Apple Q4 breakdown shows Asia-Pacific, iPad as strong suits
As a part of announcing its fourth-quarter financial results, Apple has released a detailed breakdown (PDF) of where the money came from. Regionally the Americas continued to be Apple's greatest source of revenue, generating $9.648 billion, up 34 percent year-over-year. Europe was up 36 percent to $7.397 billion however, and the Asia-Pacific region -- which includes China -- jumped 139 percent to $6.530 billion.

Apple announces $28.27 billion in Q4 2011 revenue
Apple today revealed the results for its fiscal fourth quarter, which ended on September 24th. The company generated $28.27 billion in revenue, generating a net profit of $6.62 billion, or $7.05 per diluted share. The company contrasts the figures with Q4 2010, when it pulled in $20.34 billion with a profit of $4.31 billion, or $4.64 per share. Apple reports Q4 2011 earnings
After the market close today, Apple reported financial results for its fiscal fourth quarter, meeting the targets of some Wall Street analysts but falling well below the expectations of the usually spot-on amateur analyst crowd. The company reported revenues of $28.27 billion, up almost $7 billion from the year-ago quarter. Earnings per share came in at $7.05. Gross margin was 40.3 percent, versus 36.9 percent in the year-ago quarter. The results represent the best-ever September quarter for Apple.

Apple's earnings for Q4 2011 are out, and the company has fallen short of expectations. It still managed to rake in $28.27 billion during the quarter, which is up from $20.3 billion in Q3 2010, but quite a bit short of the $29.69 billion analysts were counting on -- net profits came in at $6.62 billion. The company also announced that 17.07 million iPhones during the quarter (a 21 percent jump from a year ago), along with 11.12 million iPads (a whopping 166 percent increase year-over-year), 4.89 million Macs, and 6.62 million iPods (once again the one area that continues to decline, now down 27 percent from a year ago).

Sprint denies iPhone 4S hampering network
The iPhone 4S is not having a serious impact on Sprint's 3G data speeds, the carrier claims. Since Friday's 4S launch some Sprint subscribers have complained of lethargic 3G, potentially as slow as 300 to 500Kbps down. The issue appears to be affecting all phones, not just the 4S, but the popularity of the iPhone combined with a sudden influx of new customers could be sapping Sprint's bandwidth.

Twitter CEO calls Apple a "corporate mentor"
Speaking onstage at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco Monday evening, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said that Apple was a corporate mentor to the company.

Ultra HDTV technical standards agreed on, more pixels is a good thing
The high-definition pride of your living room may not want to hear it, but it looks like ultra high-definition TV (or UHDTV) has now taken another step towards reality. While shop-floor products remain years away, experts in the ITU Study Group on Broadcasting Service have made several agreements on technical standards for your (next?) next TV purchase. Increasing pixel count in future sets is also expected to improve viewing angles on glasses-free 3D, which needs more dots to work its lenticular magic. 33 megapixels sounds like it should be enough to work with.

Dell: Apple quote was 'misstated,' touch to lead our PCs
Dell's namesake CEO Michael Dell at the Web 2.0 Summit touched on his infamous quote from 1997 where he had said he in Steve Jobs' position would have closed Apple and given money back to shareholders. iOS 5: Notification-Center anstatt Icon-Badgets – Der Umstieg
Das neue Notification-Center ist eine enorme Erleichterung um einen Überblick über sein Tagesgeschehen zu behalten. Die Verwaltung ist ziemlich simpel: Alle auf dem iOs-Gerät installierten Apps landen im zentralen Einstellungsmenü, und so kann man, App für App, durchgehen und einstellen, ob man für diese und jene Applikation Benachrichtigungen erhalten will oder nicht.
Ich schreibe diesen Artikel deshalb, weil viele Anwender wohl noch beide Notifikationen anzeigen lassen: Diese im Notification-Center, und die Icon-Badgets an jeder App, die z.B. die Anzahl der erhaltenen E-Mails signalisieren.

Sears to give iPads, iPods to employees in 450 stores
Sears will soon outfit its employees in 450 stores with iPads and iPod touch devices. Sears sales associates will use the devices to help customers find product information, check inventory, and make purchases without having to be tethered to a cash register. Sears will also offer free Wi-Fi to customers so they can use their own smartphone devices in the store.

