Volkswagen Nils concept has an HTC Desire HD dashboard, seats one Engadget editor
Audi isn't the only one with a tiny little EV with exposed wheels at Frankfurt this year. Parent company Volkswagen has one too, but this is even smaller. It's called the Nils and it's designed for commuters in the "world of tomorrow" -- commuters who will be very thin and, apparently, short. Big people just don't fit well into this tiny thing, but if you're of modest size or below this could be an interesting little ride. It has only 34-horsepower (25kW) available from a rear-mounted electric motor, but since it weighs just 1,000-pounds (460kg) that should make for some peppy

Apple releases Macbook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.2
Apple has released Macbook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.2 for 2011-model MacBook Pros. The update addresses the same Thunderbolt and OS X Lion Internet Recovery issues as the EFI Firmware Update issued two days ago for 2011-model MacBook Airs.
The 4.17 MB firmware update is available at Apple's site and requires you to ensure that power is not interrupted to your MacBook Pro during the update; firmware updates are Serious Business which, if interrupted, can put your Mac in Very Bad Shape.
Other sites have noted that the recent spate of firmware updates for Thunderbolt-enabled Macs points to the imminent availability of

News: Orange CEO points to iPhone 5 launch on Oct. 15
Stéphane Richard, CEO of Orange, has made comments suggesting that Apple will launch the iPhone 5 on October 15. Hardmac reports that Richard was being interviewed by a French TV business channel when he said that he had received information on the iPhone 5 and its planned release date, which he claimed was October 15. YouTube adds basic video editing
YouTube started its path to handling the full video editing pipeline with a new editing feature. Clips can be edited for basic changes, such as stabilization, brightness, contrast and saturation, but given special effects. The filters brought over from the Picnik buyout mimic those from apps like Instagram or Picplz and range from simple black and white to Lomo-like or cel-shaded effects.

Google Nexus Prime rumored on Verizon near iPhone 5
The first official phone running Android's Ice Cream Sandwich update, alternately called the Google Nexus Prime or Samsung Droid Prime, may ship to Verizon roughly in sync with the iPhone 5. A rumor from a reported Verizon corporate worker claims that the flagship should be available "around [the] release of iPhone 5." He also told Droid-Life that there weren't indications at his level of the Droid badging reserved for Verizon-only phones, although he didn't rule it out.

New iOS multitasking concept video
Apple fan Marcos Antonio de Lima Filho has mocked up a concept video demonstrating alternate multitasking-behavior for iOS devices. Instead of the single row of recently-accessed apps, Marcos' video shows two rows of app icons, top and bottom, with a pane of "workspaces" between them.
Users can swipe between app icons as they do now or between windows of running applications. Additionally, apps that aren't running can be assigned to empty "workspaces" with a drag-and-drop.

Sony releases its first iPad dock
Sony has announced its first speaker docking station for the iPad. The RDP-X500IP dock, which is also compatible with the iPhone and iPod touch, features Magnetic Fluid speakers that deliver, according to Sony, higher sound pressure with less distortion than traditional speakers. Family transportation has come a long way since it was all about piling in the back of the humble station wagon -- in particular, we're talking about the new Mercedez-Benz Concept B-Class E-Cell Plus EV that debuted today at the Frankfurt Motor Show. iPhone 5 coming to France on Oct. 15th, says Orange CEO
The iPhone 5 will launch on October 15th, says Stéphane Richard, the CEO of French carrier Orange. The executive reportedly made the comment during an interview on a TV business program. Hardmac notes that Richard has let slip similarly secret Apple information in the past, namely about the first-generation iPad; he wrongly stated, though, that the tablet would have a camera. Investigation of the hardware would eventually show space for a camera, suggesting that Apple removed it late into development.

Apple's original MacBook Air may have fit inside a traditional office envelope, but it seems that Intel's got a few tricks up its sleeve, too. Daily iPhone App: Samurai Bloodshow
Sega recently introduced Samauri Bloodshow to the App Store. It's a weird mix of strategy and action. It's a samurai game, of course, so you're controlling samurai warriors in feudal Japan. And the actual game mechanic is sort of Plants vs. Zombies or tower defense-inspired -- you place troops out on a board, where they stand in place until enemies show up, at which point they cut them down as quickly as possible.
But the mechanic of how you lay the troops down is the weird thing -- there's a sort of collectible card game feel to it. IDT's power-saving Panel Self Refresh tech coming to laptops, Ultrabooks and tablets (video)
We aren't talking Pixel Qi-style savings or anything, but then again, IDT's not asking you to ditch the conventional LCD your retinas refuse to step away from. Apple revised South Korea's iPhone warranty
The South Korean Fair Trade Commission has said that customers who receive defective iPhones can exchange them for non-refurbished models, Bloomberg reports. This reflects a change to Apple's iPhone warranty in that country.
Apple has given phones refurbished with new parts to customers in that situation. Owners complained that Apple's policy states they may receive refunds, new phones or free repairs. Now a customer who meets the criteria may choose which option s/he would like to receive. If a new phone is the choice, that customer will receive a brand-new iPhone, not one containing refurbished parts.

