Maingear and Origin PC shove Intel's Core i7 2700K into gaming rigs, overclock it beyond 5GHz

Dear Aunt TUAW: Are iPad 2 mic issues causing Siri holdbacks?
Dear Aunt TUAW,
This isn't a scientific analysis, but I switched to the Mac in 2004 and have owned every product since without issue. Today, however, I am on my third iPad 2 because the mic keeps dying. It seems statistically unlikely to receive two consecutive iPads with defective mics.
The only reason I notice the issue is because I rely on Skype and FaceTime on my iPad. If this is a non-public but real defect then no wonder they don't want to put pressure on using the mic. Is the hardware different by chance? Design issue?

Condé Nast sees iPad subscription boom with Newsstand
One of the more unsung apps available on the iPad with iOS 5 is Newsstand, Apple's portal for newspapers and magazines. While many iPad users seem to be unaware of the app and its purpose, publisher Condé Nast is reporting that subscriptions for the digital editions of its titles have jumped 268 percent since Newsstand was released on October 12, 2011.

Journalist Brent Schlender shares memories of Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs interacted with many people over the course of his career at Apple, NeXT and Pixar. Employees and journalists covering his companies became part of his inner circle and got a rare glimpse of the real man behind the public persona. One such journalist was famed Fortune writer Brent Schlender.
Schlender followed the career of Steve Jobs starting in 1987, covering him when he was at NeXT and then again as head of Apple. In a recent Fortune article, Schlender recounts his time with Jobs over the past two decades. He tells the story of how Jobs laughed when Schlender called him the "graying prince of a shrinking kingdom" in an article that appeared before Jobs introduced the iPod and turned Apple around.

DirecTV's iPad app updated with live TV streaming, as long as you stay at home

iPads affect the future of hotel Wi-Fi
Hotels are at a crossroads because of the iPad, says a report from the New York Times. Travelers armed with iPads are taxing WiFi internet connections and causing problems for hotels that want to provide reliable internet service for their visitors.
This bandwidth crunch is the result of iPad owners who use their tablet to stream video, browse the internet and work remotely from their hotel room. David W. British man's prosthetic arm doubles as Nokia C7 dock
Smartphones have changed our lives, sure, but for those with only one arm, the touchscreen-centric devices can be a downright nuisance. Trevor Prideaux of Somerset, England has worked out of a solution, with help from Nokia and some folks in the medical community. A prosthetist built the 50-year-old catering manager a limb with a cradle for his Nokia C7, allowing Prideaux to operate the phone with a single hand. Prideaux told The Telegraph that he'd initially approached Apple for assistance with the project, eventually settling on Nokia after the Finnish handset maker agreed to help out.

Hidden within Nokia's Future Lounge, this very flexible display offers up a glimpse of what sort of thing we could possibly be dealing with when we roll up to Nokia World in 2021. The prototype Nokia Kinetic Device, including its display, can be flexed across both the vertical and horizontal planes -- with bending and twisting motions controlling the interface. One nice part about shopping online at Best Buy is the retailer's in-store pickup option. There's no searching the shelves for your item or waiting in a long checkout line. You order what you want online and stroll into the store a few hours later to pick it up. According to a report from 9to5Mac, Apple is now offering the same convenience of in-store pickup at its San Francisco store.
Online shoppers in the San Francisco area will see an option during checkout that'll let them select a store instead of a home address for shipping. Tango video calling service for Windows Phone Mango set to roll out November 7th
We've already seen Tango video calling demonstrated on a Windows Phone Mango handset, and the company has now confirmed that it will indeed be the first video calling service available for the OS. The app is slated to roll out on November 7th, and it will include both some tight integration with the operating system (aided by some input from Microsoft) and hardware acceleration for smoother video calls. Schlaumeier vom japanischen Nagoya Institute of Technology haben einen Roboterunterleib namens BlueBiped entwickelt, der vom "passiven Laufen" nie genug kriegen kann: der Laufapparat setzt unermüdlich ein Aluminiumbein vors andere und das auch noch ohne Motor oder ähnlichen Antrieb, der Energie aus einem Akku verlangen würde. Localscope for iPhone adds tight navigation integration
I liked this 'where am I and what's around me?' app when I first looked at Localscope earlier this year, and it's only gotten better.
The latest version of this US$1.99 app adds integration with Magellan RoadMate, NavFree, Motion X GPS and Sygic. The app already pulls info from most of the other top navigation systems, including Navigon, TomTom and Waze.
It's one of the few apps that doesn't depend on Google for information. You can find nearby businesses using Bing, Foresquare, Twitter and Wikimapia. Sony Ericsson hat 9 Künstler und Designer mit Blanko-Androids aus Acryl-Gussharz ausgestattet, auf dass diese das Bot-Maskottchen individuell gestalten, darunter Anton Unai, Veit Kowald und XOOOOX. Pop Kingdom is a delightful game and similar to Bubble Bobble and Snood. The goal is to shoot orbs to the top of the screen, matching colors in chains of three or more before they fall to the bottom. But there's a twist, in that Pop Kingdom offers RPG elements. You play as either Will or Kate (after a certain royal couple, I guess), who do damage to invading monsters as you match tokens.

