Software update brings new features to 2010 iPod nano
Although it's not on Apple's support site yet, Macstories reports that a software update is available for the 6th generation (2010) iPod nano, updating the software to version 1.2 with the following features:
Easier navigation with two icon sizes

AT&T to launch Upgrader App, webpages for iPhone upgrades
Later today AT&T will open up two different upgrade services related to the iPhone 4S, according to an announcement. The first is the AT&T Upgrader App, which will let people both check upgrade eligibility and preorder a phone, although preorders are only scheduled to start on October 7th. The software will be available for existing iPhone owners through the App Store. AT&T subscribers with other devices will have to visit att.com/phoneupgrade.

News: Apple posts video of ‘Let’s talk iPhone’ event
Apple has posted a streaming video feed of today’s “Let’s talk iPhone” event. At the event, which lasted upwards of 90 minutes, Apple highlighted its upcoming iOS 5 operating system and iCloud, announced modest updates to the iPod nano and iPod touch, unveiled its new Cards and Find My Friends apps, and debuted the iPhone 4S. Apple Micro-USB-Adapter landet im Online Store
Laut einer EU-Richtline muss ein Smartphone spätestens 2012 über einen Micro-USB-Anschluss verfügen oder zumindest über einen Adapter verfügen. AppleCare+ debuts for $99, offers to cover accidental damage in addition to the standard fare

Apple rolls out iOS 5 Gold Master, $99 AppleCare+ plan
Apple is now seeding a Gold Master release of iOS 5 to developers. The code is effectively the finished version of the firmware, but should give developers a headstart on testing app compatibility. It also gives Apple a chance to fix any show-stopping bugs that might have survived earlier testing, however unlikely. The public release of iOS 5 is scheduled for October 12th.

Nachdem Apple parallel zum Event in Cupertino auch Pressevertreter in London eingeladen hatte konnte die BBC bereits das iPhone 4S einem allerersten kurzem Test unterziehen. Apple macht iPhone kompatibel mit Micro USB, mit 9 Euro ist man dabei

Für neun Euro dreht Apple in Richtung Micro USB und EU-Direktive, die eben diese Schnittstelle als Standard für Smartphones festgelegt hat. Von Dock Connector will man sich in Cupertino natürlich nicht trennen, komme was wolle. Ein Blick in sonstiges Kabel/Stecker-Zubehör von Apple zeigt aber immerhin, dass man die Gewinn-Marge hier deutlich geringer hält. Gut so. Noch besser wäre, wenn der Adapter jeden neuen iPhone und iPod touch umsonst beiliegen würde. Und nochmal besser wäre, wenn Apple mal einen Muttersprachler anstellen würde, um die grammatikalisch

iPhone 4S: Alle Highlights und Neuerungen in der Übersicht
iPhone 4S – so heißt das neue iPhone-Modell, dass Apple heute auf der Welt vorstellte. Von außen sieht es genauso aus wie sein Vorgänger, dafür ist das Innenleben komplett erneuert worden. Alle Neuerungen wie Spracherkennung des iPhone 4S gibt es in der Übersicht, wobei ein komplett neues iPhone 5 nicht kommen wird.
Die schlechte Nachricht zuerst: Es wird in diesem Jahr kein iPhone 5 geben, welches ein größeres Display oder abgerundete Ecken hat. Stattdessen präsentierte Apple auf seiner Keynote das iPhone 4S. Facebook event said coming after iPhone 4S event no-show
Facebook's absence at the iPhone 4S event was owed to a last-minute but not fatal exit from the schedule. Insiders claimed that its portion, which was tentative to start, was cancelled "late last night." Apple unveils dock to micro USB adapter to comply with EU standards
European Union regulations require cell phone vendors to include micro USB connectors as a means of standardizing charging options for cell phones, a necessary move to cut down on the plethora of mutually incompatible charging options that have proliferated through the mobile phone industry. Rather than alter the iPhone itself, Apple has instead begun offering a micro USB adapter that connects via the existing 30-pin dock connector. Thus far it appears to be available only in the UK Apple Store, and at £8.00 it seems fairly inexpensive as far as Apple's accessories go. It will be available on October 14.

