Apple's earnings "miss" more an issue with overzealous analysts
Apple reported its quarterly earnings earlier this week and the results were lower than expected. This miss was widely reported and Apple's stock took a hit dropping from above 420 before the announcement to under 400 on Thursday afternoon. But whose fault is this negative financial report? Is it Apple's failure to perform this past quarter or analyst's overenthusiastic predictions that led to this uncharacteristic stumble.

Microsoft and Brightpoint buddy up to deliver Windows Phone to Middle East and Africa
Microsoft's sights have clearly been set on expanding its Windows Phone empire into emerging markets, considering its recent interest in developing Tango, a low-cost version of its mobile OS due out next year. Intel ships Ivy Bridge, may still not sell until spring 2012
Intel while discussing its banner summer results revealed that it had just started mass-producing Ivy Bridge processors. The first wave should be qualified for sale late in 2011 and ship to partners in late November or December. Like most Intel launches, it should include both desktop and notebook processors.

OCOSMOS OSC9 tablet exports to US by December

Android's Andy Rubin is not a fan of Siri
Siri is the talk of the town now that the iPhone 4S is in the hands of over four million customers. There has been a deluge of articles about using Siri, funny phrases it says and even clever hacks that let third-party companies tap into the service. Apple and its fans may be excited by the voice recognition technology, but one of Google's executives is not overly impressed.

Microsoft has record Q1, rakes in $17.37 billion in revenue
Q1 of 2012 (don't ask) was good to Microsoft. Very good in fact. The company posted a record first quarter revenue of $17.37 billion, a 7-percent increase over the same period last year and slightly higher than the $17.26 billion that was expected. The big hero was Office which accounted for $5.62 billion of that income, though sales of Windows stayed flat and fell somewhat short of expectations. Microsoft lands record Q3, sees Windows sales up just 2%
Microsoft posted record results for the summer that were nonetheless muted. Its profit was up six percent from year to year but was enough to get it a new high of $17.37 billion in pure revenue, up seven percent, and a six percent hike in profit to $5.74 billion. Most of this came from the Business and Server groups, which grew eight and ten points each to make $5.62 billion and $4.25 billion each.

Apple has unveiled plans for an iOS 5 Tech Talk World Tour. Apple experts are scheduled to visit nine cities during the tour, including Berlin, London, Rome, Beijing, Seoul, São Paolo, New York City, Seattle, and Austin. Windows Phone to get NFC, more device variety in 2012
Microsoft's mobile president Andy Lees added to Windows Phone plans for the year early Thursday with confirmation of plans to add NFC to Windows Phone. Devices should start getting the short-range wireless support sometime in 2012. The step would help put them on par with the leading edge of Android and BlackBerry hardware and pay in shops or share data just by tapping the phone.

Jobs 'regretted' trying alternative medicine, says author
Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs "regretted" initially opting for alternative medicine to treat his pancreatic cancer instead of going straight to surgery, says Walter Isaacson. The biography writer will appear in a 60 Minutes interview Sunday, at 7PM Eastern and Pacific time, but CBS has today published an early excerpt. If you're like us, you spend most of your waking hours attempting to figure out a way to enjoy your vinyl collection on the go. ABI: iPads have passed netbooks, Android phones rule Asia
Dueling ABI studies marked two milestones for mobile technology. Getting details on netbook shipments, it found that mobile tablets had passed netbooks for the first time with about 13.6 million shipping versus 7.3 million of the primarily Windows-based netbooks. Toshiba shows off 6-inch tablet display with 498ppi resolution
Toshiba showed off a 4-inch display for cellphones with a 367ppi resolution earlier this year, and it's now back with an even higher pixel density for its new 6.1-inch display for tablets (or possibly phones, at the rate things are going). Trauerfeier: Apple gedenkt Steve Jobs
Das Unternehmen aus Cupertino hat sich am gestrigen Mittwoch gebührend von seinem Firmengründer Steve Jobs verabschiedet. Tausende Mitarbeiter des erfolgreichen IT-Konzerns fanden sich auf dem Hauptquartier in Kalifornien zusammen, um eine firmeninterne Trauerfeier abzuhalten. iPhone, iPad still reign in enterprise world, study claims
Apple remains extremely influential in terms of enterprise smartphone and tablet adoption, a new Good Technology study suggests. In the recently-ended September quarter, the iPhone alone is said to have represented 61 percent of all non-BlackBerry enterprise smartphone activations. Dear Aunt TUAW: Help me use punctuation with Siri
Dear Aunt TUAW,
I've had an iPhone 4S since Friday and I love how Siri is making my life easier, and hands-free. However, what's troubling me is that when I use Siri to send or reply to my friend using SMS, I can't figure out how to add commas and periods.
This makes the message looks odd, and Siri doesn't allow direct editing on the message either (at least I haven't found out).
Is there a way to add punctuations while sending a message using Siri?

