouring in since iOS 5 landed that battery life had suddenly dropped off on some people's iPhones. Apple posts iOS 5.0.1 for developers to cure battery woes
Apple on Wednesday night showed a relatively quick turnaround and gave developers a beta for iOS 5.0.1. The release primarily attempt to tackle battery issues encountered by some users, including iPhone 4S owners. Qualcomm announces Q4 earnings: rakes in $4.12 billion in revenue
The Qualcomm juggernaut just keeps on rolling. As the company's financial year comes to a close it's celebrating yet another stellar quarter, reporting $4.12 billion in revenue -- up 39-percent from the same time last year and a dramatic 14-percent higher than its Q3 earnings. Internet Explorer does less than 50 percent of world's web surfing, Chrome on the come-up

RIM stock drops below book value in lack of BlackBerry trust
RIM crossed a symbolic point illustrating its troubles Wednesday after its stock dropped over three percent. Falling as low as $18.66, the BlackBerry designer was expected by Bloomberg to close below its "book value" of $18.92, or a market cap equal to what the company itself is worth in buildings, cash, device inventory, and patents, but without debts. Analysts typically see dipping under book value as a sign that the market has lost confidence in a company or its leadership.

Retrospect 9 supports Lion, uses new 64-bit network client
Retrospect has launched Retrospect 9, a major upgrade of its Mac backup software. The program is now compatible with OS X Lion, and uses a new 64-bit network backup client with support for Growl notifications and 256-bit AES encryption. It is also faster, running twice as many operations simultaneously while consuming less memory and idle processor cycles.

John Lasseter receives star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, honors Jobs
Pixar head (and current Disney chief creative officer) John Lasseter recently was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in addition to being honored for all his great work on Pixar's movies and Disney's animations, Lasseter himself passed on some of the honor to Steve Jobs. Jobs famously purchased Lucasfilm's digital animation division back in 1986, and founded Pixar, which was purchased then by Disney in 2006, making Jobs Disney's largest shareholder. And Lasseter honored Jobs' memory at his ceremony, saying that "Without Steve, Pixar wouldn't exist. These films wouldn't exist. I honor him."

Libratone ships AirPlay-equipped Lounge, Live speakers
European speaker maker Libratone has introduced two new speaker systems, the Live and Lounge, that are designed to work with Apple's AirPlay standard. The Lounge system is the larger of the two, offering Scandinavian aesthetics and a combination of ribbon-based tweeters and midrange drivers that are designed to disperse sound in different directions.

Trick-or-treaters visit the Jobs residence
The San Jose Mercury News has posted a photo gallery of trick or treaters who visited Steve Jobs' Palo Alto home on Halloween, including a very adorable pair of siblings dressed as an iPad and an iPod.
The Mercury News said about 50 children and their parents ventured beyond the home's gates to receive cellophane bags with orange candy slices, Toblerones and sour drops. Some of the parents said keeping up the tradition was a wonderful testament to Jobs, who died Oct. 5.

Yahoo posts Livestand, IntoNow, Mail for iPad, 1 Android app
Yahoo swung out a full-scale mobile push on Wednesday with multiple apps for the iPad and a lone app for Android. Apple's termination of retail employee over Facebook post upheld
Apple employees wanting to blow off some steam on Facebook or Twitter may want to think twice before they post their comments. In a recent decision, the UK Labor tribunal upheld Apple's right to fire employees over negative comments left on a social network. This decision cited Apple's social media policy which prohibits employees from posting negative comments on social networks.
This legal dispute started when "Crisp," an Apple employee in the UK, posted some derogatory comments against Apple and its products on a private Facebook page. Pandora for iOS gets in-app subscriptions, iOS 5 tweaks
Music service Pandora has posted a new version of the Pandora Radio iOS app, v3.1.15. The update makes several significant changes, for instance allowing upgrades to the Pandora One tier from within the Settings tab. This costs $36 a year, but strips out audio and visual ads from the app as well as the web player.

Google pulls Gmail iOS app for fix, accused of low interest
Google in just two hours has already pulled its Gmail app for iOS. The company's Dave Girouard explained the removal as a voluntary step after Google found a bug that would break notifications and trigger errors the first time the app is open. The fix is underway, and a new version was coming "soon," he said.

