SanDisk working to push SSD power consumption lower, squeeze more juice out of your battery
First things first: we really need to sit down with the tech industry and have a conversation about effectively naming things. Which brings us to our next order of business: SATA DEVSLP. SanDisk is working with other companies, like Intel, Microsoft and Samsung, to develop this new standard which will drive SSD power consumption much lower than current levels. Apple may have another 2011 MacBook Pro update in September
Apple may return to its once frequent pattern of updating computers more than once a year with a second 2011 MacBook Pro refresh, historically accurate tipsters suggested Tuesday. Taking advantage of Intel's recently refreshed Core i5 and i7 mobile processors, the refresh would just be a mild speed upgrade to keep the performance up. The revamp could happen before the end of September, AppleInsider heard.

Foxconn consumer shipments drop ahead of iPhone update
Foxconn's non-consolidated revenues dropped 6.55 percent sequentially in August, amounting to about $7.39 billion US, the Asian manufacturer has announced. The company explains that while shipments of computers and communications devices remained unchanged from July, consumer electronics fell below original expectations. Industry observers contacted by Digitimes suggest that the dip may be linked to lower shipments of the iPhone 4 ahead of a new iPhone model.

Steve Jobs' exit doing little to spook iPad, Mac buyers
Validating common suspicions, a new ChangeWave study suggests that the resignation of Steve Jobs as Apple's CEO has had little impact on buying habits. As of September, his exit was less of a factor than ever in Apple's history since he returned in 1997, with only four percent saying they expected to change their habits. Worries were much higher in June 2008, at 18 percent, just as Apple was releasing the iPhone 3G and had yet to even hint at the iPad.

Verizon intros $50 unlimited plan, takes a swing at pre-paid operators
In a direct shot at its lesser competitors, Verizon Wireless announced today the launch of a new $50 unlimited plan for pre-paid customers. Available starting this Thursday, the unlimited talk, text and web option'll rollout to all of the operator's retail locations, in addition to Walmart, Best Buy and Target. Users who opt for the plan won't get their pick of high-end smartphones, and will, instead, have to choose from a selection of four featurephones from LG, Samsung and Pantech. Microsoft posts Mac updates for Office 2011, Office 2008
Microsoft has released new updates for the 2011 and 2008 editions of Office for Mac. The 2011 update, v14.1.3, solves a bevy of problems, including documents not opening in some browsers. The bulk of fixes appear to be directed at Outlook, targeting issues such as contact images not displaying in the Contacts Search box. The email client has had import from Mail disabled under Lion, however, since the option "does not work as expected" under Apple's new OS, according to Microsoft.

Turntable.fm gets iPhone app, $7m in funding
Online music service for DJs, Turntable.fm, has just showed up in the form of an iPhone app (free, App Store). The company behind it has also received $7 million in funding led by Union Square Ventures. Turntable started off with three employees and is now at 10.

Apple files motions to stay two Motorola patent lawsuits
Apple has filed motions to stay two of the many back-and-forth patent lawsuits between it and Motorola. Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents has a rundown of the entire legal argument, but the gist is that Apple claims the terms of the acquisition deal between Google and Motorola mean Motorola no longer has the authority to assert its patents against Apple.

Apple working on official iOS scanner app?
Apple is working on a first-party scanning app for iOS, a source with the company alleges. In the same style as third-party offerings, the app is said to require a person to hold an iPhone over a document or other object with text and take a photo. The image is then resized to a standard document size, with edge alignment as necessary. A user can manually adjust the size or use of the content.

Apple adds Quick Reads section to iBookstore, promotes short e-books
Apple has added a new "Quick Reads" section to the iBookstore, promoting short, inexpensive titles. The collection includes everything from manuals to short stories, each selling for US$5 or less.
Amazon has featured short (typically 5,000 words or so), inexpensive titles as "Kindle Singles" for some time at approximately the same price point. It's unclear if Apple's Quick Reads are a direct response to Amazon's efforts, for if it's experimenting with brief, low-cost titles.
If you've got an iPad and an inclination towards a book you can finish in a sitting, you might find one to suit your fancy there.

