Google partners with Universal, EMI, Sony Music, 23 independent labels on Google Music, scores exclusive content
A music store isn't much without plenty of music, and Google's new offering launched with some big backing today. The company is partnering with Universal, EMI, Sony Music and no less than 23 independent labels on the service. Speaking at Google's event today, Universal's Rob Wells said he expects Google Music to be a "rich new revenue stream for our artists," and he also noted he's excited about the "global rollout" across all Android devices, although we're unfortunately not hearing many specifics about availability outside the US just yet. Google: 200 million Android devices activated, over 550,000 activated everyday
Here at the "These Go To Eleven" event, Google announced that Android activations thus far have surpassed 200 million devices. That's over 550,000 activations per day, which is 50,000 more than June's figure, and 150,000 more than the 400,000 activated in May. Not quite as many as Cupertino's 250 million strong, but it's getting close.

Ravensburger streitet sich mit Apple vor Gericht
Apples Rechtsvertretung hat derzeit sehr viel zu tun. Neben Samsung und Motorola streitet sich der IT-Konzern aus Cupertino nun auch noch mit dem deutschen Unternehmen Ravensburger vor dem Müncher Landgericht. Der Spielehersteller sieht es nämlich ungern, dass Apple Spiele-Applikationen im iTunes Store zulässt, die den Namen „Memory“ enthalten. Ravensburger ist bereits seit 1976 Eigentümer der Marke „Memory“ und sieht sich in seinen Rechten verletzt.Ravensburger trat wahrscheinlich schon vor einiger Zeit an Apple heran und forderte die Einstellung der Verwendung der geschützten Marke im App Store. Apple soll sich hingegen nicht gemeldet haben, weshalb man sich nun im Müncher Landgericht traf. Apple NFC workflow patent parallels Android Beam, more
A newly published Apple patent application could lead to NFC (near-field communications) iOS devices but also possibly conflict with other device-to-device sharing plans. A "Device-to-device workflows" patent would set up a handshake between two devices that would exchange data in a multi-step script when the two get near. As an example, a primary device could request contact information, bring up the camera app to take a photo of the contact, and get a bookmark in the web browser to the new contact's website.

Bob Iger to pull in over $50,000 annually from Apple board
The newest Apple board member, Robert Iger, will reap at least $50,000 a year from his added work, an Apple SEC filing reveals. Iger is slated to get a "standard $50,000 annual retainer" for his position, paid in quarterly installments. He is also however being granted 142 Apple shares, which vest in February. At current prices, the shares are together worth almost $55,000.

AT&T in talks to offer Nokia's Windows Phones
It's apparently not a done deal just yet, but Bloomberg is reporting that AT&T is currently in negotiations to offer at least one Nokia Windows Phone sometime next year. That word comes straight from the head of AT&T's tablet unit, Glenn Lurie, who reportedly said that AT&T is now working on completing the details of the agreement -- no word on any specific phones, though. In other news, Lurie also said that "you are going to see prices come down" on tablets next year, although in that case he was unsurprisingly only referring to prices on a two-year contract (tablets from Acer and Samsung were specifically men

Acer A700 and A701 tabs leak on support site, sporting Tegra 3 and full HD displays
Don't think that ASUS is going to be having all of the Tegra 3 fun by itself, Acer appears to have a pair of Iconia-branded tabs on the way also sporting NVIDIA's quad-core mobile chip. The A700 and A701 are showing up as hardware profiles over at the company's support site. JBL ships simple Jembe desktop speaker system

HTC Mozart and HD7 go back to grade school, learn how to Internet Share
The ability to use your Windows Phone as a mobile hotspot was originally an exclusive feature extended only to brand new Mango devices, but we're now beginning to see Internet Sharing pop up on the HTC HD7 and Mozart. We're seeing reports that it's showing up in various parts of the world, though we still haven't heard if this will include T-Mobile HD7 users in the US or if it still awaits final carrier approval first. Shazam for iOS, Android gets free lyric syncing
Shazam, the mobile song ID service, is now offering its lyric playing capability to a broader customer base. The feature, LyricPlay, is now available to iOS device owners using the company's free app (App Store) as well as all Android users (Android Market). Previously, it was only available to iOS device owners that had bought Shazam's premium Encore and RED apps.

