The program, which came to light more than a week ago, began with three San Francisco Bay-area stores, then expanded to New York City stores. The latest reports have the program expanded to further flagship stores beginning Thursday.

Samsung requests iPhone 4S source code in Australian court
Samsung continues is counter-assault on Apple in Australia, now requesting that Apple show it the the subsidy agreements that the company has with the Australian carriers and also the source code to the iPhone 4S firmware.
Samsung's attorneys told the court that the company needed both the carrier agreements and the firmware source code in order to prove that there are grounds for a ban of the iPhone 4S in Australia. Samsung alleges that the technology used in the iPhone 4S infringes on three of its patents. According to Apple, Samsung had agreed to license those patents under the Fair, Reasonable, and Non-Discriminatory terms (FRAND) standard.
Samsung has also tried to get the iPhone 4S banned in

Apple staff: Tim Cook more administrative, open than Jobs
Recently appointed Apple CEO Tim Cook is making some, though not fundamental, changes in the approach to management over the late Steve Jobs, insiders disclosed Tuesday. While he's already known to more actively contact staff, the Wall Street Journal sources also understood that he was overseeing tasks common to CEOs but which Jobs had seldom involved himself with, such as corporate reporting and promotions. Cook is described as more "accessible" and, during Jobs' second tenure, was often an advisor on how to approach the co-founder on a given subject.

Smartphone wars: Android "has half of the UK smartphone market"
Kantar Worldpanel ComTech -- a prominent market research firm and a powerful figure on the Scrabble board -- today released its latest "smartphone OS barometer" report, and it has some noteworthy conclusions in it about the British market. Specifically, the report claims that in the 12 weeks ending 2nd October 2011, iOS market share in the UK was 18.5% whereas Android was more than two-and-a-half times that -- 49.9% of all new smartphone sales. Apple's share at this time last year was 32.9%, compared to 28.8% for Android. In the US, Kantar's numbers show an even stronger tilt in Android's favour: 66.4% Android, 21.5% iOS.
Beyond the head-line grabbing Apple-vs-Android story, there is other interesting data in the report. In the UK

Twelve South's PlugBug solves all your charging needs
We've appreciated TwelveSouth's work before -- the BookBook especially has earned some praise from various members of the TUAW staff. But I definitely like this new item, called the PlugBug. Yes, it's a standard charger, designed to combine both your iPhone or iPad and your MacBook (Air, standard, or Pro) into one outlet. There are a few devices that will do that, including, you know, just a usual power strip.
But I really like the look of this one, and the fact that it seamlessly combines with all of Apple's usual cords and hardware. That top red part is essentiall

Lego CD / DVD ripper lets you drop your physical media -- literally (video)
If the only thing standing between you and a full abandonment of physical media is the tedious task of ripping all of your CDs and DVDs, boy have we got the Lego-based gadget for you. Paul Rea whipped up this little beauty -- it's an Arduino-powered Lego arm that swings to pick up a disc, deposit it in the drive and then drop it (perhaps a bit too literally) into a finished pile. It's not quite perfect -- the arm is a bit loud as it moves, and anyone who's ever owned CDs or DVDs may likely grimace as the thing tosses finished discs into a pile, but it's an entertaining break from what can ultimately prove an arduous task.

Two new Mac malware concerns: Tsunami and DevilRobber
As reported yesterday by Computerworld, there are two malware threats for OS X to concern yourself with (temporarily). The first, Tsunami, isn't much of a threat yet. The other, DevilRobber, may be slowing your Mac down as we speak. Here's more info on each of them.
Tsunami
Basically a ported version of some rather old Linux malware, Tsunami isn't being seen widely just yet. Still, the trojan appears to be evolving, and has even been updated for Ma

Amtrak recently announced that the free service is currently available on twelve of its East Coast routes, which should please many a railway commuter accustomed to WiFi deprivation. Apple gave iPhone and iPod touch owners parity in its creative apps once more on Tuesday by launching a universal version of GarageBand ($5, App Store). The new 1.1 update makes use of more contextual menus and panning to accommodate the smaller screens. The change curbs musicians to seeing four tracks at a time and less of a given instrument, although a whole drum set stays visible.

Google rolls out new look for Gmail: streamlined conversation view, high-res themes, better search
Google gave us a hint of Gmail's new look with a preview earlier this year, and it's now finally begun to roll out the real thing. Sometime over the next few days you should see a "switch to the new look" link in the bottom right corner of Gmail which, if clicked, will open up a range of new features and design changes. Those include a streamlined conversation view (complete with profile pictures), three different density settings (plus "elastic density" based on your display), a new batch of high resolution themes, improved search, and a refined navigation panel. Apple brings GarageBand to iPod touch and iPhone users, because rocking out shouldn't require a tablet
Lookie here -- an iPad app just got miniaturized. It's not too often we see the progress work in reverse, but one of Apple's flagship iPad programs has just been converted for use on the iPhone and iPod touch. It doesn't seem as if too much is changing -- outside of the shrunken display options, of course. You can still plug your electric guitar into either of Apple's more bantam iOS devices in order to record through classic amps and stompbox effects, or record your voice or any acoustic sound using the built-in micropho

Little lost iPad arrives home: From Italy to Australia to the US
Remember our lost iPad story? Greg from Australia was vacationing in Italy. He found an iPad in his hotel room. He tried to send it back from Italy, but when that fell through he brought it home to Australia with him.
When Apple said they wouldn't help repatriate the iPad and Greg discovered the insane shipping charges involved due to the unit's built-in battery, he turned to TUAW for assistance. TUAW put out a call for help, and soon offers were pouring in.

