Vizio rolls out Tablet software update, promises performance boosts aplenty
No, it's still not Honeycomb, but Vizio has just rolled out an update for its 8-inch Tablet that promises quite a few improvements, including better graphics performance, faster UI navigation, and better battery life. AT&T fires back against Sprint over T-Mobile acquisition suit
Well, that didn't take long. Sprint today revealed that it has filed a suit against AT&T's proposed T-Mobile purchase -- and now AT&T is hitting back with some less than flattering words. An AT&T spokesperson told Engadget, "this simply demonstrates what we've said all along -- Sprint is more interested in protecting itself than it is in promoting competition that benefits consumers." AT&T went on to promise a "vigorous fight" and reiterated that such a merger would ultimately prove beneficial to the industry and consumers, improving wireless service and solving spectrum concerns.

Study finds post-Steve Jobs consumer optimism
The general consensus before Steve Jobs resigned from Apple was that, when he did so, people would expect Apple to go downhill from there. However, an analysis by ConsumerAffairs finds that people's view of Apple and its future actually became more positive after Jobs resigned.

This week's podcast was recorded on a holiday, squeezed between IFA last week and CEDIA this week. Of course, all those balls in the air gave us plenty to talk about, not the least of which included definitive word on the status of Media Center in Windows 8. DirecTV's new UI in testing and latest channel addition also made for interesting discussion as well as expansions internationally by Hulu and Netflix. IFA dumped some unexpected 3D hardware in our laps in the form of Toshiba's ZL2 and Sony's HMZ-T1 -- we'll see which one is the bigger draw this holiday season. Nuance Dragon Dictate 2.5 for Mac review
Voice recognition. Or, more specifically, speech recognition. It's one of those technological wonders that we all seem to take for granted, while simultaneously throwing laughter its way for not being nearly sophisticated enough. Maylong M-260 tablet gets torn asunder by FCC, budget internals exposed
Well, well, well, what have we here? Looks like a successor to Maylong's M-250 budget Android tablet, just made it through the FCC. We can't tell much from the filing, outside of the fact that the M-260 packs WiFi, a microSD slot, and what appears to be a front facing camera and a resistive touchscreen (judging from the included stylus). Screenshots from the user's manual also show what seems to be a lightly tweaked version of Gingerbread, instead of the 2.2 beating inside its predecessor. Similar in concept to Griffin's CinemaSeat 2, backSTAGE p2 for iPad 2 ($40) from Scosche is made to be a dedicated car mounting solution. It's composed of a simple frame and a flat back, both of which are made of interestingly textured PVC. A velvety inner lining keeps the tablet from getting scratched. DigiTimes: Apple likely to lead 2011 smartphone shipments
Who doesn't love estimates and projections? Digitimes Research projects Apple will surpass Nokia in terms of shipment volume in 2011, although total smartphone shipments overall are unsurprisingly projected to go up overall from 2010's totals.

Sony adds lenticular sheet to laptop for webcam-enhanced glasses-free 3D
It looks like those not fond of 3D glasses will soon have another means to add an extra dimension to their laptop. Sony's now showing off a simple lenticular sheet that can be placed on top of a standard laptop screen for a 3D effect. That will initially be available for Sony's VAIO S series laptops and, most interestingly, it comes complete with some head-tracking software that takes advantage of the laptop's webcam to adjust the 3D image based on your position. Last week, a CNET report kicked off the wild tale of a lost iPhone 5. This baffling story tracked the phone from a bar to an apartment in San Francisco. It even included a controversial search conducted by Apple security employees with the San Francisco police department. Sprint files suit to stop AT&T / T-Mobile merger
Looks like the US government isn't the only party looking to stand in the way of AT&T's proposed acquisition of T-Mobile. Sprint today announced that it has filed suit in federal court in the District of Columbia against AT&T, Deutsche Telekom and T-Mobile. Dear Aunt TUAW,
Hi, I found (the hard way) what seems to be a bug in Lion's new "Versions" feature. If I take an image that is on the desktop, make an edit (e.g. annotate it) and then quit Preview, it automatically saves the change.
Then if I open the file again, I can use File->Revert to Saved, and restore the original, all fine. However, when the image is on my USB memory stick, it is all good until I try to restore the original version. It says "No previous version available" and "Time Machine can't find your backup disk."
This is obviously a huge problem. If I make edits to an image on the USB stick, I need to manually undo everything before quitting to prevent them from being saved. Is this an issue on your computers as well, or is it

Sales figures to play key role in Apple v. Samsung
If Apple wants to ban sales of the Galaxy 10.1 tablet in Australia, it may have to reveal U.S. and U.K. sales figures. Bloomberg reports that Sydney Federal Court judge Annabelle Bennett stated, "[u]nless Apple puts on evidence showing the impact in the U.S. or U.K., I can't draw any positive assumptions." Indiana lawmakers considering iPads
iPads are growing in popularity among educators, doctors and now lawmakers. iPhone 5 wieder mit schwachem Akku? Was tun?
Die Akkuleistung im iPhone lässt zu wünschen übrig. Dieses Problem hat Apple beileibe nicht exklusiv, haben doch fast alle Smartphone-Besitzer etwas am jeweiligen Energiequelle bzw. ihrer Leistungsfähigkeit auszusetzen. Zwar gibt es ein paar Möglichkeiten, damit der Akku länger hält, doch am Ende bleibt nur die Hoffnung auf Besserung.
Wer ein iPhone hat, will es auch auskosten. Entsprechend wird das Smartphone mit diversen Funktionen und Programmen voll gepackt, was für den Akku einen erheblichen Arbeitsaufwand bedeutet. Auch wenn die Prozessoren sich nicht mehr ganz so stromhungrig zeigen und fieberhaft an noch leistungsstärkeren Akkus gewerkelt wird, bleibt die traurige Erkenntnis: der iPhone Akku ist zu schnell leer. Court prevents Galaxy Tab 7.7 from being shown at IFA
It's a little awkward when you have to pull promotional materials for a new product at a trade show because of litigation, but that's where Samsung found itself at this year's IFA in Berlin. FOSS Patents reported (and Bloomberg and Engadget confirmed) that Apple won an injunction against the Galaxy Tab 7.7 and Samsung was forced to pull some promo materials at their booth (which they did) and apply "NOT FOR SALE IN GERMANY" stickers to their demo units. If you're anything like me, you probably overlooked Pigs in Trees when it came out a little while ago, thinking it was more of an Angry Birds knockoff than anything else. And you'd be forgiven for thinking that -- it indeed features cute pigs fighting attacking birds, with lots of silly music and sounds. Clearly the developers were influenced by Rovio's hit, if not actually trying to rip it off.
That's unfortunate, to a certain extent, because Pigs in Trees is actually a very different game. It's a line drawing real-time strategy title, which has you guiding planes (with, yes, pigs in them) after targets that are incoming to an airfield.
