Apple posts Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.9
Apple has posted a new Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update, v3.9. The patch extends support for different RAW formats within Aperture 3 and iPhoto '11. Newly supported camera lines include Nikon's 1 J1, 1 V1, and CoolPix P7100, as well as Sony's NEX-5N, Alpha SLT-A65, and Alpha SLT-A77, and Olympus' PEN E-PL1s, PEN E-PL3, and PEN E-PM1.

Charitable matching at Apple raises over $2.6 million
Apple has managed to exceed $2.6 million in donations to non-profits since starting a charitable matching program in mid-September, according to an AppleInsider report. The company is said to have internally announced $1.3 million in worker donations so far, which it is matching dollar-for-dollar. Workers are individually limited to donating $10,000 to a charity per year.

Apple the most desired PC in China
China is one of Apple's most desirable markets, due to the growing middle class and the huge population base of over 1.3 billion people. It appears that the love goes both ways, as Macs are considered to be the most desirable brands of personal computer in China.

Researchers begin work on Babbage Analytical Engine, hope to compute like it's 1837
A fully-functional Babbage Difference Engine? That's been done and duplicated. But the even more ambitious Babbage Analytical Engine? That's another story completely. Devised by mathematician Charles Babbage in the 1830s, the Analytical Engine can be considered to be the first programmable computer -- or at least the first notion of one -- but Babbage's plans for it were never finished, and the device itself (which would fill a room) was never built. Apple files for patents on multiple OLED backlights
Apple has filed for a patent on using multiple OLED backlights in devices, notes Patently Apple. The application suggests that the technology could be applied to several devices, including iPads, iPhones, Cinema Displays, MacBooks, and iMacs. Apple's concept would not only theoretically produce better illumination, but also potentially reduce the thickness of devices.

Amazon Appstore for Android gets a Kindle Fire-inspired facelift
The Kindle Fire itself may still be a week away from release, but users of other Android tablets and phones can now get a small taste of what's in store courtesy of version 2.0 of the Amazon Appstore. Former Apple interface expert rants on Microsoft's "Vision of the Future" video
A few weeks ago Microsoft came out with a future of productivity video proposing a very touchscreen-based future for us humans. A former human-computer interface inventor for Apple, Brett Victor, has picked apart this video in a beautifully designed "rant" on his site, essentially taking Microsoft to task for proposing a limited, iterative future in 2019 -- calling it hardly a "vision" at all.
While I enjoyed the Microsoft video, and picked it apart myself for other reasons (yeah, you're gonna get to do all this stuff is everyone is a Microsoft customer, basically), Victor makes some important points. Chief among them is summarized by this sentiment:

Digidrench whets our appetite for water-based Arduino adventures (video)
Wondering what you get when you mix an Arduino kit with some food coloring and plenty of water? Well, the Digidrench team came up with the concept of developing a media controller that mimics the flow of water in and out of three separate containers. The pay-off? Seeing three of the team get coated in a brightly colored mess. An Arduino kit is connected to a sensor that gauges the amount of water in the tanks and transmits the watery action to a corresponding video slice. Take the water out, and the deluge reverses. Comcast shifts some customers to IPv6, promises it won't hurt
No sooner have you memorized the IP address of your media server and then your ISP has to go and mess it all up -- in this case, by adding a whole lot of extra digits. It's for a good cause, though: Comcast is launching its IPv6 pilot as part of a long and grueling global transition away from IPv4, whose 4.3 billion addresses are now severely depleted. The pilot will start with customers who have a simple connection straight from their PC to a cable modem and who are running an up-to-date OS. It will also allow old IP addresses to exist alongside the new ones, hopefully avoiding the slowdowns that can result from trying to translate between to the two formats on the fly. The good news?

Verizon: LTE data promo meant to clear 3G for iPhones
Verizon's doubled 4G data cap promo is as much to serve iPhone users as it is LTE Android users, CFO Fran Shammo told an investment event on Wednesday. The deal was "enticing" Android users on 3G phones to trade up to 4G so the carrier could accommodate more 3G iPhone owners. The iPhone was selling "very well" on Verizon, he said, and keeping those on other platforms on 4G made sure Verizon didn't have to pay for an upgrade to keep 3G running smoothly.