Motorola Droid RAZR hits FCC with Verizon LTE, global GSM radio
Surprisingly, Motorola seems to have been taken a page out of Apple's book, as the Droid RAZR was curiously approved by the FCC almost immediately after it was announced. And there's some good stuff to behold in here, too; in addition to the usual Verizon-friendly LTE Band 13 radio with CDMA 800 / 1900 support, we also found instances of GSM and WCDMA. In fact, we discovered that the 850 / 1900 bands were tested -- even though they're locked from being used by US operators. Hands-on with the Motorola Droid RAZR's (many) accessories (video)
It wouldn't be a Motorola event without a glut of accessories, and boy howdy did the company deliver on that front. Sure, the Droid RAZR may not actually be out yet, but when it does hit, the handset will have plenty of things to hold it, dock it, charge it and stream stuff from it. In fact, Motorola devoted a full room to the things at today's event. First and foremost are two additions to the Lapdock family. The docking station comes in new flavors: the Lapdock 500 ($300) and the Lapdock 100 ($200), measuring 14 and 10.1 inches, respectively.

HTC buys kids' app maker Inquisitive Minds
HTC made another in a string of company buyouts Tuesday as it acquired Zoodles maker Inquisitive Minds for $13 million. The deal will get it the creator of a child-oriented front end for smartphones and tablets that both lets parents manage the enviroment, such as blocking ads or setting play times, as well as giving them a central place for books, drawing, games, and videos. HTC noted that there were about two million users, although it didn't say what would happen to Zoodles after the deal.

Briefly: Fan film uses iPhone 4 camera, DraftSight update
Dark Resurrection: Volume 0, a fan-made science fiction movie based around the Star Wars universe, used the iPhone 4 as part of the post-production phase. The models of spaceships and environments were all photographed with the iPhone 4, which returned an optimal size and kept all of the models in focus. The device was also used to overdub a number of the actors in their homes, helping the producers to reduce the films budget. The 40-minute film can be viewed on YouTube in its native Italian with English subtitles.

Motorola Motoactv hands-on
So when Motorola teased its "faster, thinner, smarter, stronger" event we were pretty sure that was a not-so-subtle reference to the 7mm-thick Droid RAZR. As it turns out, the company was also being quite literal. The wearable player is a direct corollary to the iPod nano and can be either clipped or worn on the wrist. Motorola Droid RAZR hands-on (video)
To everyone who rocked a Motorola RAZR in the '00s, it's time to get excited again. The line -- or at least the name -- has been reborn, and not without good reason. This is a thin device -- extremely thin. The Droid RAZR by Motorola is 7.1mm thin, in fact, and holding it up next to the iPhone 4 makes Apple's phone look downright beefy by comparison. At 127 grams, it's also incredibly light, a fact that's quite apparent the first time you hold thing -- we were honestly a bit surprised when it was first dropped in our hands. The company has clearly come a long way from the first generation Droid.

Reminder: Apple fourth quarter FY11 earnings announcement today
After the market close today (4pm Eastern), Apple will announce quarterly earnings for its 2011 fiscal fourth quarter. Apple's fiscal year ended on September 25 (roughly aligned with the US federal government's fiscal year), which means that the all-important upcoming holiday quarter is actually Apple's Q1 of 2012.

Motorola Droid RAZR official: 7.1mm, Super AMOLED
Motorola ended rumors and unveiled the Droid RAZR. The device aims to leap over the typically bulky limits of 4G phones: its use of a Kevlar back and a stainless steel frame help it measure 7.1mm thick at most points, thinner than even a Galaxy S II, while still being strong enough to survive common abuse, including splashes. Battery life also doesn't take the typical hit: Motorola expects 12.5 hours of calling and 8.9 hours of video.

Motorola announces Motoactv, 'the ultimate fitness device'
It's official, Motorola's just officially unveiled Motoactv, its very own music and fitness device. The little running mate sports a 600MHz processor, runs Android and weighs a healthy 35 grams. It'll apparently track your heart rate, and log running, walking and cycling statistics, and packs GPS to track your exercise routes. The Nike+ competitor is unsurprisingly sweat and waterproof and can hold up to 4,000 songs. It also offers FM radio and audio "coaching," which updates on pace and distance, for those who need a little inspiration in their routine. Moto's also outing a pair of accompanying Bluetooth headsets, the SF700 and SF500.

