Google's Street View takes to the rails in Switzerland
Google's Street View has made its way around the world and gone off the beaten path in a few places, but until now it hasn't hitched a ride to capture some scenery by rail. That picturesque view above comes from a section of the Albula / Bernina railway in Switzerland -- a UNESCO World Heritage site -- all 122 kilometers of which were recently mapped out and photographed by Google using its usual Street View camera gear. C-Spire to become 4th U.S. iPhone 4S carrier
You would think the fourth U.S. iPhone 4S carrier would be T-Mobile. But, because of network incompatibility, it's not. It's actually C Spire Wireless, formerly known as Cellular South, a CDMA regional carrier that most people probably haven't heard of unless you happen to live in Mississippi or parts of Alabama, Florida and Tennessee.
It's not surprising that Apple is starting to push the iPhone toward regional carriers now that the exclusive deal with AT&T is a distant memory. As stated during Tuesday's earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said he wanted to get the iPhone 4

TUAW TV Live NOW: Understudy Week!
It's another understudy episode this week on TUAW TV Live, since Steve is currently playing nurse to the recently operated upon Mrs. Steve. This means if you didn't get enough of the Doc Rock and Kelly show on the Talkcast Sunday, now's your chance to stock up.
We'll be discussing the news of the week, and since it's Kelly and Doc Rock, we will also veer wildly off topic. I know we don't have a topic, but we'll find one so we can make sure we get off it. I also have it on excellent authority that to ease this transition, at least one host will be wearing a hat.

Review: Taylor Technologies Smart Stand Sleeve for iPad + iPad 2
Here’s the only problem: the magnets in the open end can accidentally turn on the iPad 2, which could lead to unintended battery drain. At first we weren’t too worried about this flaw; we thought the chances of it happening often were pretty low. In our testing, however, it turned out to be a pretty common problem, and happened regardless of the direction the iPad 2 was inserted. Of course owners of the original iPad won’t experience…

Apple confirms GLONASS support for iPhone 4S
Apple has updated its US iPhone 4S tech specs page to say that the new devices supports GLONASS positioning systems. GLONASS stand for Global Navigation Satellite System and is the Russian version of GPS that was developed in the 1990s. According to Wikipedia, the GLONASS system fell into disrepair in the 90s as the Russian economy sank, but in the last decade the system has come back with Russia launching its 24th satellite last year, giving GLONASS coverage to every inch of Russian territory.
Before GLONASS, the iPhone only supported assisted GPS. There's no word from Apple yet if the iPhone 4S will take advantage of both systems simultaneousl

Steve reportedly worked on Apple's next product until his last day
A new interview with the CEO of Softbank, Masayoshi Son, seems to indicate that Steve Jobs did indeed work on Apple products right up until his last day of life. While talking to the US Ambassador to Japan, Son said that during a meeting on the day of the iPhone 4S announcement, he was speaking with Apple CEO Tim Cook, who apologized because he had to excuse himself. "Oh Masa, sorry I have to quit our meeting," Cook reportedly said. "He said, 'My boss is calling me,'" claims Son. Cook also said Jobs was calling specifically because he wanted to talk about the company's next product, which we haven't yet heard about.
PC Magazine speculates that product was the iPhone 5, but whatever it happens to be, it appears Jobs was

Similar keyloggers have already been developed using microphones, which sample vibrations far more frequently than accelerometers. However, nearly all phone operating systems ask a user's permission before granting applications access to

OSX/Flashback.C disables the auto-updater component of XProtect, which means the system's built-in anti-malware application no longer looks for updates to its malware definitions. This essentially holds the door open for future malware to invade the system unimpeded.

