Rdio rolling out free, non-ad-supported version 'in the very near future'
Rdio knows you work hard for your money. That's why the social networky music service announced its intentions to offer users free access to its massive music library without dropping dollar one, turning over a credit card number or getting served up ads, Spotify-style. The company isn't revealing much in the way of details beyond that, only promising that the offer will be made available to all consumers "in the very near future." BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0, Video Store aim to cure RIM woes
RIM during the conference call for its bleak summer quarter confirmed major software efforts to reinvigorate the BlackBerry PlayBook. The company confirmed that the PlayBook 2.0 update was real and that it was planning one, major upgrade instead of trickling out features. The update would include the long-promised native e-mail, calendar, and contacts as well as the Android App Player and BlackBerry Balance, its platform for separating home and work content on the same device.

OpenFeint hires new CEO, Jason Citron leaves
It's the end of an era for one of iOS' biggest ventures -- OpenFeint has hired a new CEO, Naoki Aoyagi, which means company founder Jason Citron is leaving the company to head elsewhere.
OpenFeint, you'll remember, has its roots in an iPhone game called Aurora Feint, which Citron developed a few years ago with co-founder Danielle Cassley (who left the company fairly early on). MasterCard demos Google Wallet, QkR platform for mobile payments
You've most likely heard plenty about NFC-capable smartphones, but little in the way of actual real-world uses for the chip. Apple poised to discontinue iPhone 4 bumper
Apple is on the verge of discontinuing the official iPhone 4 bumper case, at least in its current form, a report indicates. 9to5Mac cites an anonymous source on the matter, providing little other detail. The move would make sense if the next-generation iPhone is switching to tapered edges as believed, although by extension it may imply that Apple is diminishing or completely eliminating the iPhone 4's status in its upcoming lineup. Ngmoco acquires Lionside, maker of sports games on Facebook
iPhone mobile game publisher Ngmoco has confirmed that it has acquired Lionside, the San Fransisco-based maker of social networking sports games on Facebook. Ngmoco is the maker of over 20 popular iPhone games, including Rolando and Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid.
There's no word on how much the acquisition cost the iPhone game maker, but a Ngmoco spokesperson did confirm to InsideMobileApps that it did indeed acquire Lionside. RIM BlackBerry shipments sink to 10.6m, just 200K PlayBooks
RIM faced bleak results for its summer quarter on Thursday with lower device shipments and much lower finances. The company ran below its own BlackBerry targets and delivered just 10.6 million of the phones, half as many as Apple shipped iPhones in the spring. PlayBook shipments not only didn't increase but sank significantly, down to just 200,000 for the quarter.

RIM's Q2 earnings report: $329 million in net income, not enough to fend off critics
The first quarterly earnings report post-Wake Up Call have just been published for Canada's own Research in Motion, and while the cash is still flowing, investors and analysts alike aren't feeling too rosy on the future. Google may spend $500m plus in making YouTube a TV rival
Google's plans to establish TV on YouTube may involve no less than creating a full-fledged alternative to conventional broadcasting, rumors maintained on Thursday. Batman: Arkham Asylum finally coming to Macs on Oct. 13th
Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham Asylum will at last reach Macs on October 13th, port developer Feral Interactive has announced. The Mac version has been a long time in coming; the game originally launched for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in August 2009, and for Windows systems less than a month later. All three of the original platforms will in fact be getting the sequel, Arkham City, on October 18th.

Sprint axes Premier program, no more annual upgrades for Gold customers
Well, hope as you might that it was untrue, Sprint has killed off its Premier program and is putting an end to annual upgrades for Premier Gold customers. Premier subscribers will still be able to take advantage of the perks provided by their accounts through the end of the year, but once the calendar flips to 2012 you'll be thrown back in with the rest of the riffraff. Here's a compelling Kickstarter project that iPad keyboard jockeys will like. The Levitatr keyboard is ready for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. It's a thin aluminum thing at 12.5mm thick and features Bluetooth connectivity and keys that pop up when you need them, and recede when you don't.

