BBM caught cheating with Android, CrackBerry epidemic to spread?
RIM's killer BlackBerry feature has always been BBM. So, you'll have to excuse us if we give some side-eye to these leaked shots of the private messaging service two-timing its Canadian maker. Kantar: iPhone, AT&T users the most loyal in US
Despite perceptions, iPhone owners have been some of the most loyal in the US, Kantar Worldpanel ComTech said in a rare long-term study of switchers. In the past year, just eight percent of iPhone owners left for Android or another platform. The data doesn't include enterprise users and might tip more in favor of Apple, as Android currently has a smaller stake in the workplace.

Sprint confirms unlimited data for iPhone 4S
Sprint will indeed offer unlimited data for the iPhone 4S, a spokesperson has confirmed. Michelle Mermelstein states that the company is not altering its smartphone data plans, which are priced between $70 and $100 a month. Previously observers had worried that Sprint would follow in the steps of AT&T and Verizon, which have imposed transfer caps on their customers to mitigate iPhone traffic. The 4S will launch with all three carriers on October 14th, following a round of pre-orders beginning on the 7th.

Sprint will offer unlimited data plan for the iPhone 4S
A Sprint spokesperson gave us a ring to let us know that the newly announced iPhone 4S will be eligible for the carrier's unlimited data plan. Parallels Desktop 7 updates with early Windows 8 support
Parallel has released a new version of Desktop 7 for Mac, v7.0.14924. The update's main addition is "experimental" support for the Windows 8 Developer Preview, giving people a chance to test the platform inside a virtual machine. Windows 8 is scheduled to ship sometime in 2012.

Study claims 42% of US wants a Windows tablet over iPad
Boston Consulting Group made a controversial claim Wednesday in a study alleging that more wanted a Windows tablet than an iPad. Of the cross-section of Americans, 42 percent said they would prefer Windows on their tablets to just 27 percent wanting an iPad. Only 20 percent wanted Android, and nine percent wanted a BlackBerry PlayBook.

App submissions open for iCloud-compatible titles
Apple is now accepting submissions for all iCloud-compatible apps in addition to ones supporting iOS 5, notes AppleInsider. This incorporates software designed for OS X Lion, not just iOS. iCloud is scheduled to go live on October 12th, several months after an announcement at WWDC.

iOS 5 GM users report early issues with geofences, mail
Some users of the iOS 5 Gold Master are experiencing trouble with the firmware, anecdotes indicate. The first issue is said to lie with mail notifications. comScore: Android near 44% share but slowing down
Android hit a new high in the US this August but has mostly steadied, comScore found in its latest results. Google's platform was up to 43.7 percent of smartphones, a new high, but it grew roughly as much as had in July. Most of the share came from BlackBerry converts, as the platform had lost two points just in the past month to hit 19.7 percent, or five points back from where it was in May.

This week, lawmakers in Italy are debating a controversial new bill that could have disastrous implications for Wikipedia. Phones4u: iPhone 4S signups double those of iPhone 4
British phone store Phones4u partly debunked beliefs the iPhone 4S might not sell well after touting very high early interest on its sign-up page. FCC wants all cellphones to be GPS-capable by 2018 for improved 911 service
There's still no real indication of when you'll be able to send text messages, photos and videos to 911, but the FCC has now set a date for another promised enhancement to the service. The agency is aiming to increase the service's location accuracy requirements, and to that end it wants all cellphones and VoIP devices to be GPS-capable by 2018 (A-GPS, specifically). eBay, Gazelle launch resale promos in light of iPhone 4S
Some vendors have begun special trade-in promotions in the wake of yesterday's iPhone 4S announcement. Chief among these is eBay, which has launched an Instant Sale promotion that ends at 11:59PM Pacific time on Wednesday. Microsoft reveals new TV providers on Xbox 360 in the US and internationally
Just as the rumors indicated, Microsoft is bringing video from a number of providers beyond the ones it initially announced to the Xbox 360 in its fall update, including big guns like Verizon and Comcast. While Verizon is promising live TV on the Xbox 360, Comcast is only bringing its Xfinity TV video on-demand offerings when it launches "in the coming months". Tablets just 1.8% of Android as Gingerbread still a minority
Google's progress and drawbacks in Android were seen in equal measure at the start of the week as its latest version share breakdown showed how much it continued to depend on smartphones and older versions. After eight months, Android 3 (Honeycomb) tablets still make up just 1.8 percent of the user base. Less than half of that group, 0.7 percent, is using the latest version of the OS.