Samsung appeals Apple's German ban on Galaxy Tab
Samsung as anticipated has appealed Apple's successful ban on Galaxy Tabs in Germany. The Korean firm didn't outline the grounds on which it would appeal the decision but is expected to argue that Apple's community designs for tablets are too generic. In issuing the ban, the Dusseldorf-based judge had claimed that there were other tablet designs possible than what the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was based on.

LG Optimus Hub officially outed as successor to Optimus One dynasty (video)
Well, LG's gone ahead and made the successor to the Optimus One all official-like. The device you've previously known as the Univa (E510) has been renamed as the Optimus Hub, and it's set to arrive in Italy next month for €199 off-contract. The specs remain the same since we first peered at the handset, though we're now able to fill in some additional gaps. Intel shows off Medfield-based Android tablet at IDF 2011, we (briefly) go eyes-on
Much in the same vein as the smartphone showed off this morning, Intel also teased a Medfield-based Android tablet. But unlike the prototype Andy Rubin whisked with him off stage, we were able to at least get up close and personal with its Intel inside sibling. Unfortunately we weren't able to actaully touch the thing, but here's to hoping we can track one down and do a proper hands-on at some point today.

Google must let Wi-Fi routers escape location track
Google, bowing to pressure to European authorities, has said that it will be providing a service that will allow an access point owner to opt out from Google's location services. This follows months of scrutiny and pressure from several European regulatory agencies after it was revealed that the search engine giant collected personal information from individuals' Wi-Fi routers, including MAC addresses, while it was gathering data for its its Street View mapping service. Survey shows iPhone 5 anticipation is high
It's no secret that customers are eagerly awaiting the next iPhone. It's another thing to support that theory with some empirical data.
Philip Elmer-Dewitt points out a survey conducted by ChangeWave last month. The group queried 2,200 potential iPhone customers and found that 31% of participants said they were very/somewhat likely to buy the iPhone 5. That percentage exceeds a similar measure of iPhone 4 pre-launch demand of 25%.
Additionally, 66% of current iPhone owners surveyed said they intend to buy the new version. More than half of Sprint and T-Mobile customers surveyed -- 54% and 53%, respectively -- said they are significantly/more likely to buy an iPhone if those carrie

Logitech Wireless Touchpad hits Windows PCs this month for $50
Windows 8 may be embracing touch in a big way, but Logitech now also has a little something for those looking to make their Windows 7 PC a bit more multitouch-friendly. Ivy-Bridge-GPU bis zu 60 Prozent schneller als SB

Jetpack Joyride hits 350k downloads, releases free update
I think that Halfbrick's latest title, Jetpack Joyride (formerly known as Machine Gun Jetpack), is one of the best games I've played this year, and apparently I'm not the only person who ran to pick it up -- the game has earned over 350,000 downloads in the short time it's been available. To celebrate, the company is dropping a new free update for the game today, featuring a brand new vehicle called Mr. Cuddles (which happens to be a fire-breathing dragon), a "fruit jetpack" based on Halfbrick's popular Fruit Ninja title, and a new skin featuring "Honest Phil," a character designed after Halfbrick's real-life Chief Marketing Officer Phil Larsen.

Windows 8 details: new features, UI enhancements and everything in between
Today, Windows Division prexy Steven Sinofsky treated Build 2011 attendees to a walkthrough of the various tweaks, subtle or otherwise, Microsoft's made to Windows 8. Belkin demos Thunderbolt Express Dock at IDF
Belkin used the added limelight of the Intel Developer Forum to show off a prototype of a Thunderbolt dock intended primarily for Mac owners. Just called the Thunderbolt Express Dock, it has much of the same expansion of Apple's Thunderbolt Display without the requisite screen. A single cable feeds out gigabit Ethernet, FireWire 800, three USB ports, and another Thunderbolt port for adding more devices to a chain.