Estonian Hackers target iTunes users in 'Clickjacking' ring
Wired has an interesting report on a clickjacking scheme that hijacked prominent websites including iTunes and the IRS. The scheme was run by six Estonians and one Russian operating out of Eastern Europe. The team created several fake companies, including a bogus advertising agency, which were paid for each click on an advertisement or a visit to a website. The criminals then setup a network of malware infected computers that hijacked internet links.
The malware, called DNSChanger, would modify the DNS settings of infected computers and redirect them to a DNS server controlled by the criminals. This DNS server would then bring infected users to websites that would pay the suspects for each visit.

iOS 5.0.1 security fixes eliminate Smart Cover exploit
The iOS 5.0.1 update deals with several security flaws in addition to making feature improvements, an Apple note indicates. Among these is a Smart Cover exploit that allowed people to skip passcodes and gain limited access to an iPad 2. Also fixed are vulnerabilities in components like fonts, DNS and URL handling, and weak certificates associated with DigiCert Malaysia, which are no longer trusted.

The man who provided Siri's voice in the UK
Despite Apple's request that he remain anonymous, British voiceover artist Jon Briggs revealed to The Telegraph that he is the voice of Siri in the UK. Briggs received a call from an Apple PR representative last month after the iPhone 4S was launched, and was told that he should not talk publicly about Siri.

Conde Nast Britain gives subscribers free iPad access
Condé Nast Britain has begun to provide existing print subscribers with access to equivalent digital editions on the iPad at no cost. According to an article published on the UK Association of Online Publishers website, Apple's Newsstand app has increased the issue sales of British GQ by 94%, Wired UK by 169%, and Vanity Fair by a whopping 245% over the average sales per day in September.

iOS 5.0.1 now available for download (Updated)
The first update to iOS 5 is now available for download. iOS 5.0.1 has been released, and will be making its appearance on your iOS devices shortly.
To install the update, launch the Settings app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, tap General, and then open Software Update. If the update has made it to your part of the world, you'll be able to do an OTA (over-the-air) update of your device without resorting to the old method of syncing it to your Mac or PC.

Court tosses out case accusing Apple of 'bricking' iPhone 3G
A federal judge has tossed out a lawsuit accusing Apple of intentionally crippling the iPhone 3G with iOS 4, according to mocoNews. A San Diego resident, Bianca Wofford, claimed in the case that after installing the iOS 4 upgrade, her 3G and others were turned into "iBricks" that ran incredibly slowly. While such complaints were indeed widespread in online forums and the media, Wofford made the additional assertion that Apple's motive was to push people into buying the iPhone 4.

US Senate rejects attempt to thwart net neutrality
The US Senate on Thursday rejected a Congress-backed bill to overturn net neutrality rules. Politicians voted 52 against, 46 for SJ Resolution 6, which would have rejected the order taking effect on November 20. The measure had been promoted mostly by Texas Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison and by fellow party members.

AT&T still top iPhone carrier in US
It's a three-way battle in the US for the iPhone and AT&T is keeping its lead as the #1 iPhone carrier, says data from analytics firm Localytics. Localytics collects device and carrier information from 1,500 mobile applications including those from Skype, Turner Broadcasting and News Corporation.
The most recent data shows that AT&T accounts for 56% of iPhone 4S handsets on its network of applications. Verizon is in second with 32%, a surprisingly high percentage for a carrier that's only had the iPhone for less than a year. Corsair ups Performance Pro SSDs with self-tuning
Corsair rolled out a new high-end Performance Pro set of solid-state drives on Thursday to target gamers and serious users that otherwise couldn't consider SSDs. Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 review
What is the optimal size for a modern-day tablet? Is it 10 inches? Is it seven? Or, is it something smaller, like the economy-sized smartphone that is the Galaxy Note? We can't say for sure, but we surely can say that Samsung is as much in the dark as we are. Like a gadgety Goldilocks traipsing between an endless sea of options, that company seems completely unable to make up its mind, splitting niches into sub-niches and then cleaving those in twain again with a seemingly endless array of fractionally different tablets.