Apple now offering $200+ in exchange for used iPhone 4s
Apple has begun offering as much as $200 or more for used iPhone 4s as a part of its Reuse and Recycling program. The $200 figure applies to a 16GB iPhone 4 in good condition. For that amount a device must be fully functional, including the battery, and lacking any scratches, scuffs, cracks or water damage. A person must also do a factory reset of iOS and supply the power adapter.

Nach iPhone 4S Keynote: Apple senkt Preise für alte iPhones
Nach der Vorstellung des neuen iPhone 4S hat Apple still und heimlich die Preise für die älteren Modelle deutlich reduziert und somit den Preiskampf auf den Smartphone-Markt eröffnet.
Zugegeben: Unterm Strich war die gestrige Apple Keynote enttäuschend. Statt einem neuen iPhone 5 zu präsentieren, blieb es am Ende beim iPhone 4S. Das neue iPhone kommt zwar mit einem komplett überarbeiteten Innenleben und bietet mit der Sprachsteuerung Siri etwas revolutionäres, doch nach 15 Monate Pause haben wir doch mehr erwartet. Samsung wants to block iPhone 4S sales in France, Italy
There's nothing like major corporations acting like a bunch of kids on a playground. As you remember, Samsung and Apple have been locked in a patent infringement lawsuit for quite some time. Apple is trying (quite successfully, I may add) to block the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10 tablet in several countries, so now Samsung is playing tit-for-tat and wants to block sales of the brand new iPhone 4S in France and Italy.

CTIA tries to block SF cellphone law under 'free speech'
As promised, the CTIA has asked a federal court to block the enforcement of San Francisco's Ordinance that warns users of the potential radiation danger from cellphones. The "Cell Phone Right-to-Know" ordinance allegedly violates the First Amendment to free speech, the CTIA argues. Apple posts early upgrade costs for iPhone 4S
Apple is already informing customers about early upgrade pricing for the iPhone 4S, even though pre-orders are only set to start on October 7th. For a Verizon iPhone 4 bought in February, for instance, a 16GB 4S is $649, while a 32GB model is $749, and 64GB is $849. Regular upgrade/new customer prices are $199, $299 and $399, respectively.

Samsung takes a swipe at iPhone 4S already
Samsung didn't waste any time comparing its flagship Samsung Galaxy S II handset to Apple's recently announced iPhone 4S. The South Korean manufacturer sent out a note to the press detailing why its Android handset is superior to Apple's latest offering.
According to Samsung, the Galaxy S II display has 42% more screen area than the iPhone 4. It notes that "screen size benefits scale by AREA (length x width), not just diagonal." The Galaxy S II is also the thinnest handset on the market and has faster HSPA+ network speeds than the iPhone 4S.

Analysts: iPhone 4S a plus despite some disappointments
The announcement of the iPhone 4S is a good thing overall, even if yesterday's event was somewhat disappointing, analysts suggest. Sterne Agee's Shaw Wu remarks that many people were expecting an iPhone 5 with a larger screen and thinner shape. Needham's Charlie Wolf, by contrast, concentrates on the absence of an expected "iPhone Lite," even if Apple did drop the prices of older hardware. UBM TechInsights' VP of technical intelligence, David Carey, describes the 4S as a "modest technology bump," equivalent to the transition from the iPhone 3G to the 3GS.

