Mac app localization now easier with Tethras
For many independent or smaller-scale Mac developers, the promise and profits of international distribution for their apps is obscured behind a very practical challenge: internationalizing their projects, which can take months and plenty of money/resources as all the interface items are translated to the target language.
Starting today, that's going to become a bit simpler. The Tethras mobile application localization service, which supported iOS along with other major mobile platforms, is extending full support to localizing OS X applications as well. Developers will be able to chat with the Tethras team at the MacTech conference in San Francisco on November 2. [TUAW is a media sponsor of the MacTech conference. -Ed.]

Call me Ishmael: creating a Siri nickname for yourself
Surely you've heard the joke. You tell Siri, "Call me an ambulance" and Siri responds, "From now on, I'll call you, 'An Ambulance', Okay?" As Leanna Lofte points out in a great writeup over at the iPhone Blog, that this joke can actually be of practical use.
You can create a more friendly identity for yourself by telling Siri to call you by your nickname, or simply indulge your monomaniacal streak by instructing her to call you "Master" or "Emperor" or similar.
Siri does this by checking out two fields in your primary Contacts entry. The Nickname field takes priority. When you say "Call me 'Master,'" Siri updates your nickname field directly. Keep

Verizon gets its first micro SIM cards with LTE
Verizon is now receiving its first LTE-capable micro SIM cards, SlashGear learned. This is important news as it paves the way for use of an LTE-capable iPad on the network. Secondly, it very simply takes up less physical space than full-sized SIM cards and should help in the creation of ever-smaller hardware.

Rumor: iPad 3 could use redesigned Dock Connector
Apple might use the iPad 3 to kick off its first redesign of its longstanding Dock Connector if a rumor is authentic. The design, mentioned by a "reliable Asian source" to Macotakara and spotted in a TVC-Mall listing, would still be electrically compatible and use 30 pins but would be significantly smaller. The part is visibly different than the iPad 2 connector, with considerably less of a footprint.

Smart Cover unlock bug may lead to iPad 2 data exposure
The folks at 9to5 Mac have noticed that Apple's iPad 2 Smart Cover lets you bypass a passcode lock on a device running iOS 5, albeit with limited access to the iPad's applications. Here's how the bug/exploit works.

ASUS Zenbook UX31 review
It was just last week that we got to take home the Acer Aspire S3, the first Ultrabook to go on sale here in the States. Unfortunately, it doesn't live up to the pillars laid out by Intel: its performance trails similar machines, its battery craps out early and the design, while portable, is too chintzy to make it a bellwether for skinny Windows laptops. MacBook Pro: Neue Modelle zu alten Preis ab nächster Woche?

10-year-old girl has memorable experience at Apple Store
The Consumerist has posted a cute story about a 10-year-old girl whose purchasing of an iPod touch was made rather special by an Apple Store manager in Utah.
As the story goes, the particular young lady has wanted an iPod touch for quite some time. So much so that she saved her birthday and allowance money over the last 9 months so that she could finally afford to buy one for herself (I think a lot of us could learn a little something about this alone)!
Accompanied by her mother, she arrived at the Gateway Apple Store at 10:30 AM. Both were greeted by two Apple employees who told them that the store was closed from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and that they could not shop now. The mother exp

Zite adds much-requested support for shared iPads
Zite, which makes the namesake iPad magazine app (free, App Store), has now added a new feature that lets users create and switch between more than one user profiles on the same iPad. Called Sybil, it's meant to recommend personalized content to each member of a household rather than keep contents private. The feature was born after Zite's survey of over 300 iPad users found that about a third share their tablets with others.

Beeri: Siri's new best friend cracks open a cold one (video)
We already know that Siri can send texts, check the weather or find you a restaurant, but did you know she can also fetch you a beer. Well, sort of with a little hacking. The folks at Redpepper dreamed up Beeri, an RC truck that cracks open a can of brew whenever it receives a tweet instructing it to "pour." New MacBook Pros now tipped for early November
New leaks have moved back the late 2011 MacBook Pro update to early November. A previously accurate AppleInsider source said that the notebooks had been penned in for late September but were delayed after the iPhone 4S' October 14 release had been solidified. Rather than risk diminishing iPhone efforts and overshadowing the Mac, Apple reportedly left the date in flux and told resellers not to expect more systems until the November schedule.