Geringer als erwartet fallen die Quartalszahlen von Amazon mit 63 Millionen Dollar Gewinn in diesem Quartal aus, für das vierte Quartal wird sogar vor einem möglichen Verlust von bis zu 200 Millionen Dollar gewarnt. Grund dafür ist Amazons Investitionswut: neue Versandzentren, teure Werbekampagnen, die eigene Tätigkeit als Verlag und die Entwicklung von eigenen Geräten wie zuletzt dem Kindle Fire (der sogar ein Zuschussgeschäft sein soll) kosten ordentlich Geld und bringen bisher noch nicht genug ein, so dass Amazon im Moment auf jeden eingenommenen Dollar nur einen halben Cent Gewinn machte. Unsere Kollegen vom US-amerikanischen Engadget durften das Lumia 800 nach der Vorstellung kurz befingern. Ihr erster Eindruck: es fühlt sich, wenig überraschend, genau wie ein N9 an. Die Polycarbonat-Hülle ist angenehm anzufassen und zerkratzt nicht so leicht wie Plastik oder buntes Metall, da sie durchgefärbt ist. Nokia hat auf der Nokia World 2011 soeben seine neue Asha-Serie enthüllt: angeführt vom 303, das mit Series 40 läuft und mit QWERTY-Keyboard kommt sind sie alle für "die nächste Milliarde" Webnutzer gedacht, also hauptsächlich für Schwellenländer. Alle vier laufen mit Series 40, die Modelle 300 und 301 kommen mit kapazitivem Touchscreen. Beim 200 lassen sich im Betrieb die SIM-Karten wechseln und es bietet 32 GB Speicher, sowohl das 200 als auch das 201 haben besonders laute Lautsprecher, sind also höchst ausgehtauglich bzw in lauten Umgebungen gut einsetzbar. Kennt man ja aus eigener kindlicher Erfahrung: Fahrradahren ohne Stützräder ist gar nicht mal so einfach, dieser Bot namens Primer-V2 hat es aber mit Hilfe eines Gyroskops schon ganz gut drauf und schafft fast 10 km/h dabei. Die Bremstechnik ist bewährt: so lange die Füsse auf den Boden stemmen, bis der Drahtesel stehenbleibt. The US Apple Store is down
Apple's online store has gone down. When the store goes down in the middle of the week it's often an indication that new stuff is in the wings, but that's not always the case. The recent MacBook Pro refresh snuck in completely under the radar, after all, and sometimes Apple takes the store offline for maintenance or minor tweaks.
Oddly enough, as of this writing it seems only the US Apple Store is down. All the international stores we've checked so far still seem to be up. One possible addition to

Laut einem Bericht des Charlotte Observer in North Carolina plant Apple neben seinem neuen Rechenzentrum die Errichtung einer zugehörigen Solaranlage, um vermutlich eine ökologischere Stromversorgung der Server zu erreichen. Das erste iPhone wurde auf der MacWorld San Francisco des Jahres 2007 demonstriert. LG posts a net loss for Q3, loses ground in mobile sales
The Q3 numbers for LG are in, showing its cellphone unit lost money for the sixth straight quarter, with profits coming from its home appliance and air conditioning units. Windows XP turns 10, enjoys its golden years and slow transition into retirement
It's hard to believe that it was ten years ago today that Windows XP first hit retail shelves. It's even more astonishing when you realize that it was still the most popular operating system in the world until the beginning of this month. The sun may finally be setting on the stalwart OS that has powered countless home and business PCs (it crossed the 400 million mark way back in 2006), but it's still number two -- right behind it's youngest brother Windows 7 and well ahead of the black sheep, Vista.

John McCarthy, AI pioneer, dies at 84
It might be a stretch to suggest that there'd be no AI without John McCarthy, but at the very least, we'd likely be discussing the concept much differently. The computer scientist, who died on Sunday at 84, is credited with coining the term "Artificial Intelligence" as part of a proposal for a Dartmouth conference on the subject. The event, held in 1956, is regarded as a watershed moment for the subject.