Minecraft: Pocket Edition hits iPhone, iPad
Popular PC game Minecraft is now available for iOS in some regions. Called Minecraft: Pocket Edition, the iOS edition is scaled back from its PC counterpart. While players can still wander randomized worlds and save them to a device, the iOS game is limited to building with 36 block types, as well as LAN-based multiplayer instead of connecting over the Internet.

Google, Facebook, Twitter and others speak out against the Stop Online Piracy Act
Earlier today, the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the proposed Stop Online Piracy Act (or SOPA) which, depending on who you ask, is either a means to stop piracy and copyright infringement on so-called "rogue" websites, or the most serious threat of internet censorship that we've seen in some time. In the latter camp are some of the biggest internet companies around, including Google, Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, eBay, LinkedIn, Mozilla, Zynga and AOL (full disclosure: Engadget's parent company), who today made their stance clear by taking out a full-page ad in The New York Times.

Syrian resistance turns to iOS app to spread news
The resistance to Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria has deployed an iOS app as one of its tools, says the The Daily Beast. The new app, Souria Wa Bas (roughly "Syria and That's All"), gathers news on Syria from an opposition perspective, since al-Assad's government is accused of putting out false information. Users have access to text, videos, a map of opposition hotspots and even a joke collection. Thanks are given to resistance groups such as the country's Local Coordination Committees.

MPAA sidesteps censorship, security issues in SOPA hearing
MPAA members during a Congressional hearing for the Stop Online Privacy Act (SOPA) largely evaded questions of the possible censorship and technical security problems from the proposed bill. The movie studio-backed group's representation, headed by executive affairs and policy lead Michael O'Leary, argued that it was acceptable for the bill to enforce a blacklist of websites because such policies had worked well in other countries. Amazons Tablet zeigt PotenzialDie Kollegen von iDownloadBlog.com haben bereits ein Kindle Fire erhalten und lassen es in diesem Video im direkten Vergleich gegen das iPad 2 antreten. Fazit: Das Kindle Fire schlägt sich ganz gut - vor allem in der Disziplin Netflix Streaming. Allerdings sind die Geräte nur sehr bedingt miteinander vergleichbar. Gmail for iPhone, iPad returns with fix
Since being pulled just hours after release due to bugs, the Gmail app for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad has now returned (free, App Store). Version 1.02 requires iOS 4.0 or newer, and users need to either uninstall or log out of the original 1.0.1 app. As before, it improves on just using the native iOS mail app by viewing Gmail in threaded conversations, and organize it by archiving, labeling, starring, deleting, and spam reporting.

iOS 5.0.2 due next week, 5.1 to upgrade Siri, report claims
Apple is at work on not one but two updates to iOS 5, claims German site Macerkopf.de. iOS 5.0.2 will allegedly be out by the end of next week, and attempt to fix battery life problems that went unresolved by v5.0.1. AOL reworks AIM: message sync, in-line media, easy groups
AOL on Wednesday launched a redesigned AIM for both desktops and mobile devices to compete with modern alternatives like Facebook Messenger or Google+. The service now syncs message histories and makes sure users can follow what was missed, even if they were signed out. Steve Jobs wanted to bypass cell carriers entirely

