Boxhead for iPad exclusive preview video
We're on the floor at Macworld Expo this week, and I had a chance to talk with Dave Swartz of Medl Mobile. Dave shared an exclusive look at an upcoming version of his popular zombie-smashing game, Boxhead. We recently gave away some copies of the gory fun, and you can check out a free Flash version here.

Average iPhone owner spends 84 minutes a day using the 108 apps on their handset
A survey of the 1,000 iOS devices that synchronize with Appsfire's mobile app discovery and sharing platform reveal some interesting statistics about app usage by its iOS owners. Summarized in an infographic, the compiled statistics show that most of its iOS users prefer native apps to web apps.
The average user spends 84 minutes a day using on-device applications and a mere ten minutes on the web using web-based applications. Each iOS owner has, on average, 108 applications installed on their device. Of these applications, 20 are shipped with the operating system and 88 are installed from the App Store.

UN: worldwide internet users hit two billion, cellphone subscriptions top five billion
The UN's International Telecommunication Union predicted last fall that the number of internet users worldwide would hit two billion by the end of 2010, and it's now issued its full report that confirms just that -- 2.08 billion, to be specific. As the ITU's Hamadoun Toure notes, that number represents a huge leap from the mere 250 million internet users that existed a decade ago, and it means that roughly one third of the world's population now has internet access of some sort -- of those, 555 million have a fixed broadband subscription, and 950 million have mobile broadband. FCC hopes to toss MetroPCS, Verizon net neutrality appeals
The FCC on Friday filed motions to dismiss attempts by MetroPCS and Verizon to overturn net neutrality rules. An agency official told Reuters the two had been caught on a technicality as both had appealed the net neutrality order too early. The rules for when to challenge were "clear" and had to take place in the first 60 days after the order appeared in the Federal Register, the government agent said.

Razer outs Black Edition DeathAdder mouse
Gaming peripherals maker Razer has just introduced the third version of its DeathAdder USB mouse with the DeathAdder Black Edition. White House backs plan to reserve 700MHz 'D Block' for public safety network
Public safety agencies in the US have been pushing for some time to have the so-called 'D Block' portion of the 700MHz wireless spectrum all to themselves, and it looks like they can now officially count on the support of the White House in that effort. Android 3.0 Honeycomb emulator has traces of smartphone support
Thought Honeycomb was just for tablets? Sure, tablets might be Google's main thrust with the release, but we've been able to dig up enough evidence in the preview SDK's emulator released yesterday to suggest that these guys are still keeping their eyes on the smartphone prize.

Leak: iPad 2's upper corner slot for a SIM, not SD cards
Claims that the next-generation iPad would get an SD card slot were partly challenged today with a countering leak. The corner opening opposite the volume rocker, which some have taken to be an SD slot, is now said to be just a relocation of the micro SIM slot from its previous position towards the middle of the tablet's edge. Capture One 6.1 upgrades lighting, pen tools
Phase One has released a new version of Capture One, its photography workflow software. The utility captures, sorts and edits photos in a manner similar to Lightroom or Aperture, but with a stronger emphasis on a professional audience. Samsung said quadrupling its processor shipments to Apple
Apple could be asking for four times as many processors from Samsung this year, reported sources claimed Friday. The iPhone designer may have stepped up its orders from 5,000 chip sheets last year to 20,000 in 2011. Multiple executives reportedly told the Korea Times that demand would be so high that Apple would be taking up half of Samsung's total 45 nanometer processor production for the year, outpacing even what Samsung needs for its smartphones and tablets.

News: Studios use iTunes to fight screener piracy
Several Hollywood studios are using iTunes as a way to combat piracy stemming from stolen screener copies of award-worthy films, according to the Los Angeles Times. Fox Searchlight was the first studio to have nearly 100,000 Screen Actors Guild voters view new films such as Black Swan through a free download from the iTunes Store, according to the report, and other studios such as Paramount and Focus Features did the same. Flip Mino HD with 802.11n WiFi hits the FCC
We'd been hearing rumors that a next-gen Flip camera with WiFi would hit sometime in the first half of the year, and what's this? A new Flip video camera with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11n WiFi just popped up in the FCC database. Based on the shape of the FCC label, the location of the HDMI port, and the M3260 model number, it definitely looks like a member of the Mino family, but that's really all we know -- although if we had to bet, the 5GHz support is there so it can beam movies to the FlipShare TV. Hon Hai to expand retail chain, open 500 Apple licensed stores in Asia
A report out of Digitimes suggests that Cybermart, a retail arm of Hon Hai which also owns Foxconn, has recently received approval as an Apple-licensed retailer in the Asia-pacific region. The retailer intends to sell Apple products in up to 500 new stores planned for China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Cybermart will open seven to eight stores in 2011, starting with its first store in Tianjin, China which will open on April 1, 2011.
These retail stores will complement the 20 stores Apple is planning to open in China during 2011. While the Apple Stores will form the hub of company's Chinese operations, Cybermart's retail chain and household name will help Apple expand its presence in the growing Asian market. The retaile