Apple may have missed internal goals for Q4 iPad shipments
Apple "did not meet its forecast" for iPad shipments in its fourth fiscal quarter, a Digitimes report claims. In all Apple is said to have shipped 13 million units, representing a sequential growth of 36.8 percent. While better than the tablet market as a whole, which hit 18.7 million units (including iPads) with a sequential growth of 27.5 percent, both figures pale next to the 60.9 percent the market hit in the June quarter.

It may not have resulted in much of a numerical bump, but the just-released webOS 3.0.4 software update for the HP TouchPad is a fairly significant one. Canon adds three budget printers with cloud printing
Canon U.S.A. has announced three new PIXMA printers, MG4120 Wireless Photo All-In-One (AIO), MG3120 Wireless Photo All-In-One, and the MG2120 Photo All-In-One printers. The MG4120 and MG3120 use 802.11n Wi-Fi for networking, while the MG2120 uses a USB connection. All three printers use Canon's ChromaLife 100 ink system, which uses one black and one color cartridge. Apparent's Doxie Go portable scanner syncs to iOS
Apparent planned to step up portable scanning on Tuesday with the Doxie Go. The small, 600DPI reader takes a different approach with its own storage and syncs like a camera, uploading its results over USB if it's talking directly to a computer. It also has a unique option of syncing to iOS devices: an optional Sync kit add-on pushes scans directly to the Camera Roll on one of Apple's devices, which in turn can sync with iCloud.

Samsung supposedly uses screenshot of Apple Maps app in promo
Samsung goofed when it included a modified screenshot of the iOS maps application (above right) in one of its promotional pieces. The promotion shows a Samsung Android handset with Google Maps that unfortunately is not the Android version. It has a rounded text entry box and teardrop push pins that are found in an older version of iOS maps. Apple TV 4.4.1 update fixes dependence on iTunes
Apple has released an update for the second-generation Apple TV, bringing the set-top's firmware up to v4.4.1. Unlike the v4.4 release, the new code only implements bugfixes. Specifically Apple notes that it solves a problem which forced some Apple TVs to be connected to iTunes in order to download v4.4.

AUO, LG rumored sending 7.9in 'iPad mini' samples to Apple
A rumored small iPad might have manifested itself if a purported leak is accurate. Both AU Optronics and LG Display were said by Taiwan's Economic Daily News to be sending Apple samples of a 7.85-inch touchscreen with the same 1024x768 resolution as the current, 9.7-inch iPad. Levitating superconductor floats within a magnetic field so you don't have to (video)
What happens when you douse a superconducting urinal cake with liquid nitrogen? We haven't given it too much thought, to be honest, though we're guessing it would look a lot like the "levitating" disc pictured above. Developed by researchers at Tel-Aviv University, this device is actually a superconductor hovering over a "supercooled" magnet. While locked within the magnetic field, it can rotate around a vertical axis, turn upside down or do laps around a track -- all thanks to a phenomenon that Tel-Aviv's physicists call "quantum trapping." Briefly: Fan-film features iPhone 4 camera, DraftSite update
Dark Resurrection: Volume 0, a fan-made science fiction movie based around the Star Wars universe, used the iPhone 4 as part of the post-production phase. The models of spaceships and environments were all photographed with the iPhone 4, which returned an optimal size and kept all of the models in focus. The device was also used to overdub a number of the actors in their homes, helping the producers to reduce the films budget. The 40-minute film can be viewed on YouTube in its native Italian with English subtitles.

FDA drafts Mobile Medical Applications document
There are all manner of medically-based uses for iOS devices (the iPad in particular) if you are a medical professional, so it was just a question of time before patients themselves got in on the act (brace yourself, we get all bureaucratic up ahead). According to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the FDA has drafted a document titled Guidance for Industry and Food and Drug Administration Staff - Mobile Medical Applications which is a first pass at attempting some standardization and looking at regulating the data and communication requirements of apps like this (for example, having a glucose monitor that can sync readings to your iOS device).