Samsung has started selling a modified Galaxy Tab 10.1 to skirt Apple's German preliminary ban. The Kindle Fire's now out there, but it had managed to tick all those FCC boxes a few months back. Tim Cook friendlier to enterprise than Jobs, say sources
New Apple CEO Tim Cook is likely friendlier to corporate customers than his predecessor, Steve Jobs, suggest two former Apple workers quoted by the New York Times. Identified as having operated in business sales, the sources claim that while he was still just COO, Cook met with corporate customers more often and seemed to appreciated their needs, although he stuck with Jobs' position that Apple should focus on consumers rather than businesses. EU: we looked into Apple, Samsung on our own
European Commission's antitrust head for home electronics, Per Hellstroem, mentioned at a conference Wednesday that the investgation of Apple and Samsung hadn't been prompted by another company. Instead of an official complaint, he said the constant patent lawsuits between the two could "involve competition issues" that warranted a look. The EC could make requests for data from the two, and other parties, to see if there was a problem.

Readibility to go free, gain iPhone, iPad apps

Digital downloads bring UltraViolet one step closer to being useful
The dream of being able to buy a movie once and watch it anywhere promised by UltraViolet still seems impossible, but adding digital downloads to Flixster does bring it one step closer. Of course being able to download and watch a handful of movies on a single movie application is far from anyone's dream, but we supposed you have to start somewhere. AT&T: iPhone on Sprint, Verizon hasn't led to defections
Having the iPhone 4S on Sprint and Verizon hasn't led to customers jumping ship from AT&T, the latter's Emerging Devices head Glen Lurie said in a discussion Wednesday. Churn, or the turnover of old customers leaving for new ones coming in, "has not moved at all" since mid-October, he told MarketWatch. Goldman Sachs sees iPad demand slowing
Almost two years after the iPad launch, Goldman Sachs reports that demand is slowing down, just as the holiday shopping season begins. "While improving holiday demand into late November could certainly push the momentum in the other direction, we believe it is prudent to assume the iPad is facing some near-term demand challenges," writes Bill Shope.

I launched Asteroids Gunner with low expectations. Asteroids is one of the oldest games around, and it's hard to see how even Atari can squeeze anything more from this relic. But lo and behold, it has. Asteroids Gunner is a remarkable freemium dual-stick shooter, turning the top-down 2D gameplay of the original into something graphically impressive and addicting at the same time.
The graphics and sound are probably what you'll notice first. It obviously looks better than the old 2D line drawings, yet the beautiful asteroids, ship, rocks and backgrounds are clean and simple enough to put the gameplay front and center (the mechanics are nearly identical to the old Asteroids game). Die Jungs von den Konkreet Labs sind eigentlich Musikproduktions-App-Entwickler, aber das UI-Getüftel schlägt manchmal wohl auch analoge Pirouetten und am Ende steht man mit einem Synthesizer in Form eines alten Kochbuchs da. Genauer gesagt mit einem Open-Source-Synthie MeeBlip, dessen Gehäuse Mary Hahns "praktisches Kochbuch" darstellt. Ravensburger klagt gegen Apple: “Memory”-Betitelung für Spiele rechtswidrig?
Ravensburger hat eine Klage gegen Apple beim Landgericht München eingereicht. Damit will das Unternehmen seine Wortmarke “Memory” schützen – und verlangt die Verbannung von Spielen aus dem App Store, in denen Memory als Begriff auftaucht. HP gets into ultrabooks with nine-hour Folio 13
HP formally launched itself into the ultrabook space early Wednesday with the Folio 13. The 13.3-inch system is "less than" 0.7 inches thick and, while heavier than the MacBook Air at 3.3 pounds, also has what HP claims is the longest-lasting battery in the class. HP reinvents Envy 15 and 17 with Beats, MacBook Pro cues
HP in one of its more surprising unveilings Wednesday night completely remade its Envy 15 and 17 notebooks. The new versions take more of their visual cues from the MacBook Pro, adopting its silver-colored metal, but put an even heavier emphasis on Beats audio processing than they did in the past. Each has six speakers and a subwoofer, even going so far as to have an oversized thumb dial for volume that both gives it finer volume control and a more iconic look.