Verizon sheds some smartphone rebates, iPhone responsible?
Verizon may be partly dropping its controversial rebate practices owing to its upcoming iPhone launch. An escaped memo has shown that it should drop the need for rebates on any device costing $150 or more. Sony HX9V, HX100V long-zoom cameras slip out early
Two Sony Cyber-shot cameras have leaked out on Friday that could have Sony pushing the limits of long-zoom cameras. The HX9V could have one of the longest zooms ever in a compact camera with a 16X, f3.3-5.9 lens. It would still try to claim high image quality with Let's Go Digital seeing a 16-megapixel but back-illuminated CMOS sensor that should improve sensitivity and reduce noise.

iPad 101: Reverting to an older version of an application
It happens to us all: an application update for the iPhone or iPad goes awry, and the new app doesn't do things the way we want (or, unfortunately, work at all on one of our devices). We ourselves are in that boat at the moment, since the new version 2.0 of the TUAW iPhone app is not working as expected on the iPad -- our development team is digging into the problem right now and we hope to be fast-tracking a fixed version right away. Analyst: Apple to expand the iPhone to new carriers, boost sales in Asia
Toni Sacconaghi of Sanford Bernstein said the Apple iPhone is enjoying wide-spread acceptance in Asia that is "on par with the U.S. in some cases."
Recent figures from IDC suggest that 12% of all cell phones sold in Japan are iPhones and South Korea's KT confirmed earlier this week that it has sold two million iPhones since launching the handset in late 2009. Apple addressed this growing market during its recent earnings conference call and confirmed that sales in the Asia and Japan have doubled year over year.

New Packager part of Creative Suite 5.5 Digital Publishing?
The upcoming iPad-capable version of Packager for iPhone will be part of an update bundle for Creative Suite 5, says AppleInsider. Adobe to upgrade Packager with iPad support
Adobe is planning to release a Packager for iPhone update to support production of iPad apps, a Japanese site claims. The tool allows conversion of Flash projects into a format compatible with iOS as well as App Store rules. USC Smart Fences use spatio-temporal sensor patterns to create a DRADIS for airports
How do you send an automated alert to a security guard whenever anyone tries to climb a fence, but ignore anyone simply leaning on said chain link? How can a sensor pick up the presence of a Jeep but ignore a steady flow of gigantic airliners? iPad comes to United Arab Emirates, India
The iPad is now officially available in the United Arab Emirates, Apple has announced. As the region lacks online or retail Apple Stores, the main way of buying the tablet is through an authorized reseller. One vendor, iStyle, is selling Wi-Fi models at prices running from 2,199 AED (about $599) for 16GB through to 3,099 AED ($844) for 64GB. The cost of a 3G iPad scales from 2,799 AED ($762) on up to 3,699 AED ($1,007), imposing a high premium versus the US, where the most expensive iPad is still only $829.

Wie Google in seinem Blog meldet, wird man ab März wieder mit den Street-View-Autos unterwegs sein, um Straßen und Wege in der Panorama-Ansicht zu fotografieren. W3C drafts standard for touch-based web apps
The W3C standards group today put out a draft of a standard for using touchscreen devices on the web. Touch Events would have a page react depending on conditions unique to the mouse-free environment, such as whether or or more fingers are in contact with the screen, dragging across the screen or entering a certain part of the page. The format can also factor in the width of the contact point, such as a hand, and can work with pressure-sensitive touchscreens.

BBC iPlayer app for iPhone and iPad to be released in February

We've heard much talk of a virtual NewsStand for the iPad, but have yet to see one, until now. It seems, the French are the first to get a selection of magazines available on the iPad all from one app -- in virtual 3D, no less.
Le Kiosque, by LeKiosque.fr, is a free iPad app that sells magazines via in-app purchase. When Apple announced the Mac App Store, one of the inevitable concerns people raised was that "someday" Apple would make it the only way to install applications.
I said at the time -- and continue to believe -- that Apple won't do this for a number of reasons, but one of the biggest was that I couldn't imagine Adobe, Microsoft, AutoCAD and others would ever want to hand Apple 30 percent of their asking price.
Well, apparently Microsoft hasn't completely ruled the idea out.

