'Logic Pro X' in development, nearing completion?
Apple is finishing up work on a "Logic Pro X," claims an anonymous source said to have taken part in a customer interview. The software will supposedly integrate tools like WaveBurner, while spinning off MainStage into a separate program. Apple is thought to be killing off Soundtrack Pro, which has already been dropped from the company's present-generation Final Cut lineup.

German market research firm research2guidance has found out that the average app on Nokia's Ovi Store was downloaded more than twice as frequently, at 160 percent, of a similar one on Apple's more popular App Store during the second quarter of 2011. In a study, the firm concluded that the average app has a better chance to generate downloads on less popular platforms. The numbers are based on daily downloads.

Lawsuit: Google gives special access to some Android OEMs
More documents just publicized in the Oracle lawsuit against Google could have far-reaching implications for Google's buyout of Motorola. Although largely confirming existing beliefs, it shows that Google's official strategy is to "give early access" to Android code to those who use the stock OS. Motorola's original Droid and Verizon were singled out by name.

Magma ExpressBox 3T gives you 3 external PCIe slots over Thunderbolt
Laptops aren't exactly renowned for their expandability, especially those beautiful slivers of aluminum from Apple. (Simply upgrading the RAM on your Air requires you break out the soldering iron.) Magma has a solution, the ExpressBox 3T. This silver case houses its own 220w power supply and a trio of PCIe 2.0 slots. Two of those slots are of the x8 variety (though one can hold an x16 card) while the third is scaled back to x4. And they all talk to your notebook via that wonderful little port known as Thunderbolt. It even comes with a carrying case which, we suppose, makes this hunk of

He dropped his target for 2011 sales from 2.2 million down to 1.5 million based on checks with retailers. They were still facing "soft" sales, and price drops like Best Buy's Labor Day weekend sale were a plan to "move inventory," he said.

Reasons why USB thumb drives are the wrong choice
So yesterday, the TUAW backchannel got into a heated discussion about USB thumb drives. We had just posted about why Lion Version support was not available on non-HFS+ file systems. Our debate wasn't over whether they were good or not, but rather why they were a poor choice for day-to-day work.
All of us had a number of drives around, but for the most part they are used for storing system installers, not for old-fashioned sneakernet-style file transfers. Nearly all of TUAW has moved on to some kind of cloud solution, be it Dropbox or Pogoplug or

Atari Arcade is the $60 answer to iCade (review)
Yearning to relive the classics (Lunar Lander, anyone?) on your iPad, replete with that authentic arcade feel? It wasn't long ago that we reviewed ThinkGeek and Ion's formidable iCade, but at $100, it was -- and still is -- a pricey portion to stomach for an occasional retro gaming fix. Fast forward to the present, and Atari's paired with Discovery Bay Games to create their own official spin on an iPad arcade adapter, fittingly dubbed the Arcade Duo-Powered Joystick. Unlike the iCade, it doesn't use Bluetooth and requires no batteries -- you simply dock your iPad into its 30-pin connector. The joypad is specifically made to work with Atar

New source repeats claims of 3G-ready fifth-gen iPod touch
Apple may be ready to launch a 3G-equipped iPod touch as soon as this month, a source claims. The company has allegedly worked out contract-free plans with its carrier partners that are similar to those for the iPad. A speculated reason for the push is iCloud, since Apple might want to ensure the device keeps up with other iOS hardware. Because the current Touch is restricted to Wi-Fi, it can only sync with iCloud in a limited number of places, meaning that a person might as well sync with their Mac or Windows PC in many instances.

Teamsters president takes Apple to task for outsourcing jobs

Netflix debunks talk of limiting simlutaneous movie streams
Netflix hoped to contain a potentially damaging situation Wednesday with a response to a claim that it was limiting Internet video streams. After it accidentally sent out a policy that would have limited the number of streams depending on the plan, the company in a statement quickly said this cap didn't exist. Apple not happy with food company's logo
Apple is accusing a Chinese food company of trademark infringement over its fruit-themed logo. The Sichuan Fangguo Food Co., Ltd. uses a round red logo with a stem and leaf. Apple claims this logo borrows conceptual elements, specifically the leaf, from its logo.
Fangguo's CEO Zhao Yi disagrees. Zhao does admit the logo is supposed to represent an Apple (it is a food services company that makes noodles and flour), but his logo has a distinct stem, Chinese characters and is a different shape than Apple's logo. Zhao also notes that the logo was originally designed in the 1980s and transferred to Zhao in 1997.

An astute check by PocketNow noticed that that it was captured at an f2.4 aperture, which would be impossible with the minimum f2.8 on the iPhone 4.