Spanish tablet maker wins defense against Apple patent suit
A Spanish Android tablet maker, Nuevas Tecnologias y Energias Catala -- also known as NT-K -- has won its defense in a patent infringement suit directed against it by Apple, says FOSS Patents. In November 2010 Apple accused NT-K of copying the design of the original iPad, and asked a court for a customs ban, which resulted in NT-K tablets being seized after they arrived from China. In December Apple attempted to press criminal charges, but these were tossed out for an absence of "sufficient justification."

Siri driving iPhone 4S sales
One compelling feature of the iPhone 4S is Siri, the new voice control assistant that has taken iOS by storm. The technology powering Siri was acquired by Apple in early 2010 and lets users interact with their phone using voice control and natural language commands.

Steve Jobs biography moves 379,000 copies in first week
Nielsen BookScan US data on Wednesday determined that Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs was by far the most popular book in its first week of sales. The title, which costs as much as $35 in paper form and about half as much in digital, moved 379,000 copies just in the US, Bookseller noted. It was over three times more popular than John Grisham's legal drama The Litigators and about eight times more popular than neoconservative Bill O'Reilly's Killing Lincoln.

Gmail app on iPad and iPhone hands-on (video)
We've been clamoring for a dedicated Gmail app on iOS for so long that, now that there's one available, we couldn't help but take it for a test drive. Once installed the thing differentiates itself from the previous, HTML5-based app by using a darker, more mysterious black background for the app icon. Otherwise it's the same white and red envelope. Open that up and the app inside looks mighty familiar too. Join us after the break for some quick impressions.

Victory in Valencia: Android tablet maker gets Apple's iPad design lawsuit dismissed in Spain
Apple's taken its war on Android around the world and has won several battles recently, but the latest news from Spain isn't so rosy for Cupertino. Last year, Apple filed suit against Spanish firm NT-K, alleging it was infringing Apple's iPad design-related IP. Shortly thereafter, Apple scored a customs ban on NT-K's tablets, but yesterday a Spanish court decided to dismiss Apple's legal complaint and set NT-K's Gingerbread slates free. Das hat aber auch gedauert: die offizielle Gmail App für iOS ist jetzt im App Store zu haben, zumindest im amerikanischen (dürfte aber nicht mehr lange dauern, bis sie auch im deutschen erhältlich ist). Die App bringt eine Reihe von Features, die Zeit sparen sollen, darunter Push Notifications für neue Mails, Schnellsuche von Mails, die Priority Inbox und das Ordnen der Mails nach Labels und Sternchen. Läuft mit iOS-Geräten ab iOS 4.

Sometimes a CEO has to be coy. We understand that. So what should we make of Stephen Elop's remarks to Bloomberg Businessweek? Asked about the growing tablet market, the Nokia head replied, "There's a new tablet opportunity coming. We see the opportunity. Unquestionably, that will change the dynamics." Steve Cano tapped to replace Johnson as Apple retail head?
A key Apple retail worker, Steve Cano, is poised to assume control of the company's retail division, a Cult of Mac source claims. The most recent head of Apple retail, Ron Johnson, officially departed the company on Monday, but without anyone named as a replacement. Cano has allegedly already been promoted to his new position, although an Apple spokesperson states that "The search is underway with lots of interest and we are carefully selecting Ronís successor," adding, "We have nothing to announce today." Johnson is now the CEO of retailer JC Penney.

Gmail app for iPad and iPhone goes live
A rumor was quickly confirmed on Wednesday after Google posted an iOS-native Gmail app (free, App Store). The title is universal for both the iPhone and iPad and is intended to give a level of speed that isn't normally available through iOS itself: new messages are flagged in real-time through push notifications without having to use Exchange. Telefonica Czech to halt all iPhone sales
The Czech branch of international carrier Telefonica will not support the iPhone 4S, and is in fact dropping all earlier iPhones as well, according to local news outlet Hospodarske Noviny, quoting Telefonica spokesman Hany Farghali. The company blames Apple business terms; in particular, it is believed to have problems with the carrier subsidies demanded by Apple. In the US, for example, Sprint is known to be paying Apple about $200 more per device than the industry average.