Closed captioned TV episodes appearing in iTunes
AppleInsider reports that some TV studios are beginning to add closed captioning to their shows on iTunes. As of this writing, captions are showing up on "Sons of Anarchy," "New Girl" and "The Secret Circle." The update is limited to episodes from the current season of these shows.
Apple TV has offered closed captioning for many movies for quite some time, and Netflix, which is available through Apple TV, does as well. To enable closed captioning on the Apple TV, go to Settings > Video. There you'll see the option to toggle the service on or off.

Filesharing service sues Warner Bros. for copyright fraud
The battle over software and video piracy took a turn yesterday when a Florida file hosting service sued Warner Brothers for allegedly engaging in copyright fraud and abuse of anti-piracy laws. Hotfile accuses the Warner Bros. of using the hosting company's anti-piracy tools to remove titles the studio doesn't own, including open source software. Hotfile is asking a court to make it whole for the losses they claim Warner Bros. caused.

Sprint briefing workers on October iPhone 4 launch?
Sprint officials have started briefing workers on an imminent launch of the iPhone 4, an anonymous salesperson with the company claims. People are reportedly being told that the phone will launch on Sprint next month, using standard data plans. These should include a $10 charge imposed on smartphone data.

Windows 8 developer preview: when and where to download
Got a brain full of Windows 8? Can't stop obsessing about it? Fret not -- as of 8PM PT this evening (just under eight hours from now), you'll be able to download a copy of the Windows Developer Preview to your machine from dev.windows.com. Per usual, we'd recommend doing so on a separate partition (or a spare machine altogether) in order to prevent unforeseen conflicts, and we'd also suggest having a stiff glass of patience waiting nearby. Intel Haswell chip to run notebooks 24 hours on one charge
Intel at its Developer Forum provided more details about its Haswell processor foundation for 2013. Although 22 nanometers like the Ivy Bridge design due early next year, it will be much more power efficient than an existing chip. The company plans for a 30 percent reduction in active power use over a modern Core i5 and that notebooks could last a complete 24 hours on a charge without needing extended cells, competing with ARM tablets.

Samsung Windows 8 Dev Preview PC boots in 3 seconds with 3G
As expected, Microsoft at Build gave away 5,000 units of a special edition of the Samsung Slate PC Series 7 tablet to show off the Windows 8 Developer Preview. The 11.6-inch Windows Developer Preview PC tablet has been upgraded to take advantage of the new OS with the appropriate sensors. Virgin America and Lufthansa Systems unveil new in-flight entertainment system coming in 2012
Alright, so in-flight entertainment systems aren't exactly the sort of thing that people camp out for days to get first crack at. Intel demos Haswell-enabled, solar-powered computing at IDF 2011
During the IDF keynote today in San Francisco, Intel demoed a solar-powered PC running Windows based on its long-teased Haswell microarchitecture -- complete with labcoats and LOLcats. Microsoft shows Windows 8 on existing Ultrabooks, acts like it's never seen a thin laptop before
The majority of first-gen Ultrabooks aren't on sale yet -- not even with Windows 7 -- but Microsoft's already showing off tomorrow's best and brightest with Windows 8. Microsoft gives Samsung Windows 8 developer PCs to Build attendees, AT&T throws in 3G service
It's just not a developer conference these days without a big giveaway, and Microsoft's now come through on that front at Build. The company announced that it's giving away 5,000 Samsung-built developer "PCs" to attendees, and that AT&T will throw in a year of 3G service (2GB per month) for good measure. And, yes, if you haven't noticed, Microsoft is intent on calling every Windows 8 device a "PC," even including tablets. In this case, that PC comes complete with a second-gen Intel Core i5 processor, an 11.6-inch 1,366 x 768 Samsung Super PLS display, a 64GB SSD, 4GB of RAM, and a dock with a USB, HDMI and Ethernet ports.