Expanded California Apple Store to open Saturday
Apple is poised to expand its presence in California by re-opening the Victoria Gardens Store in Rancho Cucamonga this weekend. The Victoria Gardens store originally opened in October 2004 and was impressive for its time. It had 3,000 square feet of retail space and was packed full of G5 Towers, G5 iMacs, and eMacs when it first opened its doors seven years ago.
Now the store has a new location and has received an architectural facelift. The new and improved store has doubled its footprint and now boasts of 6,000 square feet of retail space. AT&T: iPhone 3GS sees sellouts, more new subs than rivals

Nokia sees unusual boost, still down to third in smartphones
Nokia saw a bounce back in its summer results that still saw it lose its position as the top smartphone maker. It reduced its losses to $97.7 million based on a sudden rush of basic feature phones, which at 89.8 million were up eight percent from a year ago but a much larger 25 percent from just the spring. The company didn't directly explain the spike but saw its average phone price drop from $85 to $70 as the very lowest end phones offset smartphones.

Samsung reportedly beats Apple in smartphone shipments
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Samsung shipped more smartphones than Apple in the last quarter ending September 30. According to a person "familiar with the situation," Samsung shipped 20 million smartphones where as Apple shipped 17.1 million in its fourth fiscal quarter, which ended September 24, as announced in Apple's last conference earnings call.

AT&T's profits are down, but the carrier is still smiling
There's good news and bad news in AT&T's third quarter report. The carrier's profit dropped to $3.6 billion for the quarter -- that's down from $12.32 billion from this time last year. Toshiba preps super-dense 6.1-inch, 2560x1600 mobile LCD
Toshiba Mobile Display on Thursday showed a possible record-setting 6.1-inch LCD likely destined for tablets and possibly more mobile devices. Despite its size, it has the same 2560x1600 resolution as older 30-inch displays, giving it an extremely high density of 498 pixels per inch. OCZ pushes access-time boundaries with Octane and Octane-S2 SSDs
OCZ Technology's pushing SSDs on step further this morning, with the introduction of the Octane SATA 6Gbps and Octane-S2 SATA 3Gbps SSDs. AT&T activates 2.7m iPhones in summer ahead of iPhone 4S
AT&T posted results for this summer that showed it as one of the most significantly hurt by the wait for the iPhone 4S. It activated 2.7 million iPhones over the period, down almost a million over 3.6 million in the spring. The iPhone still dominated AT&T's sales at over 56 percent of the 4.8 million that had traded hands, although this was down slightly from 60 percent.

Samsung will have temporarily outsold Apple to become the top smartphone maker over the summer, a corporate insider leaked on Thursday. Daily iPhone App: Magic Defenders
Magic Defenders isn't new, but it has claimed a lot of my iPhone gaming time lately. It's a tower defense game, so if you like that genre, odds are that you'll like this one.
Instead of building towers, you play the game as a mage that's casting spells against waves of attackers. The game cycle has you casting spells using mana, killing attackers to earn XP, and then using that XP to upgrade your spells to kill attackers more quickly, earning more XP, and so on. It's a lot of fun and considering that the game has a few different heroes to play through and level up across three invasion episodes, there's plenty of content to explore. Blazing down enemies is very rewarding, as is learning how the various spells work together.

Skobbler updates its $0.99 nav app with mixed results

Beats Audio wird auch in Zukunft eine Rolle Spielen in Smartphones von HTC, man hat die Firma nicht umonst mehrheitlich übernommen. Knackpunkt jedoch bislang: Der Klangverbesserer werkelt nur in HTCs eigener Musik-App, Drittanbieter bleiben draußen, das mussten wir selbst feststellen. Doch es ist Abhilfe in Sicht: HTC will eine entsprechende API bereitstellen, damit Entwickler den Bassbooster in ihre eigenen Apps integrieren können. Nokia Q3 2011 earnings: operating profit sinks 60 percent, but sales beat estimates
Man, can Nokia World get here any faster? Nokia needs Windows Phone in perhaps the worst possible way, and if you had any doubt whatsoever on that, just take a look at the outfit's woeful Q3 2011 earnings. Right off the top, net sales dropped 13 percent year-over-year (and three percent from Q2), while operating profit plummeted a staggering 60 percent year-over-year (and 36 percent since the prior quarter). All told, the company recording net sales of €9 billion ($12.35 billion), and while things are gloomy in comparison to the glory days, it still has a whopping €5.1 billion ($7 billion) in its coffers.

Pile of Arduinos hooked up in Rube Goldeberg-esque chain reaction (video)
All right, so technically this isn't a Rube Goldberg machine (it doesn't actually perform a task, merely loops endlessly), but the spirit is the same. Publishers: Apple's iOS 5 Newsstand is a huge hit
Publishers who jumped on board with Apple's Newsstand feature in iOS 5 are seeing big payoffs, with "sampler" issues experiencing a massive spike and sales jumping strongly forward as well. Exact Editions saw their sampler apps downloaded 14 times more often after Newsstand launched compared with how they were doing in the iBookStore before, and sales have doubled "across the board" according to co-founder Adam Hodgkin.

Apple re-releases Apple TV 4.4.1 bugfix update
Apple has again released an update for the firmware of its Apple TV device, re-releasing v4.4.1, which was pulled on Monday after users reported serious problems with their devices after installing the update. The new version has fixed the issue, and now does what the original v4.4.1 was supposed to do -- resolve an issue present in v4.4 that caused some Apple TVs to be connected to iTunes in order to update.