Daily iPhone App: Any To Do
We're looking at apps that aren't games this week, and today's selection is Any To Do. It's a little pricey, but might be worth it for the right user. I use the excellent 2Do on my iPad, but Any To Do is nice as well.
While it lacks a little bit of the syntactic sugar that 2Do has, it does use a very interesting quadrant view. Basically, your tasks are charted as Urgent, Important or not Urgent or Important. You can see a view of all of your tasks laid out according to those criteria. Most to-do apps chart tasks by date due or time entered, but I do like how Any To Do lays them out, so at a glance, you can see tasks that need to get done right away, or that take preced

UK sets analog TV cutoff for October 2012, finally sees a show after US viewers
It's not that we're upset UK viewers get to watch series like Luther, Misfits and Bedlam long before they officially air here (or in the case of Doctor Who, hours), but we are finally glad to know how a story ends before they do. MS develops sensor for through-fabric touch input
Researchers at Microsoft have come up with a prototype sensor that can be attached to the back of a smartphone that can detect touch -- even multi-touch gestures -- through fabrics, even heavy fabrics like fleece. The invention, once refined, could allow users to dismiss calls without removing a device from their pocket, and could even be trained to perform simple actions or reply to texts without looking at the device, reports GeekWire.

Microsoft bringing enterprise BI apps to iOS, Android
During the company's SQL PASS Summit this week, Microsoft revealed that it plans to make its existing corporate business intelligence (BI) web-based solutions -- which includes Excel Services, PerformancePoint and SQL Server Reporting Services -- available to iOS and Android browsers as well as its own Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows 8 devices. Sears gives iOS devices to employees, Wi-Fi to shoppers

Samsung caught lifting iPhone screen for Galaxy Player shot
Samsung just as it shipped the Galaxy Player 4 and 5 to US stores was caught using an iPhone screen cap on its Galaxy Player 5 page. An image supposed to be describing Android mobile services uses the Android navigation bar but a Maps screen from a post at BlogHer from 2008. If you like Infinity Blade on your iPhone or iPad, then you'll probably love Infinity Blade FX. More efficient heat sinks could sport nanowire whiskers
Sintering is a common process for creating copper heat sinks that involves packing powdered metals into a particular shape and baking it in a vacuum. Localytics: iOS 5 already on a third of ready devices
A third of every supporting iOS device is already using iOS 5, Localytics said Monday. Although less than a week old, adoption is up to 33, 35, and 36 percent for the original iPad, iPhone 4, and iPad 2 respectively. iPhone 3GS users have been relatively quick to upgrade despite the hardware's age at 27 percent; iPod touch owners were the most reluctant at 23 percent and 17 percent each.

Am vergangenem Sonntag fand die Trauerfeier zu Ehren des kürzlich verstorbenen Mitbegründers von Apple in der Kirche der Universität von Stanford statt. Siri and the possibility of artificial intelligence
Wired does a little speculating over on the Cloudline blog about whether or not Apple's redesigned Siri service actually counts as an AI. Technically, no, Siri's not a real artificial intelligence. When you ask "her" something and she comes back with a witty answer, your iPhone doesn't actually "understand" what you said in any meaningful way -- it's just identifying a set of words that you put together, and then outputting some data based on those words. Microsoft late Sunday kicked off a new TV ad campaign that for the first time portrayed its lineup as a cohesive family. The lead ad (below), "Epic Share," shows a daughter using a Windows Phone to capture her father playing Dance Central 2 on an Xbox 360 with a Kinect, share it with a Windows 7 PC, and edit with her brother in Windows Movie Maker before it goes live on the web. Mac 101: Disable automatic uploads to Photo Stream
It seems as though Apple is designing a lot of new Mac and iOS features from the perspective of people whose internet access is the equivalent of an all-you-can-eat buffet. Photo Stream is a perfect example. The feature, built into Apple's new iCloud service, automatically uploads photos taken on any of your devices to iCloud, which gives you near-instant access to them on all of your devices.
It's a great feature, and it's already streamlined the process of getting photos from my iPhone onto my iPad and Mac. But it was only this morning that I realized with grim horror what might happen if I imported 8 GB of RAW files from my DSLR into Aperture. With Photo Stream's default setting