Microsoft demos NFC-based tap-to-share for Windows 8 devices

Microsoft at its Build conference showed off a Developer Preview with a much more complete view of Windows 8's interface than it showed in June. The new OS is built to uniquely take advantage of multitasking and has a new option for "dockable" apps: every Windows 8-native app has both a full-size and docked mode that lets them run side-by-side, such a social networking app next to a video. AppleCare workers are being told to be prepare for a surge of iOS-related questions starting on Monday, October 10th, a source claims. In particular, the person tells AppleInsider that his local AppleCare call center is being instructed to expect eight times as much traffic. Windows 8 Store to sell both Metro-style apps and conventional Win32 programs
Oh, sure -- you've already started digging into the upcoming Windows Store (or, at least what it'll deliver), but Microsoft just revealed a cute little nugget about its future functionality here at Build 2011. In keeping with its mantra of making Windows 8 a one-size-fits-all affair, the Store will be home to both Metro-style apps (useful for tablets and desktops alike) as well as traditional Win32 programs. You know, like Quicken. The outfit is hoping for this to provide more visibility for the programs that we all grew up on, and so long as the categorization is under control, we're all for it.

MacBook Air, Mac mini drive strong Q3 sales
The NPD group released its sales data for the current quarter and things are looking good for Apple. Mac sales are up 22% year-over-year due primarily to the release of OS X Lion and new MacBook Air and Mac Mini hardware in July.

Sprint begins briefing sales associates on iPhone 4 for October launch
A Sprint Nextel sales associate told TUAW that the carrier has started briefing its employees on an imminent Sprint iPhone 4 launch.

Next-gen iPhone demand 'unprecedented,' says RBC
Demand for a next-generation iPhone has reached "unprecedented" levels, claims RBC analyst Mike Abramsky, citing survey results produced by RBC in tandem with ChangeWave. 2,200 people were polled between August 2nd and the 10th; within that group, 31 percent said they were likely to buy a next-gen iPhone. IAA: BMW fährt Elektromodel i3 und Hybridauto i8 über die Bühne

Angry Birds hits 350 million downloads
Angry Birds continues its explosive growth. Almost 21 months after its December 2009 launch, the bird-flinging game now boasts of 350 million downloads and over 300 million minutes of gameplay each day. Samsung files French patent complaint against Apple
Samsung and Apple continue to fight a heated legal battle overseas. In the latest skirmish, Samsung filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Apple in France. The complaint claims Apple violates three UMTS patents held by the Korean company. UMTS is a 3G technology used on GSM-based cellular networks.
Samsung targets Apple's 3G-capable mobile devices including the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and the 3G-capable iPad models. The complaint was filed in Paris District Court and the first hearing is scheduled for December.

White House clears the way for net neutrality protection
The White House Office of Management and Budget approved the Federal Communication Commission's proposed net neutrality rules on Friday, setting the stage for a certain court challenge by wireless broadband providers. Amphibischer Wohnwagen-Hybrid Sealander kommt 2012

Der deutsche Designer Daniel Straub hat ein amphibisches Wohnwagenkonzept ausgetüftelt, das beim Caravan Salon 2011 bereits eine große Welle machte und jetzt in Produktion gehen soll: 2012 soll das Sealander getaufte Vehikel dann für rund 15.000 Euro zu haben sein. Dafür bekommt man dann einen Wohnwagen mit flexibler Inneneinrichtung, abknöpfbarem Dach und Elektro-Außenbordmotor, der "die führerscheinfreie Anwendung auf fast allen Binnengewässern" ermöglichen soll. Die Ausstattung beinhaltet ein Koch-Waschmodul, eine Kühlbox und eine Heizung, womit der Sealander auf ein Gewicht von 380 Kilogramm kommt.

comScore: Android past iPhone in Europe, but Apple still up
Android is now just past the iPhone in European smartphone market share, comScore determined in a Tuesday breakdown. Dear Aunt TUAW,
When using Finder and viewing files in "details" view, you used to be able in Snow Leopard and "below" to double-click on the file "divider" to automatically expand the file name column to be able to see the entire file or folder name within that folder. In Lion you have to manually drag the divider to be able to see the entire file or folder name. Is there something i can change in the settings within Lion to change it back to the way Snow Leopard worked, when double-clicking the divider would automatically expand the column to see the longest file or folder's name within that folder?