iPhone 4, 3GS drop in price following 4S announcement
Although the iPhone 4S is now Apple's flagship smartphone, the company is keeping both the iPhone 4 and 3GS on sale. Like the 3GS the 4 is now restricted to 8GB of memory, although black and white tones are still available, as is the choice of going with AT&T or Verizon in the US. Zwar wurde kein iPhone 5 vorgestellt, trotzdem handelt es sich beim iPhone 4S um mehr als reine Produktpflege. Durch den Einsatz des Apple A5-Prozessors kann Apple sich in Puncto Leistung von der Konkurrenz absetzen, die Grafikleistung ist für ein solch kleines Gerät beeindruckend, zumal die Grafikleistung des Vorgängermodells als keineswegs schlecht bezeichnet werden kann. Apple bereitet Launch des Services allerdings schon mit Hochdruck vor und hat und hat die teilnehmenden Labels aufgefordert, bei Interesse die neuen Features und die damit verbundenen Abrechnungs- und Vergütungsbedingungen zu akzeptieren. Apple's site suggests unlocked iPhone 4S will be available
A question that's been on many people's minds today, including mine, is whether or not the iPhone 4S will be offered in an unlocked, contract-free option like the iPhone 4 has been for the past several months. I know I've been awaiting the answer to this question with great interest, especially with news today suggesting the iPhone 4S won't be available where I live until December.
Wording on Apple's iPhone page suggests that it will be offered unlocked. The below excerpt is directly from Apple's FAQ for the device (relevant portions in bold for emphasis):

iPod touch 2011: schwarz, weiß und hochauflösend (Update)

Neben den neuen iPod nanos hat Apple auch dem iPod touch ein Update verpasst, wobei die augenfälligste Neuerung das Retina-Display mit 960 mal 640 Pixeln ist, was dann auf eine Auflösung von 326 dpi hinausläuft und wirklich beeindruckend scharf zu werden verspricht. Passend kommt der iPod touch mit HD-Videos, außerdem mit Gyroskop, iOS 5, dem Apple-eigenen, kostenlosen Chat-Dienst iMessage und einem "Game Center" für Multiplayer Games. iCloud will launch on October 12th, alongside iOS 5, Apple has announced. The cloud service saves and syncs content between all compatible devices, which includes anything running iOS 5 or OS X Lion. Content types primarily consist of apps, music and books from iTunes, but also the likes of mail, contacts, calendars, photos, and documents. AAPL takes a hit despite iPhone 4S news
Apple's share price has dropped dramatically after today's announcement of the iPhone 4S. At 3:07 PM EDT, AAPL was down over $16 per share to $358.51, although it could recover before today's market close.
While this doesn't look good for Wall Street's enthusiasm for the new device, the stock drop is actually quite normal for the day of an Apple announcement. We've seen similar results after announcements of most new Apple devices, with the stock usually recovering or rising the next day.

AppleCare+ for iPhone covers accidental damage
One good accessory purchase for any iPhone buyer is AppleCare, but now Apple has upped the ante with a new product called AppleCare+ -- they'll now cover accidental damage to your iPhone.
AppleCare+ ($US99) must be purchased at the same time that you buy your new iPhone, and covers up to two incidents of damage due to handling errors. For each of those incidents, Apple will extract a $49 service fee, but that's a lot less expensive than purchasing a whole new iPhone.
AppleCare+ is available for purchase now, and shows a delivery date of October 14 -- the date that the first iPhone 4S devices will be available.

The iOS 5 Gold Master! Finally! Feels like we've been waiting all Summer and a bit of Autumn for this to happen -- of course, that's exactly how long it's been since WWDC.
The release candidate SDK is now available for download by paid devs at the iOS developer site.
As with the pre-RC betas, you'll also find all the other items that continue to be synchronously updated to support the beta. Sign in with your developer credentials to gain access to the updated SDK.
Now that the Gold Master has dropped, non-developers can look forward to the full version which will arrive on October 12. The update to iOS 5 will be free.