Apple ranks second in brand value, study claims
Apple has leaped ahead in rank to become the second most valuable brand in the world, an interim 2011 Brand Finance study claims. Although the worth of a brand is difficult to quantify, Brand Finance's latest metrics put Apple up 33 percent to $39.3 billion. West Virginia's 'Quiet Zone' becomes refuge for those on the run from wireless technology
There's a 13,000-square-mile section of West Virginia known as the Quiet Zone where there's no WiFi, no cell service, and strict regulations placed on any device that could pollute the airwaves. Of the many things I expected my iPad to do, ray tracing was not one of them. The ability to make realistic looking objects with accurate reflections was originally the domain of high end workstations, but over the years it has migrated down to laptop and desktop class computers.

Intel details Near Threshold Voltage Processor, memory cubes
Intel in its third Developer Forum keynote in as many days showed off two long-term future technologies. Bentley offers Mac mini, iPads option for 100,000 euros
Bentley is showcasing a new Apple-centric option in its Mulsanne line of luxury automobiles. The add-on package will install one Mac mini and two iPads in the over-sized V8 Touring car. The Mac mini is hidden in the trunk and connected to an LCD installed on the interior ceiling. The LCD swivels down from the ceiling and sits in between the rear seats. There's even a Magic Trackpad to control the computer.

AT&T to launch LTE 4G on September 18
Stepping outside of usual press releases, AT&T CFO John Stephens at the Merrill Lynch MEC conference set a date for the long promised LTE launch. The 4G network will go live on September 18 in the promised five cities, including Atlanta and Chicago as well as the Texas cities of Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Case-Mate posts images suggesting iPhone 5 design
Accessory maker Case-Mate has published images depicting cases for an alleged iPhone 5 design, reports note. The images are consistent with cases being produced in Asia, showing a phone with a flat back, tapered edges and elongated volume buttons instead of circular ones. Apple reportedly gives China Mobile a "positive answer" regarding 4G LTE iPhone
China Mobile has been upfront about its plans for 4G LTE and its desire to have the iPhone on its wireless network. According to Bloomberg, China Mobile Chairman Wang Jianzhou confirmed the wireless carrier has been in talks with Apple about a 4G LTE handset and has received a positive answer. Apple has a compelling reason to get the iPhone on China Mobile - with over 600 million subscribers, it's the world's largest wireless carrier.

Fisker Karma pushes deliveries back again as it awaits federal emissions certification
It looks like those eager to finally take a Fisker Karma EV home will have to wait a bit longer, again. This time, though, the delay is largely out of the company's hands, as it's simply waiting for final federal certification on emissions regulations before it delivers the first test vehicles to dealers. Powermat and Duracell forming joint venture to 'globalize wireless charging'
Duracell has already been in the wireless charging business for quite a while with its myGrid devices, but it's now about to make a fairly drastic change of course. It's parent company, Proctor & Gamble, announced today with Powermat that the two companies intend to form a new joint venture in an effort to "advance and globalize wireless charging." Archos ships G9 tablets to US from September 20 in price war
Archos commmitted itself to the US launch of its first truly native Android tablets on Thursday with release details for the 80 G9 and 101 G9. The unique eight-inch 80 G9 will be the first and ship September 20 for $299 with Android 3.2, making it one of the least expensive Android 3 tablets in the US. China Mobile says Apple 'positive' on iPhone with TD-LTE
China Mobile and Apple are hoping to "find a solution for close collaboration" on TD-LTE and compatible hardware, specifically an iPhone, according to China Mobile chairman Wang Jianzhou. AT&T to officially deploy its LTE network September 18th

Quantas tests iPad as in-flight entertainment
Starting in October, customers on select Qantas flights will be able to choose an iPad for their in-flight entertainment. The iPads will come with pre-loaded TV shows, movies and music to help pass the time on the plane. Eventually, Qantas hopes to deliver this multimedia content wirelessly so passengers can use their own device to watch in-flight movies and listen music while flying.