Siri can pour you a beer, perfect for Friday Afternoon Club
I think I may have to make Siri my mistress, since she (well, it does have a female voice in the U.S.) can now pour a beer at my command. That's more than my wife of 32 years will do for me! The folks at redpepper, an ad agency in Nashville, Tennessee, had a little time on their hands, so they rigged up a way for a Siri command to open and pour a beer.
It's a bit messy, and it doesn't look like the entire contents of the 12 ounce can make it into the glass, but it's certain fun to watch. Android Ice Cream Sandwich includes native stylus support
Styli and Android haven't exactly been strangers as of late -- with devices like the HTC Flyer and Samsung Galaxy Note offering pen-based input -- but it looks like that option will soon be even easier to implement with Ice Cream Sandwich. DARPA's Dr. Fankenllite could plunder space graves, create orbital abominations (video)
There are countless satellites, long deactivated, orbiting the Earth in what amounts to a giant cemetery in the sky. DARPA's Phoenix program sees these piles of junk not as refuse, but as a resource just waiting to be harvested. Intel Xeon E5 may be delayed to early 2012
Newly uneatherd details from Intel's roadmap suggest that Intel's long-in-waiting mid-range Xeon replacement, the E5, might not ship until 2012. Previously on tap for late 2011, they're now "delayed by one quarter," CPU World claimed. No reason was given as to why, or whether or not it meant going to the same 22 nanometer process as Ivy Bridge.

Daily iPhone App: Mage Gauntlet
I'll be straightforward on this one: Mage Gauntlet is one of the best iOS games of the year. It's a throwback RPG to the 16-bit days of Secret of Mana and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, put together by Rocketcat Games, the folks responsible for the great Hook Champ and subsequent Hook Worlds titles. You play as a girl in a world of magic, who just happens to be nonmagical, and while the story is cute and fun, the gameplay here is the real draw -- this is old school action RPG all the way.
The look is extremely polished and well done, the music of the game is some of the best I've heard on a handheld title in a long time, and the game offer

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus hits US for $399 on Nov. 13
Samsung brought one of its more important tablets to the US Friday with plans to sell the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus in the US. The seven-inch tablet should reach the country on November 13 with pre-orders at Amazon, Best Buy, and elsewhere starting October 23. International iPhone 4S pre-orders begin
The iPhone 4S launched last week in seven countries and got off to a big bang. Apple said it would roll out the handset to 22 total countries by the end of the month and is making good on that promise.
Starting today, the next generation iPhone is now available for pre-order in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

ITC dismisses Google, T-Mobile concerns in HTC case
The US International Trade Commission has dismissed public interest statements from Google and T-Mobile regarding a possible ban on HTC Android devices, reports say. In July HTC was ruled to be violating two Apple patents. The ITC is now reviewing that decision, and is scheduled to make a final decision on December 6th. The public is regularly invited to make statements on the potential damage of an import ban once a patent violation has been declared.

Amazon Prime Instant Video expands its library with even more video from PBS
PBS has been down with Amazon's Prime Instant Video service since it launched, and now it's providing even more all-you-can-eat video for streaming under an expanded agreement. Naturally that means lots of episodes of NOVA and Antiques Roadshow, and "for the first time on digital video", 200 episodes of The French Chef with Julia Child. Zite adds personal profiles to its iPad news app
If you find yourself fighting over the iPad with your significant other to get your fix of news from Zite, there is finally a happy ending to the debate.
Since Zite learns what you like to read and adjusts your personal mix of news accordingly, it was pretty messy if more than one person shared the same iPad. As of today, Zite now allows multiple profiles with a new feature called Sybil, which has the ability to log in to get the news selection that Zite has learned. So if you hand your iPad to someone and they log in under their own profile, the news mix will be personal for that person. Acer posts $36.3m loss, iPad continues to bite
Acer continued to struggle in coping with Apple on Friday after it posted a loss equivalent to $36.3 million. The drop wasn't as steep as the $234.2 million from the spring thanks to the Taiwan PC bulider writing off the $150 million in 'abnormalities' of unsold PCs in Europe. The result still dashed earlier hopes of turning back to profit for Acer, which still expects to post an overall loss for the year.