Refreshed iPod touch and iPod nano now available at Apple Store
The store is back up. US customers can now place orders for the updated iPod nano and iPod touch and the reduced-priced iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. Starting at $129 for the iPod nano and $199 for the iPod touch, Apple is reporting that all models of the black iPod touch and the iPod nano are in stock as of today. App Store begins accepting iOS 5 submissions
iOS 5 is almost here, boys and girls, and Apple has just given the green light for firmware-specific App Store submissions.
This happens before each major release, where developers can begin to submit software using the gold master SDK. Until that time, App Store forbids submissions using beta SDK development tools.
Reviewers are typically overwhelmed once the notice is given, although they appear to work overtime to get material reviewed in a timely fashion. This is one of those times you really see Apple bending over backwards to help developers get ready for launch.
Developers have been building tools all summer, waiting (but dreading) this moment. In a way, it's always too long to wait. In another, it's always too short a time period to get everything done. But that's the way Apple and

News: New Details on iPhone 4S emerge: weight, Bluetooth 4.0, more
As noted on Apple’s iPhone 4S specs page, the new handset offers Bluetooth 4.0 support. In addition, although Apple touted it’s improved battery life when talking over 3G, the device’s standby life seems to have taken a considerable 33% drop, from 300 hours on the iPhone 4 to 200 hours on the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 4S is also slightly heavier at 4.9 ounces than the iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS, both of which weigh in at 4.8 ounces.

8 GB iPhone 3GS now free with contract, iPhone 4 price dropped
With the announcement of the new iPhone 4S today, Apple has also dropped the price on the previous versions of the iPhone. The iPhone 3GS version with 8 GB of memory is now down to the low, low price of absolutely free (as long as you're willing to sign up on a two-year contract with the cellphone service providers), so you've really got no excuse to join the rest of us in the smartphone future.
The iPhone 4 has had a price drop as well -- the 8 GB version is now just $99. Apple's iPhone is cheaper than ever, and while yes, you won't be able to run some of the sexiest new features with these older phones, they're still excellent devices.

Appe unveils iPhone 4S with A5 chip, new antenna system
Apple today revealed the iPhone 4S, its next-generation smartphone. The device makes the switch to dual-core A5 processor, giving it about twice the CPU speed of the iPhone 4 but a seven-fold improvement in graphics performance. The phone also includes a new antenna system, which automatically switches between two antennas to transmit and receive. More importantly, download and upload speeds have jumped to 14.4Mbps and 5.8Mbps respectively, and the device is a world phone, capable of handling both GSM and CDMA networks.

Phil Schiller has announced that the iPod touch is not only the most popular iPod, it's also now the most popular portable gaming device in the world. But as expected, Apple didn't announce many new changes to the iPod touch line. Now the iPod touch comes in both white and black models, but the same storage sizes as before: 16, 32, and 64 GB. Epic Games announces Infinity Blade 2, coming 12/1 on iPhone 4S
Mike Capp from Epic Games has taken the stage at Apple's iPhone event in Cupertino today to show off Infinity Blade 2, the upcoming sequel to one of the most popular games on iOS (a game, incidentally, that Epic says it's made $20 million from already). The new game will reportedly take full advantage of the newly announced iPhone 4S' A5 graphics chip, and even implement "some graphics techniques that aren't even available on home gaming consoles." The demo shown was of course beautiful, featuring lots of reflections and shadows, and even in-world details like koi swimming in a pond and fireflies in the air.