New research suggests our brains delete information at an 'extraordinarily high' rate
The mysteries of the brain may be virtually endless, but a team of researchers from two institutes in Göttingen, Germany now claim to have an answer for at least one question that has remained a puzzle: just how fast does the brain forget information? According to the new model of brain activity that the researchers have devised, the answer to that is one bit per active neuron per second. iPhone 4 prompting rush on MEMS technology
The iPhone 4 has instigated a rush on microelectromechanical systems, or MEMS, says IHS analyst Jeremie Bouchaud. John Carmack: Sony NGP a 'generation beyond' smartphones
id Software co-founder John Carmack said in the wake of the Sony NGP that the new console was in an entirely different class than smartphones for gaming. The hardware would be a "generation beyond" in performance even next to phones that shipped with performance similar to the quad-core processor and graphics that aren't yet on any other device. HTC to open Apple-style Chinese retail stores
HTC has set out to boost its standing in retail with word that it's launching its own retail stores. Starting with a location in Taipei's 3C Industry Center, the company plans to open over 100 stores both in Taiwan and in mainland China to drive sales. Apple überholt Microsoft im nächsten Quartal

iPad Jacken: Alphyn Industries PADX-1 Ledge und SOMA-1

Wer bei irgendeiner Arbeit ein iPad mit sicher herumtragen muss, dass dann auch noch öfter benutzt werden will, der könnte sich bei den iPad Jacken von Alphyn Industries schon mal überlegen zuzugreifen. Die PADX-1 sieht zwar sehr militärisch aus, hat aber vorne ein kleines Klappfach in dem das iPad unterbringen kann und - ausgeklappt - auch in passender Position bedienen. Immerhin 285 Dollar sind dafür fällig. Für iPhone Freunde gibt es noch die SOMA-1 bei der das iPhone in den Arm integriert ist, und der Kopfhörer durch den Ärmel läuft. Nicht ganz so elegant wie wir finden.

TSMC schließt 2010 als Rekordjahr ab

Wie DigiTimes mit Verweis auf Industrie-Quellen berichtet, stabilisieren sich die Preise für RAM-Module und werden aufgrund der steigenden Nachfrage nach Speicherchips im mobilen Bereich bald stagnieren. Amazon mit bestem Quartalsergebnis verkauft jetzt mehr E-Books als Taschenbücher

Schon im Juli (am 19. um genau zu sein), hatten die E-Books für Kindles auf Amazon Hardcover überrundet, jetzt schlagen sie auch noch die Taschenbücher. Damit sind E-Books, was Bücher betrifft auf Amazon das beliebteste Format, jedenfalls in den USA. Das ging dann doch überraschend schnell. Mit 12,95 Milliarden verkauften Dingen insgesamt haben sie obendrein ihr bestes Quartalsergebnis erreicht. Was sich allerdings nicht im Gewinn auszeichnet, der fiel um 2 Millionen vom letzten Weihnachtsquartal. Jetzt hätten wir gerne noch eine Zahl gehört wie viele Kindles nun eigentlich verkauft

Im vergangenen Jahr konnte Apple sich erstmals einen Platz in der Liste der fünf größten Hersteller von Mobiltelefonen sichern. Neuen IDC-Daten zufolge bleibt dies auch weiterhin so. Foxconn plant 500 Apple Stores in China

iTunes 10.1.2 – Bugfixes und vorläufige Jailbreak-Safe-Meldung
Sync und Tethered Reboot funktioniert nach wie vor mit dem neuen iTunes 10.1.2, Apple nennt wenig konkrete Vorzüge von iTunes 10.1.2 – Airplay und die Synchronisation mit iOS 4.2-Geräten konnte bereits die 10.1. Die 93 MB Update laden aktuell etwas langsam.

Google testing display ads in Gmail, our patience
Oh, woe is us. Users of Gmail's web client are reporting a most unwelcome new visitor to their communication service: display ads. The right-most column that Google reserves for ads has heretofore been populated only by easy-to-ignore text links, but as of the past few of days, image-based advertising has also been sneaking out to unsuspecting emailers. The guys over at Search Engine Land have done a bit of digging and received the following statement from Google:

Class-action lawsuit filed over iPhone 4 glass strength
LA Weekly is report that a class-action lawsuit has been filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court by a person named Donald LeBuhn, claiming that Apple's marketing of the glass used in the iPhone 4 as "20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic" is deceptive and that the glass is in fact defective. LeBuhn claims that the company knows about the defect, but refuses to warn customers that "normal use" -- which in LeBuhn's case involved dropping the iPhone from a height of approximately three feet -- will cause the glass to break.