Broadcom seen making 'rush orders' from TSMC for iPhone
Apple and Broadcom are likely behind "rush orders" received by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, Bloomberg suggests. TSMC recently announced that third-quarter sales would beat forecasts because of the orders, officially attributed to an unnamed client. The last time we reviewed the Envy 14, we concluded, by and large, that HP got it right. The company succeeded in delivering good performance and graphics punch, all while correcting a teensy overheating problem and adding an optical drive and backlit keyboard. IE10 for Metro Windows to drop plugins, Flash for HTML5
Dean Hachamovithch, Microsoft's Internet Explorer team leader stated in a blog post that the Metro-style version of Internet Explorer 10 will not support Flash or other plugins and will rely on HTML5. Google Goggles war immer schon dafür gedacht Bilder zu erkennen, jetzt (Version 1.6) ist es aber besser in die Android Kamera integriert und sucht - so man denn will - im Hintergrund nach Informationen über das gerade mit der Kamera geschossene Motiv. Denkmäler, wichtige Gebäude und ähnliches sind normalerweise leicht erkannt. Bislang nur in der Android Version. Netflix admits it will lose more customers than predicted, mostly from DVDs
Back in July, after announcing it would decouple unlimited movie streaming from unlimited DVD rentals and charge more to keep both, Netflix predicted it would end up with 25 million subscribers at the end of Q3. This morning it advised investors that prediction has been slashed by 1 million, however most of that shortfall is predicted to come from fewer DVD-only customers than expected, which is expected to come up 800,000 short. Canon followed up its earlier camera intros with two more targeted at its highest-end users. The PowerShot S100 is a sequel to the by now well-known S90 and S95 and is the first camera with the Digic 5 chip. Making the upgrade improves the overall color accuracy, noise reduction, and performance but allows high-speed shooting very rare on a camera: the S100 can get up to 9.6 frames per second, albeit up to eight frames, in a new High-speed Burst HQ mode.

Sprint is implementing sweeping changes to its upgrade and return programs that are likely in anticipation of its iPhone 5 launch. Die ragbare Konsole wird einfach in die Halterung eingesetzt, passt somit zwar nicht mehr wirklich in die Hosentasche, soll sich aber deutlich besser halten lassen. Die Rückseite hat eine deutlich griffigere Oberfläche. Hauptaugenmerk liegt natürlich auf dem zusätzlichen Gamepad, das zum Glück beim Spielen nicht beim Zugriff auf die weiteren Knöpfe im Wege steht.

A Jewish developer of an app called "Jew or Not Jew?" has found his app removed from the App Store in France following a complaint from a French anti-racism group that threatened legal action. Nintendo may be AWOL on the TGS show floor (as usual), but that's not stopping Capcom from strutting the big-N's hardware in its stead -- we dropped by its booth for a gameplay-free handling of the 3DS extended slide pad add-on. The control-extending cradle is every bit as bulky as it looks, killing any hope we had of cramming the rig into our pocket. The trade-off? Yamaha updates AV Controller Android app for its networked devices
Yamaha is now ready to shout about its updated AV Controller app for Android, which it quietly launched on the Market a couple of weeks back. It lets you power up and control networked AV receivers from your phone or tablet, including switching inputs and selecting media from iPods and other devices connected to the receiver via USB. It also provides limited play, stop and forward control over compatible Blu-ray players. OCZ announces slimmer 7.5mm SSD, confirms one resides in LG's P220 ultraportable
LG's P220 ultraportable has been making the rounds since Computex in June, but OCZ has only just now confirmed that it's using a fairly special new 2.5-inch SSD from the company. Unlike traditional 2.5-inch laptop drives that measure 9.5mm thick, this new "custom designed" drive measures just 7.5mm in height, which makes it about 25 percent slimmer. So far only the 128GB variety included in the P220 has been confirmed, but OCZ indicates that it's just the first of more LG laptops to use the new drives. Press release is after the break.