Apple announces the iPhone 4S
Apple has announced the next-generation iPhone, the iPhone 4S. Although externally it appears identical to the iPhone 4, internally it's seen many changes. It includes the same dual-core A5 processor that debuted in the iPad 2. Its graphics processor, which is also dual-core, provides up to 7 times the graphical performance of the iPhone 4's A4 chip.
The iPhone 4S has improved battery life over its predecessor, and it now allows for 8 hours 3G talktime, 14 hours 2G talktime, and 6 hours of 3G web browsing.
The iPhone 4S's wireless system has also been tweaked; the handset will now intelligently switch between antennas for optimal performance. This not only improves signal reliability, it also doubles the theoretical maximum speed from 7.2 Mbps on the iPhone 4 to 14.4 Mbps on the iPhone 4S. The

AirPlay Mirroring coming to iPhone 4S, not just for iPads
That snazzy AirPlay Mirroring feature Apple showed off at WWDC earlier this year is back for an encore, and now it's strutting its stuff on the iPhone 4S. Apple announces Find My Friends service
Apple has announced the much-rumored Find My Friends app. The app allows you to quickly see the location of friends who have opted to share their location with you. The app will offer deep levels of customization, such as letting users set a time window when they share their information. Also, at the end of the day, location sharing stops automatically and a person's location won't be shared again until they re-enable it.

iCloud going live on October 12
Apple has announced that the long-awaited iCloud service will finally go live on October 12. The service will be free for Lion and iOS 5 users (the new mobile OS releases on the same day), and will enable cloud sharing of user contacts, pictures, and other pertinent user data across all of your Mac and iOS devices.
Apple also went over iTunes Match functionality again, which will work in tandem with iCloud to deliver music to you directly from the iTunes store. Apple: Six million copies of OS X Lion downloaded since launch
Before we get to the real meat of things, Tim Cook's just trotted out some Lion numbers -- six million copies downloaded since launch, to be exact. According to the big Apple's new CEO, that's a growth of 80 percent over Snow Leopard. Of course, those numbers would mean nothing without a little comparison. Cook says it took Windows 7 20 weeks to meet 10 percent of Windows' install base, compared to the two weeks it took Lion to reach the same portion of OS X users.

Tim Cook: Macbook Pro and iMac are the best selling notebook and desktop in the US
Tim Cook kicked off today's 'Let's talk iPhone' event by the numbers, mentioning that "the MacBook Pro and iMac are the number one best selling notebook and desktop in the United States." Apple: 16 billion iTunes songs downloaded, 300 million iPods sold
Tim Cook's dishing out plenty of numbers today, and there's some big ones when it comes to the iPod and iTunes. He confirmed that there's now been a whopping 16 billion songs downloaded from iTunes, and 300 million iPods sold. Apple announces Find My Friends feature for iOS 5
Apple spent a fair bit of time recapping some already announced iOS 5 features during its keynote today, but it also got around to announcing a new one: Find My Friends. That will let you easily find friends nearby who have opted to share their location with you, and you'll also be able to invite friends to share their location for a limited time -- when they're driving to your house, for instance, so you can give them directions. iTunes Match hits US 'end of October' for $24.99

iPhone 4S officially announced with A5 CPU
What's this? The second coming of the iPhone 4? Sure enough, Tim Cook just pulled the covers off of the hotly-anticipated iPhone 4S here in Cupertino, making 2011 the first year in the company's current stint in the smartphone business that it chose to launch three new handsets (Verizon's CDMA iPhone 4 included, of course). On the outside the 4S looks exactly like its predecessor, but on the inside it's "all new." Apple has jammed a dual-core A5 CPU inside alongside a new dual-core GPU that supposedly boosts graphics performance by up to 7x.

BlackBerry tops iPhone for loyalty in the UK
BlackBerry owners are the most loyal phone customers in the UK. A recent study by comScore has found that 69.9 percent of the RIM smartphone user bought another BlackBerry when they replaced their phones. Apple owners were only slightly less loyal with 65.2 percent buying another iPhone.

Apple shares huge iPhone sales and approval numbers
Tim Cook, subdued as he is today, was probably most excited this morning when talking about just how well the iPhone has done lately. The iPhone 4 specifically, says Cook, has continued to sell like crazy, and in fact now makes up half of the sales of the iPhone in total, overcoming both the original and the 3G and 3GS in units. "That momentum is far outpacing the industry," said Cook in today's event.
Customer satisfaction is huge for the phone as well -- the iPhone is consistently rated number 1 in every survey Cook says he can find, and 93% of the Fortune 500 companies are currently testing or deploying the iPhone in their operations.