Steve Jobs vowed to "destroy Android" according to biography
Steve Jobs doesn't like Android and considers the mobile OS to be Apple's main competitor. It was apparent in the Q4 2010 earnings conference call when he discussed the mobile operating system and berated competitor's adoption of the 7-inch tablet. And this same hostility is very apparent in his biography.

Catcher hopes to have MacBook Air plant working by November
A supplier of MacBook Air aluminum casings, Catcher Technology, recently had to shut down a plant in Eastern China following complaints by neighbors of "strange odors" emanating from the facility. While this could have been a concern for a critical part of the supply chain for one of Apple's most popular Mac products, the manufacturer says the plant should be back up and running by November.

Strategy Analytics: iPad share dropped very slightly in Q3
Apple only lost about 1.3 percent of tablet market share in the summer as Android tablets hit full swing, Strategy Analytics found in its latest study. The 11.12 million iPads shipped gave it 67 percent of the space, down from 68.3 percent in the spring. Android made up 27 percent of the rest, with the BlackBerry PlayBook making up most of the rest.

Rumors: Windows Phone won't get dual-core, Retina for a year
Windows Phone might repeat history and go without competitive high-end features until Windows Phone 8, according to a pair of tips. Historically accurate MS_Nerd claims that Apollo, WP8's codename, will add a Chassis 3 spec that brings the dual-core processors that Android and iPhone users already have. Sprint capping 4G data for tablets, modems in November
Sprint in a policy update late Thursday took to further curbing uses of non-phone data by capping 4G. It now makes no distinction between 3G and 4G and uses the same 3GB, 5GB, and 10GB caps for both. Both technologies share one cap as well as the same overage fees of five cents per megabyte, with no more than 300MB of data before overages outside of Sprint's own network.

iPhone 4S kostet in der Herstellung nur 188 Dollar
iSuppli hat endlich mal ein iPhone 4S komplett auseinander genommen und die Materialien auf ihre Kosten überprüft. Herausgekommen ist ein Komplettpreis von 188 Dollar (32GB sind 207$, 64GB 245$). Darin fehlen natürlich wie immer die Kosten für Software, Lizenzen etc. Das iPhone 4 kostete vor einem Jahr in der Herstellung übrigens 187,51 Dollar. Die wichtigen Neuerungen. ASUS Zenbook UX21 teardown shows MacBook Air similarity
A new teardown of the ASUS Zenbook UX21 at AnandTech has shown that its internal design, just like the outside, is very similar to the MacBook Air. Partly out of necessity, the 11-inch ultrabook uses the same basic concept of a two-board core area at the back while the front two thirds are dominated by four discrete lithium batteries. Likewise, it uses the same stick-based SSD format, although here the drives are supplied by ADATA (128GB) and SanDisk (256GB) rather than Samsung and Toshiba.

Verizon Wireless sells 2 million iPhone 4 handsets in Q3 2011
Verizon Wireless announced its Q3 2011 earnings on Friday and confirmed it sold 2 million iPhones last quarter and a total of 6.5 million total this year. Verizon profit doubles in Q3 as it activates 2m iPhones

Shortly after iFixit tore down the iPhone 4S, iSuppli also took its turn with the iPhone 4S and evaluated the cost of the materials that go into the handset. Wide Danish study: cellphones don't cause brain cancer
The frequently contradicting studies on cellphones producing cancer leaned against such a verdict late Thursday after the publication of a Danish study. A very large 358,403-person, 18-year Institute of Cancer Epidemiology project in the British Medical Journal showed 356 instances of gilomas (brain cancer variants) and 846 central nervous system cancers, the same ratio as for those who didn't have a cellphone at all. Not all users had the the same use, but even those who had a cellphone for a long time, up to 13 years, showed no increased rate.

We'd heard rumblings that unlimited data for Sprint's mobile hotspot plan was going the way of the dodo, but come November folks, it'll be official. Here's a little souvenir for Twitter addicts eyeing the upcoming PS Vita: at today's debut event in Hong Kong, we got to see said console's built-in Twitter app in action for the very first time, and we were fortunate enough to get some exclusive hands-on time with Sony's in-house software. For all the buzz around Samsung's latest hi-def smartphone, the absence of one little word has largely been glossed over. That word is "Plus" -- the wizened Galaxy S II has a "Super AMOLED Plus" display, for example, whereas the sparkly Galaxy Nexus is merely "Super AMOLED." Es tut sich was auf dem Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. Die große News für alle Google+ Mitstreiter. Die Klarnamen Pflicht soll aufgehoben werden. Etwas wofür wirklich lange protestiert wurde. Es wird allerdings nicht einfach so werden, dass man jetzt angibt was man will, sondern Pseudonyme sollen als Option implementiert werden bestätigten Vic Gundotra und Sergey Brin, deshalb wird es wohl noch eine Weile dauern. Die zweite wichtige News zu Google+: Es wird für Google Apps kommen, und zwar schon in den nächsten Tagen. Da ist eine Integration von Google+ in Google Reader schon fast Nebensache.

