Microsoft finally opening Seattle store opposite from Apple
Microsoft is finally preparing to open its Seattle store, which has been placed directly opposite one of Apple's retail outlets. On the Microsoft Store official Facebook page, the company posted an image of the building, which is still under construction, along with a comment promising to open the University Village location sometime in the fall.

Motorola seen making iPod nano, Nike+ hybrid rival
Motorola may have new media player that would simultaneously take on both the iPod nano and exercise trackers like Garmin's Forerunner or the Nike+ SportWatch. A spotting Wednesday from a survey shows a device very similar to Apple's with a ready-made wristband. As described to Engadget, it would have GPS to track runs but also have a "smart music player" that, like a cross between Apple's Power Songs and Genius, would tailor the music to similar-sounding content ideal for a workout.

Vonage Extensions makes mobile international calling a free-of-charge affair
Hey Vonage customers, your VoIP service of choice is about to get a bit of a mobile value-add. NASA iPad app helps you discover life on Earth
Focusing on the extraterrestrial all day can probably make it pretty easy to forget about all that's going on here on Earth. NASA has shifted its focus a bit for its new iPad app, taking a look at the goings-on of the world around us. The app features videos, stories, and images explaining things like climate change and plant life from the vantage point of the organization's satellites. PayPal overcharging as much as $3,878 for OS X Lion
Some people buying OS X Lion upgrades via PayPal are being overcharged, potentially in dramatic fashion, according to people responding to AppleInsider and Apple's support forums. In one case a person complains that they were charged about $3,878 on July 28th, the sum coming from 122 individual charges worth $31.79 each. "Apple blames PayPal, PayPal blames Apple," the person says. "They both are claiming to investigate, but I am stuck broke for three days now."

Dell's Stage UI for phones, PCs gets iCloud-like syncing
Dell hoped to preempt Apple Wednesday by adding its own rough parallel to iCloud. An updated Stage UI now includes SyncUP, a Nero-developed sync service that both automatical spreads files and streams music, photos, and videos between computers and mobile devices. The service is cross-platform and can see Android and Windows devices, though it won't share copy-protected content.

PayPal reportedly overcharging some customers for OS X Lion
OS X Lion is only supposed to cost US$29.99 to install on any Macs associated with your iTunes account. Some Lion buyers who purchased it through PayPal are seeing charges way higher than thirty bucks, however. Multiple users have reported the issue on Apple's support forums, and Lion buyer John Christman emailed us earlier today saying PayPal showed nearly $4000 in fees associated with Lion.

Microsoft releases Mango SDK Beta update for developers
Windows Phone developers are getting one step closer to the fresh, fruity tang of Mango's RTM build with a newly released SDK update. The one month-in-the-making "Beta 2 Refresh" tweaks the previously issued Windows Phone SDK 7.1 and is available now for download, packing an improved profiler, the ability to lock application platform APIs, an emulator-based screen cap feature for your apps and a "peek at the Marketplace Test Kit." EA: our fastest growing platform is the iPad
There was a time when the majority of games were played on dedicated consoles like the Xbox or PlayStation but, as they say, "those times are a'changin." Speaking to IndustryGamers, EA CEO John Riccitiello said consoles are no longer the dominant force in gaming. Up and coming devices like the iPad are:
Consoles used to be 80% of the industry as recently as 2000. Consoles today are 40% of the game industry, so what do we really have? We have a new hardware platform and we're putting out software every 90 days. Our fastest growing platform is the iPad right now and that didn't exist 18 months ago.

Ultrabooks to start arriving in September, more expensive than expected
Looks like those skinny Ultrabooks Intel was trying to sell us on at Computex will all be hitting the market at roughly the same time. Despite earlier suggestions that HP would beat ASUS's planned September launch, DigiTimes reports the Palo Alto company's Air competitor may not actually ship until as late as Q1 of 2012, thanks to LCD supply issues. Netflix dominates iPad and consoles, Hulu corners PCs
Netflix and Hulu occupy almost entirely separate camps of digital streaming, Nielsen learned in a study Wednesday. Both are now available on many platforms, but Netflix is the dominant form by a wide margin on non-PC devices, including iPads, game consoles, and Internet-aware media hubs, ranging from a three-to-one ratio on Apple's tablet to seven or eight times higher. Hulu only wins out on computers but often does so by a wide margin, with 89 percent of its viewers watching on a computer versus just 42 percent of Netflix owners wanting to do the same.