Over the past few weeks, we've seen HP and Toshiba freshen up their all-in-ones, while Samsung made a belated jump into the market just last week. Today, it's Dell's turn -- the company just announced an addition to its all-in-one lineup, the 23-inch Inspiron One 2320. Apple's Knowledge Navigator, Siri and the iPhone 4S
Back in 1987, Apple produced a concept video describing a product known as Knowledge Navigator. Knowledge Navigator is a computer app with bow-tied personal assistant that would let you interact with your device using your voice and natural language. You can check messages, find appointments, share documents and more.
Sound familiar? It should as it's surprisingly similar to Siri, the natural language personal assistant Apple introduced at its iPhone 4S event yesterday. Not only is Knowledge Navigator like Siri, the scenario in the concept video also takes place in September

Microsoft contradicts self on Zune death
Microsoft's support team claimed late Tuesday that it hadn't officially ended the Zune. Despite a public support page explicitly stating no more devices were being made, the support team told a user that "no official info has been released" dropping the platform. Android Gingerbread has growth spurt, grabs 38.2 percent device share
Gingerbread has apparently made a substantial mark on Android users, with new figures showing it holds a 38.2 percent share of all Google OS-powered devices. That's some kind of growth from the one percent sliver it held earlier this year. Froyo still remains dominant at 45.3 percent, but fragmentation continues to shrink, with 95.7 percent of all Google-coated devices now running Android 2.1 or above. Fujitsu Arrows Tab LTE F-01D with gesture control hands-on (video)
We'll probably never match Japan's obsession with waterproof gadgets, but anyone would appreciate how the local manufacturers also manage to keep them thin and light at the same time. The Fujitsu Arrows Tab LTE F-01D we fiddled with here at CEATEC is one such example: while it's thicker than Samsung's 10.1-inch counterpart by almost 3mm, we were surprised that Fujitsu's latest Android tablet also weighs just under 600g -- not bad considering it's suitable for use in the shower.

Wildings is the first mobile title from Metamoki, which is traditionally a social gaming company. Still, the game is pretty dynamic anyway. It reminds me a lot of Battleheart actually, which is an iOS game that I really love, though Wildings isn't quite as polished or complex.
The idea is that you control a set of creatures trying to defend a nest of baby birds, and you can guide your troops in real-time around the screen as you fend off attackers. You collect suns as you go (in a mechanic borrowed from Plants vs. Zombies, apparently), and then later on, those suns can be used to power your various abilities, doing things like slowing down attackers or even clearing them off the screen.

Kia to roll out re-badged Hyundai electric minicar in late 2011
There's still no indication that it'll hit the North American market, but it looks like Kia will soon have an all-electric "minicar" to call its own. That will come in the form of a re-badged Hyundai i10 (pictured above), which is expected to pack a 16-kWh lithium-ion battery and a range somewhere south of a hundred miles. LTE chip tech blamed for iPhone 5 no show
Apple did not deliver an all-new iPhone 5 at its October 4 iPhone 4S event due to the current state of LTE chip technology, according to analysts. The president of Forward Concepts, Will Strauss, believes that Apple is holding back on an iPhone 5 until LTE chips are more compact. Adobe hat die Wolke für Designer entdeckt: Creative Cloud heisst sie hier und soll ein "Hub zum Anschauen, Sharen und Synchronisieren von Files sein, die mit den Adobe Touch Apps und der Adobe Creative Suite" erstellt wurden. 14-inch Dell ultrabook due at CES, HP may hit late 2011
More details of the ultrabooks from Dell and HP have poppoed up in a brief leak. The Dell model is now expected by Digitimes sources to have a 14-inch screen, making it one of the larger MacBook Air alternatives. iPhone 4S 32GB raw parts cost pegged at $203
UBM Techinsights gave a preliminary cost breakdown of the iPhone 4S. Based on past history and estimates, it reckoned Apple's new phone would cost $203 in pure components for a 32GB version. The most expensive component would be the flash memory itself, at $38, followed by the 640x960 display ($31) and the dual-core A5 chip ($26).