Apple iPod and iTunes continue to dominate the music industry
Apple unveiled the iPod ten years ago and revolutionized the music industry, says Tim Cook during Apple's iPhone keynote. The mp3 player still dominates with over 70% market share, a figure that has slowly killed off its competition. Since its introduction Apple has sold over 330 million units worldwide, 45 million of which were sold from July 2010 to June 2011.
And the iTunes music store is equally as dominant. In the eight years since it was introduced, Apple's music library has grown from 200,000 songs to over 200 million. More than 18 billion apps downloaded from App Store
Scott Forstall dropped some impressive numbers about iOS and the App Store today. He told the audience that iOS has grabbed the #1 mobile-operating system spot with a 43% market share. Android is in second place with 33%. Those numbers as of July and are reported by ComScore.

Apple's Cards available on October 12 for iOS
Apple has announced a new official app for iOS. Cards will use any photo taken with an iOS device, and put that photo, along with a message, on high-quality paper to your specifications. The company will even mail it out for you with Apple-designed postage and lettering. Essentially, it offers a way for you to design and deliver custom greeting cards directly from your iOS device, wherever you happen to be.
Apple's Cards is due out on October 12. The app seems to be free, though obviously it'll cost you to send and print a card -- $2.99 in the U.S., and $4.99 around the rest of the world. You'll even get a push notification on your device whenever the card is actually printed and sent out. iOS 5 available October 12
Apple has announced that its next-generation mobile OS, iOS 5, will launch to the public on October 12. It will be a free upgrade for the iPad, iPad 2, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the third- and fourth-generation iPod touches.
iOS 5 includes a number of new features, including a revamped notifications system, improved Camera app, iMessages, and many other tweaks and improvements.
The "gold master" version of iOS 5 has not yet been released as of this writing, but it will likely be released today if the public release is due eight days from today.

Tim Cook announces impressive Apple Retail Store numbers

Tim Cook has taken the stage in San Francisco to kick off today's Apple event, and he's shared some big numbers for Apple's retail stores. The company's largest store in Asia boasted more than 100,000 visitors in just its opening weekend. Cook says Apple was impressed when its LA store had over 100,000 visitors in a month, so that weekend must have been really busy.
The Hong Kong store also had a solid turnout, selling more Macs on its first day open than the company has at any other store in the world. Apple currently has 357 stores in 11 different countries, says Cook, and "many more are coming."

6 million copies of Lion sold since July 20
Tim Cook announced today that Apple's OS X 10.7 Lion has sold more than 6 million copies since going on sale July 20. That's a whopping 80% more than Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. From http://www.apple.com/jp/retail/ginza/. The translation says something about "selecting a carrier," which means that Apple might be adding carriers in Japan. Right now it's only Softbank, if we recall correctly.

iPhone 4S landing on October 14th according to Apple Store page in Japan
Well, Tim Cook has yet to even take the stage and already the leaks are starting to pour in. It started with a pair of images buried in the Apple store's HTML code. But, perhaps more telling, was the page for the Ginza, Japan store listing the launch of the iPhone 4S as a featured event starting at 8am on October 14th. While that doesn't necessarily mean the tweaked iPhone 4 variant will launch everywhere on the same day, it seems a safe bet that the US and UK will be getting in on the action that Friday morning.

Innovatio IP sues hotels, coffee shops offering Wi-Fi
Innovatio IP Ventures, a company that owns a portfolio of patents reportedly tied to Wi-Fi technology, has began suing coffee shops, grocery stores, restaurants and hotels for allegedly infringing upon those patents. According to PatentExaminer, the company's strategy is to prey on ill-prepared franchises rather than parent companies and offering them the option of settling for between $2,300 and $5,000. Innovatio is represented by Niro, Haller & Niro, the firm associated with patent trolls from the time the term was coined.

