Monkeys control virtual arm with their brains, may herald breakthrough for paraplegics
Monkey mind-controlled arm: It sounds like the name of an awesomely terrible sci-fi film or a fledgling grindcore group, but it's a very real phenomenon, and one that could pay significant dividends for paraplegics everywhere. Neurobiology professor Miguel Nicolelis and his team of researchers at Duke University recently devised a method by which monkeys (and, perhaps one day, humans) can control a virtual arm using only their brains. ABI: Tablets swamp netbooks, become 75% of ultramobile PCs
Tablets have grown quickly enough that they're now the vast majority of ultramobile PCs in the US, ABI Research determined Thursday. For the year as a whole, the researchers estimated that the iPad and similar tablets would make up 75 percent of the category. The remaining 25 percent would be led by netbooks, but it would also have to split that share with niche PCs like Mobile Internet Devices.

Original Siri Assistant app to stop working on October 15th
The predecessor to Apple's Siri, Siri Assistant, will stop working on October 15th, a message in the iOS app reveals. "Iíve been replaced! The new Siri is even smarter and better-looking than me, and waiting for you on the iPhone 4S. Iíll be leaving for home Oct. 15th," the text says. The software has reportedly been unavailable in the App Store since Tuesday, when the iPhone 4S was announced.

FCC motions to block Verizon's anti-net neutrality lawsuit
Verizon's second attempt to appeal the FCC's net neutrality rules has been met with a rebuttal from the FCC. The governing body is now arguing Verizon's lawsuit is not valid because it doesn't have the needed jurisdiction. The new rules are due to take place into November 20.

News: Siri app disappears from App Store, service ends Oct 15th
Following this week’s announcement that the iPhone 4S will be including the Siri Assistant feature, Apple appears to have removed the standalone Siri app from the App Store. Existing Siri app users are also now seeing a note in the Siri app indicating that an “even smarter and better-looking” version is on the iPhone 4S, and suggesting that standalone app will stop working on October 15th—the day after the release of the iPhone…

FCC details Universal Service Fund switch to broadband
The FCC on Thursday formally proposed the Connect America Fund, its long-promised switch of the Universal Service Fund. A gradual plan would reduce the discounts given to landline phones in favor of Internet access, including a 4G-focused Mobility Fund meant to cover roughly 100,000 miles of roads. The changes would theoretically save $1 billion a year.

Apple stock so far escaping anticipated Jobs-related plunge
Apple stock has so far gone largely unscathed in Thursday trading despite the loss of Steve Jobs, checks show. As of this writing share prices are currently sitting just under $376, actually more than $2 above their opening level on Thursday. During the day stock has vacillated anywhere between $371.80 and $384.78.

Firm warns of Facebook scams exploiting Jobs' death
Scammers have quickly moved to exploit the news of Steve Jobs' death, notes Panda Security. Only hours after word emerged, a Facebook page titled "R.I.P. Steve Jobs" is said to have gone up, with text claiming that 50 free iPads were being given out "in memory of Steve Jobs." In reality the page existed simply to get people to visit a malicious URL, one which may be subjecting people to an expensive flood of spam SMS messages.

SoftBank head hints 2012 iPhone may see Jobs' touch
SoftBank chief Masayoshi Son in the aftermath of Steve Jobs' death has strongly hinted that a full-fledged iPhone 5 should have Jobs' direct influence. Commenting on the loss, he told Reuters that Jobs not only had direct input into the iPhone 4S but to the "following additional work." Wir haben es schon öfter gehört. Aber so langsam scheint das Joint-Venture zwischen Sony und Ericsson dann doch zu zerbrechen. Das Wall Street Journal meldet, dass der Deal den 50% Anteil von Ericsson zurückzukaufen und damit Tablets, Services und Smartphones besser zu integrieren, scheint sich dem Ende zu nähern. Jetzt wäre auch wirklich die richtige Zeit, nicht nur weil der Yen gerade gut gegenüber dem Euro da steht, sondern weil die separate Entwicklung von Tablets und Smartphones immer weniger Sinn macht, und die Integration von Services, Games, Apps, etc. eine immer größere R