Trend Micro has launched its own cloud-based subscription backup and sync service called SafeSync, featuring browser-based management and compatibility with Macs, Windows PCs, Android and iOS devices. RIAA goes after ReDigi for selling "used" iTunes tracks
The Recording Industry Association of America has sent a cease-and-desist letter to ReDigi, threatening to sue the company over its marketplace for "used" digital tracks. Patent awarded for Upper West Side NYC Apple Store exterior
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted a patent for the striking exterior of Apple's Upper West Side store in New York City, just over a year after the patent was first filed. The patent recognizes the unique design of the store, and credits the late Steve Jobs as one of the designers. Ricoh releases CX6 compact superzoom with fast AF
Ricoh has unveiled the CX6 compact camera. The device focuses on speed and features a hybrid autofocus system with lock-in times as short as 0.1 seconds. The autofocus system is the same one as used in Ricoh's CX5, launched earlier this year, and can keep up the speed not only through the whole zoom range but give a 3FPS shooting speed even with moving subjects.

Sony plots Internet end-run past cable, joins Google Music
Sony may be in an unintentional race with Apple to bypass the limits of traditional TV providers for its own live TV service, multiple sources might have disclosed on Tuesday night. Does motherhood sell smartphones?
This might be a late contender for weirdest "mobile usage" news item of the year: A new study, put together by an online resource called BabyCenter, claims that there's a tie between women becoming mothers and women buying smartphones. 53% of moms surveyed by the site reported that they bought smartphones (including the iPhone) as a direct result of becoming a mother. Dell revenue goes flat as home PCs slide six percent
Dell reported a tough summer quarter on Tuesday evening that showed the deeper impact of tablets and rivals. Its revenue was almost exactly flat over a year ago, dipping slightly to almost $15.37 billion. Although its net profit was up 17 percent to $893 million, its consumer group that covers its home PC business saw a six percent drop in revenue and was joined by problems in its public sector PCs and services as well as nearly flat growth in all but its international field, which covered developing countries.

Europhysics Letters publishes first paper submitted from space, your homework excuses now deemed invalid

Alexander Alexandrovich Skvortsov took the time to detail a series of experiments aboard the International Space Station back in July of 2010, and rather than just noting 'em in his flip-pad, he worked with Sergey Alexandrovich Volkov to submit the work to a highly-regarded journal on the 27th of October, 2011. Square has introduced significant updates to its mobile-payment apps for iOS and Android devices. The service brings several new capabilities, enabling vendors to take advantage of loyalty programs or print physical receipts. Apple releases 10.7.3 to developers
Apple has released the first build of 10.7.3 to developers. According to AppleInsider, testers have been encouraged to focus on iCloud document storage, iCal calendars, Mail, and Address Book -- all services closely tied to Apple's cloud-based service.
Though the build apparently lists no known issues, Apple typically releases multiple test builds to developers before making OS X updates publicly available.

Google Voice for Android finally gets mass texting capabilities
Sweet jumpin' Jehoshaphat, it finally happened -- Google Voice for Android now supports sending text messages to multiple recipients. Being able to have a single, archived repository of texts is great, but it was always somewhat bewildering that while you could send a mass SMS from the website you were stuck sending out individual missives on the app. Today's update, version 0.4.2.38, finally gives Voice the power to spam your contacts -- a pretty basic feature that even the lowliest of feature phones enjoys. I know we've covered djay quite a bit this year but this update is a pretty huge one. I happen to like djay, which is available for iOS and Mac, because it reminds me of when I first used Premiere -- version 4 on an 8500. Except instead of going from cutting film on a big machine to editing video pixels, you're taking physical vinyl record spinning and scratching and translating it to digital audio. Djay takes a complicated setup and physical skills and turns them into a software interface, with digitized shortcuts for dummies like me. Developers have been notified that a beta version of OS X 10.7.3 is now available for testing, which comes with a focus on the currently-underdeveloped Documents in the Cloud feature of iCloud.