Nokia may return to US through Lumia 800 with AT&T LTE
Nokia's decision to wait until 2012 for its US revival may be to give it an LTE connection, a possible scoop might have uncovered. The carrier will reportedly get an LTE-based 4G version of the Lumia 800 on AT&T, The Verge heard. An der Universität von Nottingham baut man nicht etwa an einem weiteren mobilen OS, jedenfalls nicht im üblichen Sinn, sondern daran eine Art Betriebssystem für biologische Zellen zu bauen. Die funktionieren zwar zur Zeit auch ohne - meist - prächtig, aber für die Synthetische Biologie, die Zellen aus ihren Grundbestandteilen nachbauen will, geht es darum diese Zellen eben umzuprogrammieren, und damit neue Wesen (wie immer muss E.coli zuerst dran glauben) zu schaffen. Auto-complete keyboard found in iOS 5
It seems iOS 5 is full of hidden "gems" (aka features Apple didn't deem worthy of making publicly available yet), like the earlier panorama camera stitching feature. This time, hacker Sonny Dickson found an Android-like word suggestion bar tucked away in iOS 5. Personally I'm not a huge fan of these, but some people feel it speeds up typing and is helpful. Man kann nämlich jetzt ein japanisch-englisches Gespräch damit führen, und nach dem man ausgeplappert hat, wir es automatisch übersetzt. Police break up Hong Kong iPhone lineup after altercation
An iPhone 4S lineup at the Hong Kong Apple Store, measuring in the hundreds, was broken up by police on Wednesday night, reports say. Even though the phone only officially launches in Hong Kong on Friday, 4S pre-orders sold out in 10 minutes; this may be why a store lineup first started forming around noon on Tuesday. Police were called in after a group of scalpers allegedly started threatening customers and trying to cut in line.

T-Mobile USA hurt by iPhone 4S sales
T-Mobile USA will soon feel the sting of being the only carrier in the US without the iPhone 4S. As part of its quarterly earnings report, T-Mobile USA CEO Philipp Humm said the carrier is concerned about its churn rate in the important December quarter and how it may be affected by iPhone 4S launches at Verizon Wireless, Sprint and AT&T.
T-Mobile is currently the #4 wireless carrier in the US and is struggling to compete with its bigger rivals. This past quarter the carrier added 126,000 net customers but most of those were prepay customers. The carrier lost 186,000 important, revenue-generating contract customers. This number will likely go up in the current quarter now that the iPhone 4S is available.

Your iPhone 4S's proximity sensor's working overtime -- thank Siri (video)
As far as assistants go, Siri can be rather demanding. In fact, she apparently requires that your iPhone 4S's proximity sensor be on whenever the handset's screen is activated. That's the conclusion iFixit arrived at, upon discovering that, unlike previous generations which flip on the sensor upon firing up a phone call or Skype conversation, the 4S kicks on the infrared detectors whenever the screen turns on. T-Mobile USA Q3 2011 earnings: income and smartphone subscribers rise, net income at $332m
T-Mobile USA issued its third quarter financials, and things are looking up over last quarter -- if only just slightly. The carrier posted service revenues of $4.67 billion -- that's a modest 0.1 percent increase over the second quarter, but down 0.9 percent over this time last year. Net income, meanwhile is at $332 million -- up 57-percent from Q2 2011 and four-percent from Q3 2010. The quarter also saw the addition of 126,000 customers (includes postpaid and prepaid users)-- a marked improvement from the loss of 50,000 last quarter. Here's an ARM duo to digest this fine morning -- ARM's president (and co-founder) Tudor Brown has announced that he'll be retiring in May after serving a bit over a score with the company. Google's Chromebooks may have been non-starters on their arrival in June, PC field reports alleged on Thursday. Between arrival and the end of July, Acer's Cromia 700 shipped just 5,000 units, Digitimes' tipsters claimed. Samsung's higher-priced Series 5 would have sold less than that.

WELDER is an interesting take on the word game "genre" for iOS -- it is indeed a puzzle game where you need to make and spell words to score points, but this one is sort of a weird mix of Bejeweled and Scrabble (kind of like Bookworm, actually). You get a grid of letters (and some special blocks) on the screen, and you have to move those around in different ways to line up words and get the points rolling. The game isn't actually timed, so the focus is all on making as many words as you can in as few moves as possible.