Sprint unleashes the HTC EVO Design 4G, available October 23rd for $100
That HTC EVO Design 4G leaked a couple months ago? Oh, it's real -- and Sprint's finally ready to share its story with the world. The tale of the EVO Design 4G is simple enough: for a penny under $100, you can have a WiMAX-capable device with GSM roaming that features a 4-inch qHD (960 x 540) display, 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 CPU, Android 2.3 with HTC Sense UI, Mobile Hotspot, a 5MP rear camera with HD video recording (720p, we presume) and a 1.3MP front-facing cam. In summary, the Design 4G is basically the

Analysts characterize Apple Q4 as 'miss' linked to iPhone
Apple's fourth-quarter results were somewhat disappointing, analysts suggest. Sterne Agee's Shaw Wu labels the quarter a "miss" not because the company didn't do well as a whole, but rather because most analysts were expecting higher iPhone shipments. Wu notes that he was anticipating about 18.5 million units, while Wall Street consensus was 20 million, and some analysts were calling for as much as 23 million. In reality Apple shipped approximately 17.07 million phones.

Audyssey Lower East Side Audio Dock Air brings AirPlay
Audyssey took its high-end iOS audio wireless Wednesday through the Lower East Side Audio Dock Air. The monolithic design borrows the same unusually bass-rich technology from the South of Market speakers and adds AirPlay for iPads, iPhones, iPods, and iTunes-equipped computers to share their audio over Wi-Fi. Controls are kept to a minimum on the device itself, which relies on a passive bass radiator, two mid-range drivers, and two tweeters to produce a sound that's theoretically balanced and deep without using a subwoofer.

Poop Scoop: Botkumpel PR2 sammelt Scheißhaufen ein
Filed under: Haushaltsbots

China will „Steve Jobs Armee“ züchten

Put a whiteboard on your laptop with DrawTop
I love this idea. The DrawTop is a sticker that goes on top of your laptop and basically turns it into a whiteboard surface. The one, ahem, drawback that I can see is you might pretty easily wipe off any designs you happen to have on it just by sliding your laptop into the usual protective case or holder, so the company's suggestion to use it as a makeshift notebook or reminder board probably won't work all that well.
Nevertheless, I can still see some good uses for this, like putting information on the back of your laptop at a conference or convention, or using it as a quick and portable collaborative sketch surface. The DrawTop itself is $10 for one or $14 for two, and it even comes with markers and stick-on accessories. Sure, you'll be covering up th

Google confirms Nexus S will get Ice Cream Sandwich -- for real this time (Gingerbread devices, too)
Okay, so we've already seen Ice Cream Sandwich running on the Nexus S, but that was decidedly unofficial. We've just heard straight from Google's Gabe Cohen that the Nexus S will definitely be getting ICS. In fact, both he and Matias Duarte think most Gingerbread devices will see an upgrade, saying: "Currently in the process for releasing Ice Cream Sandwich for Nexus S. Theoretically should work for any 2.3 device." It's hardly a surprise and there's no specific word on timing just yet, but hopefully it won't take long to move that vanilla Android device up to something with a breaded exterior.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus vs. Galaxy S II, Nexus One and Nexus S (macro hands-on)
Guess who posed for a family gathering here in Hong Kong? From left to right, we've got the Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S II, Nexus One and Nexus S. The panels on all of these guys are stunning, but we're finding it mighty difficult to choose a favorite between the Galaxy Nexus and the GSII. Have a look at some close-ups in the gallery below, and a typical home video just after the break. Gallery:

ARM and TSMC tape out first 20nm Cortex-A15 chips
ARM and its frequent hardware partner TSMC said they had managed the first tape out, or working production samples, of the Cortex-A15 processor. The chip runs on a very dense 20 nanometer process and was produced just half a year after the basic design was ready. All the factory tools were those that could be found in an actual factory, the two said.

Report: iOS 5 installed on 1 in 3 compatible devices
Well, that was quick: Analytics firm Localytics says that iOS 5 is already installed on one of every three eligible devices, meaning that just a week or so after release, it's already set up and running on a big chunk of the ecosystem. Even taking the iPhone 4S out of the equation (which of course comes with iOS 5 installed), the number's still up to 31%, which is a pretty solid install base put together so quickly.
As you can see from the chart above, the iPad 2 actually has the highest rate of install, according to the data Localytics is looking at. Makes sense that both the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4 would be up there, as those are likely Apple's most devoted users, dedicated to keeping

Apple releases Apple TV update 4.4.1
Last week, Apple update the Apple TV to version 4.4, adding the long-awaited AirPlay mirroring features. Now it has rolled out an incremental version (4.4.1) that adds some minor bug fixes and tweaks. This 4.4.1 version was initially released today, October 18, and then pulled after reports of bricked Apple TV units surfaced. The problem with this update was fixed and Apple has made it publicly available again.
This 4.4.1 version may be small, but it builds on the 4.4 firmware update which added several new features to the Apple TV. With 4.4, you can use AirPlay mirroring with your iPad 2 and iPhone 4S and view PhotoStream content that's stored in iCloud.