How not to buy an iPhone overseas
It kind of seems like I can't catch a break when it comes to iPhone launches. The first iPhone debuted a little over a year before I left the US and moved to New Zealand. I knew the move was coming, so signing (then breaking) a two-year contract with AT&T didn't make sense. I also wasn't prepared to pay US$599 for a cell phone. "That's more than my PlayStation 3 cost!" I said at the time. (Guess which device I use more often now.)
The iPhone 3G launched in New Zealand eight days after I moved here, and the color drained from my face when I saw how much Vodafone was charging for it. Vodafone once again

Daily iPhone App: Fara
Fara is quite a game. The gameplay itself new -- in fact, the script even jokes that the hack-and-slash, Zelda-style title has been done before (by a guy in a green cap). It's Fara's style that's special. The backgrounds and characters are all hand-painted, and the script's self-referential writing push Fara past its humble gameplay mechanics. Plus, the intro hints at a much larger premise
Fara offers some fun physics twists and the touch controls are well executed. Most of your moves a swipe or a tap, yet I felt fully in control of the character's actions. That's a great sign with an action game like this.
There's a lot of mystery in Fara. So much so that casual gamers might be turned off by its reliance on gaming

Filed under: Lifestyle
"Unsichtbares Glas" will spiegelnden Bildschirmen den Garaus machen
Filed under: Displays

Ready to supersize your favorite RC helicopter and bullseye some perps with an aerial bean bag launcher? The Sheriff's office in Montgomery County, Texas is, and it's really freaking out the local news. KPRC Local 2 News feverishly asks if the Sheriff's new unmanned Shadowhawk helicopter is a safety asset, or a privacy violation -- we just think it's awesome. Built and sold by Vanguard Defense Industries, this wireless whirlybird comes equipped with a remote video camera, an infrared heat-seeking device and an onboard GPS. It's also capable of carrying weapons, although the Sheriff said that there were no plans to weaponize the UAV. The 50-poun

BMW 3 Series gets 'full-color' heads-up display
If you've been hankering for some HUD action in your next auto, you'll have one more choice come next spring: the all-new 2012 BMW 3 Series. The launch will mark the first time a heads-up display has made it into Bavaria's volume seller, after debuting as an optional extra eons ago on its 5 Series. Since then, HUDs of limited hues have permeated München's high-end, splaying speed and navigation directions in the line of sight of road-going elites everywhere. However, this iteration is "full-color," which besides pleasing ROY G. BIV fans, makes it "more intuitive," as the company reasons it'll aid drivers i

iClip is a clipboard and scrapbook utility that allows the user to keep a copy of almost anything that's sent to the clipboard, instead of the last item. iClip is hidden off the side of the Mac's screen, so when the cursor is moved to the side of the screen, iClip pops out right away. The malware, known as OSX/Miner-D or "DevilRobber," steals GPU time to generate counterfeit Bitcoins (part of anonymous digital cash system) and also attempts to steal usernames and passwords through periodic screen captures. It also sends information about the Mac's security setup and browsing history to a remote server.

Daily iPad App: Codify
I've been diving into some rudimentary (very rudimentary, trust me) iOS coding lately, and as soon as I picked up an iPad, one of the first thoughts that occurred to me was the idea of having a version of Xcode (the IDE that Mac and iOS developers use to make their apps) available for the platform. There are plenty of text editors available, and even some designed to actually write code on Apple's tablet. But I haven't seen a way to actually run that code -- until now, that is, with Codify.
To be clear, Codify isn't a Cocoa development tool like Xcode, so you still can't write and run iOS apps right on the device (though I have to believe Apple is indeed work

On the Mac Pro's future
The Mac Pro is a strange outlier among Apple's products. It's insanely powerful, but it's priced out of the reach of most mortals. It's by far Apple's most "traditional" computer; the Mac Pro is a tower you can crack open and customize quite easily, far different from its sealed-up cousins the iMac, Mac mini, and the MacBook line. The Mac Pro's design is positively ancient by Apple's standards, with only minor cosmetic alterations since its predecessor, the Power Mac G5, debuted in 2003. It's also a neglected product, las

Varley's evR450 all-electric supercar set to hit Australian roads next year
As Autoblog Green points out, Australia's Varley Electric Vehicles is known more for bulky industrial vehicles than high-end sports cars, but the company's now looking to change that perception with its new all-electric evR450 supercar. While it'll no doubt turn a few heads simply standing still, it also looks to measure up reasonably well under the hood, boasting a top speed of 200 kilometers per hour (or 124 MPH) and a zero to 100 km/h time of 3.8 seconds. The company's also promising a range of 150 kilometers (or 93 miles) that can be doubled with an optional range-extension pack, although its not letting anyone actually drive the car just yet (or even look under the hood, for that matter). Report: iOS and Android apps fighting for retention, not discovery
The latest Flurry report has an interesting insight for app developers. Over the last few years, as apps have gained more and more attention and users, discovery has been one of the biggest issues developers face: Most devs spend a lot of their time post-release just trying to tell as many people as possible about their app, so they can actually find it in the store and buy it. But Flurry now says that because of the growing amount of tools out there for app discovery, the biggest problem faced by apps isn't getting found anymore. It's trying to get customers to stick around.
As you can see above, app user retention drops off sharply after the first month of usage, and only gets worse from ther