SanDisk hat eine neue Produktkategorie ausgetüftelt: Speicher für die digitale Ewigkeit. Jedenfalls sollen die Memory Vault getauften USB-Flash-Speicher Fotos und andere Memorabilia "bis zu" 100 Jahre lang bereitstellen - dahinter steckt dann eine SanDisk-Technik namens "Chronolock Memory Management", die in der Klimakammer auf Herz und Nieren getestet worden sein soll. Das Gehäuse des USB-Sticks wird als besonders robust angepriesen, für uns sieht es eher nach Plastik aus, das die Schildkröte macht. Windows 8 BSoD ditches confusing error codes for uninformative frowny face
As with any version of Windows, the Metro-slathered Win 8 has one of those oh so familiar Blue Screen of Death thingies. But, this time around, there's a change. Gone are the confusing and uninformative error codes, and in its place you get an equally uninformative sad emoticon. OK, there's also some text informing you that your PC is about to reboot, but it still doesn't get you any closer to tracking down the root of the problem. Well, at least it's little less cutesy than the Sad Mac (though, no less infuriating).

Bologna, Glasgow join list of weekend Apple Store openings
Two more Apple Stores are set to open this weekend, making for a total of four, checks show. The first is based in Bologna, Italy, and will launch on the ground floor of a building in Via Rizzoli in the city's center. The historic structure has reportedly had its façade renovated, and should give Apple better coverage in northern half of the country.

UK ad authority says iPhone 4 slimmer than Galaxy S II
Samsung suffered a minor but symbolic loss to Apple on Wednesday after the UK's Advertising Standards Authority rejected a Samsung request. The independent regulator denied Samsung's attempts to have Apple pull its "world's thinnest smartphone" claim for the iPhone 4 on the grounds that the Galaxy S II was thinner. While most of the Android phone's body is thinner at 8.7mm, the bottom bulge for the speaker and the top one for the camera made it considerably thicker at 9.9mm and didn't beat Apple's consistent 9.3mm.

IDC: iPad actually gained share after Android tablets
Apple managed to gain market share in tablets at the very time that many of its new competitors were supposed to be taking that share away, IDC said Wednesday. Having full access to data from the past spring, it found that the iPad had gained share, moving up from 65.7 percent at the start of the year to 68.3 percent. Multiple Android tablets' arrivals only led to Google's share shrinking, dropping from 34 percent in early 2011 to 26.8 percent mid-year.

Foxconn's Brazilian factory begins iPad assembly
Brazil's minister of science and technology, Aloizio Mercadante, has announced that a new Foxconn factory in Jundiaí is complete and already producing iPads, reports note. Kensington SecureBack case keeps iPads safe
Kensington extended its range of computer security products by introducing a new SecureBack case for the iPad 2. The case cradles the iPad 2 and provides it with a ClickSafe Security Anchor that's used on Kenisngton's other protective products.
The product targets companies that are handing out iPads to their employees and want to prevent the loss of sensitive data. The cases are also designed to provide access to all the ports, speakers and buttons. It does appear to add some bulk to the slim profile of the iPad, but its a necessary tradeoff for increased security. Pricing for the entry level SecureBack case starts at US$49.99.

Sony tackled its home audio in multiple directions Wednesday, starting with two iOS speaker docks. Apple prepares to open 5th store in China
According to M.I.C. Gadget, Apple is close to opening yet another flagship store in China. The retail store is located in one of Shanghai's most popular shopping districts and supposedly has five stories of retail space. The store was expected to open in August but construction problems delayed the launch.
Though a date has not yet been set, the store is nearing its grand opening. The red curtain covering the store has been opened to reveal a large Apple logo and the promise that Apple will "light up Nanjing road." Workers have also been spotted wheeling in crates that presumably contain merchandise, decorations and other items for the store.