Vocre provides live iPhone-to-iPhone translation
myLanguage chose late Wednesday to unveil a take on translation for the iPhone that promised near real-time translation. Vocre (free, App Store). The app uses Nuance's speech recognition to automatically convert dialog from one language into another without having to toggle a microphone or type by hand. A special adaptive engine helps avoid the robotic sound of competing services like Google Translate.

Survey shows Steve Jobs's absence not deterring Apple's customers
A ChangeWave survey suggests Steve Jobs's resignation as CEO of Apple will have little impact on the future sales of Apple hardware. Between September 6 and 12, ChangeWave surveyed 2,297 respondents and found that only 4% of people would be less likely to buy Apple products now that Jobs is gone. 89% said Jobs resignation will have little to no effect on their future purchasing decisions.
These results are not surprising at this point.The iPhone and iPad are market leaders and the rest of Apple's product lineup is robust. And it's not like Jobs has completely left the company, he is still actively involved in Apple as Chairman of the Board.

Sharp FX Plus venturing beyond Walmart this month, we go hands-on

Intel Cactus Ridge to power Thunderbolt on 2012 Macs, PCs
Intel in one of the side notes from its Developer Forum presentations has outlined the Thunderbolt controllers that will drive computers based on Ivy Bridge processors. Cactus Ridge will mostly be a refresh of the Light Ridge and Eagle Ridge chips used in current Macs. As such, the high-end Cactus Ridge chip will have four channels that each have a symmetric 10Gbps and two DisplayPort links, while the budget version will have just two of those channels and one DisplayPort link.

Sprint shone some light on the latest mystery handset from LG earlier today -- and what a bright light it is indeed. Taito is making its own iPad arcade cabinet
First ThinkGeek's iCade went from joke concept to real product, then Atari introduced its own iPad gaming controller. Now Taito, maker of legendary video game Space Invaders, is joining the fray with the InvaderCade. GameSetWatch reports the cabinet has only a single button and a ball-top joystick for controls, but the InvaderCade also serves as a charging dock with stereo speakers and a headphone jack.
The InvaderCade is coming to Japan on October 11 -- no word on a US release as of yet -- and its launch price in Japan will be around US$205. It'

Password manager mSecure reaches v3.0, adds cloud syncing
Portland, Oregon-based mSeven Software has announced the launch of mSecure 3.0, a cross-platform password and security manager for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android systems. The new version offers 17 pre-categorized groups for passwords, as well as the ability to generate new custom groups and favorites for fast access. European Union extends Beatles' copyright, still gonna have to buy the White Album
If you've been waiting for the hits of the '60s to lapse into the public domain, prepare to be disappointed. The European Union has agreed to extend the term of protection for sound recordings -- which previously lasted for 50 -- to 70 years. That means the White Album won't be free to own until 2038. UK's Advertising Standards Authority rules iPhone 4 is thinnest
Apple has gained another victory over Samsung, though this one has nothing to do with patents. The UK's Advertising Standards Authority has ruled that the iPhone 4 is indeed the thinnest smartphone in the country. Apple refers to the iPhone 4 as the "thinnest" smartphone in UK ads. That's something Samsung said was false advertising because their Galaxy S II smartphone is 8.71mm at its thinnest, while Apple's iPhone 4 is 9.3mm at it's thinnest.
However the ASA sided with Apple in the dispute, citing that though the Galaxy S II was indeed thinner than the iPhone at certain points