Is this Dell's Windows 7 'Peju' Tablet?
A Blurrycam-equipped tipster sent in the above images of what's purported to be a 10-inch Windows 7 tablet from Dell. There's not a lot of info on the thing at the moment, and what we do have ought to be taken with a few pinches of salt. But here's the breakdown, according to the aforementioned tipster: the slate's got 2GB of RAM (though larger options will also be made available from the company), a USB and HDMI port and a stylus holder on the back of the device. In memory of Steve Jobs' life, several Mac software companies are donating 100 percent of their profits to pancreatic cancer research. For the next two days, Realmac Software will collect all revenue generated by RapidWeaver, Analog, Courier and LittleSnapper and donate it to Pancreatic Cancer UK. First Looks: Incase Capsule In Ear Headphones
We've received the first set of headphones from Incase's new audio collection: the Capsule In Ear Headphones ($50). OnLive-Konkurrent von Microsoft in Arbeit

Sony close to buying out Ericsson share of phone business
Sony Ericsson is on the verge of splitting up as Sony hopes to get a more Apple-like control of its phones, insiders disclosed Thursday. Under the terms slipped to the WSJ, Sony would buy Ericsson's 50 percent stake. Time stops presses for special Steve Jobs issue
Time magazine has stopped the presses on a previously-planned issue in order to switch over to one focusing on Steve Jobs, according to an announcement. Both the cover and 21 pages of the revised issue will be dedicated to Jobs; highlights will include a life history by reporters Harry McCracken and Lev Grossman, and a photo essay by Diana Walker, who has been shooting the Apple co-founder since 1982. The cover will be Jobs' seventh on Time and likely last; the photo used is actually by Norman Seeff, captured in 1984.

Here's to the crazy ones: a farewell to Steve Jobs
We knew. We may not have wished to know, and perhaps it was easier to push away that sense of impending sadness, the awareness that time was short, but we knew what was coming. After August, after the resignation, we knew. And yet, it's still shocking. It still hurts.
Steve Jobs was a father and a husband, and the loss for his family -- having suffered with him through the acute, chronic and finally terminal phases of his illness -- is simply unfathomable. For those of use who have seen a family member or loved one taken away decades too soon by this loathsome disease, who know intimately the costs of cancer and its consequences, this is far too familiar. We feel the bereft emptiness they feel now as an echo of our own pain, a sharp pull on the cord of sorrow that connects us to our own absences of the heart.

Es ist schon eigentümlich wie sehr der CEO von Datawind im Interview mit Gadget Guru gegrillt wird, ob es auch wirklich ein Indisches Produkt ist und was genau das bedeutet. Jobs bio author admits knowing disease was terminal
Walter Isaacson -- the author of an upcoming authorized Steve Jobs biography -- knew Jobs was on the verge of death several weeks ago, according to a source for the Wall Street Journal. Isaacson is said to have last interviewed Jobs about four weeks ago, both immediately before and after he resigned from his role as Apple CEO. It was at that point that Jobs acknowledged he was dying, which may suggest that he was resistant to letting go of the company he helped found. The confession is expected to be at the end of the biography, which is simply named Steve Jobs.

We can't say that we were too keen on Sony's DEV-5 Digital Recording Binoculars at first look -- it really is hard to get past that $2,000 price tag. HTC's unaudited Q3 results keep the revenue train a-rollin'
HTC clearly couldn't wait for a pesky audit to tell let the world about its continued financial successes. The Taiwanese handset maker posted unaudited consolidated results for the third quarter -- and, not surprisingly, things are (continuing) to look good for the company. HTC marked a 79.07-percent growth over this time last year, with NT$135,821 million ($4.4 billion) total revenue. And according to HTC, the company's net income post-taxes was NT$18,638 million ($612 million) for the quarter. We'll update the results when we get something a bit more official.