China Telecom reportedly has 'Dragon Plan' to sell iPhone 5
China Telecom may have an all-out marketing campaign for its iPhone 5 launch if details given by a purported corporate insider. Eine Lösung die wir für Laptops schon lange haben, aber aufgrund des Formfaktors des iPad einfach ziemlich albern aussieht. Neues MacBook Pro mit stärkerer CPU noch im September erhältlich?
Noch in diesem Monat will Apple ein neues MacBook Pro mit besseren Prozessoren auf den Markt bringen, das berichtet zumindest „Appleinsider“. Der Grund: Intel hängt mit der Produktion der neuen Intel Core i-Prozessoren (Ivy Bridge) hinterher und könnte diese frühestens im zweiten Quartal 2012 anbieten. So lange will Apple anscheinend nicht warten.
Ein komplettes Update für das neue MacBook Pro ist dabei aber nicht in Planung. Vielmehr plane Apple nur ein Leistungsupdate, während sich an der Optik oder Gehäusematerialien des beliebten Notebooks nichts ändern soll. Ein exakter Termin für das neue MacBook Pro ist zwar noch nicht bekannt, doch wenn es nach dem Appleinsider-Informaten geht, dürfen wir uns noch im September auf eine Aktualisierung freuen. Adieu Univa: LG Optimus Hub jetzt offiziell

Neulich hatten wir es noch im Leak als LG Univa, jetzt ist es offiziell das LG Optimus Hub. Der Mid-Level Android kommt mit 5 Megapixel Kamera bleibt aber bei VGA Video in 24fps, Quad-Band GSM, HSDPA bis 3,6Mbps. Na endlich wissen wir wann die neue PlayStation Vita wirklich rauskommt, denn die Pressekonferenz ist gerade beendet worden. Am 17. Dezember in Japan. Das scheint nicht nur uns sehr knapp für ein Release zu Weihnachten sondern offiziell wird es nichts. Dort wird sie mit NTT DoCoMo als 3G-Partner erscheinen und zwei Optionen haben für den Zugang: 980 ¥ für 20 Stunden und 4.980 Y für 100 Stunden. Apple has agreed to make changes in its customer-service policies on iPhones sold in that country so that customers -- not Apple -- will choose from options when an iPhone is defective, Bloomberg reports. 360iDev: Lessons from the design of Postage
Developer Chris Parrish hosted a talk this week here at 360iDev in Denver looking back on the development of Postage, RogueSheep's Apple Design Award-winning virtual postcard designer and sharing app for the iPhone. Sony's just announced in Tokyo that the PlayStation Vita will debut in Japan on December 17th, and it'll partner with NTT DoCoMo for the console's 3G service. Customers will have two choices of connection here: 980 yen for 20-hour prepaid data plan, and 4,980 yen for 100-hour prepaid data plan. iOS 5 Golden Master bereits am 23.September?
Über kaum ein Produkt werden derzeit so viele Gerüchte verbreitet wie über die neuste Generation des iPhones. Doch dabei ist nicht einmal der Name des iPhone 4 Nachfolgers wirklich sicher, Apple hielt sich bisher sehr bedeckt und gab keinerlei Auskünfte zu Produktentwicklungen. Of course, we also visited CEDIA last week so there's plenty to talk about there too, including 4K, ultrawidescreen and more. Google planning opt-out option for WiFi data gathering
Privacy concerns have caused Google to back down a bit on its information collection amongst residential wireless networks. Beginning in the fall, the company will allow owners of the WiFi networks to opt-out of the data gathering. Samsung vs. Apple: Neue Klage und Berufung

Microsoft posts Windows 8 Dev Preview, sets requirements
Ahead of an 11PM Eastern promise, Microsoft has posted the Windows 8 Developer Preview. Intel-based 32-bit (ISO) and 64-bit (ISO) editions are on tap, with an ARM version understandably left out given the lack of hardware. The developer center is also now active with more details.