ASUS confirms Eee Pad Transformer will get Android 3.2 update tomorrow
No leaks this time around, but Eee Pad Transformer users don't have to wait much longer to get their Android 3.2 fix. ASUS has now confirmed that the update will be rolling out tomorrow, July 28th. New case leak backs iPhone 5 design features
A new iPhone 5 case design may validate recent leaks, says 9to5Mac. Critically the site claims to have got its hands on an actual case from an anonymous source, rather than schematics or a mock-up. A photo shows the design matching the earlier information, including a thinner shape, rounded edges and a camera cutout distinct from that used on most iPhone 4 cases.

Second Glendale, California Apple Store to open Saturday
The second Apple store in Glendale, California will open at 10AM this Saturday -- and it's only 600 feet away from the entrance of the first Glendale store. That makes the two Glendale store the closes Apple stores in the chain, according to ifoAppleStore. Apple's first Glendale store was the second Apple retail store to open and visitors say that it's so packed it's hard to get shopping done, which is probably the reason Apple opened another store so close.

IBM Selectric Typewriter turns 50, yells at tablets to get off its lawn
Imagine all of the waiting rooms and typing classes it's seen in its half-century on earth. IBM this week is celebrating the 50th birthday of its best-selling Selectric line of office typewriters. First introduced in 1961, the line featured a rotating typeball that increased typing speed and could be changed for italics, symbols, and different fonts and languages. Kentucky grade 5-12 students get 2,200 MacBook Airs
Apple has already landed a key deal for the new MacBook Air in schools. As a result of $5 million in stimulus funding, public schools in Owensboro, Kentucky will be getting about 2,200 of the ultraportables for students between grades five and 12 as well as teachers and staff. The deal is the first for both the MacBook Air and for Lion, Apple said.

Netflix adds Mad Men in the US today, CBS content in Canada and Latin America later

Google Chrome team working on multi-touch gestures
Google has released a new developer build of Chrome that fixes some of the browser navigation gestures that were disrupted with the release of Lion. On pre-Lion systems, a three-finger swipe inside of Chrome would move the user a page forwards or backwards in their web browsing history. Under Lion however, that same three-finger swipe is a system-wide gesture that moves users between different full-screen apps.
The newest developer build of Chrome for Mac, version 14.0.835.0, fixes the gesture confusion. Now in Chrome users will use a two-finger swipe to move a page forwards or backwards in their web browsing history. Samsung to roll out Galaxy Tab 10.1 TouchWiz UX update on August 3rd in NYC, and NYC only

News: Apple sued over iPod, iPhone media playback
Apple has been sued by Texas-based Affinity Labs, which claims the iPod and iPhone violate patents related to media playback. Security: Passware Captures Mac Passwords
"The Mac OS vulnerability relates to user login passwords that are stored in the system memory even if the computer is locked or put into a sleep mode. Passware Kit Forensic v11 captures live Mac computer memory over FireWire and analyzes it, extracting these passwords. The process takes a few minutes, regardless of the password strength and use of a FileVault encryption. The vulnerability is present in all modern versions of Mac OS, including Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and the latest Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, released last week."

New Chrome developer build fixes Lion multi-touch gestures
Google is seeding a new developer channel build of Chrome for the Mac, v14.0.835.0. In the release the browser notably gains support for two-fingered gestures in Lion that respect system preferences. This means that two-fingered swipes left or right will go backwards or forwards through browsing history, while three-fingered swipes will obey Lion's normal configuration for switching between fullscreen apps.

Razer preps iPhone-friendly Electra gaming headphones
Razer dipped into over-the-ear mobile audio Wednesday with the Electra. The over-the ear headset still has leatherette pads and a thick, flexible headband but is small enough to work for commutes and other listening on foot. They also carry an in-line mic and remote that work with iPhones as well as, officially, BlackBerry, and HTC-made phones.

Senator Franken says AT&T, T-Mobile merger hurts competition
Senator Al Franken has sent a letter to federal regulators recommending that they reject the proposed merger of AT&T and T-Mobile. In the 24-page document, the Minnesota Democratic expressed concerns that the deal would competitively squeeze Sprint and other smaller players,ultimately resulting in a Verizon and AT&T duopoly. The Senator also fears the $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile by AT&T would drive up wireless prices and cost thousands of jobs.