New details of Samsung's Android 4 flagship may have surfaced in a late leak. The curved design, possibly called either the Nexus Prime or Galaxy Nexus, is expected by a reliable BGR source to be thicker than the Galaxy S II but thinner than the iPhone 4S, at about 9mm (0.35in) thick. K-MAX unmanned chopper delivers Air Force salute to Afghan danger (video)
It's a year since Lockheed Martin won the contract to provide an unmanned cargo delivery system to the US military and now its first K-MAX helicopter is just about ready for duty. Ron Wayne: working with Jobs "one of the great privileges"
Apple's only sometimes mentioned third co-founder, Ron Wayne, offered his thoughts on the death of Steve Jobs in an interview late Wednesday. Stanford researchers figured out that, by dipping electrodes for super capacitors in a solution of carbon nanotubes or a conductive polymer they could increase the charging capacity by up to 45-percent. Apple enthusiasts and others touched by the sudden passing of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs have begun gathering and leaving notes or other tributes at Apple stores around the world, from New York City to Australia, and outside Apple's headquarters at 1 Infinite Loop in Cupertino. The gatherings, seen outside many of Apple's flagship stores such as the Fifth Avenue store known as "The Cube" and the downtown San Francisco store, have seen condolence cards and post-it notes, candle and gifts of Apples and photos of Jobs left in tribute.

Former Gizmodo editor and now Wirecutter founder Brian Lam revealed Wednesday evening that the late Steve Jobs had been kind even at the height of the incident surrounding the escaped iPhone 4 prototype. Recalling the conversation after the initial story, he noted that Steve just said he "really want[ed] my phone back" and emphasized that he wasn't mad at the news outlet. TSMC said talking to Apple over A6 chip yields, patents
TSMC is sending an envoy to Cupertino to discuss more details of manufacturing Apple A6 chips, insiders revealed late Wednesday. The talks, which Digitimes claims are to pledge "full support," should talk about 28 nanometer chip manufacturing yields as well as patent terms. The Associated Press moved a bulletin at 7:35 p.m. stating that Steve Jobs has passed away.
Update (7:45 p.m. ET): Apple has confirmed that Jobs passed away today from pancreatic cancer. He was 56 years old.

Miramax warns of possible Apple effect on digital movies
Miramax chief Mike Lang explained to those at the MIPCOM media conference Wednesday night that his studio was trying to prevent Apple from repeating its effect in music on the movie industry. He saw the iTunes operator as having walked in on a digital music business with poor competition and taking a control that persists to this day. Sprint confirms unlimited data for iPhones, but not so fast
Just in case you missed the news at the end of the conference yesterday, the rumors are all true: Sprint is indeed carrying the iPhone 4S, and a spokesperson for the company confirms Sprint will offer an unlimited data plan for iPhone users. That means if you were one of the many users (myself included) who switched away from Sprint for AT&T way back when the iPhone debuted, you can now consider the option of switching back, at least later on this month when the iPhone 4S debuts.

BT Openreach launching 300Mbps broadband in the UK - high in fibre, low in fat
You've got broadband, right? Are you sure you do? Well, it turns out that the US might well be slipping further down the international 'what speed can you get' tables as UK telecom giant BT Openreach has just fessed up that it will be rolling out a 300Mbps wholesale network as soon as spring 2012. As the network is FTTP, there shouldn't be any more of the old 'up to' claims that have plagued the UK market until now. Also, since it's wholesale, we've got our fingers crossed there

Daily iPad App: iBuild ABCs
iBuild ABCs is a children's game that helps youngsters learn their letters and improve their fine motor skills. It's designed for young children and its gameplay is appropriately simple.
There are 26 letters that are exploded into three to five parts made of different building materials like wood, pipes or steel. The child must build each letter by arranging the parts on a virtual blueprint. Each part of the letter will match the blueprint diagram perfectly and there are holes to help the child line things up. Will Dragon speech apps remain in the app store for iPhone 4 owners?
It was a bit of a shock to learn yesterday that the terrific Siri app, now owned by Apple, will get pulled from the app store. It's being done, I'm sure, to encourage people to get the Siri technology built into the new iPhone 4S. Although an interview with the co-founder of Siri indicated that they had to cut some corners to get the app to work on "older" hardware. Still, it seems, shall we say, small of Apple to kill an app that seemed to work just fine, and did some of the tasks that the new incarnation of Siri will do on the iPhone 4S.

Apple, HP campuses in lockdown after Cupertino shootings
Apple and HP campuses closed off to the outside world on Wednesday after tragic shootings in the Cupertino area, staff confirmed to Wired. CRTC won't regulate Netflix as a broadcaster in Canada
Netflix may be a streaming company, but that doesn't make it a broadcaster -- at least, not in Canada, and not according to the CRTC.