Turntable.fm iPhone app now in the App Store, but the service still isn't fully open
The good news: There's finally an app for Turntable.fm. The bad news? You're probably not going to get to use it. Turntable.fm still requires you to be invited via Facebook by someone who is already using the service. This is probably a good thing from a scale point of view, but I think Turntable.fm may have worse things to worry about when it does open the floodgates.
Turntable.fm is a mix between streaming music service, chat room and ultimately, videogame. If you try to be a DJ, you'll enter a room and essentially compete against other DJs to have your playlist selections played in the room. Mac Mini Vault debuts optimized 48U cabinet for i7 Minis
Mac Mini Vault, a co-location facility in Wisconsin just north of Chicago, has debuted a customized 48U APC Netshelter cabinet configured to hold up to 140 current-design Mac minis, with the quad-core i7 Mac mini server particularly in mind. The Minis are mounted vertically on specially-designed shelves in a cabinet with six APC switched Power Distribution Units (PDUs) for remote power cycling if necessary, backed up by uninterruptible power supplies and a generator.

Bell LTE 4G goes live Wednesday, echoes Rogers plans
Bell on Wednesday will become the second Canadian carrier to formally launch an LTE-based 4G (link active soon) service. Going live first in the Golden Triangle area in and around Toronto, the service will echo the same 75Mbps peak, 12Mbps to 25Mbps real-world speeds seen on Rogers. Bell's edge will be its support for 42Mbps HSPA+ as a 'fallback' with Rogers' service at a more modest 21Mbps.

Doweet aims to make real life activities more social
The very first pitch I got at TechCrunch Disrupt was from the Israeli founders of Doweet, a simple but ambitious iPhone app. Doweet ties into Facebook to share and discuss real life events. Why? Well, the purpose isn't exactly clear other than some rather bold marketing speak purporting to "revolutionize the way we do things together." I'm not sure about that, but here's what Doweet does.

Windows 8 matches Lion with 'Retina' display, adds Xbox Live
Microsoft in sessions and talks following its Windows 8 preview has confirmed that its OS will have very high resolution display support. Developers are being asked to produce 100 percent, 140 percent, and 180 percent resolutions for artwork in anticipation of 250DPI and higher "HD" screens. The hardware itself should arrive within the "next couple of years," Steve Troughton-Smith heard during one session, but the OS had to be ready in advance.

Apple wins 3D patent for Kinect-like gesture navigation
Apple has, over the years, patented a number of ideas that dealt at least on some level with 3D interfaces, but today's patent for a projected "image area" where 3D manipulation could be realized emanating out of future mobile devices -- if practical for the company to implement -- could have major implications for future gaming, interfaces and other user interactions, going beyond the movement-sensing technologies of devices like Microsoft's Kinect, reports Patently Apple.

Xbox Live functionality confirmed for Windows 8
Microsoft today re-confirmed that it will be bringing Xbox Live functionality to PCs -- a move that will come courtesy of the newly showcased Windows 8. Build a Train is a train simulation application for young children from one to six-years old. I happen to have a few kids at home and tested it out initially with my four-year-old.
The Build a Train game is optimized for children. It has large buttons, bouncy background music and bright, colorful graphics. The child begins the game by choosing their train, cars and map before entering the track. There's a variety of trains that you can build and ten different maps.

Dish Network satellite 129 outage knocks out HD channels nationwide
If your Dish Network-connected TV is claiming total signal loss, then at least take comfort in the fact that you're not alone. While the company hasn't revealed exactly what the problem is, Facebook and Twitter posts indicate a "technical issue" with satellite location 129. Parrot outs MiniKit+ dual-phone bluetooth hands-free device
Bluetooth accessory maker Parrot has announced the latest addition to its MiniKit line of hands-free Bluetooth smartphone car kits with the MiniKit+, which can handle two Bluetooth mobile phones simultaneously and pair with up to 10 such phones, storing up to 2,000 synchronized contacts with each. The kit, which will arrive in October, assigns different bell tones to each of the two phones in use, and both speaks the names of incoming calls and lets drivers accept or reject calls by voice.

A look at Jeff Williams, Tim Cook's right-hand man
Fortune has posted a brief profile of Jeff Williams, Apple's senior vice president of operations. Describing him as "Tim Cook's Tim Cook," Fortune's piece notes that Williams joined Apple in 1998 as head of worldwide procurement and was responsible for a US$1.25 billion deal with flash memory manufacturers that helped make the iPod nano a (very successful and very lucrative) reality.

Bizness Apps makes simple mobile apps for your small business
I'm here at TechCrunch Disrupt checking out the startups and have stumbled upon a few interesting companies. Bizness Apps has been around for a short while (they didn't launch here, as some companies have) that aims to provide a simple, web-based app building system for small businesses. It's not exactly a template system; Bizness Apps provides a series of functional components which you can plug in to an app and deploy using HTML5, or put on the App Store or Android Market.