OS X Lion Version control, the File menu, and me
I love Lion's idea of consumer-grade version control, which Apple calls Auto Save and Versions. I'm just not particularly happy with its GUI. That's because it relies on a new vocabulary of menu choices and on users understanding what's going on under the hood.
Take the save options for example. You can "save a version," "duplicate," etc. These are very good tasks to do. My question though is if these are the right tasks and the right names for the typical Lion user.
If you go out and ask a bunch of people what the "save a version" menu item means, you're going to get a lot of answers, many of which don't agree. In Lion, this menu option creates a new revision point for your doc

Android Market seen running on BlackBerry PlayBook (video)
We've already seen the Android App Player leak out, and now the BlackBerry PlayBook has taken one more (unofficial) step towards being a full-fledged, psuedo-Android tablet. While it's described as a "proof of concept," the video above from CrackBerry forum member Lawguyman shows that the tablet is at least capable of running the Android Market and downloading apps, albeit with a few PlayBook-induced obstacles -- check out the furious swiping around the 1:30 mark. Moody's downgrades Nokia, sees no recovery until late 2012
Well-known credit benchmark Moody's on Wednesday downgraded Nokia's senior debt rating by two steps in a sign of a lack of confidence. The Finnish phone maker is now rated at Baa2, just two steps above what many consider a 'junk' investment. Apple will finally open its Americana retail store this Saturday at 10AM Pacific time, the company's website reveals. The outlet is notable mainly because of its location in Glendale, California, just 600 feet from another Apple Store in the Glendale Galleria. I've been trying to figure out if there is a way to add a URL to Reading List from outside of Safari, i.g. right-clicking a link in a Twitter post and using an Automator action from the services menu, etc I don't see ANYTHING in Automator or AppleScript about Reading List. This seems very stupid to me being that the only way Reading List has a chance of getting used instead of Instapaper is to throw things into it from every possible browsing location. Have you come across anything yet?

Olympus slips out SP-810UZ with 36X zoom, pseudo-3D
Olympus brought its attention back to point-and-shoot cameras later on Wednesday through its answer to the rapidly escalating fight among ultrazoom cameras. The SP-810UZ reaches an extremely long 36X (24-864mm) optical zoom, supposedly the longest for a non-interchangeable camera, even as the body itself gets smaller. The lens still musters an f2.9-5.7 aperture range and, along with better ISO sensitivity, should still be fast enough at closer ranges for regular photography.

MacBook Air, Lion releases seen pushing high Mac sales
Updated MacBook Airs should be a major driver of Mac sales in the second half of the year, says Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes. "For the September quarter, we estimate Mac unit sales to grow 18% y/y [year-over-year], which may be conservative given anticipation for the MacBook Air," he writes in a new memo. Vodafone axes EVO 3D before it even hits shelves
Keen-eyed observers, or those who registered to be notified about the EVO 3D, may have noticed a sudden dearth of glasses-free 3D phones coming to Vodafone. Apparently, the British carrier's execs are not the patient type. After several delays, Vodafone has decided to simply ax the handset rather than wait out HTC's supply issues, and has removed it from the company's "Coming Soon" page. A new Distimo study on Wednesday showed Apple riding a wave in gaming based on a wider shift to "freemium" games. The pay-for-extras model from games like Smurf's Village now makes up 52 percent of the revenue coming from games. Affinity Labs sues Apple over iPods, iPhone
Affinity Labs has sued both Apple and car audio maker AAMP over audio technology patents. Affinity accuses the companies of violating two U.S. patents, one for a "Content Delivery System and Method" and the other for a "Method for Managing Media." Affinity contends that the iPhone violates both patents, while the iPhone and iPod touch allegedly violates the first patent only.

LG cuts phone losses in half through Android smartphones
LG showed some signs of turning around its long-struggling phone business with spring results that saw it climb back up. The company still took a $49.8 million loss on its mobile group but had cut that nearly in half from the winter. Its new emphasis on smartphones saw the section's revenue climb back up by 11.6 percent to $3 billion.

Apple, Samsung consider solar tech for future products
Both Apple and Samsung have been evaluating the possibility of solar-powered products, claims Digitimes. The companies are also, in particular, said to be considering including Taiwanese solar firms in their supply chains. Some of the firms in question say though that markets may take time to develop. As an an example, industry sources add that a Samsung solar-powered netbook has an abnormally-sized solar cell, which is used in smaller numbers than with rooftop solar systems.

Papierkorb-Staubsauger-Hybrid Cuum schlürft Staub vom Büroboden

Die Jungdesigner Jun-se Kim, Yonggu Do und Eunha Seo haben einen Papierkorb entworfen, in dessen Sockel sich ein Staubsauger verbirgt: ein Dreh am Papierkorb und schon saugt das Cuum getaufte Gerät auf 360 Grad den Boden rundum ab - jedenfalls im Nahbereich. Mit dieser eher merkwürdigen als durchschlagenden Idee gelangte Cuum immerhin die Vorauswahl der IDEA Awards 2011, einem Wettbewerb der Industrial Designers Society of America. Codec Pack macht Windows Explorer für RAW-Fotos fit