Toshiba Mobile Display hat ein neues Tablet-Display vorgestellt, welches eine beeindruckende Pixeldichte von fast 500 ppi erreicht. Bei einer Größe von 6,1 Zoll bietet das Full-HD-fähige LTPS-Panel (Low Temperature Poly Silicon) eine Auflösung von 2.560 x 1.600 Pixeln. Und los geht es. Vor zwei Tagen wurde das Android 4.0 SDK veröffentlicht, und schon haben ein paar Coder Ice Cream Sandwich auf dem Nexus S 4G laufen. Google hatte zwar eh schon ein Upgrade angekündigt, aber warum warten. Das ROM ist noch nicht veröffentlicht, weil es wohl noch ein paar "Bugs" gibt (kein WiFi, Bluetoth, 4G) aber wir werden wohl damit rechnen können, dass auch andere Ports nicht all zu lange brauchen werden.

NVIDIA CEO confirms Tegra roadmap, building all now: Kal-El, Wayne, Logan, Stark
NVIDIA's historically outspoken CEO, Mr. Jen-Hsun Huang, just took the stage here at AsiaD, and among other things, he confirmed to Walt that the Tegra roadmap is well established, and in fact, the entire next-gen range is being produced (internally, of course) right now. Catcher aims to have MacBook Air plant back by November
Catcher's MacBook Air plant shutdown should be rectified by November, the company said late Thursday. It planned to spend between $2 million to $3 million to improve its equipment at the aluminum casing factory to cut back on gas emissions and alleviate environmental concerns. Microsoft to keep Windows Phone monogamous with Qualcomm's chipsets, for now
Microsoft may not be jumping on the dual-core bandwagon just yet, but it does place a high amount of emphasis on making sure its phones run smoothly. To do so, Windows Phone President Andy Lees stated to Bloomberg that it would continue to keep Qualcomm as its exclusive chipmaker, and has no plans to work with any other company. Steve Jobs wanted his successor at Apple to act independently, Apple board member and former vice president Al Gore said in a discussion at AsiaD. The late CEO had talks about "cultivating a team" that could work well on its own at every board meeting, and he expected that to continue after he left. Apple updates Canon, FujiXerox printer drivers
Apple late today release updated printer drivers for Canon and FujiXerox printers, scanners and AIO units via its Software Update mechanism. The Canon update brings almost all of the company's drivers up to v10.42.1.0 and adds some new models as well, while the FujiXerox update changes the version on a handful of the company's many supported printers to either v2.1 or v2.2, leaving most of them (including some new-model additions) at v2.0.

First iPhone 4S TV commercial features Siri
The first iPhone 4S ad has aired on TV and very prominently features Siri, the voice-activated personal assistant exclusive to Apple's newest handset. The ad shows several people talking to their iPhones, asking questions, looking up directions, setting up reminders -- all in very natural language. Siri itself doesn't appear until near the end of the video, though, so people who've never heard of the feature before may find this commercial somewhat confusing at first.

Myriad's Remarkz HTML 5 web annotation app hands-on
It wasn't that long ago that Myriad gave us an exclusive sneak peek at its platform agnostic Android app emulator, Alien Dalvik 2.0. While we were there, the company gave us a glimpse of another project, called Remarkz, that piqued our interest. Remarkz is a slick little HTML 5 application that lets users annotate web pages with text and drawings and share the marked up pages via email, Facebook and Twitter. As opposed to using screen grab programs like Skitch or Jing, Remarkz keeps the web page links live and only requires adding a bookmark to get started.