Tokyoflash hat wieder mal ein interessantes Armbanduhrenkonzept aufgetan, dass jetzt auf Resonanz getestet wird und bei entsprechender Resonanz in Produktion gehen könnte: die Turbine-LED-Armbanduhr hat einen Aufziehmechanismus, der die namensgebende Turbine in Gang setzt und gleichzeitig die Energie für die LEDs auf einer Turbinenschaufel liefert, über die per optischem Trick 17 die Uhrzeit "schwebend" über der rotierenden Turbine angezeigt wird. Das Teil würden wir wirklich gerne mal als Produkt sehen.

Nokia streicht das Nokia 600
Vor gut zwei Monaten präsentierte Nokia mit den Modellen Nokia 600, 700 und 701 die ersten drei Smartphones auf Basis von Symbian Belle. Samsung plans to depose Jony Ive, other Apple designers
As a part of its patent infringement countersuit against Apple, Samsung is planning to take depositions from several key Apple designers by December 1st, says Edible Apple. The most prominent person on the list is Apple's senior VP of industrial design, Jonathan Ive. Ive is credited with much of the look and feel of Apple products, and may now wield even more influence in the absence of Steve Jobs, who was infamous for micromanaging details during his tenure as CEO.

Square Card Case goes hands-free with iOS 5 geofencing
Square on Wednesday rolled out a major upgrade to its Card Case app for the iPhone that gives it special location awareness just for iOS 5 users. A single opt-in takes advantage of iOS 5's geofencing to make payment completely hands-free at places where the app user has a loyalty card. Whenever the user is 100 meters or closer to a store using Square, they just have to mention their name to make the payment.

I just bought your Talking to Siri book on Amazon. Congratulations! I found very useful. I have a problem though: I mainly use Siri in French as most of my messages and email messages are in French. Sometimes I like to ask Siri Wolfram questions, so I must switch it to American English.
My question is the following: Is there a way of telling the French Siri that my next query will be in English? That would avoid the hassle of having to go to preferences, activate English, perform the query and then go back to preferences to switch Siri back to French.

Leap Wireless testing the LTE waters by end of 2011, diving in head-first next year
Cricket's sure making some leaps and bounds, isn't it? That's right, Leap Wireless -- the prepaid provider's parent -- announced that it's making preparations to jump into the world of LTE. The carrier will begin testing the service in Tucson by the end of this year, and aims to blanket two-thirds of its current network (nearly 25 million people) with 4G goodness within the next two to three years. Ebenfalls weiter im Abwärtstrend sind Symbian und BlackBerry, die jetzt nur noch 2,6 und 2,4 Prozent halten. Aufwärts geht es auch für Safari: Apple baut seinen Anteil von 55,6 Prozent im September auf 62,2 Prozent im Oktober aus und bleibt Marktführer.

BBM Music goes live as RIM's first self-made music service
RIM on Wednesday offered its first self-run music option in earnest with a promised launch for BBM Music. The finished version of the cloud music service should reach BlackBerry App World later in the day for Canada and the US. Android Browser leapfrogs Opera Mini, but Safari increases its lead
Web browser warriors have some more statistical firepower to play with, now that Net Applications has released the latest usage figures for mobile browsers. Google's vaguely titled Browser has inched up from a 16.3 percent share last month to 18.7 percent, counterbalanced by Opera Mini, which declined from just under 19 percent to 13.1 percent. South Korea lifts ban on iOS games in time for iPhone 4S
The South Korean government has lifted a ban on iOS games, reports say. Although the App Store has been accessible in Korea for some time, games were kept out because of rules making it illegal to sell titles not approved by the country's Game Ratings Board. South Korea has reversed a decision that banned games from the iOS App Store. For the past several years, the South Korean App Store has not included games due to concerns about objectionable content that could not be easily filtered. This decision to ban games was made by the Games Ratings Board, a governmental body that rates video and computer games based on their content. This ban has affected both iOS owners and Korean game developers who could not sell their games in their home country.

Apple erfüllte nun besonders den Hobby-Musikern, die die App GarageBand bisher nur auf dem Mac oder dem iPad nutzen konnten, einen Wunsch und veröffentlichte die Musik-App als Universalversion für iPhone und iPod touch.