OS X Lion Bug: Safari guzzling massive amounts of RAM
After installing OS X Lion last week, one of the things I've noticed is that Safari tends to run away with enormous amounts of RAM over time. A subprocess called "Safari Web Content" will sometimes use over a gigabyte of RAM. Since my Mac maxes out at 4 GB, and since it's a rare day that I'm only using Safari and nothing else, having so much of my system's RAM gobbled up by one process was bogging everything down.
Safari Web Content is a sandboxed subprocess of Safari that runs all webpage rendering. If you've got several dozen tabs open at once, it might make sense for the subprocess to use up that much RAM; however, I was seeing huge amounts of RAM usage even with only three or four tabs open. Affinity Labs sues Apple again over iPhone, iPod
After a protracted absence, Affinity Labs came back to confront Apple again on Tuesday with a lawsuit (below) over audio technology. The new complaint, which also targets car audio maker AAMP, accuses both of violating US patents 7,634,228, for a "Content Delivery System and Method," and 7,778,595, for a "Method for Managing Media." The iPhone allegedly violates both patents where the iPod and iPod touch would violate just the first; AAMP's iSimple Gateway audio system was supposedly copying either technology.

Japanischer Professor baut Elektroauto ohne seltene Erden (Video)

Professor Nobukazu Hoshi hat an seinem Labor an der Tokyo University of Science nun ein Elektroauto entwickelt, das komplett ohne seltene Erden auskommt. Olympus E-PL3 to ship in September for $700
Olympus on Wednesday set out pricing and launch dates for some of the extra photography hardware from its PEN line remake. The middle tier of the cameras, the E-PL3 or PEN Lite, will ship for $700 when mated to either the 14-42mm zoom lens or the 17mm pancake. Fox slows down Hulu with 8-day delay on free viewers
Fox on Tuesday night set out to shelter traditional TV with a long hinted-at plan to delay TV shows on Hulu for non-subscribers. (Two) Grand Central locals worry about an Apple Store
New York's PIX11 has a report up about the new Apple Store that was just confirmed to be installed right in the middle of Grand Central Terminal. While most are excited about the idea, some are not. One Grand Central visitor complains that the place is already too crowded (it is, after all, Grand Central), while the other worries that putting an Apple Store in such a historic, classic place "will take away from it all."
Of course, that's two people out of the 500,000 who pass through the commuter hub daily. We'll presume that -- especially if Apple got the paperwork done -- most New Yorkers won't mind having

Nikon may show D3, D700 sequels August 24
Nikon is planning its customary late summer introduction for August 24, multiple sources said. Press events are due in multiple countries on August 24. Nikon Rumors lacked a full schedule but expected that the D3s and D700 sequels would show that day with Coolpix cameras a week earlier.

Bird's Eye iPad app lets you use Twitter while looking down on it
Spending more and more time on Google+ these days and looking for something to draw you back to Twitter? Then you might want to consider giving the new Bird's Eye app for iPad a whirl. As you can probably surmise, it promises to let you "see Twitter from new heights" or, more specifically, view nearby tweets from high above on a map. Those not interested in the strangers around them can also specify other locations to see what folks are talking about in any given city. Not an entirely original idea, of course, but it is fairly unique as far as iPad apps go, and it's completely free. Head on past the break for a demo video.

Accessories for iPad: Booq's Viper Slider case for iPad 2
Carrying case maker Booq have announced a new case for the iPad 2 that offers both the protection of a full case while allowing users to dock their devices. Called the Viper Slider, the polycarbonate case features a non-scratch fabric inner lining and durable leatherette outside, with openings that allow for the full functionality of the iPad. The bottom quarter of the case can be easily slid off to allow the iPad to sit in almost any docking station.

Google Shopper for iPhone gets map-based Offers
Google picked late afternoon to post a major update to Google Shopper on the iPhone (App Store). The revamp brings it up to the Android version and can look for Google Offers based on location, complete with a map to show them and help get directions. A My Offers tab also lets users check deals they've flagged and check them based on how soon they expire as well as ones they've recently used.

Garmin confirms its acquisition of Navigon is complete
Mergers and acquisitions can sometimes take some unexpected turns, but that's not the case with Garmin's purchase of former rival Navigon. The company said last month that the acquisition would be complete by "late July" and now, on July 26th, it's announced that the deal is in fact done. There's still no financial details being disclosed, but execs from both companies are expectedly tossing around words like "excited" and "pleased," and they're promising plenty of integration and new opportunities going forward. Obviously, they're betting they'll be better as partners than rivals in

Media-Saturn beendet 2. Quartal mit Verlusten
Die Media-Saturn-Holding mit ihren beiden großen Ketten Media Markt und Saturn hat im zweiten Quartal nach vorläufigen Berechnungen einen Verlust in Höhe von 44 Millionen Euro erwirtschaftet. 2010 konnte für den gleichen Zeitraum noch ein Überschuss von 41 Millionen Euro ausgewiesen werden.