Psystar lawyer says battle is "far from over"
Psystar was dealt a setback last week when a judge denied its appeal and upheld a permanent injunction that prevents the Mac clone maker from selling PC hardware with Mac OS X installed. Undeterred, Psystar's legal team has vowed to take the fight to the Supreme Court, if needed. "This is far from over," said K.A.D. Camera of Camera & Sibley LLP, the firm that is representing Psystar in this case.

iCub crawls closer toward the Robopocalypse (video)
Another day, another augur of doom for humanity -- iCub has been spotted in the wilds of the IROS Expo in San Francisco. The cute (in a Demon Seed sorta way) robot is designed to replicate the trial-and-error learning process of a three year-old. The Wall Street Journal is chiming in with a last-minute rumor suggesting the iPhone will not support 4G LTE or WiMAX. Late rumors: iPhone 4S has better GPS, teardrop too early
Last-minute rumors have pointed to the iPhone 4S being a worthwhile upgrade but not as dramatic as suggested by some. Along with the expected performance leaps of an A5 and eight-megapixel camera, TNW was told by a source it would have "improved optics," likely a reference to the f2.4 aperture lens that should lead to brighter, faster photos. The switch to using the GPS built into Qualcomm's dual-mode chipset should also lead to more accurate GPS.

Apple's patent dispute with Samsung over the Galaxy Tab 10.1 may have succeeded in keeping the Samsung tablet from the Australian market. NPD says kids are buying more digital media than ever

At Apple's online store today save on refurbished iPods starting at $129 for the 8GB iPod nano, or $149 for the 16GB iPod nano. Remember that pair of myTouch-branded LG phones that made a brief appearance on YouTube back in September? Well they're up on T-Mobile's site and listed as "coming soon." Next-gen iPhone won't support WiMAX, says WSJ
The next-generation iPhone -- being announced later today -- will not support WiMAX, sources for the Wall Street Journal say. Instead the phone will be 3G-only, although AT&T is noted to claim that its 3G network has 4G-like speeds. One-time iPad cloners forced to cut prices after Kindle Fire
Tablet makers that have focused most of their time producing cheap alternatives to the iPad are themselves being squeezed by the Amazon Kindle Fire, the retail field acknowledged early Tuesday. NTT DoCoMo Shared Bicycle Initiative hands-on (video)
Well, NTT DoCoMo is at it again, this time dabbling in the fine art of bicycle sharing. The Japanese mobile carrier's own flavor is currently undergoing beta testing in Yokohama, just outside Tokyo, and uses a familiar kiosk system to collect and dish out bikes. Residents (and tourists with Japanese cell phone numbers) can rent bikes 30 minutes at a time for 105 Yen (about $1.40) for the first half hour, then 210 Yen for each subsequent period. Supreme Court denies ASCAP claim donwnloads are performances
The US Supreme Court late Monday rejected ASCAP's attempt to claim that song downloads are public performances. Its verdict upheld an earlier appeal ruling without added comment. The Adventures of Timmy is the first iPhone game from New York's digital content studio Crossborders. The company recently started up a division just to work on mobile games, and Run Kitty Run is the result. It's a level-based platformer with some interesting graphic touches, a cool soundtrack, and lots of solid platforming. As promised yesterday, Adobe has released Flash 11.0.1.152 for Mac OS X, Windows, Linux and Solaris along with version 3 of AIR, it's cross-platform development environment. Both products bring with them new support for Stage 3D, the overall name for hardware-accelerated 2D and 3D graphics that Adobe claims can result in up to 1,000 times faster rendering performance over Flash 10 and AIR 2. ASUS won't fight iPad on price, Transformer 2 to cost $499
ASUS won't follow price cuts from HTC and from RIM to try and compete in the tablet market, CEO Jerry Shen commented Monday. He had no immediate plans to officially slash the price of the current Eee Pad Transformer, according to Digitimes. Researchers say nanorockets could deliver medicine quickly within the blood
Faster delivery is always better when it comes to pizza, Thai food and now drugs? Doctors seem to think so as they're experimenting with a new method of delivering medicine to the bloodstream via tiny nanotubes powered by rocket fuel. By storing healing meds within the platinum-coated metal tubes, doctors have been able to propel the tiny vessels up to 200 times their own length per second -- faster than swimming bacteria. Zune is dead, long live Zune