New iPhone 4S to use Bluetooth 4.0
Apple's just-announced iPhone 4S is the first iPhone to utilize the Bluetooth 4.0 specification (though it is already in use in the latest MacBook Air and Mac mini), which focuses on making the wireless protocol use dramatically less power, and offers lower latency and tougher encryption. The standard Bluetooth used in most recent Apple devices is now referred to as "classic" Bluetooth, while the new 4.0 specification features the option of using as little as one one-hundredth as much power in its most idle state.

Report: Canada will get Siri voice assistant with iPhone 4S
Longtime Mac and technology reporter Jim Dalrymple says he has confirmed with Apple that Canadians will be able to use at least the U.S.-localized version of Siri voice technology found on the iPhone 4S when the model arrives there, which is scheduled to take place simultaneously with the U.S. launch.

Apple now accepting iOS 5 app submissions
Apple has officially given the green light to iOS apps and updates to apps built using the beta SDK development tools, which were promoted to Golden Master earlier today. Developers can now submit their updates or new applications that are updated to take advantage of iOS 5 features, such as iMessage, Notification Center, reminders and system-wide Twitter integration. App Store reviewers will have a very short time -- just over a week -- to test and approve (or reject) a flood of application submissions.

Whitman moves up decision on fate of HP PCs to October
HP's new CEO Meg Whitman said on Tuesday that she wanted to accelerate the decision on HP's PC business to no later than the end of October. Speaking at the Most Powerful Women Summit, she wanted to move it up to faster than the December timeframe ousted CEO Leo Apotheker had leaned towards. XBMC teases new features coming in 11.0 'Eden' release
The next version of XBMC isn't ready for prime time yet, but the team behind it is already talking about what's being added and tweaked in v11.0, a.k.a Eden. FCC to require option of GPS all phones for 911 by 2018
The FCC put forward new rule Tuesday that required carriers to offer phones with built-in GPS. Its mandate will have cellular, landline, and VoIP providers have positioning to help find them in a 911 call no later than 2018. Carriers won't have to limit themselves to GPS-aware phones after the cutoff, possibly softening worries that the government might track anyone with a phone.

Apple denied motions to halt Motorola lawsuits
Apple has been denied its two motions to stay Motorola's lawsuits over the Google-Motorola merger. Both a Florida court ruling late last week and a Wisconsin ruling on Monday decided that the right to have a lawsuit over patent infringement trumped concerns that Motorola's claims might be invalidated in the change of hands to Google. The Wisconsin judge also disagreed with Apple's belief that Google needed to be involved in the lawsuit for it to continue as-is and thus that needed to be stayed.

Looks like some of those Toshiba camcorders that we first caught wind of back in Berlin at IFA are hitting our neck of the woods. The Camileo x400 and x200 are now available in the States, for $299 and $279, respectively. The company will also be offering up a higher-end x416 on October 10th for $319. All three camcorders shoot 1080p video and feature a similar barrel-shaped design with a three-inch swiveling touchscreen LCD. Apple posts new 10.7.2 'GM seed' to developers
Having earlier posted a Golden Master for iOS 5 to developers, Apple has now posted the "GM seed," build 11C73, of both Lion 10.7.2 and Lion Server 10.7.2 through its dev channel. The GM will further add support for the soon-to-be-released iCloud service, as well as a minor update to Safari (now at version 5.1.1). The GM build sports no known issues but carries a few bug fixes and tweaks to existing code.

Apple gets selective on Lion vs. Windows 7 adoption numbers
Apple during its Let's Talk iPhone event claimed to have outpaced Microsoft in terms of practical OS adoption. In contextualizing six million downloads of Mac OS X Lion, CEO Tim Cook claimed that the Mac's relative adoption rate was much faster, taking two weeks to reach 10 percent of the user base where Microsoft took 20. Apple posts video stream for October 4th press event
Apple has posted a web stream for the iPhone-centric press event held earlier today. In all the presentation is over 96 minutes long, and covers topics such as iCloud, iOS 5, the iPhone 4S and minor iPod updates.