Wacom has announced its largest ever graphics tablet, the Cintiq 24HD. It features a 24-inch H-IPS display with 89° viewing angle and 1920x1200 resolution. Samsung sues Apple in France over 3G in iPhones, iPads
Samsung tried to counter rapidly mounting losses in court on Tuesday by filing a lawsuit against Apple in France. The Parisian complaint alleges that the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and 3G-capable iPads all violate three patents Samsung claims to have for UMTS-based 3G data. Samsung was unusually emphatic in saying the issue was over patents and not the design, which it was unlikely to win given the upheld preliminary ban on its own tablets for an allegedly imitative look last week.

Galaxy Express is a fun little puzzle game that's similar to Chu Chu Rocket or Chuck the Ball. There's a cute metagame story in this app with some well-written dialogue, but the core game has you pushing a little astronaut around a starfield using some arrows that you place out on the game screen. Put arrows in the right places, hit go, and the little astronaut will follow your rules exactly, hopefully leading him to make his delivery on the destination planet.
It's simple stuff, and the difficulty doesn't ramp up too quickly, though by the end of the game's 120 puzzles there

IAA: Mercedes Benz zeigt Wasserstoff-Flügeltürer F125!

Auf der internationalen Automobil Ausstellung in Frankfurt (IAA) zeigen die Designer der Konzerne dann wieder geballt, was sie so drauf haben, aber nie den schnöden Konsumentenmarkt erreichen wird. Zum Beispiel der Mercedes Benz F125!, ein Wasserstoff-Flügeltürer im Ganzkörpersilber-Design. Das Gefährt soll 220 km/h machen, in 4,9 Sekunden von Nul auf 100 beschleunigen und dabei 0,79 Kilo Wasserstoff auf 100 Kilometer verbrauchen, was ihm dann eine Reichweite von runden 1000 Kilometern mit einer Tankladung ermöglicht - aber Wasserstofftankstellen sind ja auch nicht an jeder Ecke zu finden.

BMW unveils concept Husqvarna electric motorcycle
There just aren't enough electric motorcycles in the world at this point, so thank goodness BMW just introduced a new one into the world. It's a slinky thing, with a single front fork and a spindly rear swingarm, two features that don't make it look particularly trail-ready -- despite the Husqvarna branding. Morgan Stanley: Apple should buy back some shares
Analyst Katy Huberty with Morgan Stanley has issued a note to investors with the firm's belief that Apple is "more likely than ever" to pursue a course of share buy-backs or increased dividends to shareholders, noting that Apple's projected cash reserves over the new few years are "significantly more" than the company needs, AppleInsider reports. They're some fairly bold claims, but a team of researchers at the University of Leeds say they've managed to develop a new type of polymer gel that could lead to batteries that are safer, cheaper to manufacture and more flexible than traditional lithium-ion batteries. Developer Gareth Jenkins's talk at 360iDev this week in Denver was about designing games specifically for the iPad. He made the distinction early on about two reasons you would design games (or apps) for the iPad. First, they're either iPad-supported, such as a game you designed elsewhere but are bringing to the iPad. You heard right -- The Big N's own Satoru Iwata just announced that a "Misty Pink" Nintendo 3DS console would be shipping (at least in Japan) on October 20th. Funnily enough, that was just after showing a chart proving that right around half of all DS gamers are ladies. (But Iwata -- what if the dudes dig pink, too?) At any rate, no specific price was mentioned, giving us some level of certainty that no premium will be attached.

HTC's American president Martin Fichter touched on his earlier interview with a rare follow-up elaborating on his position. He claimed that he not only didn't see HTC setting out to make an "iPhone killer" but that he actively discouraged the idea in the office. Cook: Apple may return some MobileMe features to iCloud
Representatives from new Apple CEO Tim Cook's office recently called a customer who sent an e-mail bemoaning the forthcoming loss of certain sync services and iDisk in the transition to this fall's iCloud service, and was told that the company would consider adding back some of the lost features "if there's enough feedback on the subject," AppleInsider reports. Feral to produce Mac-native version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Feral has announced that it will release a Mac-native version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Already available for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, the Mac-compatible version will be released this winter.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a prequel to the original Deus Ex, released in 2000 for the Mac and other platforms. The game has already received widespread critical acclaim, so its release for the Mac will come as welcome news for series fans who haven't bought it for one of the consoles (or anyone like me who's recently had their console die on them -- to the last I will grapple with thee, Sony).