Double portion of prepaid LG Android handsets coming to Net10
The upcoming battle of the budget Androids just won two new recruits courtesy of Net10. The MVNO is offering up the LG Optimus Net prepaid with a 3.2-inch HVGA display, 800MHz processor, 3MP camera (though Net10's site wrongly mentions 5MP), Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G and an included 4GB microSD card expandable to 32GB. Toshiba's 4K, glasses-free 3DTV announced in Japan with more specs this time
We first saw the retail edition of Toshiba's 3840x2160 resolution autostereoscopic (no glasses) 3DTV when it was announced in Europe at IFA last month, and now it has debuted in Japan during CEATEC. This time the company revealed a few more details, revealing that in lenticular 3D mode it's limited to an effective resolution of 1280x720, and showed off the face tracking that automatically optimizes the experience for up to nine simultaneous viewers depending on where they're sitting. Creative firm declares Steve Jobs Day on October 14
A creative agency named Studiocom has started up a movement to name October 14 as Steve Jobs Day, in order to honor admire and pay tribute to the great Apple Chairman of the Board. The movement is completely unofficial, but the firm wants to get action going on social networks, and even encourage Jobs fans to dress up like their hero in real life and talk about Jobs and his work at Apple with their friends.

Flash 11 and AIR 3 landing tonight and delivering 7.1 surround sound to connected home theaters

Microsoft gives Ballmer full pay bonus despite iPad's damage
Microsoft in an SEC filing confirmed that CEO Steve Ballmer had been given his full possible rewards in his past year's pay. His regularly salary increased two percent to $682,500 for the fiscal year that ended in June but was also matched by a 100 percent bonus, giving him nearly $1.37 million for the year. Even combining this with a 3.95 percent share stake in the company, the committee determining his salary believed he was "underpaid" given his significance and achievements, the overseers said.

Lost iPhone prototype surveillance footage scrubbed
The mystery surrounding the latest lost iPhone prototype has taken another twist with the surveillance footage of the night it went missing now inadvertently erased. According to CNET, the surveillance video, which could have helped shed light on the events of that late August night, has been routinely erased after its hard drive reached its capacity. Worse, the footage was erased before police could review it.

New BlackBerry OS may be called BlackBerry X, take Apple cue
RIM's BlackBerry DevCon this month may see it take a page from Apple in an OS naming scheme and strategy. New leaks from multiple sources pointed to a more unified platform known as BlackBerry X. Showtime Networks recently released a social iPad app that'll let you explore Showtime's lineup of movie and television programs and share what you find with your Facebook or Twitter friends. The app has trailers, webisodes, photos and more from Showtime's movie and popular television shows like Dexter and Homeland. Not surprisingly, the app also lets you find and sign up for Showtime service.

Only in Japan: Toshiba's Regza DBR-M190 serves 5TB of home media
Sometimes gigabytes aren't enough. You have to start talking terabytes. That's the case with Toshiba's new Regza Server, more numerically known as the DBR-M190. The just-announced home media server boasts 5TB of storage, enough for 15 days of MPEG4AVC-compressed digital TV -- from six different channels. Of course, that "server" in the name means you'll be able to stream captured content as well. The sad news? "You" means only Japanese consumers. But if you're one of the chosen many, this media-slinging behemoth will cost you 200,000 yen, or around $2,600.

Discovery Bay expands Duo line of iPad-based board games

Image Comics joins the ComiXology banner

The 'iPad effect' on browser share numbers
InfoWorld has noted an 'iPad effect' on browser share among mobile devices. Broadly speaking, InfoWorld reports that mobile devices now appears to account for approximately seven percent of all browsing, up from three percent in 2010. If accurate, that's a pretty remarkable stat by itself, but more remarkable is where that increase in mobile browsing is coming from.

Sony Ericsson CEO says company 'should have taken iPhone more seriously'
Current Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg wasn't leading the company back when Apple introduced the first iPhone in 2007, but he still has some opinions about how it should have reacted to the phone's debut.