You may remember the game Steambirds from a previous Daily App post. It's a turn-based flight simulator that plays like a board game. Instead of actually flying your planes, you move them turn by turn. It's a game about strategic positioning and planning. Sony kündigt 1,15 Milliarden Dollar Verlust für dieses Jahr an

Sony hat seine Quartalszahlen veröffentlicht und die sehen nicht gut aus: statt wie zur gleichen Zeit letztes Jahr 397 Millionen Dollar Gewinn haben sie im vergangenen Quartal 346 Millionen Dollar Verlust gemacht. Gründe hierfür sollen neben der Flut in Thailand, dem starken Yen und schlechten LCD-TV Verkäufen in Japan auch die Erdbebenkatastrophe gewesen sein. Dementsprechend wurde auch die Erwartung für den Jahresgewinn um zehn Prozent im Vergleich zum Juni reduziert: 1,15 Milliarden Dollar Verlust werden erwartet.

Atmel sales drag as iPad rivals Samsung, Dell slump
Atmel gave an outlook on Tuesday for the fall that was one of the few cluews as to how well iPad rivals were faring in the market. It expected its touchscreen contoller chip sales to drop 12 to 16 percent, as low as $402.7 million, at a time when shipments were normally up. Some of the company's tablet customers, including Dell and Samsung, had higher than usual inventories that pointed to a lack of sales.

Trick-or-treaters pay homage at Jobs' home
One of Steve Jobs' family traditions carried on yesterday, as a "haunted garden" opened at the Jobs family home in Palo Alto as it has for a number of years. Children from around the neighborhood stood in line for the gate to open at 6:30 p.m. at the front yard, where three women handed out small bags of candy, the San Jose Mercury News reported. The yard was appropriately decorated for the holiday, and two children came out dressed as an iPad and iPod.

University iPad program reveals room for improvement
The University of San Francisco has revealed the results of a six month 2010 iPad study involving 40 faculty members that looked at how teachers could use the device as a tool in the classroom. The result: while many teachers found the device useful, all thought there was room for improvement.

Apple wins patents on multi-touch technologies
Two patents granted to Apple yesterday by the US Patent and Trademark Office deal with some of the technologies behind multi-touch as used in iOS devices, and go all the way back to the introduction of the original iPhone. The company won a patent relating to front-end signal compression for touchscreens, as well as one detailing an improved method of crystallizing an indium tin oxide layer on top of transparent conductive material more safely.

Abvent launches Artlantis 4, five new 3D libraries

Aelios Weather app for iPad gets more features, retains beautiful look
I took a look at Aelios Weather last spring and loved the idea of a weather app that looked like a crafted physical object rather than a bunch of techno dials.
Aelios has just been updated, and it retains its unique look while adding some worthwhile features and some under the hood speed-ups. You now get a choice of weather info providers, including AccuWeather. Data sources can be switched with an onscreen swipe.

Parallels Desktop for Mac updated, allows Lion installs
Parallels has updated their recently-released Desktop 7 for Mac virtualization product, improving support for non-English keyboards, support for Ubuntu 11.10 and improving the full-screen experience, now allowing users to scale the virtual machine screen to fit the screen while retaining the resolution. The update, labeled build 7.0.15050, also introduces the ability to install OS X Lion into a virtual machine using the Install Lion.app installer from the Mac App Store.

HTC's new Taiwan plant may help make 40m more phones a year
HTC is a few months away from finishing a plant that would nearly double its smartphone output, supply chain reports claimed Tuesday. The plant in Taoyuan should be done in early 2012 and make as many as 40 million phones a year, Digitimes was told. With HTC's shipments estimated to peak at 48 million in 2011, the addition would give it much more room to scale.

Daily Mac App: iClip
I missed out on iClip during its initial heyday a few years ago, so I was pleased to see it make a comeback. The OS X utility keeps a copy of almost anything that can be sent to the clipboard. It'll also organize those into scrapbooks or however you want.
iClip sits off to the right side of the screen and acts like OS X's dock. It's normally hidden by default, and the preference options are robust and allows you to customize how big the iClip dock is and where on the screen it is. If you have a second display hooked up, you also can set iClip up to be used just on the main display.