Telekom kann Konzerngewinn steigern

T-Mobile expects subscriber churn due to iPhone 4S effect
T-Mobile has used its third quarter conference call to admit that it expects to suffer subscriber churn due to the arrival of the iPhone 4S. Alles was ihr braucht ist ein iTunes Backup und ein Programm namens iBackupBot, mit dem sich das Backup editieren lässt. Mit iBackupBot nimmt man sich dann das Backup vor, wo eine Preference-Datei namens com.apple.mobileslideshow.plist gefunden werden muss, in der dann nur die Zeile EnableFirebreak hinzugefügt wird (allerdings an einer ganz bestimmten Stelle). Acer, ASUS cut ultrabook orders by 40% after poor 1st month
Acer and ASUS were understood late Wednesday to have cut their current ultrabook orders by 40 percent after poor sales in the first month. Having originally targeted their total orders at between 250,000 to 300,000 each, Digitimes heard from contract ODMs (original design makers) that systems like the Acer Aspire S3 and ASUS Zenbook were down to between just 150,000 to 180,000. Their relatively high prices for normally budget-focused PC builders wasn't the only factor, the sources claimed, as the PCs themselves weren't stacking up to the MacBook Air.

Jobs' 'Lost Interview' trailer surfaces on YouTube
An hour-long interview with author Bob Cringely interviewing Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in 1995 is at the heart of the new film Steve Jobs: The Lost Interview, which will be playing starting November 19th. A trailer for the film has appeared on YouTube, showing excerpts of the 1995 interview, when Jobs was still with NeXT Computer but shortly before he would sell the company to Apple and eventually return as CEO.

Autodesk expands real-world 3D maker product line
Computer-aided design (CAD) software maker Autodesk is promoting new technology the company has recently acquired by pushing out two new programs -- one of which is currently exclusive to Mac -- that take designs or photographs and help turn them into viable 3D models for either computer use or physical objects. Joining the company's earlier 123D and 123D Sculpt are the new 123D Catch (for Windows) and 123D Make (for OS X), Architosh reports.

Adobe: mobile Flash exit means Google TV must change too
Adobe has followed up its cancellation of mobile Flash with a statement extending that end to TVs as well. The company would continue to give support to those using the Porting Kit to convert Flash to apps on TV, but it told GigaOM that it would press hardware makers to build native apps instead. It went so far as to indirectly suggest that Google TV had been taking the wrong route with its focus on the web until the Google TV 2.0 update.

Ron Johnson, former Apple retail chief, rebuilding Apple staff at JC Penney
Ron Johnson left Apple as head of retail at the beginning of this month to run J.C. Penney, and apparently he's wasting no time rebuilding an Apple-style shop over there. The Wall Street Journal reports that he's aiming to bring both former Apple executives Daniel Walker and Michael Kramer on the staff there, essentially recreating part of the group that ran Apple from the year 2000 to 2005. Walker actually brought Johnson on at Apple, and it seems like the group is coming back together to do at the clothing retail company what they helped to do at Apple Inc.

Polaroid releases Z340 Instant Digital Camera, Gaga's Grey Label snapper still on the edge of glory
It may not be as flashy as the pop icon's as-of-yet-unreleased Grey Label shooter, but the Polaroid Z340 digital camera certainly bears a striking resemblance. Looking like the GL30 before it puts its face on, the Z340 offers up 14 megapixel stills and comes with a $300 price tag. Infinity Blade II previewed, has bigger world, more enemies, and new gear features
With the launch of Infinity Blade II just a few short weeks away, Chair has shown the game off to IGN Wireless, and they report that it looks terrific. The game mostly follows in the path of the first title, with the player having to navigate a path over and over while upgrading their equipment and skills while doing so. But this time around, the "loop" is significantly bigger (with an intro section that's apparently as long as the last game), and there's another reason for going around it a few times, which we'll learn as we play through the game.

FCC's low-income Internet includes $250 PCs, $10 access
Private industry is chipping in to help increase adoption of computer technology and broadband access in the US. FCC chairman, Julius Genachowski, announced today that the private sector will be contributing up to $4 billion in hardware and services to as many as 17 million low-income families. As part of the program, Microsoft will be offering $250 computers and the cable companies will be providing broadband Internet access for $10 a month.

RIM warns of more BlackBerry delays in Europe
RIM's troubles were compounded Wednesday after it confirmed that its EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) and Indian users were facing delays. While not an outage, users weren't getting BlackBerry Messenger chats or e-mail on time. It didn't yet have a cause or an estimated time for a fix as of the evening.