Wacom's Cintiq 24HD spied early
Wacom's largest-ever tablet display, the Cintiq 24HD, has been sighted before an actual unveiling. The screen wlil run a 1920x1200, H-IPS display that will give it 92 percent of the Adobe RGB color space and the wide viewing angles associated with IPS displays. Macworld's tips to make OS X Lion's iCal less annoying
The changes made to iCal in OS X Lion have definitely been polarizing, and even some of the novice Mac users I know have found some of them questionable. The word "fugly" has come up more than once when discussing iCal's new faux-leather trim, an interface choice that makes a little more sense on the iPad than it does on the Mac. Apple wants Motorola lawsuits stayed due to Google deal
Apple on Friday used Google's own strategy against it by motioning to try and stop Motorola's countersuits. The filings in both Florida and Wisconsin courts argues that Google's $12.5 billion buyout of Motorola has resulted in a "fundamental loss" of rights for Motorola in the meantime. Google's terms allegedly limit Motorola's ability to enforce patents and make deals in a way that, even if Apple won, could be overturned once Google takes ownership of patents and legal controls.

Santa Ana-based Markzware has announced an upgrade to its file utility that converts Quark Xpress documents to InDesign documents, Q2ID v5.5 -- now able to convert Quark files up to and including version 9 into Adobe InDesign (versions CS4, CS5 or CS5.5). Mercedes-Benz's hydrogen-powered F125! concept slips out ahead of Frankfurt
Mercedes-Benz is certainly no stranger to hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles, and it looks like the automaker is now about to show off its latest concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show. That's dubbed the F125! (apparently pronounced F one twenty FIVE), and it promises a top speed of 137 miles per hour, 0 to 62 in 4.9 seconds, and 100 kilometers on 0.79 kilograms of hydrogen (or 621 miles on a full tank). Apparently, the concept is also intended to demonstrate the design direction for 2025 CL-Class, although there's no indication as of yet that Mercedes-Benz plans to put a hydrogen-powered CL-Class into production. Dolphin Browser HD arrives for iPad, features gestures
Although the alternative web browser Dolphin has been available for the the iOS platform for almost two weeks, an iPad-native version has just been released for free on the iTunes App Store. Dolphin Browser HD includes a number of standout features, such as tabs, sidebars, Webzine mode and gestures. Sinch may have simple fix for untangled headphone cords
Dune Road Design took an unusual route to solving one of the more common problems of mobile use on Monday through the Sinch. The superficially simple add-on uses magnets to latch on to the headphone jack and is designed to let listeners of smartphones wrap the cord naturally but keep it in place by folding it up. The design, from frog, is clever enough to let users get access to the earbuds with a tug and remove the entire wrapped cord just by pulling it off along with the headphone plug.

NearPics is a clever idea that could be a lot better
I'm always looking for free apps that blend well with my passion for photography. I've been playing with NearPics, a free app from UK developers The Mac Box. The idea is simple. Start the app on your iPhone and photos that have been taken near your location appear in a slide show.
I tried NearPics in Southern Arizona and it worked quite well, bringing up a couple of dozen photos of nearby locations, including some parks, some pictures of a nearby mall, and some nice sunsets. That's as far as it goes, but it could be a lot better. The pictures are sourced from Panaramio.com, not from users of the NearPics app. It would be so much better if I could just use the iP

Must See HDTV (September 12th - 18th)
Summer is coming to an end and that means the disappearance of the few remaining summer TV shows still hanging around on the schedule (LA Ink, we won't miss you). It also means the appears of a certain war movie that takes place in the stars on Blu-ray, and an opportunity for networks like NBC and CW to get some of their fall programming kicked off early. Pentax crams 18x optical zoom into Optio RZ18 point-and-shoot camera

Pentax has just outed a new compact that touts a downright impressive 18x optical zoomer (25-450mm equivalent), with the snooping lens married to a 16 megapixel sensor, a smattering of shake reduction technologies and a 3-inch HVGA LCD 'round back.