Google announces NFC-based Android Beam for sharing between phones
Google's already embraced NFC for mobile payments, and it's now ready to do some sharing as well. That comes in the form of Android Beam, just announced at the company's joint event with Samsung in Hong Kong. Much like HP's ill-fated Touch-to-share, it will let you tap two devices together to share a piece of information. That will work across a range of services, includign YouTube videos, people cards, maps, web pages and even links to apps in the Andriod Market. What's more, Google also announced that the SDK is available today -- get it at the source link below.

Roboto font and the new design philosophy of Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich
When it came time to talk Ice Cream Sandwich, Matias Duarte started the conversation (or is it lecture?) with a bit about Roboto. At its most basic, Roboto is a font -- the new face of Android in a post Honeycomb world where tablets and phones share the same software space. Sure, it may seem like just another rounded, clean sans serif typeface, but it's really an entire aesthetic that Duarte says has guided the design philosophy of Android 4.0. It's "modern, yet approachable" and "emotional," in PR speak at least. But the clean, geometric design

Android Ice Cream Sandwich adds Face Unlock feature
There's no shortage of new features in Ice Cream Sandwich, but one sure to attract a lot of attention is Face Unlock. That, as you can probably surmise, lets you unlock your phone through facial recognition instead of a password -- hardly a new idea, but a first for Google. Unfortunately, the demo didn't go quite as planned during the keynote -- locking out Google's Matias Durate -- but we'll be sure to give it a go ourselves and report back.

Galaxy Nexus official, brings Android 4.0 in November
Google and Samsung at their joint Hong Kong event unveiled the Galaxy Nexus. The new flagship is the first Android 4.0 phone and is a showcase for the platform: it drops physical navigation buttons in favor of all touch and borrows the visual multitasking as well as other elements. Google+ is now built into a Windows Phone-like People Hub, and the NFC inside can now be used to share data between phones through Android Beam.

Apple wins patent over integrated IPS touchscreen
Apple has finally been awarded a patent for a system of integrating a touch-screen panel directly into an IPS (in-plane switching) display, as found on the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S -- which it first applied for in 2007, shortly after the announcement of the first iPhone. The method is considered to be both superior and more cost-effective in comparison to the usual method of overlaying a touch-screen layer or panel on top of a display panel.

Apple posts record Mac quarter despite some iPad cannibalization
Along with the iPad, Mac sales were one of the highlights of Apple's quarterly earnings report. In the quarter that just ended, Apple sold 4.89 million Macs, a 26 percent increase over the year-ago quarter.
Apple CEO Tim Cook was pleased about the Mac performance, but in response to an analyst question he did confirm that some customers are buying the iPad instead of the Mac. It's inexpensive and easy to use, two features that appeal to the average consumer.
But Apple's computers are not as hard-hit by iPad cannibalization as the PC market. Cook suggested today, as he has in the past

Siri is the iPhone 4S' most enticing feature

And that makes sense -- not only is Siri flashy and new (and available only on the iPhone 4S, for now), but it's pretty much the marquee feature for the device according to Apple's marketing.

An animated history of the iPhone
CNET UK's Drew Stearne created the video below, a dynamic animation that shows the history of the iPhone. It shows quite clearly how the iPhone came about not as something fully formed from the void but as a consolidation and refinement of existing technologies, many of which have been around for decades. Stearne created the video as a tribute to Steve Jobs.
The video is embedded below. Note that parts of it are very information-dense, so you might have to freeze-frame some parts of it if you want to grasp all the little factoids that fly past in less than four minutes. Aside from that, it's a great video that perfectly encapsulates the iPhone's long history -- a history that began not in 2007, but long before many of us were even born.