Nisus updates Writer Pro for Lion
Nisus has updated its Nisus Writer Pro and Nisus Writer Express software with full OS X 10.7 Lion-compatibility and full-screen features. Besides the Lion features, Nisus Writer Pro 2.0.1 adds a number of requested features like drawing tools, track changes, and watermarks. Nisus Writer Express 3.4 also adds a file importer that is compatible with both Intel and PowerPC Macs.
Nisus Writer has been around for the Mac since 1989 and was the first word processor to handle multiple type systems in its file format. Since then the program has begun to show its age. New Thunderbolt chips, dubbed Cactus Ridge, coming in 2012
Thunderbolt is certainly taking its sweet time catching on, but Intel isn't about to give up yet. In 2012 the company will be rolling out Cactus Ridge, a replacement for it's current Light Ridge and Eagle Ridge solutions. There will be two versions: a quad Thunderbolt channel, dual DisplayPort model (replacing the similarly speced Light Ridge); and a dual T-bolt, single DisplayPort edition (taking over for Eagle Ridge). The plucky little white ball that first rolled its way into our hearts back at CES is back, and now it's getting ready to continue its journey onto store shelves. Sphero is a little plasticLED-lit orb that can be controlled using a number of smartphone applications. The toy's makers like to refer to it as a "real-world Wii," letting users control it either via a phone's touchscreen or with gestures, using the handset's accelerometer. Creepy and fascinating are two words that come to mind when I think about 3D4Medical's new iPad app, Mini-Monsters. The app is a photographic journey that reveals the creepy crawly side of common insects. You can get a close look at the proboscis of a mosquito, the stinger of a bee and more.
The app is a large gallery of over 500 insect images taken with a scanning electron microscope and then colorized. The detail and the colors are stunning. Each image also has information about the habitat and the behavior of the insect, a nice feature that makes Mini-Monsters both educational and enjoyable.

Viewsonic ViewPad 7e hands-on
The ViewSonic ViewPad 7e isn't exactly what we'd call a barn burner. The 1GHz Samsung chip inside is enough for some basic web browsing and light app duty, but even the ViewSonic reps we spoke to referred to it as an "e-reader on steroids," positioning it more as a competitor to the Nook Color than the iPad. In our brief hands-on, the little tablet ran Gingerbread capably enough that we weren't drumming our fingers on the table, but the 7-inch, 800 x 600 screen was not always particularly responsive -- it took three swipes to unlock the first time. Back in January Apple created an official Twitter account for its App Store. @AppStore allows users who follow it to get the latest on App Store news and deals. 745 tweets later, Apple has decided to open up another Twitter account. @iBookstore offers followers "official updates from the U.S. iBookstore from Apple, including featured books, exclusive offers, and more." Orbotix Sphero gets redesign, inductive charging
Orbotix has given a facelift to its Sphero robotic ball that it will be launching later this year. The device, which can be controlled either by an iPhone or an Android smartphone, will now be shipped in semi-opaque white, rather than the translucent look it sported when first was rolled out at CES this past January. Orbotix has also changed the charging system to be inductive, or wire-free.

Reading Rainbow to be rebooted for iPad
Reading Rainbow, a TV show geared toward encouraging children to read books, aired for over 20 years on PBS before the network's financial troubles forced the show to shut down in 2006. Reading Rainbow is coming back, but in a very next-gen fashion; rather than a TV show, Reading Rainbow will now be an iPad app.
According to Fast Company, former Reading Rainbow host LeVar Burton has launched a for-profit venture, RRKidz, that will produce a multimedia twist on Reading Rainbow's old TV format. We're back in Japan for this year's Tokyo Game Show, and obviously we'll be getting intimate with the closer-to-final PlayStation Vita along with, hopefully, some of its just announced launch titles. GeekTool was released as a free download on the Mac App Store a few weeks ago, and it's remained at the top of the download chart since. It's been around for years, and we've featured it a couple of times on TUAW, but the MAS release allows it to reach a new audience.

McAfee and Intel partner up to put anti-theft tech in Ultrabooks
Intel has long provided hardware-level anti-theft technology, primarily for its enterprise customers. Apple today issued updates for the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) on Thunderbolt-equipped models of the MacBook Pro and Mac mini that is said to resolve issues with Apple's Thunderbolt Display compatibility and Target Disk Mode under Thunderbolt. Analysts: PlayBook in 'same graveyard' as HP at 490K shipped
Analysts were pessimistic about RIM on Wednesday as few expected strong results for the BlackBerry PlayBook. A new consensus of several major analysts had RIM shipping an average of 490,000 of the tablets in the summer quarter it will report tomorrow. The Bloomberg overview would have RIM's shipments lower than the spring and would have it down to an average estimate of 2.2 million PlayBooks the entire year.