Adobe to support iOS 5 Newsstand
Adobe has confirmed that it will support iOS 5's Newsstand publishing "soon after" the iOS update is released this fall. The company's Digital Publishing Suite works with Creative Suite 5.5 to create publications for the iPad, Android and RIM's PlayBook.
Users can expect files created with Adobe's tools to be recognized and downloaded by Newsstand. Plus, apps built with the Digital Publishing Suite can feature push notifications and covers as icons.
Again, there's no hard date set for release, but it sounds like Adobe wants everything ready to go soon after iOS 5 is available. Look for it then.

On this day in 2005 you could buy the first iPod nano
Has it really been six years? The iPod nano was first made available for purchase on September 7, 2005. At the time it debuted, the iPod mini was (according to Steve Jobs) the most popular MP3 player in the world. Carrying on the tradition of "1,000 songs in your pocket" the nano was an iPod with a clickwheel shrunk down into a case that was thinner than a number 2 pencil. More importantly to the future of Apple, the nano used flash memory instead of a tiny hard drive -- a move that would eventually work its way through almost all of Apple's product line (and will likely continue). Available in black and white, the nano was available in 2 GB and 4 GB models but Apple added a 1 GB version later.

Droid Bionic arrives at Verizon tomorrow, we go hands-on today (video)
It's been a very, very long time since Verizon and Motorola together announced the Droid Bionic -- the better part of a year, in fact. Since then the phone's gone into hiding, perhaps hitting the gym and training for this moment, it's final and formal unveiling. The frequently-spied device finally ships tomorrow, and we have the full details plus early impressions right here, after the break.

It had reportedly talked to primarily Korean companies, including LG and Samsung, as early as 2010 to sell off the Personal Systems Group. The aim had been to court electronics giants by giving them a complement to their wider businesses, CNET said.

HP announces an avalanche of all-in-ones, slims down its TouchSmarts (video)
At some point earlier this year, all-in-one desktops became a thing. Companies like Toshiba and Lenovo that had never before taken an interest in the space suddenly started selling 'em, beefing up a market that HP, Dell and Apple had owned for years. You could tell what HP executives were thinking. Months earlier, the outfit had announced its TouchSmart 610 -- you know, the one with the sprawling, tilting display. It's as if the company had to prove it's the real deal when it comes to all-in-ones -- or, at least, that it could come up wit

Daily iPhone App: Radballs
I can't say I'm really a fan of the name, but Radballs is a solid music puzzle app for iOS that reminds me a lot of Lumines (definitely not a bad thing). You need to match up little orbs in sets of 4 or more to make rounded-off rectangles, and then, just like in Lumines, a "beat bar" comes by to clear them off the board and earn you points.
You can grab the beat bar to "scratch" it for extra points, or use powerups as they drop to help you clear the board as well. The music is well-done (there are even some OK Go remixes in there) and ties into the gameplay very nicely, so you can listen and sort of make music as

Tape with Easy-to-Find End: Klebebandrolle verspricht nicht zu nerven
Filed under: Haushaltstechnik

Is this Nintendo's 3DS joystick add-on?
Reports from the Japanese end of the internet are claiming that Famitsu magazine has the scoop on that Nintendo 3DS analog add-on we heard about last month. A page from the magazine (above) shows a rather meaty cradle hugging the sides of the stereoscopic clamshell, reportedly adding an R2 button in addition to a starboard circle pad. The plump peripheral may have been designed specifically for Monster Hunter Tri G, an unannounced (and unconfirmed) game that was leaked in the same issue. Famitsu made no mention of the reported hardware refresh that accompanied the last analog add-on rumor -- and pr

Grad student translates iTunes Terms of Service into something more readable
Apple makes some beautiful products, doesn't it? From the second you unbox that new iDevice, to the moment when you plug it in to your perfectly engineered MacBook and open up iTunes with the great OS X operating system -- and then you see the iTunes Legal Agreement pop up, ugly as sin and a lot less interesting. Grad student Gregg Bernstein has put a little work into doing something that Apple hasn't yet done: Make that clickthrough terms of service window a little more appealing and a little less like legal boilerplate. For his master's thesis he went through Apple's license agreement (all 4,137 words of it) and designed something that looked a lot more clean and beautiful, and actually meant some

Canaccord Genuity's Michael Walkley has raised the firm's price target for Apple stock from $515 to $545, citing "solid demand trends" for the iPad and iPhone. Checks are said to show that high June-quarter iPhone sales persisted into the month of August, leaving the iPhone 4 as the bestselling smartphone at both AT&T and Verizon, despite growing competition from Android and public expectations that a new iPhone will launch shortly. "While our August checks indicated improving battery performance for 4G/LTE/HSPA+ Android smartphones at several carriers, these devic

Facebook's iPhone app has been updated to version 3.5, and it's a pretty big update. Still missing in action is the long-awaited iPad version.