Hon Hai division to open 500 Apple resellers in China
Hon Hai, the parent company of Apple supplier Foxxconn and owner of major electronics retail chain Cybermart International has obtained certification as an Apple Reseller and plans to open up to 500 stores for Apple and other products in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, reports DigiTimes. ZTE's cheap Android drops Apple to fifth in world share
Apple has faced an unusual setback in its cellphone market share grab as IDC reported that it had been held off by ZTE. The Chinese company grew the exact same amount as its iPhone-making rival and claimed the fourth place spot in the fall with 4.2 percent share, keeping Apple at exactly four percent. The new rivalry was paralleled in the results for all of 2010, where ZTE was again the fourth largest with 3.7 percent where Apple managed 3.4 percent.

Microsoft: tablets affected Q4 earnings, netbooks past their peak
We had a strong (okay, really strong) hunch that the iPad was a contributing factor in Microsoft's waning Windows revenue in Q2, but there's nothing like a little confirmation from Redmond. MSI's Windows 7-based WindPad 100W now on sale for $710
MSI's first entry into the wild, wonderful, and oftentimes wishy-washy world of tablets is now on sale, but frankly, we aren't too sure we'd be jumping to hand over our $710 -- er, $709.95 -- for the WindPad 100W. The retailer is Simply Electronics, which just so happens to rank a few rungs below Amazon in terms of heardability-ness. To hear most mobile companies tell it these days, you'd think that NFC (or near field communications) is only for mobile payments. Microsoft: We might sell Office in the Mac App Store too

WebIS sneak-previews Pocket Informant 2 for iOS

We couldn't let the day pass without mentioning the iPad and the first anniversary of its announcement. On this day one year ago, the world sat on the edge of their seat waiting for Steve Jobs to confirm the tablet we all knew was coming. Pioneer Elite HDTVs to ride again in 2011... as rebranded Sharp LCDs
It was a dark day when Pioneer announced its mighty Kuro HDTVs would be no more, but the Pioneer Elite brand still has significant cachet and will return in 2011 on new high end TVs. The bad news? Motorola Atrix 4G goes up on AmazonWireless, $150 on February 11th -- mistake?
We suspect the boys and girls over at AmazonWireless threw their Atrix 4G product page up early, because -- among other red flags -- the buy button doesn't work, but one important detail we can glean from it is that they seem interested in selling it for $149.99 on a new contract or $599.99 off-contract. Screentime for Flash hits version 4 for Mac, Windows
Screentime Media has unveiled the latest version of their flagship product, Screentime for Flash v4 for Mac and Windows. The new version dramatically improves performance on Snow Leopard (10.6) and adds support for Flash Player 10.1, as well as adding multi-language support to the screensaver installers and support for Adobe's Flex. Screentime for Flash has re-engineered the class libraries and documentation for ActionScript v2 and v3, and the program now includes an integrated help panel for Flash CS4 and CS5 along with other improvements.

Sinbad gives the Keynote at Macworld 2011
Long time Apple devotee Sinbad delivered a very funny Keynote address this afternoon at Macworld, talking for about 20 minutes and then taking questions from the audience. He has been coming to Macworld since 1991 and talked about everything from his first Mac, which was a Macintosh 512K that he said had so little memory that putting in his password maxed it out. He joked about Steve Jobs designing the Mac for the dumbest, silliest person in the world. Steve brought some of them into a room and asked them, what can you do? They told him they could click and that's how it all started.

Hubble telescope sees furthest galaxy, 13.2 billion light years from Earth

First Look: Optoma's Neo-i iPod/iPhone dock projector
MacNN has previewed Optoma's Neo-i iPod/iPhone dock, which also doubles as a projector. Microsoft in its the call for its fiscal results acknowledged that tablets like the iPad were having an effect on the computer market. Apple has released iTunes 10.1.2 today, ripe with support for the CDMA (Verizon) iPhone. Apple's cryptic release notes are stingy with details, saying:

Samsung ships 2m Galaxy Tabs in its first three months
Samsung on Wednesday let slip that it had shipped two million Galaxy Tab devices in the roughly three months it had been on sale in October.