First iPhone 4S TV ad appears: 'say hello'

Smart Cover can allow unauthorized, limited access to iPad 2
Users who have a passcode on their iPad 2 running iOS 5 should be aware that in one particular circumstance, the passcode can be bypassed and allow limited access to the iPad 2 simply by using a smart cover (or any similar cover that uses Apple's magnet-based system for waking the iPad 2 from sleep), a German Mac website reports. The passcode barrier works as expected if the iPad is simply put to sleep, but an incomplete powering-off sequence leaves the device vulnerable.

Boost Mobile announces ZTE Warp, hopes to push its lineup out of impulse on November 2nd for $250
After Tuesday's Ice Cream Sandwich announcement in Hong Kong, pushing out a Gingerbread device just doesn't feel like we're leaping to the final frontier, but it's still nice to have on a prepaid plan nonetheless. HP conducted the first big corporate shakeup since it fired Leo Apotheker on Thursday after it said its chief strategy and technology officer Shane Robison would retire as of November 1. While characterized as a graceful exit, it said Robison wouldn't be replaced. The move was to bring "strategy, research and development" more directly into HP, pointing to the restructuring as the primary incentive.

How to type "comma" using Siri
Steve Sande and I have been collaborating on "Talking to Siri," an ebook that will soon hit the Kindle store. It's a how-to that will help you get the most done with your Siri intelligent assistant.
One of the questions that people keep asking us is "how do I spell out the word 'comma' or 'period'," in other words, how do you dictate the literal word instead of punctuation.
Fortunately, there is a solution for this. It's not a clean solution or an easy one, but it can be done. To type out comma, for example, you dictate no caps on, no space on, C O M M A, no space off, no caps off.
This tells Siri to start a forced lower-case mode without spaces. You then spell out the word in question (comma, here). At the end, you return to normal dictation mode by disabling that

First music video shot with the iPhone 4S
A band called The Turnback nabbed a few iPhone 4Ses as quickly as they could, and scheduled a music video shoot right around launch, opting to be the first to fire off a music video using just the iPhone 4S and its new HD camera. As you can see below, it looks pretty good -- not quite as good as a full HD video, I think, but not bad. For a phone camera, it's great.
The video was even shot in the new 1080p mode, and was cut together on Final Cut Pro. As a proof of concept, at least, it works, and it shows that aside from all of the splashy news around Siri, the camera adds yet another nice feature to the latest and greatest iPhone.

Oracle can use Google e-mail admitting Android patent issues
Oracle obtained a key ruling Thursday after Judge William Alsup determined that it was allowed to use internal Google e-mail admitting patent problems in Android as evidence in its lawsuit over Java copyrights and patents. Alsup determined that Google had "failed to identify any aspect" of Oracle's demand that was either mistaken or illegal. Attorney-client privilege didn't cover the messages, he said.

Users reporting iWork documents being deleted via iCloud
Reports are coming into Apple's support forums that a serious bug in the way iCloud syncing is handling iWork documents -- those created by Pages, Numbers or Keynote -- is causing the files to be deleted upon a fresh sync, leaving mobile iWork app users in particular with lost documents and no apparent way to get the work back (Mac users can recover the documents via their Time Machine or other backup devices).

Death Rally is a great iOS title from Remedy Entertainment, the makers of the Alan Wake game for the Xbox 360 a little while back. Microsoft says 'traditional' PCs up 14%, hints iPad effect
Microsoft in discussing its summer results Thursday was evasive on acknowledging the iPad's effect on PC sales. It estimated that the PC field grew just one to three percent but used metrics that made it seem bigger, claiming that Windows copies for "traditional" PCs, excluding netbooks and Windows tablets, were up 14 percent. The software developer also pointed to business PCs growing five percent to a new high of 35 million.

T(ether) is a bit like that amazing Reality Fighters game we saw on the PS Vita, except it's more tranquil and it works slightly differently. The tablet-based technology uses motion capture cameras to track users' heads and the orientation of the device itself, building a 1:1 spatial connection between real and virtual coordinates and allowing "intuitive interaction with volumetric data." iRig MIDI and SampleTank for iOS review

Sony delays NEX-7, Alpha A65 cameras over Thailand floods
Sony has warned that it has delayed indefinitely the introduction of two of its latest cameras as a result of recent flooding in Thailand. The company has been forced to shut down two of its three production units in the country, including those that had been preparing to roll out the new NEX-7 and Alpha A65 cameras. A worldwide shortage of hard drives as well is expected in the aftermath of the flooding.