Google+ to boost features, add pseudonyms soon
Social networking service Google+ will be adding several much-requested new features by the end of the year, starting with the ability to integrate an existing Google Apps account into the service. Senior Vice President of Engineering Vic Gundotra and Google Co-Founder Sergey Brin explained that the rapid growth of the service, now at 40 million, had exceeded expectations with regards to their feature-rollout timetable, but the company was catching up to users' demands.

Dragon adds Recorder app for time-shifted desktop dictation
It's all about speech on the iPhone 4S, from the systemwide dictation features to the inscrutable but very helpful Siri assistant. Foxconn may set up general touchscreen plant in Brazil
Foxconn's Brazilian iPad manufacturing might also include a general touchscreen panel line. Inside rumors late Wednesday from Digitimes had it establishing a supply chain which, combined with the iPad plant, would crest a value of $12 billion. ASUS preps quad-core Transformer Prime, Padfone for 2012
ASUS CEO Jonney Shih took the stage at the AsiaD conference to tease the Transformer Prime, its sequel to its relatively hot-selling Eee Pad Transformer tablet. The 10-inch slate should be the first major tablet, if not tablet of any kind, to ship with NVIDIA's Tegra 3. Apple, Samsung talk parts deals until 2014
Samsung COO Lee Jae-yong's visit to Steve Jobs' memorial led to the rumored talks with Apple, the Korean executive said Wednesday. Along with a deal through at least 2012, he and Apple CEO Tim Cook discussed deals for 2013 and 2014 for "even better parts," he told the Korea Herald. eFun Nextbook Premium 9 tablet hands-on (video)
It seems like only yesterday that eFun was talking up its Nextbook Premium8 tablet (okay it was two weeks ago), but the company is already pitching the latest entry in the line. The Nextbook Premium9 has a nine-inch display, in keeping with the Southern California company's fairly straight-forward naming convention. The slate runs a basic version of Android 2.3 (though the company assures us that a Honeycomb upgrade is on the way) and packs in 4GB of memory (expandable via a MicroSD slot), a built-in speaker, a two megapixel front-facing camera and, as a bit of a throwback, a mini USB port.

Digg founder Kevin Rose unveils Oink rating service
Digg.com founder Kevin Rose has demonstrated a forthcoming iPhone app called Oink, expected to be released shortly, that up-ends the model for finding out about local businesses by using crowd-sourced ratings of "things" and geo-location to develop the shortest possible answer to the question "where is the best (whatever) near me?" Android Ice Cream Sandwich: What will it look like on a tablet? (video)
Is there such a thing as too much Ice Cream Sandwich? We didn't think so either, and booted up Google's own Android Emulator to play around with version four-point-oh -- in tablet proportions. We don't know whether manufacturers will end up slathering their own interpretation of Ice Cream Sandwich on top of the vanilla original, but this is probably very close to what we'll be dealing with when arrives on tablets sometime this quarter. IHS: iPhone 4S costs same $188 in parts as old iPhone 4
A new cost breakdown by IHS iSuppli has given more definitive raw parts costs for the iPhone 4S. A 16GB version of the phone is estimated to cost about $188, or within 50 cents of last year's model when it was new. The switch from an Infineon (now part of Intel) chip to the dual-mode Qualcomm chip had little impact on the cellular chipset, which in total cost about $14 to $15.

Early Edition 2 rebuilt, offers Google Reader sync, UI changes, more
When the original iPad was released last April, Glasshouse Apps released The Early Edition, one of the first styled RSS readers for the device. Much like Flipboard and some others, The Early Edition gathered your feeds into a self-curated "magazine." It was nice, but The Early Edition 2 (TEE2) is a huge improvement.

You knew Lytro was up to something, but with its infinite focus light-field powered camera out of the bag, how does it actually stack up in real life? In a word: novel -- you certainly won't be tossing your regular camera for this shooter, at least not in its current incarnation. iZON webcam and iPhone catch a thief in the act
At the end of August, we ran a review of the Stem Innovations iZON Remote Room Monitor. It's a sleek little Wi-Fi webcam that looks like it was designed in Cupertino, and includes an iOS app for setup and monitoring of the device. The iZON can be triggered by motion in a room, and then send video up to a private YouTube account for you to view. That iZON feature was recently used by a woman from Boynton Beach, Florida to catch a burglar (a neighbor) who was stealing her medication.

Jobs biographer Isaacson to appear on 60 Minutes Sunday
The production team at the venerable TV newsmagazine show "60 Minutes" have posted a tweet revealing that Walter Isaacson, the historian and biographer who has written Jobs' authorized account of his life, will be on the show Sunday night to discuss the book, simply entitled Steve Jobs, and the man behind it. Google music store may be limited to indies, song gifting
Google's tentative music store plans may be launched with just a fraction of the music that Apple and Amazon have, music insiders divulged on Wednesday. In continuing its deadlock with majors, the search firm was reported by CNET as being willing to limit its music catalog to just independent labels.
